However, Justin, who is running for political office, ignores Gabby’s concerns. Desperate to hear from her mother, Gabby takes matters into her own hands.
The Scrap Iron Flotilla
Mike Carlton
When World War Ⅱ broke out, the Australian government sent five ageing WWI navy destroyers to the Mediterranean. Nazi minister Joseph Goebbels teased that they were a load of “scrap iron”. The crews, a mixture of inexperienced sailors and old officers, proudly named their fleet the “Scrapiron Flotilla” while displaying great bravery and determination under fire.
I Want To Die But I Want To Eat Tteokbokki
Baek Se-Hee
Tteokbokki is simply a Korean comfort food. Baek, a successful social media director, suffers from light depression. This part memoir, part self-help book is a record of the therapy she received in an attempt to find the fundamental causes of her low feelings so she can move in a healthier direction — and reassure others who have similar anxieties that they are not alone.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Ariti returns to his home town. The detective’s hopes for a quiet life are quickly interrupted by the murder of a property developer and the disappearance of a female police officer. As Ariti struggles to make sense of the cases, his investigation is threatened by small-town secrets. Like Hickey’s first novel, Cutters End, this equally satisfying thriller has interesting twists.
1. Who is the author of The Map Of Night?
A. Rutherford. B. Gabby. C. Justin. D. Starr.
2. Which will attract readers who are eager to live a healthy life?
A. The Map Of Night B. The Scrap Iron Flotilla
C. I Want To Die But I Want To Eat Tteokbokki D. Stone Town
3. What can we learn about Stone Town?
A. It is a folk tale. B. It is about crime.
C. It’s the author’s first work. D. It is the best seller.
B
In March, the water between Canada and Greenland, called Baffin Bay, is covered with sea ice. Scientists in a helicopter fly over, searching for narwhals (独角鲸). The narwhal is one of the most mysterious whale species on Earth. Each male sports a single tusk (长牙) 6 to 10 feet long. Narwhals are the only whales with tusks. They feed on fish, squid and shrimp. By staying under the ice, they avoid killer whales and other predators.
The helicopter lands on the frozen ocean, and Dr. Jens Koblitz climbs out. He studies animal sounds at the BioAcoustics Network. And he works with Dr. Kristin Laidre, a biologist who studies mammals that live in the Arctic.
Dr. Koblitz lowers a weighted line into the icy water. Attached to the line are 16 underwater microphones strung together, about a yard apart. Each sound from a narwhal hits each microphone at a slightly different time. When Dr. Koblitz records, he captures information about how the whales dive and rise as they hunt for food.
“The windchill is minus 5 to minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit. I have to quickly get everything back inside the helicopter so my equipment isn’t destroyed by the cold and ice,” he says.
Narwhals use echolocation. The whales buzz, click, and creak. When that sound wave hits an object, like a fish, it bounces back, producing an echo. They use sonar to find holes in the ice and prey in the dark.
But as the average global temperature increases, the Arctic ice is shrinking. The narwhal will face a severe threat as the ice melts. For centuries, sea ice has blocked most ships from the Arctic Ocean. But scientists predict the ocean will be ice-free in a few decades. Then ships will roam the narwhals habitats. The noise of the ships may drown out the whales’ clicks.
Dr. Laidre says, “If we understand what sounds they use, we can better understand how human impacts.” That understanding can show humans how to help narwhals survive.
4. What is special about narwhals?
A. They are the largest whales. B. They live on sea creatures.
C. Male whales have tusks. D. They prefer living in warm waters.
5. What does Dr. Koblitz do in Baffin Bay?
A. Study mammals in the Arctic. B. Record narwhal sounds.
C. Track climate changes. D. Learn how narwhals hunt for food.
6. Which of the following best describes Dr. Koblitz’s work?
A. Challenging. B. Boring. C. Well-paid. D. Relaxing.
7. What does paragraph 6 mainly talk about?
A. The effects of global warming on narwhals. B. The current situation of narwhals.
C. Scientists’ research on the ocean. D. Human activities in the Arctic.
C
Space is dangerous. But human innovation has allowed people to explore this deadly environment for decades. Within the protection of a space station, astronauts have enough air, food and water to complete missions of a year or longer. But missions to further reaches of space are a different matter. Establishing a base on the moon or sending humans to Mars seems just on the horizon. That can only happen if innovative and safe ways are developed.
One company, Interstellar Labs, believes they have created a system that can solve the food problem. They have developed an advanced system that can grow plants anywhere, even in space. They call their artificial intelligence (AI) managed greenhouses BioPods, and they are designed to be very efficient. In fact, Interstellar Labs claims that BioPods reduce the amount of land and water needed to produce food by 99 percent. That is not an impossible claim. BioPods don’t use any soil to grow plants, and the vast majority of water is recycled.
Plants are grown inside BioPods using aeroponics, the practice of hanging plants in the air and spraying a mist of nutrient-rich water on their roots. According to Interstellar Labs, BioPod-grown plants are up to 300 times more productive than traditionally grown plants, using only a small amount of water.
The conditions inside of a BioPod are controlled by AI, which can change anything from the lighting to the temperature and humidity. This improves growing conditions no matter what the environment is, including the emptiness of space.
The BioPods can be built in almost any environment. The pod’s structure is made with a 3D printer using raw materials in liquid form. This means that a BioPod could be built right on the surface of the moon or Mars, making transporting a large structure unnecessary.
8. Which word can replace the underlined phrase “on the horizon” in paragraph 1?
A. Strange. B. Doubtful. C. Easy D. Approaching.
9. What can we learn about a BioPod?
A. It is the name of a company. B. It is a modern greenhouse.
C. It has been widely used in space. D. It’s 3D-printed with solid materials.
10. What is an advantage of BioPod-grown plants?
A. They make the most of soil. B. They don’t need any nutrients.
C. They are of higher production. D. They aren’t strict about conditions.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The application of AI in agriculture. B. Human’s efforts in space exploration.
C. The methods of improving food output. D. Growing food in space pods to feed astronauts.
D
We are familiar with the unpleasant results of poor sleep. We may feel tired, anxious and bad-tempered, and everything gets a bit harder to do. But sleeplessness also impairs (损害) parts of the brain that affect our social lives and abilities to relate to other people, according to research by neuroscientist Eti Ben Simon.
In the first study, Simon and his colleagues designed a task where participants would face each other, and walk toward each other. The participant would decide when someone got too close, and they would measure that distance. Consistently, when people were sleep-deprived (睡眠不足的), they preferred others to be farther away.
In a recent study, they asked participants to think about different individuals while their brain activity was being recorded in an fMRI scanner. Then they answered a questionnaire (about daily acts) that explored how likely they were to help others. They found that sleep-deprived people were significantly less likely to want to help others.
They also looked at a database of charitable donations and compared the week of daylight saving time—when people lose, on average, an hour of sleep—to other weeks of the year. In 15 years’ worth of data, they kept seeing that on that week, the amount people donate is reduced by about 10 percent.
Other researchers are looking at similar questions. A colleague published a study that found doctors prescribe (开处方) fewer painkillers during a night shift than a day shift, and that was accompanied by reduced sympathy for their patients.
They’ve found that sleep deprivation reduces activity in what’s known as the theory of mind network in the brain. These are areas that help us think about other people. The larger the impairment, the less they wanted to help other people.
It’s not always easy to restore good sleep. But once we prioritize it, we can really help shift symptoms, mood, anxiety and even the desire to be kind to other people.
12. What can be inferred from the first study?
A. Distance is a key factor in social communication.
B. Participants tend to keep far away from strangers.
C. People become more talkative because of sleep loss.
D. Lack of sleep makes people less interested in social interaction.
13. Which question might be included in the questionnaire?
A. How did you sleep last night?
B. Will you keep the door open for others?
C. Who will you turn to when in sleep trouble?
D. Do you find it hard to focus after sleeplessness?
14. Why does the author mention “doctors” in paragraph 5?
A. To give a warning. B. To describe a phenomenon.
C. To present an opposite idea. D. To provide more evidence.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Give a Hand to Others in Need B. Lack of Sleep Becomes Universal
C. Sleep-Deprived People Are Selfish D. A Sound Sleep Does Good to Health

“Hurry up you guys, or you’ll be late for school!” called Mom. We dashed downstairs and had a quick breakfast. I was eating my favorite — very sweet cereal, and Sara was having eggs. When I rose to have my bowl washed, Mom whispered, “You know you need to be cautious today when you’re walking Sara to school. It’s your job to assure me she gets there all right.” Then she cast me a very serious look. I thought to myself, wondering why Mom was making such a big deal out of this. I was Sara’s first day of kindergarten, but I could manage it. It wish Mom wouldn’t treat me like such a baby.
“Goodbye, Mom!” Sara yelled. She ran out the door, and I went behind her.
“Be careful!” my mom yelled.
“I will!” I said back and ran outside. Sara was skipping down the front walkway to the sidewalk.
I grabbed Sara’s hand. “Are you eager and excited for your first day of school?” I asked, trying to sound like a grown-up. Sara smiled and nodded her head yes. Meanwhile, my mom was staring at us through the window. “When will she stop treating me like a little kid?” I thought. “I’ll show you the way.” I said, I felt proud to be the elder sister. We walked past beautiful gardens and big, leafy trees. Suddenly, I heard a growl and saw a dog walking towards us. He was big and fierce looking with long sharp teeth. “GRRR!!!” the dog growled. I didn’t see its owner or anyone who could help us. My hand became sweaty and Sara stopped walking. “I’m scared, Julie,” she said. I didn’t want her to be scared. I wanted to seem brave. “Everything will be okay,” I said.
“GRRR!!!” The dog stepped closer and we could see it was the size of a small horse — with red eyes and sharp teeth.

D 9. B 10. C 11.

分析可知,“ came from all parts of China to work on the Qinghai-Xizang Railway”在句中为定语从句,先行词为people,在从句中作主语,所以用关系代词who/that,故填who/that。
分析可知,空处及之后的内容为定语,修饰名词efforts,effort to do sth.“做某事的努力”,故填to complete。
故填were constructed。
短语:protect ...from/against ...“保护……免遭……”,所以空处填介词from/against。
主语“The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau”为单数含义,所以空处填has been attracting/has attracted,故填has been attracting/has attracted。

Today’s school sports meeting brought me an unforgettable experience. Our class took part in the 4×100-metre relay race on the school playground this morning.
At first, we fell behind other classes. However, all four runners kept pushing forward. When the last teammate sped towards the finish line, our classmates shouted loudly to cheer us on. Finally, we crossed the line first and won the gold medal.
I was so excited. This success lies in our teamwork. It teaches me that we can achieve more when we pull together.

One possible version
I was trying to make my voice sound calm. Planting my feet resolutely on the ground, I said to Sara: “Don’t be afraid!” while holding her hand tight. The dog edged closer with the menacing “GRRR!”. “Run!” I exclaimed, we sprinting to the kindergarten. Just as the dog was overtaking us, we threw ourselves inside. It was really close! We exchanged a happy smile. Seeing Sara stepping into the classroom, I turned for home, wanting desperately to narrate the thrilling episode to Mom.
I told mom what had happened. There followed no response. Then I saw Mom’s tears. “I am so proud of you! You did what you had promised!” Mom said, holding me in a tight embrace, after which Mom looked into my eyes. She gave me some advice on tackling fierce dogs: “Next time you are cornered by such a dog, pretend to pick up a stone. It will be frightened away.” My mom’s words of praise and advice were deeply engraved in my heart. And I promised to be a better guardian of Sara.
