Body language is an essential part of communication and can be just as important as our spoken language. Body language can be both conscious and unconscious actions, so it is important to make sure your body is sending the same messages as your words to ensure good communication. These actions can strengthen the verbal messages you’re sending or they can lead to mistrust and confusion — signs of poor communication and misunderstanding.
Body language can make interacting with others and expressing yourself much easier, but it can also introduce new challenges. Some nonverbal signs unintentionally communicate parts of us that we don’t want others to know. For example, bad posture or fidgeting (坐立不安的) may communicate lack of confidence, something we may not intend others to know. But body language can strengthen our verbal messages and solidify what we are telling others. Making eye contact or taking notes while someone is speaking can communicate genuine (真正的) interest. Without these signs, teachers may not be able to assess a student’s understanding.
When you’re speaking sincerely, it’s natural for your body language to respond to your words through gestures or facial expressions. We also use gestures in conversations to tell stories or describe objects often using hand signals to show how big or small something is. These are largely unconscious, naturally occurring forms of body language.
It can be difficult to communicate confidence in your actions when you may not feel it internally. When you display confident body language, such as good posture or eye contact, even if you’re making a conscious effort, studies have shown that it can make you feel more confident. When speaking to others, practice controlling the impulse (冲动) to fidget and planting your feet confidently to increase self-esteem.
4. What will your body language tell if it can’t go with your speech?
A. Probable disbelief. B. A dull speech.
C. An unclear condition. D. True meaning behind words.
5. Why does the author give some examples in Paragraph 2?
A. To show body language can help us all the time.
B. To tell body language can show the true side of us.
C. To explain how challenging it is to read body language.
D. To tell teachers how to judge a student’s understanding.
6. What can we know from the last two paragraphs?
A. Hand signals are essential ways to make us understood.
B. Naturally occurring forms of body language make us confident.
C. Proper body language can help us a lot in gaining confidence.
D. When speaking to others, try your best to hide your body language.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Communicating with Body Language
B. Understanding Others by Body Language
C. Being Smart in Showing Your Body Language
D. Getting to Know Your Friends Through Body Language
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. A

推理判断题。根据文章第二段中的“Some nonverbal signs unintentionally communicate parts of us that we don’t want others to know. For example, bad posture or fidgeting (坐立不安的) may communicate lack of confidence, something we may not intend others to know. (一些非语言符号无意中传达了我们自己不想让别人知道的部分。例如,不良的姿势或坐立不安可能会传达出缺乏自信,这是我们可能不想让别人知道的。)”可以推断出,作者举例说明有些非语言性的符号能展现我们真实的一面。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“When you’re speaking sincerely, it’s natural for your body language to respond to your words through gestures or facial expressions. We also use gestures in conversations to tell stories or describe objects often using hand signals to show how big or small something is. These are largely unconscious, naturally occurring forms of body language. (当你真诚地说话时,你的肢体语言会通过手势或面部表情来回应你的话,这是很自然的。我们在谈话中也会用手势来讲故事或描述物体,通常用手势来显示物体的大小。这些大多是无意识的、自然发生的肢体语言。)”以及最后一段“It can be difficult to communicate confidence in your actions when you may not feel it internally. When you display confident body language, such as good posture or eye contact, even if you’re making a conscious effort, studies have shown that it can make you feel more confident. When speaking to others, practice controlling the impulse (冲动) to fidget and planting your feet confidently to increase self-esteem. (当你可能没有内在感觉时,很难对自己的行为表达信心。研究表明,当你表现出自信的肢体语言时,比如良好的姿势或眼神交流,即使你在有意识地努力,也会让你感到更加自信。在与他人交谈时,练习控制烦躁的冲动,自信地站稳脚跟,以增强自尊。)”可知,作者讲述的合适的肢体语言能让我们展现自信的一面可推断,合适的身体语言能在自信中帮助我们。故选C项。
【7题详解】

An important development in forensic science, the scientific methods used for finding out about a crime, has come from cooperative efforts between researchers at Shanghai Normal University in China and the University of Bath in the UK.
The teamwork has led to the creation of a water-soluble fluorescent spray (水溶性荧光喷雾) that significantly advanced the detection of possible fingerprints. Unlike traditional methods that often involve the use of poisonous or environmentally harmful chemicals, this innovative spray offers a safer and greener choice.
By targeting the invisible prints left behind by sweat or oil on surfaces, the spray quickly makes them visible within seconds, promoting convenience and speed in forensic investigations. According to researchers, its water solubility further improves its applicability, allowing for adaptable use directly at crime scenes.
Detecting latent (hidden) fingerprints (LFPs) is important in forensic science, but their invisible nature poses challenges. Traditional methods like powder dusting and chemicals have limitations in speed and safety. Using the fluorescence properties of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP), the researchers have developed two distinct dyes (染料) — LFP-Yellow and LFP-Red to address these challenges. These dyes exhibit an “off-on” fluorescence response upon different parts of LFPs, by selectively attaching to small elements present in fingerprints. Under blue light, they give out a soft fluorescent light, enabling easy detection. Developed from jellyfish (水母;海蜇), GFP serves as a biological basis for these dyes, ensuring they do not affect the following DNA analysis of the fingerprints.
According to researchers, applying these dyes involves a fine spray, which prevents damaging spots and offers a cleaner way, compared to traditional methods. It works perfectly even on rough surfaces like brick, where collecting fingerprints can be particularly arduous.
“This system can even be used on fingerprints that are a week old. Having two different colors available means the spray can be used on different colored surfaces. We’re hoping to produce more colors in the future. We’re looking for cooperation with various companies to bring the dyes to market for wide availability. Additionally, ongoing research and development efforts will be needed to continue to improve their products,” said Professor Tony James, from the University of Bath.
8. What is the advantage of the new spray over previous methods?
A. It’s more accurate and applicable. B. It’s more effective and eco-friendly.
C. It’s colorful and easy to produce. D. It’s cleaner and convenient to carry.
9. How do the two dyes make LFPs visible?
A. By helping collect and analyze the DNA of them.
B. By attaching to them and exhibiting them as fluorescent light.
C. By taking in fluorescence and reflecting blue light to them.
D. By slowing down the fluorescence response of finger elements.
10. What does the underlined word “arduous” mean in the fifth paragraph?
A. Practical. B. Fruitful. C. Debatable. D. Difficult.
11. What do Tony James’ words intend to say about the spray?
A. Its limitations on fingerprints’ existence time will be removed.
B. It will be applied to various fields in the future.
C. Its improvement can promise a brighter future.
D. It could replace DNA analysis in forensics.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. D 11. C

Cold winters can be extra annoying for people who wear eyeglasses. Whenever they come indoors, their glasses practically always fog up, just like when warm air from a car’s heater hits a cold windscreen.
When you enter a house from the extremely cold outdoors, the warm air around you cools. This causes some of the water vapor (水蒸气) in the air to turn into small drops of water. If you have glasses, nearby tiny water drops will attach to the glasses and fog them up, explains Alexander Henn, who developed a new coating made from tree waste.
Henn dealt with the problem by using a renewable waste product — lignin (木质素), a combination made from smaller building blocks. Woody plants contain lots of lignin, which keeps them hard and strong. “Here in Finland, we have a lot of trees. Everyone knows that you can build with the wood, or you can make paper or cloth from it, but most of those processes don’t use a tree’s lignin, which ends up as a waste product,” Henn says.
The researchers were working with lignin nanoparticles (纳米粒子) before starting thinking about fog. To make them, the scientists put mini-lignin pieces in a specially made liquid. When they poured that liquid into water, the lignin gathered together, forming tiny groups in the water. Each one was about 100 nanometers in size. Those tiny bits were hydrophilic, which means they love water. Coating glass with water-loving lignin bits would change how its surface interacts with water. The nanoparticles wanted to hold onto the water, which would make them spread out across the glass surface. If that water spreads out enough, the small water drops will form a continuous thin layer. Although the glasses are now wet, they might not be foggy.
There was just one problem. “You could see the particles,” Henn says. So putting lignin bits on glass would make it look a bit dirty. This encouraged Henn to make the lignin particles 50 nanometers across so they would go unnoticed. “Lignin can do many different things, including being used as an incredible renewable resource. Besides, it can take in light in interesting ways,” he adds.
12. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?
A. What troubles glasses wearers. B. How to keep your glasses clear.
C. Why glasses turn foggy in winter. D. How water vapor becomes water drops.
13. What can be inferred from Henn’s words in paragraph 3?
A. Lignin is a rare element in trees. B. Finland has created much wood waste.
C. Trees in Finland are used unreasonably. D. Lignin’s role is often ignored in Finland.
14. How did lignin help rid glasses of fog?
A. By dividing water drops into nanoparticles.
B. By forming a thin layer of water on the glass.
C. By stopping water vapor from becoming water.
D. By taking in water and keeping the glasses dry.
15. What is Henn’s solution to the disadvantage of the lignin coating?
A. Creating recyclable lignin. B. Making smaller lignin bits.
C. Applying lignin in wider areas. D. Exploring ways to clean eyeglasses.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. B

【12题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“When you enter a house from the extremely cold outdoors, the warm air around you cools. This causes some of the water vapor in the air to turn into small drops of water. If you have glasses, nearby tiny water drops will attach to the glasses and fog them up, explains Alexander Henn, who developed a new coating made from tree waste. (当你从极冷的室外进入一所房子时,你周围的热空气会变冷。这使得空气中的一些水蒸气变成了小水滴。Alexander Henn解释说,如果你有眼镜,附近的小水滴就会附着在眼镜上,使它们起雾。他开发了一种用树木废料制成的新涂层)”可知,本段主要解释了眼镜在冬天起雾的原因。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中Henn所说的话“Here in Finland, we have a lot of trees. 【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Coating glass with water-loving lignin bits would change how its surface interacts with water. The nanoparticles wanted to hold onto the water, which would make them spread out across the glass surface. If that water spreads out enough, the small water drops will form a continuous thin layer. Although the glasses are now wet, they might not be foggy. (在玻璃表面涂上亲水木质素会改变其表面与水的相互作用。纳米粒子想要抓住水,这将使它们在玻璃表面扩散。如果水足够分散,小水滴就会形成连续的薄层。虽然眼镜现在是湿的,但它们可能不会有雾)”可知,木质素通过在眼镜上形成一层薄薄的水层来帮助眼镜除去雾。故选B项。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Each one was about 100 nanometers in size. (每一个大约有100纳米大小)”和最后一段中“So putting lignin bits on glass would make it look a bit dirty. This encouraged Henn to make the lignin particles 50 nanometers across so they would go unnoticed. (所以把木质素放在眼镜上会让它看起来有点脏。这促使Henn将木质素颗粒制作成50纳米大小,这样它们就不会被注意到)”可知,对于木质素涂层的缺点,Henn的解决方案是制造更小的木质素颗粒。故选B项。

【答案】例文
Dear Johnson,
I’m terribly sorry that you felt ignored during your first trip to China. I hope you won’t take it personally when your new Chinese friends only shook hands instead of hugging you.
Actually, it is a cultural difference. In Brazil, hugging is a common warm greeting. However, most Chinese people prefer handshakes when meeting new friends. We consider handshakes polite and proper, which doesn’t mean we are unfriendly or cold. We just keep a little more physical distance for social respect.
I really hope you can understand this cultural gap and enjoy your stay here.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Having taken part in the interschool storytelling championship for the past two years, I was a shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited (自负的). I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added. “I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.” This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools. I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. ‘Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.

Finally, results were announced after the contest.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Soon it was my turn to talk. Facing the crowd, I found myself suffering from stage fright. I spoke nervously and even stuttered a few times as I forgot parts of the story. My legs trembled and so did my voice. On seeing my terrible performance, the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. I had never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end, I walked off the stage, with my eyes filled with tears.
Finally, results were announced after the contest. I felt sad, because I did not win any prizes, which was not surprising at all. I felt rather ashamed when I faced my classmates and of course, Ms. Sara. I regretted my foolish behavior. On the following day, I went to visit Ms. Sara and apologized. Ms. Sara held my hands, seriously saying, “It’s OK. But from this, you should learn that pride goes before a fall and that practice makes perfect.” I nodded my head and promised to keep this experience as a life-long reminder.
