Delivery (递送) has a long history in China. In ancient times, delivering things quickly was never easy. People spent much time on the road and often faced terrible weather.
In the early Shang Dynasty, there were no post offices or bicycles. Messengers travelled on foot for days to deliver the king’s messages. They even had to carry food and water for their long journey.
As time went by, delivery improved greatly during the Tang Dynasty. People rode horses to send things. This saved a lot of time. Some also used kites or pigeons (鸽子) to deliver letters. Pigeons could fly long distances and send messages correctly. These new ways made communication much easier.
After that, during the Qing Dynasty, a special service called “biaoju” appeared. Skilled guards (护卫) helped send letters and kept people and their valuable things safe on dangerous roads. They were brave and tried their best to complete each task.
Nowadays, delivery services are everywhere. Online shopping keeps countless delivery workers busy. They ride motorbikes to bring goods to our doors on time, rain or shine. In recent times, many robots and drones (无人机) deliver packages in cities and villages.

[In a courtroom (法庭) in Venice. Antonio stands silently. Shylock holds a written agreement. Bassanio looks worried.]
Shylock: The agreement is clear. Antonio borrowed money from me. If he could not pay it back on time, I could take one pound of his flesh (肉).
Bassanio: I will pay you twice the money. No, I will pay you three times! Please let him go.
Shylock: I do not want your money. I want what the paper gives me. I want justice (正义)!
Portia: [calmly] The law does allow the agreement. But before you ask for justice, think about mercy (仁慈). Mercy is not forced. It falls quietly, like gentle rain. It blesses (保佑) both the person who gives it and the person who receives it.
Shylock: I ask for the law.
Portia: Then you shall have the law. You may take one pound of flesh from Antonio. But listen carefully: the agreement says “flesh”. It does not say “blood”. If you spill (溢出) one drop of blood, you will break the law.
[Shylock suddenly stops and looks up in surprise.]
Portia: Also, you must take exactly one pound, no more and no less. If the weight is wrong, even by a little, you will be punished.
Shylock: Then give me the money and let me leave.
Portia: You refused mercy when it was offered. Now you must face the same law you asked for.
[The courtroom becomes silent.]
Narrator: Portia wins not by shouting but by reading the words more carefully than anyone else. The scene reminds us that law without mercy can become cold, but mercy without rules may become unfair. True wisdom needs both.

Engineers at MIT have created a flying robot that can also go underwater. The design is inspired by birds like puffins (海鹦), which can fly through the air and also dive into the sea.
Turning this idea into a working robot was a challenge that took two years to solve. One of the biggest challenges was dealing with the difference in density (密度差) between water and air. Many birds simply fold their wings when they go underwater. But the engineers wanted their robot’s wings to work well in both environments. Raphael Zufferey, who led the project, thought the idea seemed unlikely at first. But he and his team worked patiently. Then, through a lot of small experiments, they slowly developed their own swimming-flying robot.
In the air, the wings flap (拍打) five or six times a second, allowing the robot to fly. Underwater, the same wings help it swim. The robot also has a special tail that can help it change its position. Weighing less than 300g, the robot is very light. To keep it that way, the engineers chose not to cover its body. Instead, they waterproofed (使防水) each piece that was inside it. Surprisingly, although the engineers studied real birds, they didn’t copy everything. For example, their robot has no legs. So it uses its wings to push off from the water and take to the air. Once the robot leaves the water, its wings have to flap even faster.
The engineers have tested the robot in Lake Geneva in Switzerland. They are excited about the robot’s possible uses for studying underwater environments. Dr. Zufferey imagines a future where a scientist carries the robot in a backpack, flies it to a faraway area, and sends it underwater to collect data.
56. What’s the difficulty in making the flying robot?
A. To find enough puffins for research.
B. To make robots work well both in water and air.
C. To let robots fold their wings when going underwater.
D. To change the difference in density between water and air.
57. How do the engineers keep the robot light and waterproof?
A. They cover the whole robot with special heavy materials.
B. They make its special tail work as its main waterproof part.
C. They fold its wings tightly when the robot stays under water.
D. They waterproof every inside part instead of covering its body.
58. Which of the following is TRUE according to paragraph 3?
A. The robot’s wings can only work underwater.
B. The robot’s wings flap faster after it gets out of water.
C. The robot is very heavy and its weight is about 300 kg.
D. The robot uses legs to push off the water to fly into the air.
59. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Scientists have stopped further testing the robot.
B. The robot has been widely used in different areas.
C. Scientists mainly use the robot for carrying things.
D. The robot will help study underwater environments.

While AI brings great and non-stop convenience to people’s lives, what makes human beings special? A Chinese teacher collected 54 answers from her students with a simple classroom question: “Use one single word to show you are not AI. Which word will you pick?” The following are three of their answers.
Luna: My father suffered from illness for several weeks. During that hard time, fear and worries filled my mind now and then. Yet I still held his hand and kept believing that tomorrow might be better. Experiences like this make me understand: AI can offer answers to almost everything, but the hope I felt during that time is something only humans can truly experience.
Walter: I used to think my schoolmates were much cleverer than me. I remember the slow and painful progress. But those hard times helped me accept my weaknesses and pushed me to keep trying. AI can finish tasks at once. But, it can never sense the difficulty, happiness, disappointment (失望) or quiet pride that come from getting over trouble.
Tina: On my way home after school, I often stop to enjoy sunsets, and watch homeless cats. I still remember the nervousness before test scores came out, and the feeling of being excited and worried when waiting for the school sports meeting. AI can have all the data on earth but not those real moments of life. The different feelings deep inside my heart remind me how wonderful it is to be human.
Soon this special lesson spread (传播) widely online. Lots of thoughtful answers poured in. All these answers show the clear differences between humans and AI.

There are different methods to think and deal with troubles. Most people are used to direct thinking. For example, when flower-pot water cannot flow away, they will pour out the extra (多余的) water. Yet they can also make small holes at the bottom of the pot. This way is known as reverse (逆向的) thinking. It asks people to look at matters from the opposite (相反的) side. It works well when direct thinking cannot offer good answers.
However, some people doubt it. They warn that it may produce terrible influences. For example, digging holes directly on a flower-pot is easy, but it may break the whole pot. And because of this, the pot will become less valuable. Besides, depending too much on reverse thinking may lead to careless planning.
So how to develop reverse thinking? First, discuss the question in an opposite way like “How can I make my speech terrible?”. Second, offer possible answers and choose at least two. That can give you lots of possibilities. For example, prepare nothing for it, speak too fast, or pay no attention to listeners. Third, think about the most important parts — preparing nothing and speaking too fast. Fourth, go back to your problem and reverse your solutions. I should make full preparations for my speech, slow down my speed, and care about my listeners’ feelings.
All in all, reverse thinking is a helpful skill. Although it is not perfect, it still improves our ability to work out difficulties and encourages us to think in creative ways.
Most people deal with troubles with direct thinking, but 89. ________. It means looking at matters from the opposite side.
