A
“A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth can get its boots(靴子)on.” said Mark Twain. In today’s Internet world of “fake(假的)news”, lies spread even faster and the truth is having trouble finding its boots.
To make matters worse, most young people get news from social media sites where facts are mixed with rumors(谣言), half-truths,and complete lies. This has led to young people becoming confused. In the latest PISA, which tested 15-year-olds worldwide on academic subjects, fewer than one in ten of the examinees were reported to be able to recognize fact from opinion.A Stanford University study showed that students at all levels of education could not tell real news from fake news.In one instance, 80 percent thought that a paid advertisement was a real news story.
Fake news is spread by people who have a prejudice(偏见).They want to influence public opinion either for or against something or someone. It is important, then, for young people to recognize when they are being used and to be doubtful about online information.
Traditional media, such as newspapers and television, are still the more believable sources of information.Reporters are professionally trained to look for facts, and editors have the job of making sure those facts are correct. However, if you are getting most of your information online, you have to be your own editor. In that case, the first thing to do is to look at the writer of a post.Is this person known to be objective? Does the site where you read the post have a prejudice? Next, look for other sources from mainstream media to make sure the information. In other words, by putting on your truth boots you won’t be fooled into chasing lies.

Harper Lee (1926—2016) was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird (published in 1960), which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck won three Academy Awards.
For decades, the book was Lee’s only major published fiction work, but it was hugely influential for generations of US readers. It has sold more than 10 million copies, and is one of the most widely taught novels in the US schools. In 2007,she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to literature.
Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. The world, however, continued waiting for a new novel from her, and on occasion she suggested that she was working on another story.
In 2015, a book did come out. Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as an adult. Criticism arose that the 89-year-old Lee was not able to agree to the manuscript’s release, and that other people had signed on her behalf.
Though Lee moved to New York in 1949, she spent many years guarding her privacy(隐私) in Monroeville, which served as the clear inspiration for the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird.
In 2007, Lee suffered a stroke(中风), but recovered and later settled in Monroeville permanently to care for her sister, Alice, who died in 2014.She was said to eat breakfast every morning at the same fast-food spot and was friendly with her neighbours. Countless Americans knew her only through her works, and they will undoubtedly miss her.

Previous studies of children have found links between the use of electronic media and physical health risks. Electronic media use is also associated with social connection. However, comparatively less is known about links with academic performance.
To help clarify these links, Mundy and colleagues studied 1,239 8-to 9-year-olds in Melbourne, Australia. They used national achievement test data to measure the children’s academic performance at the baseline and again after two years. They also asked the children’s parents to report on their kids’ use of electronic media.
The researchers found that watching two or more hours of television per day at the age of 8 or 9 was associated with lower reading performance compared to peers two years later; the difference was equal to losing four months of learning. Using a computer for more than one hour per day was linked to a similar degree of lost numeracy(计算能力). The analysis showed no links between the use of video games and academic performance.
By accounting for baseline academic performance and potentially influencing factors such as mental health difficulties and body mass index (BMI),and controlling for prior media use, the researchers were able to identify that television and computer use were associated with poorer academic performance.
These findings could help parents and teachers make better plans and develop clinical recommendations for electronic media use in late childhood. Future research could build on these results by examining continued associations in secondary school.
The authors add, “The debate about the effects of modern media on children’s learning has never been more important. This is the first large study of electronic media use and learning in primary school children, and results showed heavier users of television and computers had significant declines in reading two years later compared with light users.”
9.What is Mundy’s study mainly about?
A.The effect of video games on academic performance.
B.The links between electronic media use and physical health risks.
C.The association between electronic media use and social connection.
D.The relationship between electronic media use and academic performance.
10.How did the researchers make the new discovery?
A.By inferring from previous studies.
B.By referring to national achievement test data.
C.By analyzing children’s mental health difficulties.
D.By comparing academic performance before and after.
11.Which of the following statements may the author agree with?
A.Previous studies are inaccurate and unreliable.
B.Kids’ capacity to read declines when they apply e-books.
C.Kids playing video games can perform as well as before academically.
D.Watching TV will have a negative impact on kids merely within two years.
12.What makes the effects of modern media on children’s learning a hot issue?
A.Challenges from public health.
B.Clinical recommendation on leisure.
C.Parents’ concern about the future.
D.Tight schedules at schools.
