Parenthood is often described as life’s greatest gift — a journey of deep love and connection. Children are the light of your life, the ones who make everything worthwhile. But, like any long-term relationship, it has its challenging moments. Years ago, I wrote a column suggesting that what most mothers really want for Mother’s Day isn’t flowers or breakfast in bed — it’s an apology. A heartfelt acknowledgment of all the moments their children tested their patience.
Picture this: “March 2004, losing my temper on a ferry — I’m sorry. April 2004, screaming because you broke my cheese — I’m sorry. April 2004 again, screaming because the replacement cheese was also ‘wrong’ — I’m sorry.” Parents, of course, could admit their own mistakes, like accidentally ruining childhood myths about Snow White. It would be a way for everyone to start fresh as they entered adulthood.
While I never got those apologies, a recent experience brought me close to that feeling. Both my daughters have recently moved out and started their own independent lives. Watching them face the realities of adulthood has been unexpectedly satisfying. Every time they’re surprised by how difficult life can be, it feels like proof that my years of parenting paid off. In a darkly humorous way, it’s almost like the perfect parent would leave their kids so unprepared that — they wouldn’t last a day Thankfully, I didn’t aim for that kind of perfection — both my daughters are doing well, despite some struggles along the way.
Still, their comments about adult life are little victories for me. One daughter admitted she now understands why I insisted on carpets instead of concrete floors. She even sees the value of things she once laughed at, like curtains and electric blankets. Another revelation came when she discovered how expensive basic items like washing powder are. “Why is something so boring so costly?” she asked, shocked.
It’s not just the financial surprises. They’ve also come to appreciate the small comforts of home. One daughter admitted it’s nice to wake up to someone cooking breakfast. She used to wish I’d leave her alone for a weekend, but now she sees the warmth of having someone there.
I’m still waiting for the ultimate acknowledgment — when they become parents themselves and truly understand my efforts — but for now, these small realizations feel like a sweet reward.
4. According to the author, what do most mothers truly want for Mother’s Day?
A. Flowers and breakfast in bed.
B. A genuine expression of regret from their children.
C. A chance to reflect on their parenting achievements.
D. A discussion about childhood myths like Snow White.
5. What does the author find satisfying about her daughters moving out?
A. Their newfound freedom.
B. Their financial independence.
C. Finding them unwilling to leave home.
D. Seeing them handle the struggles of adult life.
6. What realization did one of the author’s daughters have about household items?
A. Concrete floors are better than carpets.
B. Washing powder is surprisingly expensive.
C. Electric blankets are unnecessary luxuries.
D. Curtains are outdated interior design elements.
7. Why does the author believe her daughters’ small realizations are rewarding?
A. They make her feel less alone. B. They justify her parenting choices.
C. They highlight her daughters’ maturity. D. They remind her of the warmth of family life.
B 5. D 6. B 7. B

根据第一段中“Years ago, I wrote a column suggesting that what most mothers really want for Mother’s Day isn’t flowers or breakfast in bed — it’s an apology. A heartfelt acknowledgment of all the moments their children tested their patience.(几年前,我写过一篇专栏,提出大多数母亲在母亲节真正想要的并不是鲜花或床上早餐 —— 而是一个道歉。一种发自内心的承认,承认那些孩子们一次次考验她们耐心的时刻)”可知,作者认为大多数妈妈在母亲节那天想要的是孩子发自内心的道歉,即表达他们的遗憾。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Both my daughters have recently moved out and started their own independent lives. Watching them face the realities of adulthood has been unexpectedly satisfying. Every time they’re surprised by how difficult life can be, it feels like proof that my years of parenting paid off. (我的两个女儿最近都搬了出去,开始了自己的独立生活。看着他们面对成年后的现实是一种出乎意料的满足。每次他们惊讶于生活的艰难,就好像证明了我多年的教育是有回报的)”可知,女儿们搬出去后,看着她们应对成年生活的艰难让作者感到满意。故选D。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Another revelation came when she discovered how expensive basic items like washing powder are. “Why is something so boring so costly?” she asked, shocked.(另一个启示是,她发现洗衣粉等基本用品是多么昂贵。“为什么这么无聊的东西这么贵?”她震惊地问道)”可知,作者的一个女儿意识到洗衣粉等居家用品贵得离谱。故选B。
【7题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“One daughter admitted she now understands why I insisted on carpets instead of concrete floors. She even sees the value of things she once laughed at, like curtains and electric blankets. Another revelation came when she discovered how expensive basic items like washing powder are. “Why is something so boring so costly?” she asked, shocked.(一个女儿承认,她现在明白我为什么坚持铺地毯而不是水泥地板了。她甚至看到了她曾经嘲笑过的东西的价值,比如窗帘和电热毯。另一个启示是,她发现洗衣粉等基本用品是多么昂贵。“为什么这么无聊的东西这么贵?”她震惊地问道)”和最后一段“I’m still waiting for the ultimate acknowledgment —when they become parents themselves and truly understand my efforts — but for now, these small realizations feel like a sweet reward.(我仍在等待那份终极的认可——当他们自己为人父母,才能真正理解我的付出——但就目前而言,这些小小的领悟已经像是一份甜蜜的回报)”推测,作者认为女儿们小小的领悟是回报,是因为它们证明了她为人父母的选择是对的。故选B。
C
Nature words like river, moss and blossom have appeared less frequently in books over the past years. This decline, according to a study by professor Miles Richardson from the University of Derby, mirrors a broader change he has traced through 220 years of records on urbanisation, the loss of wildlife in neighbourhoods, and parents no longer passing on engagement with nature to their children.
The computer modelling in the study also predicts an “extinction of experience”, with future generations continuing to lose an awareness of nature because it is not present in increasingly built-up neighbourhoods, while parents no longer pass on an “orientation(倾向)” towards the natural world. This is consistent with findings from other studies, which identify adult nature connectedness as the strongest predictor of whether a child will become close to nature.
Richardson said that when he tested policy and urban environmental changes in the model he was surprised at the scale of the changes required to restore the connection to nature. Increasing biodiverse green spaces in a city by 30% might look like significant positive progress for wildlife and people but Richardson said his study suggests a city might need to be 10 times greener to turn around declines in nature connection.
Efforts to simply encourage adults to engage with nature are often insufficient for lasting change. More effective are measures that build nature connection from an early age, such as forest schools for young children. Research indicates that government initiatives reshaping early education and urban design must be consistently applied over the next 25 years. Once established, this connection can become self-sustaining.
Richardson said the scale of societal change required might not be as challenging as it appeared. A study on people in Sheffield found that they spent just 4 minutes and 36 seconds on average in natural spaces each day. “Increase that by ten, and people are spending 40 minutes outside every day — that may be enough,” he said. “The key is to make these gains last across generations,” he added.
8. What change has Richardson traced in his study?
A. Nature words have disappeared from books. B. People have less direct contact with nature.
C. Urbanisation has damaged wildlife habitats. D. Parents spend more time outdoors with kids.
9. What might cause future generations to have “extinction of experience” in the model?
A. They are raised away from nature. B. They can’t adapt to changes in nature.
C. High-rise buildings fill neighbourhoods. D. Schools offer few nature science lessons.
10. What is a most effective solution to the issue according to the text?
A. Advancing long-term policies. B. Launching eco-friendly campaigns.
C. Focusing on raising adults’ awareness. D. Enlarging green space in certain areas.
11. Richardson mentioned the study on people in Sheffield to show ________.
A. nature contact varies from city to city B. people’s living habits are hard to change
C. a new way to measure nature time is needed D. small efforts help improve contact with nature
B 9. A 10. A 11. D
根据文章第一段内容“This decline, according to a study by professor Miles Richardson from the University of Derby, mirrors a broader change he has traced through 220 years of records on urbanisation, the loss of wildlife in neighbourhoods, and parents no longer passing on engagement with nature to their children.(据德比大学的Miles Richardson教授的一项研究显示,这种下降趋势反映了他所追踪到的更为广泛的变革:220年来的城市化记录、社区内野生动物的减少,以及父母不再将与自然的接触方式传递给子女的现象。)”
根据文章第二段内容“The computer modelling in the study also predicts an ‘extinction of experience’, with future generations continuing to lose an awareness of nature because it is not present in increasingly built-up neighbourhoods, while parents no longer pass on an ‘orientation’ towards the natural world.(该研究中的计算机模型还预测会出现“体验灭绝”现象,未来的世代将会逐渐失去对自然界的认知,因为自然环境已不再存在于日益密集的居民区之中,而父母们也不再向孩子们传递对自然世界的“认知导向”。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第四段内容“More effective are measures that build nature connection from an early age, such as forest schools for young children. Research indicates that government initiatives reshaping early education and urban design must be consistently applied over the next 25 years. Once established, this connection can become self-sustaining.(更为有效的是那些能在孩子幼年时期就建立与自然联系的措施,比如为幼儿设立的森林学校。研究表明,政府针对早期教育和城市规划的改革举措必须在未来 25 年内持续推行。一旦这种联系得以确立,它就能实现自我维持。)”可知,更有效的方式是从小培养亲近自然的连接,政府调整早期教育和城市设计的举措,必须在未来25年持续推行,即长期政策才是有效的解决方案。故选A项。
根据文章末尾段内容“A study on people in Sheffield found that they spent just 4 minutes and 36 seconds on average in natural spaces each day. ‘Increase that by ten, and people are spending 40 minutes outside every day — that may be enough,’ he said.(一项针对谢菲尔德市民的研究发现,他们平均每天在自然环境中停留的时间仅为4分36秒。“将这个时间增加 10 倍,人们每天就能在户外度过 40 分钟 —— 这或许已经足够了。”)”提及谢菲尔德市民每天只在自然环境中停留4分36秒,而只需增加十倍到四十分钟就够了,即,不用巨大改变,小努力就能提升亲近自然的时间。故选D项。
D
A team of Cambridge psychologists conducted an experiment to compare the cognitive (认知的) effects of merely seeing art with actively judging how beautiful it is.
In the study, 187 people were invited to visit Kettle’s Yard gallery during an exhibition of handmade clay objects. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: the “beauty” group was asked to actively consider and then rate the beauty of each object they viewed, while the control group just matched a line drawing of the object with the artwork itself. All participants were then tested on how they process information, and whether it’s in a more practical or abstract way.
Across all participants, those in the beauty group scored almost 14% higher on average than the control group in abstract thinking. While they were told the study was about cognitive processes, participants were asked about interests, with around half saying they had an artistic hobby. Among those, the effect was greater: those with an artistic hobby in the beauty group scored over 25% higher on average for abstract thinking than those with an artistic hobby in the control group.
Emotional states of participants were also measured by asking about their feelings while completing the gallery task. Across all participants, those in the beauty group reported an average of 23% higher levels of “transformative and self-transcendent feelings” — such as feeling moved, enlightened and inspired — than the control group. Importantly, however, the beauty group did not report feeling any happier than the control group, suggesting that it was the engagement with beauty that influenced abstract thinking, rather than any overall positivity from the experience.
“We usually think in very concrete terms when doing something on a screen,” said Simone Schnall, senior author of the study. “It’s becoming much rarer to zone out and just let the mind wander, but that’s when we think in ways that broaden our minds. Admiring the beauty of art may be the ideal way to initiate the abstract cognitive processes.”
12. What was the beauty group asked to do with the clay objects?
A. Draw their outlines. B. Give each piece a rating.
C. Compare their prices. D. Make a copy of each piece.
13. Which participants got the highest score on average in the test?
A. Beauty group, with an artistic hobby. B. Beauty group, without an artistic hobby.
C. Control group, with an artistic hobby. D. Control group, without an artistic hobby.
14. Why were the participants’ emotional states measured?
A. To discover their attitudes towards art.
B. To identify their specific thinking patterns.
C. To examine the difficulty of the tasks.
D. To determine factors behind the test results.
15. What is the major finding of the study regarding the appreciation of art?
A. It enhances emotional ties. B. It needs critical thinking skills.
C. It creates positive feelings. D. It encourages abstract thinking.
B 13. A 14. D 15. D
根据第二段中的“Participants were randomly divided into two groups: the “beauty” group was asked to actively consider and then rate the beauty of each object they viewed, while the control group just matched a line drawing of the object with the artwork itself.(参与者被随机分成两组:“美感组”被要求主动思考,然后为他们所观看的每一件物品的美感打分,而对照组只是把物品的线条图和这件艺术品实物进行配对。)”
根据第三段中的“Among those, the effect was greater: those with an artistic hobby in the beauty group scored over 25% higher on average for abstract thinking than those with an artistic hobby in the control group.(在那些人当中,效果更加显著:美感组中有艺术爱好的受试者,其抽象思维平均分比对照组中有艺术爱好的受试者高出25%以上。)”以及第四段中的“Across all participants, those in the beauty group reported an average of 23% higher levels of “transformative and self-transcendent feelings” — such as feeling moved, enlightened and inspired — than the control group.(在所有受试者中,审美组受试者所报告的 “蜕变感与自我超越感”(诸如感动、豁然开朗、备受鼓舞这类情绪)平均水平,比对照组高出23%。)”
根据第四段中的“Emotional states of participants were also measured by asking about their feelings while completing the gallery task. Across all participants, those in the beauty group reported an average of 23% higher levels of “transformative and self-transcendent feelings” — such as feeling moved, enlightened and inspired — than the control group. Importantly, however, the beauty group did not report feeling any happier than the control group, suggesting that it was the engagement with beauty that influenced abstract thinking, rather than any overall positivity from the experience.(研究人员还通过询问受试者在参观美术馆任务过程中的内心感受,测评了他们的情绪状态。
根据第一段的“A team of Cambridge psychologists conducted an experiment to compare the cognitive ( 认知的 ) effects of merely seeing art with actively judging how beautiful it is.(剑桥大学的一组心理学家进行了一项实验,旨在比较仅仅观看艺术作品与主动评判其美感所产生的认知效应。)”;第三段中的“Across all participants, those in the beauty group scored almost 14% higher on average than the control group in abstract thinking.(在所有参与者中,美感组的抽象思维平均分比对照组高出近 14%。)”以及第五段中的“Admiring the beauty of art may be the ideal way to initiate the abstract cognitive processes.(欣赏艺术之美或许是启动抽象认知过程的理想途径。)”

In everyday communication, we exchange not only logical information but also emotions, attitudes and inner states. Since human beings are emotional creatures, our decisions, whether significant or trivial, are often driven more by emotions than by pure reason. Therefore, to express strong emotions clearly, we tend to use words like very, so and truly in daily language. ____16____
Verbal intensifiers (强化词) are special function words that enhance the meaning, especially the emotional meaning of the words they are attached to. ____17____ According to Buzarov (1998), intensification is a stable and vital feature of informal language. Words such as awfully, deeply, tremendously, and truly help speakers strengthen emotional impact and influence listeners’ psychological perception.
____18____ In English, we often say “I am deeply grateful” or “He is dead tired.” Other languages also have similar words: очень in Russian, sehr in German, très in French. Some new intensifiers are even created by combining words, like fantabulous from fantastic and fabulous.
To make the most of intensifiers, we should use them with a clear purpose. Do not use them mindlessly. ____19____ Connect them with your genuine attitude and focus on conveying precise emotions. This way, appropriate use of intensifiers will make our words more powerful and sincere.
Intensifiers, like any other linguistic tool, work best in the right context. ____20____ However, overusing them without necessity will only weaken their expressive effect and make our words sound empty. Mastering them wisely helps us become more proficient and persuasive communicators.
A. Proper use is a smart linguistic choice.
B. These function words have great expressive value.
C. You’d better use them to express real ideas and emotions.
D. Using intensifiers at will influences emotional expression.
E. Intensifiers are used to simplify the meaning of other words.
F. This is why verbal intensifiers have emerged in languages worldwide.
G. They are commonly employed across languages and take on diverse forms.
F 17. B 18. G 19. C 20. A

How to Avoid Being Replaced by AI
Developing at a rapid pace, AI is transforming the world by performing a wide range of tasks, which causes concerns among those who fear potential job displacement.
As students, we should focus on creativity and imagination. Indeed, AI excels in logical tasks, yet it often falls short in critical thinking. Developing soft skills such as empathy and leadership is also crucial, which sets us apart from AI and makes us indispensable in the workforce. 第二节
It was a sunny morning in Eastern Australia. The sky was blue, and the sea looked calm and clear. A group of tourists, including a 12-year-old Japanese boy named Hiro and 57-year-old Brian Reeves, got on a boat for a trip. Hiro was very excited — this was his first time to visit Australia’s coast, and he brought a small waterproof camera to take photos of colorful fish under the water.
After sightseeing for two hours, the captain stopped the boat. “The water is safe here — you can swim for a while!” he said. Many tourists jumped in, and Hiro quickly followed. He swam a little too far from the boat, focusing on his camera. He dived down gently, trying to take a photo of a small orange fish. He was so busy that he didn’t notice the time passing.
Only a few minutes later, the captain suddenly shouted loudly. “Shark! Get back to the boat now!” He pointed to a dark shape moving fast in the water — it was a Great White Shark, about seven meters long. The swimmers heard the shout and swam back quickly. But Hiro was still under the water, taking photos, and he didn’t hear anything.
When Hiro came up for air, he froze. The shark’s dark fin (鳍) cut through the water just meters away, circling him slowly. Its huge mouth opened wide, showing rows of sharp teeth. Hiro’s eyes grew big — he could even see the shark’s rough skin shining in the sun. It inched closer, and the water around him felt colder.
Hiro threw away the camera in panic and started screaming. His hands shook so hard that he could barely move his arms. He tried to kick towards the boat, but his legs felt heavy. Tears mixed with seawater on his face. On the boat, his parents, who now wished they had jumped in with Hiro, cried and banged(击打)the side, but no one could reach him in time. Hiro thought he would never see his family again.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Just then, Brian stepped in without hesitation. He tore off his shirt and shoes, and jumped into the sea. He splashed the water hard with his hands and shouted as loud as he could. The shark turned its head — it forgot about Hiro and swam towards Brian. Hiro’s legs stopped shaking. He swam fast to the boat, where his parents pulled him up tightly. The tourists acted fast too. They held out a rope to Brian. Just as the shark got closer, Brian grabbed the rope and was pulled onto the boat.
Hiro’s parents walked over to Brian with grateful tears in their eyes. “Thank you! You saved our son’s life!” they said, bowing deeply. Brian smiled and told them he was happy to see Hiro safe and sound. The tourists clapped loudly — they all called Brian a hero. Someone gave him a towel to dry off, and another handed him a cup of water. Brian drank it slowly, feeling the warmth spread through his body. He was tired, but satisfied with himself because he acted on his belief that helping others can make the world a safer, warmer place.
