Xu Beihong was a pioneer of 20th century Chinese art, well known for his traditional ink-and-wash paintings of horses and birds. He was one of the first Chinese artists to explore the techniques (技巧) of oil paintings.
Born in 1895 in Yixing, Jiangsu, Xu Beihong showed a strong interest in arts since childhood. He began studying the Chinese Classics from his father when he was six. Xu spent much time helping out on his family’s farm. He would paint what he noticed in nature. In 1912, his father fell ill. Xu became the breadwinner of the family and began teaching arts in all kinds of schools. In 1917, he began to teach at Peking University at the invitation of Cai Yuanpei.

Such knowledge is clear in his works. But his excellent ink brushwork truly brought his horses to life. Through his art, Xu gave the world a new way of understanding horses, celebrating their beauty, strength and spirit.

After returning home in 1927, Xu took an active part in art education. He focused on developing creativity with students. He also encouraged his students to learn from foreign artworks. “There is no other way to learn art, but to keep practising,” Xu once said.
In 1933, Xu organized an exhibition of modern Chinese painting in Paris. It drew in lots of attention and was then moved to Belgium, Milan, Moscow, and other places. Is our life better than before?
Twenty years ago, life was very different from today. People lived in small houses and walked or rode bikes to work. Children played outside with friends after school. Families usually ate dinner together.
Today, life is faster and busier. Many families have moved to bigger flats or houses. People drive cars or take buses, but some still ride bikes—especially on their way to work. Children now spend more time on phones and computers, and many of them don’t know their neighbours very well.
Is modern life better? The answer is not simple. Some changes have made our lives more comfortable. We have better medical care, longer holidays, and more ways to learn. But other changes have made us feel more stressed and more alone.
In fact, every change has two sides. The same new road that helps us reach the city faster also cuts through farmland. The phone lets us talk to friends far away, but it also stops us from talking to people nearby. So the question is not whether life is “better”, but how we use each change.
16.What was children’s life like twenty years ago?
A.They had no friends.
B.They played outside with friends after school.
C.They played on phones.

B.Modern life is better than before in every way.
C.Every change has two sides; how we use it matters.
D.Twenty years ago, life was perfect.

Have you ever wondered how blind people read? Thanks to a system invented by Louis Braille, blind people can learn to use their fingers to read.
In 1809, Braille was born in a small town in France. 31 Later, his other eye was infected, resulting in complete blindness. His blindness inspired him to become an inventor who made contributions to all blind people.
When Braille was ten years old, his parents sent him to a special school for blind students. Braille learned how to read at this school. He was first taught to read by feeling raised letters on paper. 32 Too many letters felt the same, for they had similar shapes.
Then, in 1821, Braille heard about a night-reading code system. It was a 12-dot (12凸点) system that was created for night-time communication between soldiers. However, this system didn’t allow the fingertip to cover a whole letter. The readers had to move their fingers to feel the letters. 33
Three years later, Braille developed a shorter and simpler touch system based on the night-reading code system. He used six raised dots with different combinations (组合) to stand for each letter. 34 Blind people could read much faster and more easily.
Braille died in 1852, but his touch system lives on. 35
A.It allowed a blind person to feel a whole letter without moving his or her finger.
B.Now people call this touch system Braille in honor of Louis Braille.
C.Braille thought that the night-reading code system could be improved for blind people.
D.However, this was slow and difficult.
E.Braille thought that the 12-dot system was a perfect choice for the blind.
F.When he was three, he accidentally hurt one of his eyes when he was playing.

With“和⋯⋯一起”、In“在⋯⋯里面”、Over“在⋯⋯上面”均无此搭配。
根据后文“they used abacuses (算盘) and rulers to solve problems”可知,算盘和尺子是计算工具,说明当时缺乏现代化的计算设备,computers“电脑”符合语境。
根据后文“he was awarded (授予) the Medal of the Republic”可知,他获得了国家最高荣誉,说明他一生取得了卓越的成就,achievements“成就”符合语境。
根据“the highest science and technology award”可知,此处表示获得奖项,receive an award“获得奖项”,received“收到、获得”符合语境。
