When designer Sunshine Thacker and her family relocated to New York’s Hudson Valley from San Antonio, the move was a breath of fresh air. The family of three found a rental home and a school for their now 12-year-old son while they looked for something more permanent. In 2022, they found the perfect property.
Though designing and building a house can test anyone’s nerves, Ms. Thacker enjoyed the opportunity to create a space for herself and those she loves. “What was great about the break from doing work for other people was that I got to make work that was really meaningful for me,” she said.
Ms. Thacker wanted it to be the kind of house her family could live in forever. It’s all one floor, the doorways are wide, and the bathrooms are tile murals (瓷砖壁画) of drawings by her son, Ace. “I imagine being in this house when I’m 80 and still loving that I get to be surrounded by something Ace did,” Ms. Thacker said.
The project started with Ms. Thacker’s love for a drawing her son made on the back of a notebook in third grade. He had drawn a collection of creatures of different shapes and sizes. To bring the mural to life, she laid out the primary bathroom walls as if they were connected and drew the characters over them. She played with different creatures, giving one in particular a starring role. Though she has years of experience with clay from making vases, this was her first mural. “This is part of what I love about doing something new,” she said. “The whole part where you just can’t be afraid to fail.”
Celebrating her son’s creativity with this project was healing (有治愈作用的) for Ms. Thacker, allowing her to find joy in “seeing your child and their creativity and letting it exist without comment, to just be accepting.”
4. What contributed to Ms. Thacker’s enjoyment in designing their house?
A. The encouragement from her family. B. The flexible working hours.
C. The motivation from within. D. The impressive property.
5. What did Ms. Thacker expect of their house?
A. It lay next to a school. B. It could serve as a model.
C. It looked antique and perfect. D. It reflected love and connection.
6. What can we say about Ms. Thacker during her first mural project?
A. She forced herself to learn clay skills. B. She experienced new drawing techniques.
C. She experimented with design innovation. D. She got inspiration from cartoon characters.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. What Makes a House Spacious B. Where Childhood Art Finds a Home
C. How a Child’s Drawing Stands Out D. What Matters for Home Improvements
C
A shining big box sits in the centre of a stage. As the crowd cheers, Hoshimachi Suisei emerges from the box, her blue hair artfully tied up. She kicks off the show with her hit song “Stellar Stellar” before dozens of other virtual performers take turns singing, dancing and chatting with the audience. The thousands of fans in attendance could not care less that Ms Hoshimachi and her teammates are digital avatars (虚拟形象).
These entertainers are known as “VTubers” and they do not show their real faces; instead, they often use motion tracking technology to project their movements onto their cartoon avatars in real time.
The phenomenon started in Japan around a decade ago as a great curiosity, but it has now spread across the world. According to Mordor Intelligence, a research firm, the global VTuber industry could reach $4.5bn by 2030. While Japanese VTubers dominate, other countries are getting in on the act. VTuber talent agencies such as Hololive Production have opened outposts in the West to target English-speaking audiences, with great success. Gawr Gura, an American whose avatar wears a shark costume, has 4.6m subscribers on YouTube.
Patrick Galbraith of Senshu University in Tokyo notes that VTubers’ appeal lies in their “freewheeling” communication style: they may suddenly burst into song or shout random statements. Devoted fans, called “clippers”, turn these moments into short, shareable videos and add subtitles. Some clips get millions of views on platforms such as TikTok. Talent agencies, for their part, welcome clipping as free marketing.
Given that AI models can write songs, generate artwork and have realistic conversations, might VTubers be replaced by AITubers? By offering round-the-clock amusement, AITubers can give more of what fans desire.
Yet the industry is sanguine about VTubers. Motoaki Tanigo, the boss of Cover Corporation, which owns Hololive Production, has said that “Fans are drawn to VTubers because they know there is a real person behind the screen, someone they can connect with and support.”
8. How does the author introduce the topic of “VTubers”?
A. By making a comparison. B. By describing a vivid scene.
C. By introducing a concept. D. By presenting research data.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the VTuber industry?
A. Its global growth. B. Its target audience.
C. Its main limitations. D. Its market estimates.
10. What is the key factor behind VTubers’ success according to Patrick Galbraith?
A. Their unpredictable style. B. Their worldwide agencies.
C. Their promotion strategies. D. Their round-the-clock service.
11. What does the underlined word “sanguine” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Anxious. B. Hesitant. C. Neutral. D. Optimistic.
D
Red wine was once regarded as a benefit for health that could protect the heart and even extend life expectancy. But while scientists have denied this claim, they believe that at least one red wine component called resveratrol may hold genuine health benefits.
A trial launched this week will assess whether a low amount of the chemical could help keep bowel cancer (肠癌) at bay. The study, one of the largest to date testing drugs for cancer prevention, will register patients who are at risk of the disease.
“With the Colo-Prevent trial, we are conducting a unique experiment to see how drugs could stop bowel polyps (肠息肉) from growing,” said Prof Karen Brown, the trial’s lead investigator. “This trial could have big consequences for how we prevent bowel cancer in people who are most likely to develop the disease as they get older.”
The trial builds on more than a decade of work by Brown’s lab, which previously found that purified resveratrol can slow tumour (肿瘤) growth in mice and can reach the bowel undigested.
The trial is registering people aged between 50 and 73 who have been found to have bowel polyps. Some will have their polyps removed and be given either a drug named aspirin by itself or a combination of aspirin and another drug named metformin daily for three years, for the main trial. Others will take purified resveratrol for one year as part of a sub-study.
All patients will then be given an examination to determine if the polyps have started growing again. If the trial is successful, any of the treatments tested could be offered to potential patients to reduce the risk of bowel polyps forming, and with that reduce the risk of bowel cancer in the future.
“This trial opens the door to a new era of cancer research, where cancer becomes much more preventable through cutting-edge science,” said Dr Iain Foulkes at Cancer Research UK. “The insights gained from the trial will change how we think about cancer prevention and give more people the chance of longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.”
12. What is the trial aimed at?
A. Exploring bowel cancer origins. B. Confirming red wine’s health benefits.
C. Lessening a specific drug’s side effects. D. Assessing resveratrol’s cancer-preventive effects.
13. Why is the previous work by Brown’s lab mentioned?
A. To highlight the trial’s complexity. B. To compare different research methods.
C. To offer supportive evidence for the trial. D. To determine the key factors affecting the trial.
14. What do we know about the participants?
A. They’re under 70 years of age. B. They’ll take medicine as required.
C. They suffer from bowel cancer. D. They’ll have bowel polyp removal.
15. What does Foulkes think of the trial?
A. It is overly ambitious. B. It is truly pioneering.
C. It poses significant risks. D. It needs further insights.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。有两项为多余选项。
Many people believe that curiosity is a natural gift, something you either have or don’t. ____16____ Curiosity, researchers argue, is more like a muscle that can be strengthened with regular exercise. Unfortunately, as we grow older, most of us lose our appetite for new questions.
One reason is that formal education often rewards answers rather than questions. At school, students are praised when they supply the “right” solution. ____17____ Over time, they learn to avoid asking questions that might reveal gaps in their knowledge. The fear of appearing ignorant gradually kills their natural curiosity.
____18____ When we meet something unexpected, our brains enter a state of mild alarm. We feel discomfort because our existing mental models cannot explain what we are seeing. Many people’s first reaction is to turn away, to dismiss the strange observation as a mistake. Curious people, however, treat that uneasy feeling not as a threat but as an invitation.
This does not mean curious individuals are endlessly seeking random bits of unimportant information. ____19____ It is focused, driven by a desire to fill specific gaps in their understanding. A curious physicist does not want to know every fact about every star, but to resolve a particular puzzle about how stars evolve.
____20____ It requires actively noticing what you do not know, tolerating the discomfort of unresolved puzzles, and choosing to chase answers instead of ignoring uncertainty. Anyone can build this skill, if they are willing to practise.
A. They are taught that uncertainty equals failure.
B. True curiosity is not aimless collection of facts.
C. Curiosity involves a special reaction to surprise.
D. Curiosity is therefore separate from intelligence.
E. But this popular view does not hold up under research.
F. Becoming more curious takes consistent, deliberate effort.
G. Teachers seldom encourage students to challenge textbook statements.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As I opened a new jigsaw puzzle (拼图) on the living room floor, a thousand tiny pieces fell out of the box like colorful raindrops, spreading everywhere. The picture on the cover showed a peaceful view of the sea: a lighthouse, calm blue waters, and a sky painted in soft evening light. I stared at it with determination — but also with doubt. Could I really piece this together?
At first, I started with excitement, picking up random pieces and trying to fit them together. But nothing worked. Every attempt failed, and soon the puzzle looked like a mess. Frustration grew inside me. “This is impossible,” I said quietly, pushing a few pieces aside.
Just then, my grandfather walked into the room. He had been reading by the window. “Having trouble already?” he asked with a gentle smile.
I said, “They all look the same. I don’t even know where to start.”
He laughed a little and sat down beside me. “Every puzzle starts with patience. Begin with the edges,” he said, his voice calm and certain.
That was the first turning point. Taking a deep breath, I followed his wisdom. I searched carefully for the straight-edged pieces. Slowly, the outside line began to take shape. Mountains of pieces suddenly seemed a little smaller.
For a while, things moved along well. I grouped similar colors together — sky blues in one group, sea greens in another. My grandfather watched quietly, occasionally pointing out a corner piece I had missed. I began to feel proud of my system.
But just when I thought I had mastered it, I ran into another problem. Some pieces looked nearly identical. I forced them into spots that seemed right, only to realize later that the picture didn’t line up. My “perfect system” had failed. I felt upset again.
Grandfather smiled knowingly. “You can’t force what doesn’t fit,” he said gently. “Sometimes it’s better to wait and look again.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
Grandfather’s words stayed in my mind as I studied the pieces once more.

Grandfather nodded with satisfaction as I placed the final piece into its spot.

A. Anxious. B. Hesitant. C. Neutral. D. Optimistic.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. A 11. D

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“A shining big box sits in the centre of a stage. As the crowd cheers, Hoshimachi Suisei emerges from the box, her blue hair artfully tied up. She kicks off the show with her hit song “Stellar Stellar” before dozens of other virtual performers take turns singing, dancing and chatting with the audience.(一个亮闪闪的巨型箱体安放在舞台中央。
根据第三段“The phenomenon started in Japan around a decade ago as a great curiosity, but it has now spread across the world. …the global VTuber industry could reach $4.5bn by 2030. While Japanese VTubers dominate, other countries are getting in on the act.(大约十年前,这一现象在日本兴起,当时还只是新鲜事物,而如今已经传遍全球。……到2030 年,全球虚拟主播产业规模有望达到45亿美元。尽管日本虚拟主播占据主导地位,但其他国家也纷纷入局。)”可知,第三段主要介绍了VTuber行业的全球发展。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Patrick Galbraith… notes that VTubers’ appeal lies in their “freewheeling” communication style: they may suddenly burst into song or shout random statements. (……Patrick Galbraith指出,VTuber的吸引力在于他们“随心所欲”的交流风格:他们可能会突然唱歌或大喊随机的话。)”可知,根据Patrick Galbraith,VTuber成功的关键因素是它们不可预测的风格。
【11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段“Given that AI models can write songs, generate artwork and have realistic conversations, might VTubers be replaced by AITubers? By offering round-the-clock amusement, AITubers can give more of what fans desire.(鉴于人工智能模型能够创作歌曲、生成美术作品,还可以进行逼真对话,虚拟主播(VTuber)会不会被AI虚拟主播(AITuber)取代?AI虚拟主播可以全天候提供娱乐,能够更多地满足粉丝的需求。)”可知,第五段提出了一个担忧:随着AI技术的发展,VTuber是否会被AITuber取代?第六段句首使用“Yet(然而)”进行转折,表明行业对VTuber的态度与上述担忧相反。下文“Fans are drawn to VTubers because they know there is a real person behind the screen, someone they can connect with and support.(粉丝被虚拟主播吸引,是因为他们知道屏幕背后有一个真实的人,一个可以与之建立联结、给予支持的对象。)”

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. B

【答案】16. E 17. A 18. C 19. B 20. F

【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m writing to tell you about the green environmental outdoor practice activity that you asked about.
The activity was held in a nearby park last Saturday. We worked together to pick up rubbish and sort waste for recycling. We also put up posters to call on people to live a low-carbon life and protect our environment.
I gained a lot from the experience. It taught me that environmental protection is everyone’s duty. Small actions can make a big difference to our planet. I will keep practicing eco-friendly habits in my daily life.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Grandfather’s words stayed in my mind as I studied the pieces once more.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Grandfather’s words stayed in my mind as I studied the pieces once more. I calmed down and abandoned my previous impulsive way of forcing pieces to fit. Instead of sticking to my fixed grouping method, I took my time to observe the tiny differences in shape and pattern among those similar pieces. Whenever I met tricky parts, I chose to set them aside temporarily and move on to easier ones. Gradually, more parts of the puzzle fell into place. The outline of the lighthouse stood out vividly, and the messy pile of pieces turned into an orderly and beautiful sea scene.
Paragraph 2:
Grandfather nodded with satisfaction as I placed the final piece into its spot. The whole delicate picture was perfectly completed, bathing in warm evening light. A sense of accomplishment and joy welled up in my heart. I finally understood grandfather’s words. True patience means not keeping stubbornly to wrong methods, but adjusting wisely and waiting patiently. This puzzle taught me a valuable life lesson: never force things blindly. Only with calmness and flexibility can we overcome difficulties and achieve success.
