When she was a kid, Danielle Belleny “was always outdoors, playing with plants and investigating the world on my own.” “I wanted to be a veterinarian (兽医), at first,” she says. “I always knew I wanted to work with animals, and as a kid that was the only job I knew where you could do that.”
But when Belleny reached her second year of college, her dad mentioned wildlife biology (生物学) as another choice. She hadn’t yet heard of it before, but that’s what she was learning about. While in college, Belleny started working on research projects. She spent a lot of time with animals in their natural environment. On one project, she studied the plants that animals eat. Another is about placing trackers on a bird.
Now Belleny is working at Plateau Land & Wildlife Management in Hays County, Texas. “In the morning, I’m usually out the door by sunrise,” she says. She studies birds. She keeps track of different animals. And she searches for signs of what other animals in the area are doing. “I love that there’s always a sense of discovery. It allows me to keep learning,” she says.
Around lunchtime, she’ll return home and write up a report. In the afternoon, she leaves for another site visit. Landowners can request her services. She advises people on how to help with the wildlife that lives on their land. “It’s a lot of meeting new people, a lot of quick introductions, and then talking for long periods of time.” That’s all her work for a day.
Outside of work, Belleny has been bird-watching for seven years. Her first book, This Is a Book for People Who Love Birds, was published in May. It allowed her to share her love of the activity. Now she’s working on a children’s book about bird-watching. It’s scheduled to come out next year.
Belleny has some advice for young people who are thinking about professional goals. “Try everything you’re interested in.” And if you’re interested in working with animals, “Go to a library and find some field guides.” There’s a lot of information about animals out there. Books are always a good place to start.
4. What is Danielle Belleny at present?
A. A veterinarian. B. A wildlife biologist.
C. A zoo keeper. D. A full-time writer.
5. What does Belleny mainly do after work?
A. She keeps birds in her home. B. She teaches people to watch birds.
C. She writes books about birds. D. She studies the food source of birds.
6. What does Belleny suggest young people do?
A. Find information about a library. B. Try to protect animals.
C. Focus on readings about animals. D. Do what you enjoy doing.
7. What can be the suitable title for the text?
A. Study wildlife in the field B. Protect children’s interests
C. Do researches on animal disease D. Help farmers with their work

The classic 1951 science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still includes an impressive character—a frightening robot (Gort) whose terrible actions are under control only when he is ordered, “Klaatu Barada Nikto”. What does this mean? I don’t know. But when I overhear my students speaking to each other, I am often similarly confused.
I teach at a university. One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age—18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.
Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked into my class, my students were chatting happily with each other. One of their comments caught my ear: “Venmo it to me.” I had no idea what “Venmo” meant, so I asked. The good-natured students were happy to explain it to me, and in return I nodded with an awkward expression, as if I should have known better.
I went home that evening, losing myself in that moment of noncomprehension (不理解). I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awaken from a five-year sleep, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn’t understand the language.
Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability— for the most part— to understand their explanations.
But what will happen if my interest wanes and that the language ship finally disappears over the horizon? The answer, to me, is clear: Klaatu Barada Nikto.
8. Why does the author mention the classic 1951 film?
A. To recommend an excellent film. B. To introduce a similar experience.
C. To suggest a language learning method. D. To discuss how to control a robot.
9. What makes the author fall behind in language?
A. Learning needs. B. Teaching tasks.
C. Age difference. D. Hearing loss.
10. What does the author think of language change?
A. It is entirely avoidable. B. It is really small.
C. It is very beneficial. D. It is much too rapid.
11. What does the underlined word “wanes” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Lessens. B. Grows. C. Happens. D. Focuses.
D
People will tell you the only way to really learn a language is to completely immerse (浸入) yourself in a country where that language is spoken. Not all language learners, of course, will have the chance to spend some time in an immersion environment. But if you can’t actually fly across the world to learn a new language, you can always create an immersion environment where you can talk to native speakers.
That’s where Babbel comes in. Babbel is one of the most popular language learning apps on the market for studying new languages at your own pace. The app stresses real-life conversational skills, so you won’t be stopped by grammatical knowledge and verb patterns.
And right now, you can get 15% off a lifetime subscription (订阅) to Babbel Language Learning ($150; stacksocial.com). A lifetime subscription is huge when it comes to getting the most out of the app, since you’ll be able to return to lessons time and time again and review whichever section or topic you might need.
So how does it all work? First, you’ll choose one of the 14 languages. While Babbel offers familiar languages like Spanish and Italian, it also offers less commonly studied ones like Polish, Indonesian and more. Once you pick your language, you’ll choose a wide range of real-life topics. Each course takes about 10 to 15 minutes, so you can pick one up on the way to work, during your lunch break, or really at any point you have some time to kill.
Beyond this, Babbel includes a ton of additional features (特色) designed to make sure you learn the language in a real, practical and correct way. The app uses speech recognition technology to make sure your pronunciation is correct compared with how native speakers would say certain words.
12. What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A. The amazing experiences of travelling. B. Different ways to learn a new language.
C. The importance of language learning environment. D. Chances to communicate with native speakers.
13. What can we know about Babbel?
A. It’s a tool for learning languages. B. It is designed in various types.
C. It focuses more on grammar points. D. It’s the most popular app in the market.
14. What should the users do first to learn with the app?
A. Choose the place to learn a course. B. Pick the language they want to learn.
C. Schedule the reading time. D. Choose a proper topic.
15. Why does Babbel use speech recognition technology?
A. To represent its additional features. B. To meet the needs of native speakers.
C. To compare differences between words. D. To make the pronunciation correct.

I tried to give up take-outs (外卖) earlier this year. You may wonder why I made that decision. I spent a good amount of money on take-outs every month. I almost spent 30 percent of my money in dining every month. I hoped giving up my costly habit would save me some money.
My boyfriend had tried many times to get me to plan out my meal ahead of time, but I never listened to him. When I told him my decision, he took it with a grain of salt. But later when I made it, he finally believed I could do it.
In order to prepare meals myself, I knew I would need a few recipes (菜谱) to prepare on Sundays and eat throughout the week. I depended on Pinterest for recipes. I learned to make some dishes, which are delicious to make.
Because I gave up take-outs, I not only saved some money, but also spent less time in line for lunch. It freed up a great amount of work time. But I noticed I hardly left the office on days when I brought my lunch. Actually, I wish I had still taken my lunch breaks just to get a breath of fresh air.
Research shows that spending money on experiences brings the most long-lasting happiness. By saving money on food, I was better equipped to afford my vacation and was able to create memories I will treasure. I spent a one-week vacation in May this year and it was great.
After preparing food myself, I had better control of my money and was able to deal with unexpected cost. And I learned a few new recipes in the process!

56. Do you think the author has made the right decision to give up take-outs? Why ? (no more than 20 words)

A. Lessens. B. Grows. C. Happens. D. Focuses.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. A
【解析】

【8题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第一段“The classic 1951 science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still includes an impressive character—a frightening robot (Gort) whose terrible actions are under control only when he is ordered, ‘Klaatu Barada Nikto’. What does this mean? I don’t know. But when I overhear my students speaking to each other, I am often similarly confused.(1951年的经典科幻电影《地球静止的那一天》中有一个令人印象深刻的角色——一个可怕的机器人(戈特饰),他的可怕行为只有在接到命令时才能得到控制,‘Klaatu Barada Nikto’。这是什么意思?我不知道。但当我无意中听到我的学生们互相交谈时,我也经常感到类似的困惑。)”以及下文可知,文章第一段谈及1951年的经典电影中的机器人命令语言,是为了介绍作者自己有类似的经历,即自己经常听不懂学生说的话。故选B项。

But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.(其中一个“问题”是,随着时间的流逝,我变老了,但我的学生们还是一样——18到22岁。
根据文章第四段 “I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awaken from a five-year sleep, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. (我并不反对改变,但当改变的步伐让我手忙脚乱时,我会感到不舒服。如果我从五年的沉睡中醒来,我根本不知道人们在说什么。)”可知,作者认为语言变化太快了。故选D项。
【11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段“Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability— for the most part— to understand their explanations.(他们愿意向我解释他们的话是一种极大的安慰,我祝贺自己至少对他们所说的内容感兴趣,以及我在很大程度上理解他们解释的能力。)”及该句中的 But 可知,这里指自己的兴趣不再有,所以猜测该词意思为“减退,减弱”。故选A项。
