When I first walked through the gates of Riverside High School last September, I felt as if I had entered a new world. Everything was bigger and busier than my old school. I was a shy boy, and I worried that I would never make any friends.
On the first morning, I got lost while looking for my classroom. The building was like a maze (迷宫). Just when I was about to give up, a tall girl with a warm smile came up to me. "You look lost. Are you new here?" she asked. Her name was Anna, and she was a Grade 11 student. She not only showed me the way to my classroom but also introduced me to her friends.
A week later, Anna invited me to join the school’s English club. At first, I hesitated because I was afraid of speaking in public. But Anna encouraged me, saying, "Everyone is nervous at the beginning. Just give it a try." So I went to the club meeting. To my surprise, the members were all friendly. We played games, talked about our favourite books and practised English together.
Three months have passed, and I can hardly believe how much I have changed. I have made many good friends and even given a speech in front of the whole club. Now I understand that high school is not as frightening as I thought — it is full of new chances. The most important lesson I have learned is that a kind smile can open the door to a whole new life.
24. How did the author feel when he first arrived at Riverside High School?
A. Excited and proud. B. Nervous and worried. C. Bored and tired. D. Angry and upset.
25. What did Anna do for the author on the first morning?
A. She gave him a book. B. She showed him to his classroom. C. She bought him lunch. D. She helped him with his homework.
26. Why did the author hesitate to join the English club?
A. He didn’t like English. B. He had no free time. C. He was afraid of speaking in public. D. He thought it was boring.
27. What is the main lesson the author learned?
A. High school is very difficult. B. It is hard to make friends. C. A kind smile can open a new life. D. English is the most important subject.
C
Many teenagers today do not get enough sleep. According to a recent survey, more than half of high school students sleep less than seven hours on school nights, while doctors suggest that teenagers need about nine hours of sleep every night.
Why is sleep so important for teenagers? First, sleep helps the brain to remember what we have learned during the day. When we sleep, our brain sorts out information and stores it in our memory. A student who sleeps well can think more clearly and do better in exams. Second, enough sleep keeps us healthy. Lack of sleep can lead to problems such as headaches, poor eyesight and even depression (抑郁). Third, sleep helps control our feelings. Teenagers who sleep too little often get angry easily and have trouble getting along with others.
So why do so many teenagers stay up late? Some spend hours on their phones or computers. Others have too much homework. Still others simply do not realize how important sleep is.
Experts give some advice. First, try to go to bed at the same time every night, even on weekends. Second, put away your phone at least an hour before you go to bed. Third, avoid coffee or tea in the evening. Finally, make sure your bedroom is dark and quiet.
Getting enough sleep is not lazy — it is one of the best ways to take care of yourself. If you want to do well in school and feel happy, start by getting a good night’s sleep.
28. How many hours of sleep do doctors suggest teenagers need?
A. About five. B. About seven. C. About nine. D. About eleven.
29. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The reasons why teenagers lack sleep. B. The importance of sleep for teenagers. C. The advice experts give. D. The problems of using phones.
30. What can lack of sleep lead to according to the passage?
A. Better memory. B. Poor eyesight. C. More friends. D. Higher grades.
31. Which of the following is NOT the experts’ advice?
A. Go to bed at the same time. B. Put away your phone. C. Drink coffee in the evening. D. Keep your bedroom dark and quiet.
D
Travel is one of the best ways to learn about the world. When we travel, we leave our familiar surroundings and step into a new environment. This experience can teach us more than any textbook.
First, travel opens our eyes. Reading about the Great Wall in a book is one thing; standing on it and seeing how far it stretches is quite another. When we see different landscapes, buildings and customs with our own eyes, our understanding of the world becomes deeper and more real.
Second, travel helps us grow as people. Away from home, we have to solve problems by ourselves — finding the way, ordering food and dealing with unexpected situations. These experiences make us more independent and confident. Many students say that after their first trip alone, they feel they have grown up a lot.
Third, travel brings people closer. Sharing a long journey with family or friends creates memories that last a lifetime. We laugh together, help each other and discover new things about one another.
Of course, travelling is not always easy. Long journeys can be tiring, and things do not always go as planned. But it is often these very difficulties that make a trip unforgettable.
So the next time you have a chance to travel, do not hesitate. Pack your bag, set off, and let the world be your teacher.
32. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Travel is tiring and expensive. B. Travel is a great way to learn and grow. C. Students should travel alone. D. Textbooks are better than travel.
33. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Seeing things for ourselves deepens our understanding. B. The Great Wall is the best place to visit. C. Books are not useful at all. D. We should travel far away.
34. How does travel help us grow according to the passage?
A. By making us rich. B. By making us more independent and confident. C. By giving us more homework. D. By helping us sleep better.
35. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Stay at home. B. Avoid difficulties. C. Take the chance to travel. D. Plan everything carefully.

Dear Wang Ming,
I’m sorry to hear that you are having a hard time in your new school. Here are some tips that may help you.
First, try to make new friends. Joining a club is a good way to meet people who share your interests. Besides, make a study plan and finish your tasks step by step, which will reduce your pressure. Finally, take some exercise or talk with your parents when you feel down.
I’m sure you will get used to senior high school life soon. Keep trying, and I’ll always be here for you!
Yours,
Li Hua
