As a doctor and a skin researcher, I was always busy: My days were filled with the demands of the clinic and the lab, my evenings spent digging into the latest studies. I was also living with a chronic(慢性的) illness. When I first received my diagnosis(诊断), I brushed it off. “I can handle this,” I told myself. “I've handled worse.” And for several years I, have pushed through the pain and exhaustion, convinced that slowing down in my work would mean falling behind. But the chest pain, it turned out, wasn't only a symptom of my illness — I was also pregnant. I was overjoyed when I found it out. But how could I continue to work at this pace while also nurturing(养育) a new life? I had to make a choice: Continue to push myself to my physical limits, or take a step back. In India, where I work, women doctors normally take just 6 weeks of leave, right after delivery. It's unheard of to take a year-long break, or to stop working a few months into pregnancy, as I did. One colleague remarked that taking so much leave isn't a great look for someone longing for leadership. Another told me, “Women have been working through pregnancies for generations. Why should you be any different?” In the early days of my break, I often lay awake at night, wondering whether my decision would indeed pose a threat to my career. But as time went on, I began to see my time off not as a failure, but as a necessary pause. I realised it didn't mean I was any less capable or ambitious, but that I valued my health and well-being enough. And it meant that when I returned to work, I was able to give my best — not just someone who had been running on empty. 4.What was the author's focus before pregnancy? A. To keep pace with her colleagues' progress. B. To maintain her strong and adaptive image. C. To handle patients with strange symptoms. D. To pursue the cause she had a passion for. 5.How did the author feel when she was pregnant? A. Curious yet concerned. B. Happy and determined. C. Delighted yet confused. D. Relieved and confident. 6.What is implied about the author in paragraph 4? A. She lived in a nation without labor law. B. She was thought to ask for a privilege. C. She lost a promotion during her break. D. She was shocked at others' reactions. 7.How did the author like her time off? A. A period of long-term self-doubt. B. A chance of caring for her baby. C. A strategy rather than a setback. D. A journey of rethinking her job. [答案] 4.A 5.C 6.B 7.C [解析] 4. 根据第二段中的“And for several years I pushed through the pain and exhaustion, convinced that slowing down in my work would mean falling behind.” 故选A。 5. 根据第三段中的“I was overjoyed when I found it out. When I completed a doctoral programme in mathematical biology, I wasn't sure where I saw my career going. But satisfying my curiosity for knowledge as a postdoc seemed more exciting. The problem was what to do afterward. When people asked me, “What would you like to do next?” and I had no answer to give and began to worry. My research was fun, but I doubted it could ever be useful. My peers(同辈) asked sharp questions during academic discussions. I could not get rid of the feeling that I was just pretending. It was only during my third postdoc that I experienced a change in attitude. It happened after I volunteered to co-lead a group of scientists writing a perspective piece about what future research was needed in our field. The senior researchers in the team commented that although the draft still needed some significant changes, it was suitable for submission to a high-impact journal. This statement changed my attitude. Clearly, they saw me as knowledgeable and competent. Maybe I needed to value my own professional skills a little more highly? I decided to do my best to improve the article — spending more than a year reading dozens of papers, leading group discussions, and editing the article. The process was long and dull. But the more time I devoted to it, the more knowledge I gained, and the more confident I grew. Ultimately, I landed a tenure-track position. When students ask me for advice, I usually tell them that one does not need to have a clear life plan to belong in science. Many know from the start that they want to be researchers. But for others the path to being a scientist unfolds gradually, with uncertainties along the way. As researchers, part of our mission involves finding our way without always knowing where we are going. By the way, always keep in mind that it is self-trust that counts. 1.What made the author feel anxious? A. Laughter from her peers. B. Uselessness of her major. C. Uncertainty of her future. D. Distance from her dreams. 2.Why did the author shift her attitude? A. She acquired respect from others. B. Teammates gave practical advice. C. She finished the essay quickly. D. Teammates praised her draft. 3.What does the author suggest students do? A. Have an obvious life direction. B. Seek for careers like explorers. C. Neglect worldly labels bravely. D. Stick to original choices firmly. 4.What is the suitable title for the text? A. How I Found My Confidence as a Scientist B. How I Regained My Curiosity about Research C. How I Sensed the Meaning of Persistence D. How I Achieved in Mathematical Biology 【语篇解读】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者作为科学家在职业生涯中如何找到自信的经历。 [答案] 1.C 2.D 3.B 4.A [解析] 1.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“When people asked me, ‘What would you like to do next’ and I had no answer to give and began to worry.”可知,让作者感到焦虑的是她对未来的不确定性。故选C。 2.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The senior researchers in the team commented that although the draft still needed some significant changes, it was suitable for submission to a high-impact journal. Throughout the year, I noticed that Juan had an unusual ability to solve equations(等式), and to correlate abstract relationships between concepts. I was shocked when he approached me after school one day to tell me that he liked chemistry, but failed to think that he was intelligent enough to attend college. He asked me what he should do with his life. I praised Juan's talent and encouraged him not to waste it. His eyes lit up as I explained how scholarships, loans, and grants could make college possible, then invited him to join my advanced placement chemistry class next year. After promising to reconsider his future, Juan surprised me the next morning during my jog by appearing on my lawn, declaring cheerfully, “I've decided to take your AP class.” Juan was my best student that year in advanced placement chemistry. His skills and abilities continued to grow, and he never tired of mind-bending calculations or homework. He literally blossomed before my eyes. As the end of the year approached, Juan thanked me for my interest in his life. I was profoundly moved when he told me that those fifteen or twenty minutes that we had talked the previous year had changed his life. He got an A on the advanced placement chemistry exam and he was awarded enough scholarship assistance that he was able to attend the local university. My experiences with Juan contributed to my decision to remain in the classroom. My love for my students and for the subject I teach has continued to grow over the years. I consider myself most fortunate to be a chemistry teacher, and to have been a part of so many young lives, hopes, and dreams! 5.What was Juan's initial attitude towards his own academic abilities? A. He was confident about college. B. He excelled in chemistry. C. He doubted university chances. D. Staying on the sidelines meant I was in control and would never injure myself or look like a fool. My husband's career has led to our family moving a number of times. With each move, in order to make friends, I explored new hobbies and joined various clubs and groups. All these activities were safe, slow-paced and comfortable, without a ball or a sneaker in sight. However, that changed when our family moved to Ankara. It turned out that the activity of choice in my new community was tennis. If I wanted a social life, I would have to play it, and it was a sport I had never tried before. Then I signed up for a tennis class. I still remember the first time I really challenged myself to learn something new. With arms, legs, hands and feet all going in different directions, I celebrated at the end of each tennis lesson when I hadn't thrown out my back or hurt my leg. Despite my new can-do attitude, my swings(挥动) were often met with nothing but air. Laughing and learning, I kept swinging. I kept trying. I chose to shake off the embarrassment I felt at my unpractised movements and focused instead on the progress I was making. Several weeks later, I took part in the activities our community held — Cardio Tennis on Saturdays and it was well-attended by the tennis-loving members of our community. At first, I apprehensively threw myself into playing tennis. However, the hours we spent together were full of laughter and encouragement. Then I put myself out there, unashamedly showing my beginner status. I used to hide in the cheering crowd as a way to avoid showing my weaknesses, imperfections, and lack of experience. But by putting myself in the game, I had a feeling of self-empowerment and achievement, learnt a new skill, and, best of all, made new friends who are always willing to meet up to hit the ball with me. 5.What made the author decide to try tennis in Ankara? A. She wanted to improve her physical health. B. She had watched tennis before and enjoyed it. C. Her husband encouraged her to learn a new sport. D. Her new community had tennis as its main social activity. 6.Which can best describe the author during her early tennis lessons? A. Uneasy but determined. B. Bored and hopeless. C. Skillful and promising. D. Awkward but independent. 7.What does the underlined word “apprehensively” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Actively. B. Nervously. C. Proudly. D. But after riding his bike, whether around the park or to school, he felt obviously calmer.“We call it moving meditation(冥想),”says Shea, who is a family biking advocate and author in Maryland. “We saw how incredibly helpful biking was for his focus, emotional regulation and ability to follow directions.” This experience isn't unique. Research consistently shows that physical activity contributes to improving mental health. “Exercise, no matter your age, is the single best thing you can do for every organ in your body, including your brain,” says Allan Reiss, a professor and director of the Division of Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. And while any exercise helps, a growing body of research shows biking is among the activities that might provide even more of a mental health boost. Scientists aren't yet sure why, but it might have something to do with all the functional skills cyclists use. “You need to maintain your balance and process a lot of information from your environment, like deciding whether you can squeeze past a tree or how hard you need to brake,” says Reiss. “Most importantly, you've gotten to coordinate(协调), sense, process, integrate, regulate, and continually make decisions.” According to Reiss, “Research suggests that physical activity like cycling likely encourages new cell growth in areas of the brain linked to memory and problem-solving, and can support stronger connections between neurons(神经元), ultimately impacting memory and learning.” Luckily, it's not too hard to get on a bike for most people. You should focus on the fun. To ensure riders don't get tired too quickly(or too bored), build in a fun stop rather than make the ride the single focus. Self-paced exploration and adventure are key to the ride. The benefits of cycling can multiply when it becomes a social project. In neighbourhoods where bike lanes or other safe-to-ride pathways exist, organising a group ride with friends might be just the ticket to less stressed, more relaxed individuals. 1.What does the author want to stress using Shea's son's example? A. Advantages of regular physical exercise. B. Positive effects of riding on mental health. C. Importance of leading a relaxing lifestyle. D. Possibilities that any disease can be cured. 2.Why does cycling boost mental health more according to Reiss? A. It needs better integrated coordination abilities. B. Its outdoor exposure helps improve the mood state. C. It needs repetitive movement to help calm the mind. D. Its sense of freedom and exploration helps the mind grow. 3.What is the function of the quoted statement in paragraph 4? A. Presenting experiments. B. Explaining concepts. C. Providing evidence. D. Offering suggestions. 4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Cycling with partners is recommended. B. Nonstop cycling makes the most of the ride. C. Purchasing tickets for a group ride is essential. D. Bike lane construction is promoted by communities. 【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。越来越多的研究表明,骑自行车可能是更能促进心理健康的活动之一。文章分析了其原因,并给出了让骑自行车变得更有趣的建议。 [答案] 1.B 2.A 3.C 4.A [解析] 1.推理判断题。根据第一段第一句可知,Shea的儿子在家和学校都很难集中注意力,也很难听从指示,接着But表转折,强调在骑完自行车后,Shea的儿子明显感到平静多了。再结合第一段最后一句“We saw how incredibly helpful biking was for his focus, emotional regulation and ability to follow directions.” 故选A。 3.推理判断题。 第四段的引语说道,研究表明,像骑自行车这样的体育活动可能会促进大脑中与记忆和解决问题有关的区域的新细胞生长,并能支持神经元之间更强的联系,最终影响记忆和学习。第三段中的“a growing body of research shows biking is among the activities that might provide even more of a mental health boost”提到越来越多的研究表明,骑自行车可能是更能促进心理健康的活动之一。由此可知,第四段引语从科学研究的角度分析了骑自行车为什么会促进心理健康,为上文的研究结果提供证据。故选C。 4.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“The benefits of cycling can multiply when it becomes a social project … more relaxed individuals.”表明当骑自行车成为一项社会项目时,它的好处会成倍增加,在有自行车道或其他安全骑行路径的社区里,组织一次和朋友一起的集体骑行可能正是所需要的,可以让人感到更放松。由此可知,作者建议与小伙伴一起骑自行车。故选A。 B (2026·四川眉山·期末) When thinking about Tai Chi, many see it as more of an ornamental(观赏性) sport than an activity that can truly enhance physical strength. However, a recent study has shown Tai Chi's remarkable benefits. It's better than more energetic aerobic(有氧的) exercises for lowering blood pressure in people with prehypertension(高血压前期), according to a study published in the journal JAMA Network Open in February. Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, carries significant health risks. Prehypertension, on the other hand, indicates blood pressure levels higher than normal but not yet at the hypertension threshold(起始点). For people dealing with prehypertension, Tai Chi may be a better alternative to medication. In the study, guided by scholars from the Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences' Guang'anmen Hospital in Beijing, 342 participants with prehypertension were randomly divided into 2 groups with the same number, assigned to engage in either Tai Chi or aerobic exercise for one hour, four times per week. Half of them followed the standardised 24-movement practise routine of Yang-style Tai Chi, while the remaining half pursued aerobic activities like stair climbing, jogging, and cycling. A year later, those in the Tai Chi group showed a significantly greater drop in blood pressure than those who did aerobic exercises. Moreover, nearly 22 percent of people in the Tai Chi group saw their readings fall within the normal range, compared with less than 16 percent of those in the aerobic exercise group. Tai Chi has long been a popular activity among the elderly because it brings calming effects and can be practised almost anywhere — in parks, at home, or in even smaller spaces. Medical experts have also recommended the exercise for people recovering from cardiovascular(心血管的) or respiratory(呼吸的) illnesses. Baduanjin, another popular Chinese traditional exercise, is also beneficial for controlling one's blood pressure, according to a 2022 study. Both are low-impact, relaxing the body and mind. Compared with Tai Chi, Baduanjin is less demanding on the core and leg muscles and can help people become more flexible. 5.What does the recent study reveal about Tai Chi? A. It can make prehypertension less severe. B. It's less effective than aerobic exercises. C. It can help relieve tension and stress. D. It can efficiently cure hypertension. 6.How many participants were appointed to do aerobic exercises in the study? A. 22. B. 24. C. 171. D. 342. 7.What makes Tai Chi well-liked by the elderly? A. Relaxing effect and convenience of practice. B. Cultural heritage and significance. C. Intense training and muscle building. D. Rapid results and reading improvement. 8.What do Baduanjin and Tai Chi share in common according to the passage? A. They require wonderful flexibility. B. They build core and leg muscles. C. They have similar health benefits. D. They need limited practice spaces. 【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了太极拳对高血压前期患者的益处,并提及了另一项中国传统运动八段锦也有类似的健康功效。 [答案] 5.A 6.C 7.A 8.C [解析] 5.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“For people dealing with prehypertension, Tai Chi may be a better alternative to medication.”以及第三段中的“A year later, those in the Tai Chi group showed a significantly greater drop in blood pressure than those who did aerobic exercises.”可知,太极拳对高血压前期患者有显著益处,能够降低他们的血压,使病情不那么严重。故选A。 6.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“In the study, guided by scholars from the Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences' Guang'anmen Hospital in Beijing, 342 participants with prehypertension were randomly divided into 2 groups with the same number, assigned to engage in either Tai Chi or aerobic exercise for one hour, four times per week.”可知,共有342名参与者,其中一半,即171人被分配到有氧运动组。故选C。 7.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Tai Chi has long been a popular activity among the elderly because it brings calming effects and can be practised almost anywhere — in parks, at home, or in even smaller spaces.”可知,太极拳因其放松效果和练习的便利性而受到老年人的喜爱。故选A。 8.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“A year later, those in the Tai Chi group showed a significantly greater drop in blood pressure than those who did aerobic exercises.”以及最后一段中的“Baduanjin, another popular Chinese traditional exercise, is also beneficial for controlling one's blood pressure, according to a 2022 study.
