I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school's community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.

My grandmother grew up in a world different from me. She experienced many things in her long life.
Though she never told stories, her stories were in the way she ate — she savored (品味) her food, cherished (珍惜) it. Often she would be the first to sit at the dinner table, and the last to leave. Food had been really scarce (缺乏) when she grew up.
Her stories were in the way she handed me lucky money. From a young age, my grandmother was brought up to understand the importance of hard work and the necessary of saving. Every Chinese New Year, I would be handed, or sent, a small red envelope that contained money, but never more than twenty dollars. When I was young , I didn’t understand why my grandmother gave me such a small amount of money. As I grew older, I realized that she wasn’t teaching me about money, but about tradition and hard work and family. The money was insignificant. I would probably spend it on any toy that I would lose soon after; it was the meaning behind her gift that mattered. It was her saying, “ I love you; I am your family and I want you to work hard as your family has before you.”
My grandmother’s stories were lessons. But they were never told in words. From the time that I was very young, up until she could barely remember my name, I remember her calling me “good girl”. Those two little words, in the course of my growing up, were a constant reminder that I was still so young, with still so far to go.
Now my grandmother is gone, but I see her every day. I see her in the women around me and in the mirror. She lives with me, inside me, and in the legacies(遗产)that I will create. And I know she would be proud.
8. The Author’s grandmother spent so much time eating at the table because ________.
A. she had no teeth B. she had nothing to do
C. she was preparing to clear the table D. she really wanted to enjoy the food
9. What did the author learn from the way her grandmother gave her lucky money?
A. Her grandmother didn’t have much money.
B. Her grandmother preferred boys to girls.
C. It was a shame to accept others’ money.
D. It was important for her to work hard.
10. What did the author realize hearing her grandmother call her “good girl” ?
A. She was really a good girl.
B. She needed to continually improve herself.
C. She should be proud of her manners and behaviors.
D. She was always a good girl in her grandmother’s eyes.
11. What can we know about the author’s grandmother after reading the passage?
A. She loved telling stories.
B. She had never worked in her life.
C. She set a great example for the author.
D. She was a mean woman with old-fashioned values.
D
Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音高).
One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music ''actually tunes our sensory system''. This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.
Mandarin(普通话)speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word ''mi'' in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.
The lead author of the study, Patrick C. M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.
12. When learning Chinese, a foreigner will find _____.
A. it difficult to learn music at the same time
B. it not difficult to learn music at the same time
C. it hard to master the tones required to speak and understand
D. it easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch
13. Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?
A. Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.
B. Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.
C. Because music training might help people with language study.
D. Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.
14. The underlined word ''intoned'' in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word ''_____''.
A. created B. spelled
C. seemed D. pronounced
15. What would be the best title of this passage?
A. Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English Speakers
B. Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study
C. Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning
D. Schools Need to Develop Music Programs

Jayce began noticing when he was in kindergarten that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands while he had one. Because of his young age, Jayce was encouraged that he was just like an angel with one wing folded to prepare for something.
It started when one boy laughed at him. From that day, little Jayce became sad. He returned home with questions. “Why am I different? Why me? Why?” He cried and asked his mother Lewis. Seeing Jayce was mad, the poor mother felt it a huge dagger (匕首) to her heart. What made her more sorrowful was that she didn’t know what to do at that point and how to give answers to her son’s questions which she could never find out herself. The white lie burst just like bubbles that day.
A few weeks later, Lewis turned on the TV and saw a news story where she was shocked to find out the answer. It was Trashaun, an eighth grader, who had a similar disability but led a brilliant life, that displayed positive energy from head to toe. The 14-year-old sunny boy performed his slam dunks (灌篮) on the TV, who had been a hit on the Internet. However, like Jayce, he had missed most of his left arm since his childhood! Lewis called her son Jayce in. The poor little boy got spellbound (着迷), watching dunks after dunks.
At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce. He saw Trashaun as a tough role model and began to be positive about life. Lewis was happy to see her son’s change. But little did she know that a relative had already contacted Trashaun, inviting him to have a meeting with Jayce to help rebuild Jayce’s confidence.

①根据第一段中“Jayce began noticing when he was in kindergarten that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands while he had one.(Jayce在幼儿园时就开始注意到自己和同学看起来不一样。他们有两只手,而他只有一只)”可知,Jayce开始觉得自己和同学不一样。所以此处应用difference的形容词形式different作表语,表示“不同的”。故填different。
②根据第一段中“Because of his young age, Jayce was encouraged that he was just like an angel with one wing folded to prepare for something.(由于年纪小,Jayce被鼓励说他就像一个折起一只翅膀准备做某事的天使)”可知,这个善意的谎言是为了鼓励他面对自己的不同。
③根据第二段中“It started when one boy laughed at him.(这一切始于一个男孩嘲笑他)”可知,一个男孩嘲笑Jayce的动作让他感到悲伤,并质疑自己的不同。
④根据第二段中“Seeing Jayce was mad, the poor mother felt it a huge dagger (匕首) to her heart. What made her more sorrowful was that she didn’t know what to do at that point and how to give answers to her son’s questions which she could never find out herself.(看到Jayce很生气,这位可怜的母亲感到心里像被一把巨大的匕首刺中。更让她难过的是,她不知道该怎么办,也不知道如何回答儿子的问题,而这些问题她自己也永远找不到答案)”可知,Jayce的母亲Lewis对如何回答儿子的问题感到悲伤和困惑。所以此处应用confuse的形容词形式confused作表语,意为“困惑的”,与形容词sorrowful并列。故填confused。
⑤根据第二段中“The white lie burst just like bubbles that day.(那天,这个善意的谎言像泡沫一样破灭了)”可知,那天,这个善意的谎言像泡沫一样破灭了。
⑥根据第三段中“A few weeks later, Lewis turned on the TV and saw a news story where she was shocked to find out the answer. It was Trashaun, an eighth grader, who had a similar disability but led a brilliant life(几周后,Lewis打开电视,看到一则新闻,她震惊地发现答案。是Trashaun,一个八年级的学生,他有类似的残疾,但过着精彩的生活)”可知,Lewis知道Jayce和Trashaun一样有残疾。所以此处应用名词disability作宾语,意为“残疾;缺陷”。故填disability。
⑦根据第三段中“The 14-year-old sunny boy performed his slam dunks (灌篮) on the TV, who had been a hit on the Internet.(这个14岁的阳光男孩在电视上表演了他的灌篮,他在网上引起了轰动)”可知,Trashaun因其惊人的灌篮而闻名。
⑧根据第四段中“At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce.(当时,观看Trashaun的表演似乎对Jayce来说只是一个鼓舞人心的时刻)”可知,观看Trashaun的表演对Jayce来说似乎只是一个鼓舞人心的时刻。
⑨根据第四段中“But little did she know that a relative had already contacted Trashaun(但她不知道,一个亲戚已经联系了Trashaun)”可知,Lewis不知道一个亲戚已经联系了Trashaun。
⑩根据第四段中“inviting him to have a meeting with Jayce to help rebuild Jayce’s confidence.(邀请他和Jayce见面,帮助重建Jayce的信心)”可知,与Trashaun的会面是为了重建Jayce的信心。
根据第一段中“Jayce began noticing when he was in kindergarten that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands while he had one.(Jayce在幼儿园时就开始注意到自己和同学看起来不一样。他们有两只手,而他只有一只)”可知,Jayce和幼儿园同学的不同之处在于Jayce只有一只手,而他的同学有两只手。故答案为:Jayce had only one hand while his classmates had two.
根据第三段中“A few weeks later, Lewis turned on the TV and saw a news story where she was shocked to find out the answer. It was Trashaun, an eighth grader, who had a similar disability but led a brilliant life(几周后,Lewis打开电视,看到一则新闻,她震惊地发现答案。是Trashaun,一个八年级的学生,他有类似的残疾,但过着精彩的生活)”和第四段中“At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce. He saw Trashaun as a tough role model and began to be positive about life.(当时,观看Trashaun的表演似乎对Jayce来说只是一个鼓舞人心的时刻。他把Trashaun看作一个坚强的榜样,开始对生活持积极态度)”可知,看到Trashaun的灌篮表演,并把他看作一个坚强的榜样,改变了Jayce对自己不同的态度。故答案为:Watching Trashaun perform his slam dunks and seeing him as a tough role model changed Jayce’s attitude to his difference.
We should be brave to face and overcome the difficulties and challenges in life.
