I had no idea it was possible to sweat so heavily without engaging in any physical activity. I wasn’t standing at the open door of a plane thousands of feet in the air, ready to jump out into the wild, blue sky. Rather, I was simply sitting on my bed, wearing my most comfortable clothes, and waiting to hit the “Enter classroom” button on my computer. I had signed up for an online language lesson with a Portuguese language tutor. For the past few months, I had been studying the language and I knew video chat was the next best option.
As I clicked the button, a friendly face popped up on the screen in front of me. At that moment, my mind froze. Feeling my nervousness, my tutor said something I still remember today, “Learning a new language is like showing your weakness to the world. It can be uncomfortable.” The ice was officially broken. As I’ve progressed along on my language journey, I often think back to her insight.
She is right. We take as a given the power to express ourselves freely, and when that power is taken away, we are brought to a place of weakness. Yet if we keep pushing forward despite this weakness, we will unlock a wealth of valuable gains.
My three-year-old son has big feelings but has insufficient vocabulary to properly express himself. When I started learning Portuguese, I realized how difficult it must be for him to be understood in the adult world around him. I’m a better parent now.
When my husband and I finally visited Portugal and ordered food in Portuguese at a small shop, the server thanked us for taking time to learn their language. Learning Portuguese taught me that attempting to learn someone else’s language shows respect not only for their homeland but for the people themselves.
Taking on the challenge of Portuguese has also awakened a fire within me. If you had told me a year ago that I would be taking a writing course, competing in competitions at my gym, or learning about car maintenance, I truly wouldn’t have believed it. Now I deeply believe that challenging yourself can be rewarding in ways you will never know unless you attempt it.
4. What was the author doing in Paragraph 1?
A. Working out at home. B. Taking an entrance exam.
C. Preparing herself for a class. D. Signing up for a language club.
5. Hearing the tutor’s words, the author felt ________.
A. shocked B. defensive C. concerned D. relieved
6. After learning Portuguese, the author ________.
A. showed competitive advantages B. started to try Portuguese cuisine
C. developed a passion for travelling D. became an understanding mother
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. It is never too late to learn something new.
B. Taking on challenges may bring perfection.
C. Leaving the comfort zone offers new visions of life.
D. Language learning helps clear up misunderstandings.

Scientists have revealed much of the basics about earthquakes: tectonic plates (构造板块) move, causing strain energy (应变能) to build up, and that energy eventually releases in the form of an earthquake. However, forecasting earthquakes remains a significant challenge, which was evidenced by the 2011 great Tohoku earthquake. In addition to causing a tsunami that led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster, it resulted in more than 18,000 deaths.
In recent years, researchers have been trying to figure out a possible relation between the sun and earthquakes. Based on a previous study that connected solar activity with earthquakes, a study conducted by researchers from the University of Tsukuba (UT) cast light on this possibility, confirming that sunspot numbers had some influence on earthquakes and Earth’s climate, as affected by solar heat, played a role.
“Solar heat drives atmospheric temperature changes, which in turn can affect things like rock properties and underground water movement,” said Junqueira Saldanha, leader of the research team. “Such changes can make rocks tend to break apart. For example, the changes in rainfall and snowmelt can affect the pressure on tectonic plate boundaries. While these factors may not be the main drivers of earthquakes, they could still be playing a role that can help to predict earthquakes.”
Among other findings, the researchers used mathematical and computational methods to analyze earthquake data alongside solar activity records and surface temperatures on Earth. They observed that when they included Earth surface temperatures into their model, the forecasting became more accurate, especially for shallow earthquakes. “That makes sense, since heat and water mostly affect the upper layers of the Earth’s crust (地壳),” said Saldanha.
The findings suggest the transfer of solar heat to the surface of the Earth does affect earthquakes, however minutely, and that incorporating solar activity predictions into detailed Earth temperature models may help issue earthquake forecasts. “It’s an exciting direction, and we hope our study can decipher the bigger picture of what causes earthquakes,” said Saldanha.
8. Why did the author mention Tohoku earthquake in paragraph 1?
A. To demonstrate the movement of tectonic plates.
B. To illustrate the difficulty in earthquake forecast.
C. To reveal the heavy losses caused by earthquakes.
D. To stress the necessity of weakening strain energy.
9. What does the study by UT mainly focus on?
A. The climate change caused by earthquakes.
B. The impact of solar activity on atmosphere.
C. The reasons for increased sunspot numbers.
D. The link between sunspots and earthquakes.
10. Which of the following would Saldanha agree?
A. Solar heat decides earthquake frequency.
B. Tectonic plate pressure grows constantly.
C. Earthquakes occur in the crust’s upper layer.
D. Solar activity data helps predict earthquakes.
11. What does the underlined word “decipher” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Reveal. B. Distinguish. C. Expand. D. Assess.
D
Ask students to describe their brain, and they’re likely to suggest a computer, a command center, or maybe a lightning-fast communications network. But they’d be better off thinking of the brain as a muscle that gets stronger with use. Researchers now understand that IQ isn’t fixed at birth. Just as we get more physically fit from exercising, we can build brainpower through the act of learning.
Children who adopt what psychologist Carol Dweck calls a growth mindset understand that intelligence isn’t fixed but can be developed through effort. In Mindset, Dweck explains why students who have a growth mindset are more willing to tackle challenges, learn from failure, and see criticism as useful feedback rather than an excuse to give up. This is the kind of thinking that keeps students motivated, even when learning is hard work.
The good news is that even the mindset isn’t fixed. A growth mindset can be learned and enhanced by messages that praise persistence and set high expectations. For example, help students understand that challenging assignments will stretch their “thinking muscles”. At the same time, provide them with necessary support so they don’t get discouraged.
It is widely believed that all brains are not equal and that context and ability influence learning. The brain connects new information to the old and can be changed by experience.
Effective teaching strategies help students move toward higher-order thinking, or what neurologists call executive (执行) function. As professor Judy Willis explains, “When educators offer students chances to put their learning into practice, particularly by engaging them in genuine, personally relevant activities accompanied by formative assessments and corrective feedback throughout a unit, the facts students learn are no longer rote memory (死记硬背). Instead, these facts become solidly integrated into an interconnected memory framework, rather than being deserted due to lack of use.”
Of course, all this brain activity is happening in a unique way for each student. By addressing learners’ individual needs, educators can help students strengthen the bonds that will lead to deeper understanding.
12. Why does the author compare the brain to a muscle?
A. To prove they possess memory cells.
B. To illustrate they work in similar ways.
C. To show they can be strengthened through exercise.
D. To emphasize they are fundamental to our body.
13. What are children with a growth mindset like according to Dweck?
A. They tend to shy away from trouble.
B. They prefer positive feedback from others.
C. They regard intelligence as an unchangeable quality.
D. They view barriers as opportunities for personal growth.
14. Which of the following enhances executive function?
A. Positive feedback. B. Interactive activities.
C. Practical engagement. D. Independent learning.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. IQ and Its Influence on Learning
B. A Look Into How Students Describe Their Brain
C. The Significance of Executive Function in Education
D. Growth Mindset Contributes to Brainpower Building
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,共12.5分)
Senior 3 is often described as the hardest year of school. Most students feel worried at some point, and many feel they are falling behind. But worry itself is not the problem — going through the motions without a plan is. With a few simple changes, the year can feel more manageable. ____16____
One thing that helps is knowing what you are working toward. It does not have to be a specific university — it could be a subject you want to improve, or a score you hope to reach. Write it down somewhere you will see it each morning. When the work feels endless, that small note can remind you why you started. ____17____
Sleep is another area where students cut corners. Staying up late to study seems productive, but a tired brain does not hold information well. Most people need seven to eight hours to function properly. ____18____ An extra hour of sleep is often worth more than an extra hour of review.
It also helps to test yourself instead of just reading notes over and over. Cover the page and try to recall the main points. If you cannot explain something in your own words, you probably do not fully understand it yet. ____19____
Finally, try to keep some balance. A hobby, a walk with friends, or even just sitting quietly for ten minutes can keep stress from building up. Your value as a person is not determined by a single exam score. ____20____
A. Here are a few habits that can make the year less stressful.
B. Start by figuring out what you want to achieve.
C. A rested brain picks up new information faster than a tired one.
D. Testing yourself shows what you actually know and what you still need to work on.
E. Taking care of your mind and body helps you keep going when the pressure is high.
F. Studying late into the night is a habit many students are proud of.
G. The more hours you spend studying, the better your results will be.

The late afternoon felt perfectly ordinary. Sixteen-year-old Leo was doing his math homework at his desk when a low rumble (隆隆声) started. The floor began to shake gently at first, like a heavy truck passing by. But within seconds, the gentle shake turned into a violent one. Books flew from shelves, the light above his head swung wildly, and a deep, strange sound came from the walls. Leo’s heart pounded fast. He had felt small earthquakes before, but this was different. It was big and terrifying.
Immediately, he dropped to the floor and hid under the strong wooden desk, covering his head with his arms as he had learned in school drills. The noise was deafening — a deep roar from the earth mixed with the sounds of cracking concrete and breaking glass. The world shook uncontrollably, and dust filled the air, making it hard to breathe. After what felt like an hour, the violent movement stopped, replaced by a sudden silence.
Leo slowly came out from his shelter. His room was a mess of fallen books and broken things, but the walls were still standing. His first clear thought was of his neighbor, Mrs Gable. She was an elderly woman who lived alone in the nearby house. She used a stick to walk and moved very slowly. A cold fear seized Leo. Was she trapped? Was she hurt?
Without stopping to consider his own safety, Leo rushed to her door and opened it. The hallway was dark; the power was out. The air was thick with dust. Pieces of broken wall and ceiling littered the floor. He called out Mrs Gable’s name loudly, his voice echoing in the quiet. There was no answer. Her apartment door was partly open but blocked by a heavy wooden box that had fallen from inside. His hands trembled as he pushed against it, but it was too heavy. He knew he had to find another way in. He knew he had to reach her.
注意事项:1.续写词数应为150个左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Taking a deep breath, Leo inched through the narrow opening.

C. Expand. D. Assess.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. D 11. A

【答案】12. C 13. D 14. C 15. D

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】
Taking a deep breath, Leo inched through the narrow opening. He squinted his eyes against the thick dust, scanning every corner anxiously. Soon, he spotted Mrs Gable sitting on the floor, her walking stick lying aside. Panic flooded her face as she stared at fallen bricks around her. Leo hurried forward and knelt down beside her. Calming his own racing heart, he gently checked whether she got hurt. Fortunately, she only suffered minor bruises. Relief swept over Leo. He helped her stand up slowly, supporting her weak body with his own shoulder.
He carefully guided her through the dusty dark hallway. Mrs Gable trembled, grasping Leo’s arm tightly out of fright. Leo kept talking softly to comfort her, encouraging her to take one step at a time. Though sharp broken pieces lay everywhere on the ground, they managed to step over them cautiously. The moment they got out of the damaged building, bright daylight wrapped around them. Seeing safe surroundings, Mrs Gable let out a sigh of gratitude. Leo smiled, proud that he had made a difference in the emergency.
