Pi (π) is a number that has fascinated people for a very long time. It is the ratio(比例)of a circle's circumference to its diameter. It is an 1 number because it is an irrational number, which means its decimal form never ends and 2 repeats.
Long ago, people used simple numbers to estimate Pi. Ancient Egyptians and Babylonians found a value 3 to 3. Around 250 BC, the Greek scientist Archimedes invented a 4 using polygons. He 5 shapes inside and outside a circle to find upper and lower limits for Pi. He calculated that Pi is between 3.1408 and 3.1428.
Around the same time in China, the 6 Liu Hui used a similar method called the "cutting circle method." He kept 7 the sides of a polygon to get closer to a circle. Later, Zu Chongzhi used this method and recorded a very accurate value for Pi: between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927. This was a world record that stood for over 1000 years.
The 8 "π" itself has a history. The Welsh mathematician William Jones first used the Greek letter π to represent Pi in 1706. Later, the famous mathematician Euler made it 9 . Before this, people used different symbols or just words.
Today, computers can calculate Pi to trillions of digits. It is a challenge for computers and a symbol of human curiosity. Every year on 10 14 , people celebrate Pi Day to celebrate this amazing number.

Something big is coming to Shenzhen. In November 2026, the city will host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting. This is a very important event for the Asia-Pacific region.
APEC stands for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(亚太经合组织). It has 21 member economies. China hosted APEC twice before—in Shanghai in 2001 and in Beijing in 2014. Now it is Shenzhen's turn. Shenzhen will become the third Chinese city to host this meeting.
Shenzhen is a young and modern city. It is home to big tech companies like Huawei and Tencent. It is also a leader in new energy and digital technology. The APEC theme for 2026 is "Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together." Shenzhen's spirit of innovation and openness fits this theme well. Also, Shenzhen is a city of immigrants(移民). Volunteers are learning how to help international visitors. Some walls in Longhua District are being painted with colorful street art by both local people and foreigners living in Shenzhen. A 3D floor painting called "Seeing the Future" was created near Shenzhen North Station by artists from different countries.

Imagine a book so important that a British scientist called it “China’s 17th-century encyclopedia of technology.” This book is Tiangong Kaiwu(《天工开物》), or The Exploitation of the Works of Nature. It was written by a Ming Dynasty scientist named Song Yingxing.
Song Yingxing was born in 1587 in Jiangxi Province. Like many young men of his time, he studied hard for the imperial examinations(科举考试). He passed the provincial exam in 1615, but then he failed the national exam six times. Instead of giving up, Song decided to do something different. He turned away from the world of officials and began to study the practical skills of farmers and workers.
Song spent years traveling across China. He visited farms, workshops, and mines. He talked to farmers about how they grew rice. He watched workers make paper, build boats, and forge iron. He wrote down everything he learned.
In 1637, Song published Tiangong Kaiwu. The book has 18 chapters and includes over 120 detailed illustrations. It covers almost every kind of production in ancient China: growing grain, making cloth and dye, producing salt and sugar, building boats and carts, casting metal, making paper, and even mining coal and gems. The illustrations are so clear that a reader could learn a skill just by looking at them.
Why was this book so special? Before Tiangong Kaiwu, books about technology were rare. Most scholars only cared about poetry, history, and philosophy. Song Yingxing believed that knowledge about farming and crafts was just as important. He put “grain” and “clothing” at the beginning of the book and “pearls and jade” at the end. This showed his idea: food and clothing for common people matter more than luxuries for the rich.
The book also traveled far beyond China. It reached Japan, Korea, and Europe. In Europe, it helped solve real problems. For example, European farmers learned from the book’s better plow designs. European silk makers used Song’s advice on preventing silkworm diseases. Even Charles Darwin, the famous scientist, called it an “authoritative work”.
Today, Tiangong Kaiwu is still valued. Its message is simple but powerful: respect labor, learn from practice, and use both nature and human skill to create a better life.
16. What does the underlined word “practical” probably mean in the passage?
A. 理论的 B. 实用的 C. 困难的 D. 古老的
17. Why did Song Yingxing decide to write about farming and crafts?
A. Because he failed the imperial exams and wanted to help ordinary people.
B. Because the emperor ordered him to write a book.
C. Because he wanted to become a famous poet.
D. Because he grew up on a farm.
18. What can we infer from the order of the book’s chapters?
A. Song Yingxing thought pearls and jade were the most important things.
B. Song Yingxing valued daily necessities more than luxury goods.
C. Song Yingxing did not like farmers or workers.
D. Song Yingxing only cared about making money.
19. How did Tiangong Kaiwu affect Europe?
A. It made European scholars give up their own research.
B. It helped improve European farming and silk production.
C. It caused European farmers to stop growing rice.
D. It had no real influence on Europe.
20. Where is this passage most probably from?
A. A science fiction novel. B.A story book.
C. A travel guidebook for Europe. D. A history or culture magazine.
C
On September 16, 2026, the Pinglu Canal(平陆运河)officially opened. It is China's first canal connecting a river directly to the sea since 1949. But the dream behind it is much older.
More than a hundred years ago, Sun Yat-sen wrote about this idea in his famous book The General Plan of National Construction(《建国方略》). He suggested using Qinzhou as an important port to shorten the distance from southwestern China to the sea. However, at that time, China was too poor and weak to build such a canal. The dream had to wait.
In August 2022, the construction finally began. The canal is 134.2 kilometers long. It connects the Xijiang River to the Beibu Gulf. Now ships from Guangxi and other southwestern provinces can go directly to the sea. The shipping route is shorter, and costs can drop by 18% to 30%.
One of the hardest parts was the Qishi Hub(企石枢纽). The underground rock was soft and broke easily when it met water. The foundation pit was 55 meters deep—about the height of an 18-story building.
The person in charge of this difficult section was Liu Wenbin, a female engineer born in 1986. She earned her PhD in geotechnical engineering from Tianjin University. Before coming to the Pinglu Canal, she had already worked on two other mega-projects: the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link and the Dalian Bay Undersea Tunnel.
At the Qishi Hub, water was leaking into the pit. Some people suggested covering the whole pit with concrete, but Liu said no. The pit was too deep, and that plan would cost too much and take too long. Instead, she led her team to use a special detection method. They increased the number of test points from a few hundred to nearly 400,000. After many days and nights, they found the exact leaks.
Liu's team was very young—the average age was under 28. They held over 110 technical discussions and applied for 8 patents. Liu often worked long hours at the construction site. She said, "The Pinglu Canal is a century project. We must make sure it is perfect."
Liu is not the only woman who contributed. Jiang Zhifang, a testing engineer, was called the "female door god" because she never let any substandard work pass. She even returned over ten batches of bad materials.
The Pinglu Canal is more than just a waterway. It is a symbol of how hard work and new ideas can turn a century-old dream into reality.
21. Who is the author of The General Plan of National Construction?
A. Liu Wenbin. B. Jiang Zhifang. C. Sun Yat-sen. D. A Tianjin University professor.
22. Why did China have to build the Pinglu Canal?
A. Because Guangxi has no rivers at all.
B. Because the canal is only 134.2 kilometers long.
C. Because the Xijiang River flows directly into the Beibu Gulf.
D. Because goods from southwestern China had to travel a long way out of their way to reach the sea.
23. Which of the following statements about Liu Wenbin is NOT true according to the passage?
A. She was born in 1986 and earned her PhD from Tianjin University.
B. She had worked on the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link before the Pinglu Canal.
C. She agreed to cover the whole pit with concrete to stop the water.
D. She led her team to increase the number of test points to nearly 400,000.
24. What qualities of Liu Wenbin can we see from the passage?
A. Careless and lazy. B. Serious, hardworking and responsible.
C. Afraid of difficulties and new ideas. D. Quiet and unwilling to work with others.
25. What does the successful opening of the Pinglu Canal mean to the Chinese people?
A. It means China no longer needs any other ports.
B. It means Sun Yat-sen's book is no longer important.
C. It means southwestern China will stop using the Xijiang River.
D. It means a century-old dream has finally come true through hard work and new ideas.
