A red carpet day! Leonard-A-Zone celebrated its 120th anniversary on November 1, 2023. Around 10,000 previous graduates came to the event. Wangxin, the boss of Meituan Group was also present. There were tours of the old school buildings (such as Deng Zihui Building, the Three Gates — Gate of Endeavor, Gate of Wisdom and Gate of Success), the new buildings (such as Xinhuadu Building and Tengfei Building) and a picnic at Zhongshan Park. Several former teachers were on hand to tell stories about the old days. Hugh Johnson, a teacher of English for over forty years, was wheeled to the park.
Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans (嘟囔声) when Mr. Hugh was about to speak. Many started looking through their phones and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old man who had few kind words for his students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined.
Then Mr. Hugh started to speak: “I can’t tell you how pleased I am to be here. I haven’t seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I haven’t appeared in person, I have attended your university graduations, weddings and even the births of your children, in my imagination.”
Mr. Hugh paused and started crying a bit. Then he continued: “It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. So many of you have made it to Project 211 or even 985 Universities. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in your chosen path. There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart.”
There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds and then someone started clapping. The clapping turned into cheering, then into a deafening roar. Truck drivers, models, lawyers, bankers and even provincial or state leaders were rubbing their eyes or crying openly with no shame all because of the words from a long forgotten English teacher from their hometown.

Liz Murray’s life began in the Bronx in1980 in a pretty typical way — she had two parents and a sister, and she had a home to live in with them. But that life quickly turned bad.
While the parents thoughtlessly spent almost every penny, Liz and her sister almost starved to death.
Liz started her education in 1985. She lived in a dirty home and was self-conscious of the unpleasant smell that she gave off from her unwashed body and dirty clothing. The shame caused her to choose not to attend school and stay home.
When Liz was 11, her mother suffered a serious illness. The following year, Liz’s parents separated. Her sister was with her mother, while Liz decided to stay with her father. At age 13, Child Welfare took Liz into care. Eventually, Liz was returned to her mother. Liz began attending junior high school and became friends with her classmates.
In 1996, Liz’s mother passed away, and after that she became homeless. She suddenly realized, “If I could have a family and a home one night and all of them were gone the next that means that life has the ability to change. That means that just as change happens to me so I can cause change in my life.” This caused Liz to make her first real promise — to high school.
She heard about alternative (另类的) high schools and went to as many school interviews as she could. After repeated rejections, Liz met Perry Weiner, the head of Humanities Preparatory Academy. Perry offered her admission to the school, where she finished a four-year high school program in just two years while still living on the streets. From pumping gas at gas stations, to working as a waitress, to walking dogs, she did just about anything to earn money so that she could survive and pay for her study.
Perry later encouraged her to apply to Harvard University, telling her although it was a goal that seemed out of reach, it was not impossible, Liz took his advice. Not only did she graduate at the top of her class, but she also won a scholarship. Her success didn’t stop there. All her hard work paid off when she was accepted by Harvard. Now Liz’s an inspirational speaker.
8. What can we learn about Liz?
A. She was born into a broken family.
B. She received little care from her parents.
C. She has had no fixed place to live since birth.
D. She had to go to a child welfare organization at 11.
9. Why was Liz unwilling to go to school when she was a pupil?
A. She didn’t want to be laughed at. B. She had to care for her sick mother.
C. She had to work to support the family. D. She wanted to save money for the family.
10. What made Liz so determined to attend high school?
A. The death of her mother. B. The influence of her friend.
C. The support of her father and sister. D. The encouragement of Perry Weiner.
11. What does Liz’s story tell us?
A. Love can make a difference. B. Nothing is easy at the top level.
C. It always seems impossible until it’s done. D. Gratitude is the fastest shortcut to happiness.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. A 11. C
由第二段“While the parents thoughtlessly spent almost every penny, Liz and her sister almost starved to death. (当父母轻率地花掉几乎每一分钱时,Liz和她的妹妹几乎要饿死了)”和第三段中“She lived in a dirty home and was self-conscious of the unpleasant smell that she gave off from her unwashed body and dirty clothing. (她住在一个肮脏的家里,对自己未洗的身体和脏衣服散发出的难闻气味很敏感)”可知,结合Liz父母的所作所为和她脏兮兮的状况,Liz几乎没有得到父母的照顾。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。由第三段中“She lived in a dirty home and was self-conscious of the unpleasant smell that she gave off from her unwashed body and dirty clothing. The shame caused her to choose not to attend school and stay home. (她住在一个肮脏的家里,对自己未洗的身体和脏衣服散发出的难闻气味很敏感。羞愧使她选择不上学,呆在家里)”可知,Liz因为自己脏兮兮而感到羞愧,应该是害怕被嘲笑,小时候才不愿意上学。故选A项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。由第五段中“In 1996, Liz’s mother passed away, and after that she became homeless. (1996年,Liz的母亲去世,之后她无家可归)”和“This caused Liz to make her first real promise — to high school. (这让Liz做出了第一个真正的承诺——上高中)”可知,Liz母亲的去世让她下定决心要上高中。故选A项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。由最后一段中“Perry later encouraged her to apply to Harvard University, telling her although it was a goal that seemed out of reach, it was not impossible, Liz took his advice. Not only did she graduate at the top of her class, but she also won a scholarship. Her success didn’t stop there. All her hard work paid off when she was accepted by Harvard. Now Liz’s an inspirational speaker.
D
When driving, Clara-Marina Martinez makes a note of any unusual behaviour she sees on the road. She then feeds these into machine learning algorithms (算法), a form of AI, which she is helping develop for Porsche Engineering.
Those algorithms are intended to produce a system reliable enough for a car to drive itself. Such a fully autonomous car known in the industry as Level 5, should be able to complete an entire journey without any intervention from the driver, and deal with all situations on the road. But this is proving hard to achieve, and many attempts to do so are being abandoned. Last year, for instance, Uber sold off its unit developing self-driving cars.
Autonomous vehicles are said to be not just convenient but potentially safer. However, just as people take time to learn how to drive safely, so do machines. And machines are not quick learners. The RAND Corporation calculates that to develop a system 20% safer than a human driver, 100 self-driving cars would have to operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Carmakers such as Porsche therefore speed up the development process using simulators (模拟器). These teach software about dangers rarely encountered in reality. Dr Martinez and her colleagues employ “game engines” to do this. These are used to create virtual worlds through which the software can drive. Objects in these virtual worlds are assigned their physical characteristics (ie, buildings are hard. people are soft) so that the sensors in vehicles respond in the appropriate way. Once the software has been trained, it is tested in real autonomous vehicles by re-creating those situations on a test track.
How quickly all this will translate into reality remains to be seen. Both regulators and customers will need to overcome the doubt that a software drive really can be safer than a human being.
From Porsche’s point of view, though, there is another question. Given that much of the reason for owning a sports car is for owners to show off their driving skills, just how big a market will there be for a version where software takes those bragging rights (炫耀的权利) away?
12. What does Clara-Marina Martinez intend to do?
A. Market Porsche cars. B. Learn to be a responsible driver.
C. Enjoy riding in a self-driving car. D. Improve the AI technology.
13. What is the problem with self-driving cars?
A. They learn as slowly as human beings. B. They have to be monitored by human drivers.
C. They need a long time to reach a certain safety level. D. They can operate for a very short period of time.
14. What are Dr Martinez and her colleagues doing?
A. Enabling software to identify road dangers. B. Fixing sensors in autonomous vehicles.
C. Re-creating road situations on a test track. D. Separating the real world from the virtual world.
15. What worries Porsche according to the last paragraph?
A. The reliability of car software. B. The future of its sports car market.
C. The quality of self-driving cars. D. The driving skills of human beings.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. B

I’m sorry to know that you have become addicted to computer games recently. I feel quite worried about you.

Therefore, I’d like to recommend that you take up a new hobby such as running or playing football.
4. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. Most people had little interest in the celebration.
B. Many graduates disliked Mr. Hugh’s ways of teaching.
C. Some graduates were too busy to listen to Hugh’s speech.
D. Some people got tired from the reunion activities.

A. kept track of his students’ progress B. gave his students advice on their careers
C. attended his students’ university graduations D. went to his students’ wedding ceremonies
6. What was Mr. Hugh’s belief in teaching teenagers?
A. Students’ respect is the best reward for teachers.
B. Pressure on students from teachers should be reduced.
C. Hard-pushed students are more likely to succeed.
D. Teachers’ knowledge is the key to students’ achievements.
7. Which of the following can best describe Mr. Hugh?
