This is such a small thing but it meant so much to a boy like me. This happened when I was around 14 and in a really bad situation in my life—teenage hormones (荷尔蒙) mixed with a bad home life, sadness, anxiety and not having close friends left me quite lonely.
We had woodworking classes on Thursdays then. I put a lot of time and hard work into our project. Once it was done, we could bring it home.
Usually I would feel quite uncomfortable with others seeing what I had put work into, so I would hide it in my backpack, but this time our project was too big, so I had to carry it by hand. I was anxious someone would see it, so I tried my best to hide it with my body. But when I was putting on my jacket, I heard another student behind me talking to her friend about how cool my work was. She sounded truly impressed, and that was the first time I had felt seen in a positive way.
I felt proud in a way I’d never felt before and it raised my self-confidence. I decided not to hide my project and I just felt so good about myself. Ever since then I’ve never had problems showing people things I’ve created. It didn’t clear away my anxiety but it made me feel good, like I was worth something, and it still brings a smile to my face to this day.
I doubt that girl knew how much it meant to me. I don’t even think she knew I heard it, but her simply telling her friend that my project was cool helped me so much during my teenage years.
Never underestimate (低估) the power of a simple, kind word.

C. Careless and impolite. D. Curious and warm-hearted.
6. How did the girl’s words make a difference to the writer?
A. Helped him make more friends. B. removed his anxiety completely.
C. Made him love woodworking more. D. Improved his confidence in creation.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Youth Sadness, My Old Days B. Teen Loneliness, Big Trouble
C. Tiny Kindness Deep Influence D. Natural Shyness, My Past Self
C
Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time (屏幕设备使用时间) after school, including how much time they spent swiping their mobile phone, watching TV, Netflix, or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programs. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级) .
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
8. What were the students asked to do after they reported time spent on after-school activities?
A. Talk about their lifestyles. B. Introduce their after-school activities.
C. Report their mental states on a scale. D. Answer questions about screen time use.
9. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. Higher levels of satisfaction fills their hearts.
B. They take more active part in after-school activities.
C. They have lower levels of anxiety.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
10. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
11. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
B. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
D
In today’s digital world, scrolling through phones before bed is as common as brushing teeth for many people. You might think it’s just a harmless way to relax, but new research shows this everyday habit could lead to serious long-term health problems.
A 2024 survey by China’s CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) found that 78.6% of Chinese adults use electronic devices (like phones or tablets) before sleep. Even 46.3% of people over 55 have this habit. Data also points out that some groups are more likely to do so: people aged 18 — 28, office workers who often work overtime, and older adults who use social media to keep in touch with family. Besides, those who stay up late, struggle to fall asleep, or rely on phones for fun are also more likely to use phones before bed.
The health risks of using phones before bed are clear and affect many areas. A 2023 study by the WHO (World Health Organization) showed that people who use phones for just 30 minutes before bed have a 127% higher risk of insomnia (失眠) than those who avoid screens one hour earlier. A Norwegian survey of 45,000 young people further proved that each extra hour of night-time phone use increases the risk of insomnia by 59% and cuts sleep time by 24 minutes.
Beyond poor sleep, there are more health risks. A 2023 study by Peking Union Medical College revealed that adults over 55 who use phones before bed scored 38.7% lower in memory tests — this is like their thinking ability aging 7 to 10 years. A 2024 study in the Journal of Cardiology also found that this habit raises the risk of heart disease by 28.5%.
Even “protective” tools like blue light glasses don’t work perfectly. A 2025 study noted that while these glasses reduce eye strain, scrolling through phones still delays sleep by 48 minutes. Worse, the harm isn’t temporary: long-term late-night phone use can disturb the body’s circadian rhythm (the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle) for weeks, even after the habit is stopped. The main cause is the blue light from screens, which cuts down melatonin (褪黑素) production by 67.3%, making 8 hours of rest equal to only 4 hours of quality sleep.
12. According to the passage, who is more likely to use phones before bed?
A. An office worker who often works late.
B. Someone who falls asleep easily.
C. A person who avoids screens before bed.
D. A teenager under 18.
13. All of the following are mentioned as health risks of bedtime phone use EXCEPT ______.
A. insomnia B. memory decline
C. heart-disease risk D. high blood pressure
14. What can be inferred from the 2025 study about blue light glasses?
A. They are a perfect solution to preventing sleep problems.
B. They can effectively stop all the harmful effects of phone use before bed.
C. They deal with only one aspect of the problem but fail to solve the delay in sleep.
D. They mainly help to reduce the production of melatonin by the body.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Blue Light: The Main Enemy of Sleep Quality
B. Bedtime Phone Use: Harmless Relaxation or Serious Health Risks?
C. How to Avoid Using Phones Before Bed Effectively
D. The Circadian Rhythm and Its Relationship with Phones

My family just moved here from St. Louis. It was my first day at a new high school and the very day of soccer tryouts (选拔赛). Soccer is my life, played soccer, went to soccer games, and watched soccer on television with Mom and Dad. They even got me a magazine about soccer.
We left very early in the morning, planning to be at our new home before classes began. If everything had gone perfectly, there would have been time for me to find my new classes, meet people, and even warm up before the tryouts.
However, while we were driving to my new home, our car suddenly stopped working on the highway under the hot sun. We waited anxiously for two hours for a rescue, only to spend another two hours arranging for a rental car. The whole time, my heart was pounding with worry, afraid that I would miss the tryouts.
Finally, we arrived at the new school. The moment I got out of the cat, I rushed towards the headmaster’s office to report, out of breath. “Oh, Tina I think you’re too late for the tryouts. Coach Turner said they’d end at 3 pm,” said Headmaster Morgan. She glanced up at the clock and shook her head, “They’re almost finished.” Feeling defeated, I bit my lower lip and held back tears. All of a sudden, I saw the latest soccer magazine in my backpack. At that moment, my favorite words from the magazine rang in my head good player never gives up, even when the game seems lost.”

“I m so sorry, but our car broke down”, I explained to the headmaster. I know I’m late, but I’ve been playing soccer my whole life. “This means everything to me. Please give me a chance to show what I can do.” I stared at the headmaster and begged, holding onto a tiny hope. Headmaster Morgan looked hesitant at first, her brows furrowed. But seeing the determination in my eyes, she let out a sigh and picked up the phone. “Coach Turner? There’s a determined girl here.” My heart raced as Headmaster Morgan finally pointed outside. “Go to the field quickly!”
“Three minutes,” Coach Turner said, rolling a soccer ball toward me. Without hesitation, I sprang into action. The wind rushed past my ears, and I could only hear the intense beating of my own heart. Sweat dripped down my neck as three defenders charged. I passed right, moved left, and then shot with my left foot. Finally, the ball flew over the goalkeeper’s hands, and went into the net. The coach’s eyes widened in surprise. I held my breath, waiting for his decision. “Welcome to the team,” Coach Turner announced, and I couldn’t help breaking into a huge smile. I knew it was my love for soccer that kept me from giving up.
