When I first heard about Summit Learning,I admitted I was not a bit happy and excited at all.I
thought it would need interactions with others. But later,I was amazed when I got to experience it
firsthand.
Recently,we did a poetry project, and one of the activities was a peer (review.I would
never have taken part if it was up to me,as I preferred to work by myself. But when I got involved,I
found in the experience,I had done something that I thought was nearly impossible-it made my
poetry better. My partner informed me of my mistakes and told me where I could give more details.
One of our final products of the project was to present our poetry to the class.I've always loved
public speaking, but I thought with Summit Learning,I would have fewer chances to speak.I was
wrong. The peer activities we did with a partner gave me more belief in my ability and encouraged me

to do more to make my presentation the best it could possibly be.
Interactions like these are what Summit Learning is all about. This style of learning brings a
positive and hard-working culture that allows us to push our boundaries (and keep going. It
creates a sense of community since we are all working towards a similar goal.

what I can do.With Summit Learning,I can go beyond expectations in projects or move ahead in
learning new knowledge when I'm ready.I have ownership of my work and can pursue my goals.

people and myself differently. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I cannot see
myself going back to a normal classroom.

Jeffrey Hall,a teacher of Communications from the University of Kansas (KU),has used his
research to define the exact amount of time necessary to make friends with someone. He's also found
how long it will take to deepen a relationship. His new study found that it takes around 50 hours of
time together to go from being someone's acquaintance to casual friend. It takes about 90 hours to go
from being casual friends to friends, and more than 200 hours before considering someone a close
friend or best friend.
But it isn't spending just any kind of time together that deepens a friendship-hours spent working
together, for example, don't count as much as hours spent getting to know someone by hanging out,
joking around, playing video games, and doing more playful activities. The study explains that these
kinds of activities help us to form a deeper connection with someone."We have to put that time in,"
Hall said."You can't make friends without any effort."
The results of the study come from analysis of 355 responses to an online survey from adults who
said they had moved in the last six months and were looking for new friends in their new environment.
Survey participants were asked about new relationships as well as hours spent together and activities
第4页/供10页
they did. They were then asked to rate their resulting relationships according to one of four stages:
acquaintance,casual friend,friend and close friend.
The main conclusion that Hall came to is that making close friends takes serious effort. So if you
want to have some best friends, you have to know that spending time with someone is the most
important thing.
28.How long does it take to turn an acquaintance into a friend?
A.About 50 hours.B.About 90 hours.C.About 140 hours.
D.About 200 hours.
29.What does the underlined part"that time"in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Time spent working together.
B.Time spent finding new friends.
C.Time spent helping a new friend.
D.Time spent doing fun things together.
30.Which may help deepen a friendship according to the study?
A.Trying to understand your friend's feelings.B.Enjoying quality time with your friend.
C.Treating a new friend like a close one.
D.Being generous to your friend.
31.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To solve a relationship problem.
B.To introduce a teacher from KU.
C.To present the findings of a new study.
D.To discuss the importance of friendship

Students who plan to use AI(人工智能)tools to write their college admission essays should think
twice:Essays written by AI sound very similar to each other and lack personal voice, even when details
like race or gender are included.
Researchers from the Cornell University compared 30,000 college application essays written by
humans to ones written by eight AI tools. They discovered that AI essays were easy to tell from actual
human writing because they used similar sentence patterns and repeated the same kinds of ideas.
"The admission essay is a chance for applicants to offer ideas about who they are, beyond all
the structured information on the application form,"said Rene Kizilcec, senior author of the new study.
"AI tools can help students improve their writing and are likely a good idea for weak writers. But
asking for a full article will result in something that just does not sound like any real applicant."
The researchers explained that AI models cannot easily copy a person's natural writing style. This
makes them undependable for important writing tasks like college applications. When AI
tools were asked to write from the view of a specific person, such as"an Asian woman from California",
the results sounded even less human. The essays often listed personal details in a flat and predictable
way.Surprisingly, the team found that another AI program could easily tell the difference between
human and AI-written essays. This means universities and colleges could likely find out essays written
mainly by AI tools.
First author Jinsook Lee advises high school students to use their own ideas to brainstorm and
write some simple essays, and,if allowed, use AI only to polish (their essays.Applying to college
can be stressful, but Lee remembers her own article-writing positively."It was a great chance to look
back on my life and my background,"she said."I think it was the first experience for me to be really

thoughtful.”
32.What is a problem about AI-written essays?
A.They are short of a personal touch.
B.They are always off-topic.
C.They use many difficult words.
D.They hardly describe an event in detail.
33.What does the paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the study?
A.Its use.
B.Its findings.
C.Its researchers.
D.Its background.
34.What does Lee advise high school students to do?
A.Use AI tools to improve their writing.
B.Turn to AI models for help anytime.
C.Depend on AI models to write essays.
D.Avoid using AI tools for any writing.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the passage?
A.Can AI Influence Students in College Writing?
B.Should Students Use AI Tools for Coliege Essays?
C.Do Colleges Accept AI-based Application Essays?
D.Will AI Change How College Students Write Essays?

I couldn't forget the way I was frozen in front of the class today. My teacher,Mr.Liu had divided
the class into groups to do speeches.Today was my turn. However,my hands shook so badly that I
couldn't read my notes. My voice became softer even to silence.Mr.Liu kindly ended my part of
speech even though I clearly didn't finish. He also asked me to stay after class for a moment.
"Betty,I know you are shy,but you worked so hard on this project.I'd hate to see you give up on
yourself."Mr.Liu said,"If I give you another chance until tomorrow,do you think you can find
courage?"I nodded, grateful for the chance.I went as quickly as I could to my next class, keeping my
head down and hoping the school day would end soon.
