Three Ways to Make Roads Safer for Wildlife
Every year, wildlife-vehicle crashes threaten many endangered species, injure people, and cause costly car damage in the U.S. Fortunately, several practical solutions have significantly reduced such accidents.
Green Bridges
These bridges are built over highways and covered with soil, grass, and native plants. They’re especially useful for large animals such as deer and bears, which generally prefer wide, open spaces. Beyond saving individual animals, green bridges also help ensure species survival. On Washington’s I-90, a major east-west highway, animals trying to move north-south are trapped between the highway and the Columbia River. This causes a risk of “localized extinction”. The overpasses reconnect these separated populations, allowing them to find each other and maintain healthy genetic diversity.
Safe Underpasses
These undercrossings run beneath roads and are often better for smaller or shyer animals. Black bears, for example, often prefer these darker, more covered passages. Even fish can use them when streams or wetlands are connected. On I-90, underpasses connecting wetlands to the Yakima River have allowed threatened bull trout (鳟鱼) to return to tributaries (支流) they hadn’t used in years. In this way, undercrossings not only help animals cross roads safely, but also reconnect waterways and habitats that were once blocked.
Guiding Fences
Fences are another key part of wildlife-crossing systems. In Wyoming, for example, fences direct migrating antelope toward overpasses instead of allowing them to step directly onto the highway. In Banff National Park, fences work together with crossings to reduce wildlife-vehicle crashes by up to 80 percent. Without fences, animals might still try to cross dangerous roads at the wrong places.
1. What problem can the green bridges on Washington’s I-90 solve for animals?
A. Food shortage. B. Wrong direction. C. Loss of diversity. D. River separation.
2. How do underpasses help fish species at risk?
A. By keeping threats away. B. By creating darker passages.
C. By providing new habitats. D. By linking separated waterways.
3. What is the role of the fences in the wildlife-crossing system?
A. Routes to open spaces. B. Guides to safe crossings.
C. Barriers to animal migration. D. Borders to national parks.

I was one of the men who couldn’t stop talking. Aware that the world feels unbearably loud, aware that I, too, often add to that noise, I decided to learn to keep my mouth shut.
I often felt urged to point out others’ stupidity in their posts, as though I alone had noticed it. I posted commentary about Hamlet, as though my followers were desperate for my “original” takes. My social media timeline was full of such attempts to appear intelligent. So I removed all past posts and shared only writing links. At first I felt annoyed and anxious, but the feelings soon faded into embarrassment over my past actions.
Talking less in real life proved tougher. If I encountered someone I sort of knew, I’d talk quickly to fill the silence. A friend told me embracing awkward silences builds trust between conversational partners. She advised me to let silence breathe. Suffering awkward silences was terrible at first, and is still hard now, but it’s gotten a little better with practice.
Another problem of mine was conversational narcissism. When people open up about their problems, responses like “Wow, that happened to me once!” turn the conversation away from understanding. This shift response is biologically rewarding for the speaker, but uncomfortable for the listener. Now I follow the rule — when possible, say nothing and simply listen. True active listening demands full attention and comprehension — not the performative nods, mirrored questions and practiced body language. Though exhausting, I consciously practice during every conversation.
Not talking at work proved easier. After analyzing how often and how long I spoke in meetings, I found I talked and interrupted too much. Now I apply Wait, which requires posing a question to yourself before speaking: “Why am I talking?” You can talk if the answer to Wait is convincing. Wait isn’t about silence, but about questioning whether you’re actually contributing or filling space.
Now I never regret not posting. My urge to talk has decreased, the desire to interrupt has lessened, and my capacity to listen has grown. And the rest is silence.
4. Why did the author feel embarrassed about his past social media posts?
A. He tried to impress others. B. He corrected others’ errors.
C. He knew little about Hamlet. D. He overshared his private life.
5. What does the underlined phrase “conversational narcissism” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Topic avoidance. B. Self-centered talk.
C. Emotion-sharing. D. Constant interruption.
6. How did the author change his over-talking habit at work?
A. By shortening responses. B. By reducing interruptions.
C. By using the Wait method. D. By filling awkward silences.
7. What could be the suitable title of the passage?
A. The Power of Listening Well. B. The Courage to Break Silence.
C. The Wisdom of Saying Less. D. The Secret to Better Speaking.

Recently, a well-known US coffee chain’s new “Coffeehouse Code of Conduct” is making people buy something or leave, changing its previous casual attitude. Meanwhile, in Paris, traditional cafés are competing with trendy coffee shops, with locals complaining that American style takeaway coffee is ruining the French tradition of taking their time. This has raised an important question: What are coffee shops really for?
The answer has always been more than coffee. Seventeenth century coffee houses offered a meeting space for revolutions. They were also, historically, a shelter. As French writer Beauvoir wrote, “During World War II, we spent whole days in the Café de Flore through the freezing winter and always had a shock of pleasure, emerging from the cold darkness, coming into this warm, bright place. We felt at home, safe.”
That gets to the heart of what good cafés are: third places, the term coined by the sociologist Ray Oldenburg to describe spaces that are neither home nor work. These neutral spaces are also accessible and inclusive, allowing visitors to keep a low profile and providing room for conversation and playfulness. I cherish such places, at various points in my life, department stores, museums, and stations have been vital third places to me, even if not all fit the “playful” criterion.
However, many third places are disappearing due to economic difficulties. The Internet has become our third space but it can’t be everything a third place is: safety when home isn’t a shelter and a breath of air for anyone who just needs to be elsewhere.
There is an amazing third place near me, York Community Stadium Complex, where there is a pool, a sports hall and a climbing wall, plus a library, a café and a drop-in support centre for people with cancer. Mostly, though, it’s a space to hang out unbothered, used by people of all ages. It’s welcoming, accessible, and, yes, even playful.
With many shops closed in the UK, why not turn them into community centres, repair cafés, or meeting spots? It would be nice to chat about it somewhere — maybe over coffee, maybe not.
8. What phenomenon does the author point out in paragraph 1?
A. Coffee cultures are conflicting.
B. French traditions are popular throughout the world.
C. Takeaway habits hardly affect French consumption.
D. Café rules always remain the same.
9. Why does the author quote Beauvoir’s words?
A. To recall wartime memories. B. To share a writer’s experience.
C. To contrast cold with warmth. D. To show the comforting role of coffee houses.
10. Which could be a third place according to the passage?
A. A school lecture hall. B. A city square.
C. An office meeting room. D. A private working group.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards creating new third places?
A. Pessimistic. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
D
As people pay increasing attention to personal health, non-invasive home-testing devices have become one of the fastest-growing fields in modern technology. A newly-developed portable breath detector has drawn wide public interest recently among researchers and ordinary families.
Unlike traditional medical equipment which is huge and costly, the small detector can be held in one hand. It works by analyzing tiny chemical molecules contained in human breath. Within one minute, it can send basic health-related data to a connected smartphone. Users no longer need to wait for long hours in hospital halls for routine checks. For people living in remote areas, such a device may greatly improve their access to early health warnings.
Scientists warn that the new tool is not designed to replace professional hospital examinations. It only provides reference information rather than final medical conclusions. Even so, it brings fresh possibilities for community health management. Local health-care stations are considering introducing the product for regular home visits.
Still, the promising invention has to cross several barriers before widely entering the market. Firstly, its accuracy can be influenced by food, drinks or recent exercise. Secondly, the present model is relatively expensive for most families. Researchers are now adjusting materials and production procedures. Their goal is to slash costs without lowering performance, so that more citizens can afford this convenient piece of equipment in the near future. Besides, strict official tests are required before it gets permission for mass sale.
If these problems are properly solved, the portable breath detector may change people’s daily health-check habits. Home health monitoring, once far-fetched, could gradually become part of ordinary life.
12. What is one advantage of the new breath-detecting device?
A. It can offer final medical treatment. B. It finishes basic detection quickly.
C. It can cure certain breathing diseases. D. It works without connecting to phones.
13. What can we infer from the text?
A. The detector has already been sold nationwide.
B. Food taken just-before may affect its test result.
C. Remote-area hospitals will be replaced by the device.
D. Official tests for the product have already been completed.
14. The underlined word “slash” in Paragraph 4 most probably means ________.
A. cut down B. add up C. figure out D. take over
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. New ways to prevent respiratory diseases B. Modern technology and hospital reform
C. Advantages and limits of a portable breath detector D. Scientific discoveries in human breath research

People often think procrastination (拖延) is simply laziness or poor time management. Imagine this: You sit down to write an essay, stare at a blank page, and begin to think, “I’m not good enough for this. I don’t know where to begin. What if I fail?” Instead of writing, you open a social media app. This behavior is not laziness; it’s a way to regulate the anxiety around the task. ____16____
When we procrastinate, we are aware not only that we are avoiding the task, but also that doing so is probably a bad idea. Yet we do it anyway. Why? Because putting off the task gives us momentary relief from negative feelings, such as panic and self-doubt. ____17____ It makes us more likely to procrastinate the next time.
____18____ Although avoiding the task makes us feel better for a moment, it does not solve the real problem. When we return to the task, the same feelings are waiting, often with more stress and self-blame. As this pattern repeats itself, procrastination gradually becomes a habit rather than a one-time choice.
Over time, the habit has measurably destructive effects on our mental and physical health. ____19____ It may also increase the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease in the long run.
What are healthy ways to manage the emotions that typically lead to procrastination? One way is to view the task from a positive perspective. Think about the good result of completing it, or remind yourself of a similar task that turned out well. ____20____ For example, delete distracting apps from your phone or use a long, difficult password. By making the easy escape less immediate, you give yourself a better chance to begin.
A. That relief, however, is only short-lived.
B. This pattern may involve different feelings.
C. Our brain treats that brief relief as a reward.
D. The task seems less pleasant for the moment.
E. It fuels persistent stress, anxiety, and even depression.
F. So procrastination is often about emotional management.
G. Additionally, making distractions less convenient can be effective.

I once suffered greatly from the fear of failure throughout my teenage years. Whenever I encountered tough obstacles and setbacks in my academic studies or daily life, I would choose to back off voluntarily rather than stick to persistent efforts. I firmly believed that giving up instantly could spare me from unnecessary pain and awkward embarrassment, so I seldom insisted on completing any challenging tasks until the very end. As time went by, I gradually got accustomed to staying safely in my comfort zone and eventually lost the precious courage to attempt new things. Even tiny and insignificant setbacks were enough to completely shake my fragile confidence and make me give in.
One mild and pleasant spring afternoon, Mom gently took me to her peaceful and well-kept small garden behind our house. There, I accidentally spotted a young and tender rose seedling (幼苗) bending painfully in the sudden strong wind. Its thin and delicate stem (枝干) trembled violently back and forth, and several newly grown tender buds (花蕾) on the branch were on the edge of falling off. I let out a soft sigh, fully convinced that such a fragile little seedling could never survive such severe wind. I reached out my hand, intending to pull it out gently to end its miserable suffering.
Stopping my action gently with a warm smile, Mom whispered a meaningful sentence that I have kept firmly in mind ever since that day, “Growth never takes place in comfort. It is struggles that shape strength.” She explained to me patiently that every blooming and strong flower had experienced countless storms and winds in its growth. It was endless hardships and trials that polished its unique and quiet beauty and strengthened its inner toughness.

根据第二段中“This causes a risk of “localized extinction”. The overpasses reconnect these separated populations, allowing them to find each other and maintain healthy genetic diversity.(这导致了“局部灭绝”的风险。这些天桥重新连接了这些被分隔的种群,使它们能够找到彼此并维持健康的基因多样性)”可知,华盛顿I-90公路上的生态桥解决了动物因被公路和河流阻隔而面临的局部灭绝风险,避免了多样性的丧失。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Even fish can use them when streams or wetlands are connected. On I-90, underpasses connecting wetlands to the Yakima River have allowed threatened bull trout to return to tributaries they hadn’t used in years.(当溪流或湿地被连接起来时,甚至连鱼类也可以使用它们。在I-90公路上,将湿地连接到亚基马河的地下通道使得受威胁的牛头鳟得以回到它们多年未用的支流)”可知,地下通道通过连接被分隔的水道来帮助濒危鱼类。
【3题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“In Wyoming, for example, fences direct migrating antelope toward overpasses instead of allowing them to step directly onto the highway. In Banff National Park, fences work together with crossings to reduce wildlife-vehicle crashes by up to 80 percent.(例如,在怀俄明州,围栏将迁徙的羚羊引导至天桥,而不是让它们直接走上公路。在班夫国家公园,围栏与通道协同工作,将车撞野生动物事故减少了多达80%)”可知,围栏在野生动物穿越系统中起到引导动物走向安全通道的作用。

A 5. B 6. C 7. C
根据第二段中“I posted commentary about Hamlet, as though my followers were desperate for my “original” takes. My social media timeline was full of such attempts to appear intelligent. So I removed all past posts and shared only writing links. At first I felt annoyed and anxious, but the feelings soon faded into embarrassment over my past actions.(我发了一些关于《哈姆雷特》的评论,好像我的粉丝们迫切想要看到我“原创”的见解。我的社交媒体时间线上满是这种试图显得聪明的举动。所以我删除了所有过去的帖子,只分享写作链接。起初我感到恼火和焦虑,但这些感觉很快就变成了对自己过去行为的尴尬)”可知,作者过去在社交媒体上发帖是为了显得聪明、给人留下深刻印象,后来意识到这一点后感到尴尬。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“When people open up about their problems, responses like “Wow, that happened to me once!” turn the conversation away from understanding. This shift response is biologically rewarding for the speaker, but uncomfortable for the listener.(当人们敞开心扉谈论他们的问题时,像“哇,我也有过一次这样的经历!”这样的回应会把对话从理解对方转向自己。这种转移式回应从生理上对说话者是有回报的,但对倾听者来说是不舒服的)”可知,这种回应方式将话题转向自己,以自我为中心,因此“conversational narcissism”意为“自我中心的谈话”。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Not talking at work proved easier. After analyzing how often and how long I spoke in meetings, I found I talked and interrupted too much. Now I apply Wait, which requires posing a question to yourself before speaking: “Why am I talking?” You can talk if the answer to Wait is convincing.(在工作中少说话反而更容易。
My urge to talk has decreased, the desire to interrupt has lessened, and my capacity to listen has grown. And the rest is silence.(现在我从不后悔没有发帖。我说话的冲动减少了,打断别人的欲望减弱了,而我倾听的能力增强了。其余的就是沉默)”可知,文章的核心主题是学会少说话、多倾听的智慧。C项“少说的智慧”能概括文章主旨,适合作最佳标题。

B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
A 9. D 10. B 11. B
根据第一段中的“Recently, a well-known US coffee chain’s new “Coffeehouse Code of Conduct” is making people buy something or leave, changing its previous casual attitude. Meanwhile, in Paris, traditional cafés are competing with trendy coffee shops, with locals complaining that American style takeaway coffee is ruining the French tradition of taking their time.(最近,美国知名咖啡连锁店出台新的《咖啡馆行为准则》,要求顾客消费否则离开,一改以往宽松态度。与此同时在巴黎,传统咖啡馆和新潮咖啡店竞争,当地人抱怨美式外带咖啡正在毁掉法国人从容享受的传统。)”可知,文中指出不同咖啡文化之间存在冲突。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“During World War II, we spent whole days in the Café de Flore through the freezing winter and always had a shock of pleasure, emerging from the cold darkness, coming into this warm, bright place. We felt at home, safe.(二战期间,在严寒的冬天,我们整天待在花神咖啡馆,从阴冷黑暗中走进这个温暖明亮的地方时,总会感到一阵欣喜。我们感觉像在家一样,很安全。)”可知,作者引用Beauvoir的话是为了表明咖啡馆有抚慰人心的作用。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“That gets to the heart of what good cafés are: third places, the term coined by the sociologist Ray Oldenburg to describe spaces that are neither home nor work. These neutral spaces are also accessible and inclusive, allowing visitors to keep a low profile and providing room for conversation and playfulness.(这触及优质咖啡馆的核心:第三空间,社会学家雷·奥尔登堡创造该词,描述既不是家也不是工作场所的空间。这些中立空间开放且包容,允许访客低调停留,提供交流与休闲的空间。)”可知,城市广场不属于家或工作场所,是开放包容的公共空间,属于第三空间。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“With many shops closed in the UK, why not turn them into community centres, repair cafés, or meeting spots? It would be nice to chat about it somewhere — maybe over coffee, maybe not.(英国很多店铺已经关闭,为何不把它们改造成社区中心、修理咖啡馆或者聚会地点?能在某个地方聊聊这件事会很不错,或许配一杯咖啡,或许不用。)”可知,作者提议改造闲置店铺,对打造新的第三空间持支持态度。
B 13. B 14. A 15. C
根据第二段中的“Within one minute, it can send basic health-related data to a connected smartphone.(在一分钟之内,它可以把和健康相关的基础数据发送到相连的智能手机上。)”
根据第四段中的“Firstly, its accuracy can be influenced by food, drinks or recent exercise.(首先,它的准确度会受到食物、饮品或是近期运动的影响。)”
根据第四段中的“Their goal is to slash costs without lowering performance, so that more citizens can afford this convenient piece of equipment in the near future.(他们的目标是在不降低性能的前提下slash成本,以便在不久的将来更多人能够买得起这款便捷设备。)”
F 17. C 18. A 19. E 20. G
上文“This behavior is not laziness; it’s a way to regulate the anxiety around the task.(这种行为不是懒惰;它是一种调节任务带来的焦虑的方式)”说明拖延行为本质上是调节任务引发的焦虑,而非懒惰。
上文“Because putting off the task gives us momentary relief from negative feelings, such as panic and self-doubt.(因为推迟任务能让我们从恐慌和自我怀疑等负面情绪中获得暂时的解脱)”说明拖延能带来从负面情绪中的短暂解脱。 C项中的“that brief relief”与上文中的“momentary relief”相呼应,且C项内容正是后文“It makes us more likely to procrastinate the next time.(这使我们下次更有可能拖延)”中It所指代的内容。
下文“Although avoiding the task makes us feel better for a moment, it does not solve the real problem.(虽然逃避任务能让我们暂时感觉好些,但这并不能解决真正的问题)”说明逃避只能带来短暂的好转,无法解决真正的问题。 A项中的“That relief”与上文中的“momentary relief”相呼应,“only short-lived”与下文中的“for a moment”和“does not solve the real problem”相呼应。
上文“Over time, the habit has measurably destructive effects on our mental and physical health.(随着时间的推移,这种习惯对我们的心理和身体健康产生可衡量的破坏性影响)”说明拖延习惯对心理和身体健康均有破坏性影响。空后“It may also increase the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease in the long run.(从长远来看,它还可能增加高血压和心脏病的风险)”说明它还可能增加高血压和心脏病的风险,属于身体健康层面。 E项中的It指代上文中的“the habit”,“stress, anxiety, and even depression”与上文中的“mental and physical health”相呼应。
上文“One way is to view the task from a positive perspective. Think about the good result of completing it, or remind yourself of a similar task that turned out well.(一种方法是从积极的角度看待任务。想想完成任务后的好结果,或者提醒自己一个类似的任务结果很好)”提出了第一种应对拖延的方法:从积极角度看待任务。空后“For example, delete distracting apps from your phone or use a long, difficult password.(例如,从手机中删除让人分心的应用程序,或者设置一个很长、很难的密码)”举例说明如何让逃避变得不那么容易。 G项中的“making distractions less convenient”与下文中的“By making the easy escape less immediate”相呼应,Additionally与上文中的One way构成方法上的并列。

Paragraph 1: I stared at the trembling little rose seedling in silence. Never had I witnessed such touching perseverance in a tiny creature. With its slender stem bending repeatedly in the raging wind, the little seedling refused to abandon itself, clinging tightly to the moist soil in the garden. It was its silent but firm resistance against hardships that swept away my long-term cowardice and self-doubt. Recalling my habitual avoidance of trivial difficulties, I felt a sense of guilt. Realizing that permanent comfort only breeds timidity and mediocrity, I sincerely admired the seedling’s brave struggle, which calmed my negative mind and awakened my inner courage.
Paragraph 2: Inspired by the little seedling and Mom’s words, I decided to change myself bravely. No longer did I escape tough tasks or flinch from sudden setbacks. With positive and determined attitudes replacing my former timidity, I dared to tackle tricky problems actively and stick to every challenging goal. Facing occasional failures, I chose to reflect on my mistakes and make steady improvements rather than give up halfway. Gradually, I accumulated abundant experience and regained solid confidence. Months later, the tough seedling blossomed vibrantly in the sun. I finally comprehended the profound true meaning of Mom’s words.
