In a village a few kilometres from the West Flanders coast, Nele Bekaert fetches one of several Brabant horses that her family owns. Weighing about a ton, the powerful horse is ideal for pulling a drag net to catch tiny, grey shrimp (虾) in the North Sea. Bekaert rides the horse to the seaside of Oostduinkerke, Belgium.
Upon arrival, she puts on bright yellow waterproof overalls and ties ropes and a large net behind the horse. Two baskets are placed at the animal’s sides. Bekaert skillfully seats herself between the baskets. She leads the horse into the sea until the water reaches the top parts of its legs and they slowly move parallel to the coastline, causing a unique scene. A metal chain attached to the front of the net over the sand, creating “shockwaves” that cause shrimp to jump into the net, while water pressure pushes the catch to the back.
After about 30 minutes, Bekaert and her “co-worker” return to shore. She empties the net, washes and sorts the catch, keeping shrimp and fish that are fully grown, while releasing the small-sized shrimp and baby crabs back into the sea. This helps maintain biodiversity and prevents the unintentional capture of non- target species.
Bekaert is part of a team of 14 active horseback shrimp fishers, formerly known as East Dunkirk Horse Fishers. Each year in Oostduinkerke, they give 36 public demonstrations and participate in a Shrimp Festival, events funded by the government to keep the craft alive.
Nowadays, the old-fashioned method has been entirely replaced by commercial development except in Oostduinkerke. That is thanks to former mayor (市长) Honoré Loones, who saved horseback shrimp fishing from extinction in 1950 by making it a tourist attraction with the first Shrimp Festival. The craft has been supported by the government ever since.
The East Dunkirk Horse Fishers play a vital role in promoting the craft. Members travel for demonstrations at events across Europe. “The tradition is very important,” Bekaert notes. “I’m happy to help preserve and share it.”

A. Her fishing on horseback. B. Her plastic fishing net.
C. Her protective equipment. D. Her fishing off the coast.
5. Which word can best describe Bekaert’s method of sorting the catch?
A. Labor-saving. B. Profit-oriented. C. Sustainable. D. Efficient.
6. Why do the shrimp fishers give so many public demonstrations?
A. To work hard to survive. B. To pass down the ancient fishing skill.
C. To raise funds for the government. D. To commercialize the Shrimp Festival.
7. What can we infer about horseback shrimp fishing?
A. It is expected to die out soon. B. It boosts the global tourism industry.
C. It faced extinction in the past. D. It has threatened commercial fishing.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. C

Army ants are commonly found in Africa, South America, and Central America. They are known for being a massive army that can build a new path out of themselves when encountering obstacles.
Scientists from Princeton University study the “living” bridges allowing the ant colony (蚁群) to travel efficiently. They focus on the collective intelligence exhibited by the species and how this behavior can help develop robots that can cooperate as a group.
When army ants encounter obstacles such as a gap between leaves or branches, they will connect themselves across that gap while others walk on top of them. However, building the living bridges comes at a cost to the ant colony because the ants that take part in supporting the bridge are not available to hunt.
Using their tiny brains, the ants can weigh the costs and benefits of a bridge. In studying the decision-making ability of the ants, the researchers discovered that the ants build bridges where they get the most significant benefit for the least amount of bodies. They identified a sweet spot where the gap is large enough to justify building a bridge but not so large that it will take too many ants.
The collective intelligence of army ants demonstrates how individual-level interactions can produce coordinated (协调的) group behavior. By extracting the rules used by individual army ants in building living bridges, engineers can program a group of simple robots to create structures that are connected. Such systems can exhibit the beneficial properties observed in ant bridges, like real-time optimization (最优化) of position and shape, adaptability to local conditions, and rapid construction and deconstruction without needing external building materials.
For a long time, it has been a challenge in robotics to take robot parts and allow the robot to piece itself together and solve more significant problems. According to engineering professor David Hu from the Georgia Institute of Technology, army ants are proof that such a kind of robot can survive and have problems to solve in the real world.
8. Why do scientists study the behavior of army ants?
A. The ants often take collective action.
B. It brings insights for building robots.
C. It is different from that of other animals.
D. The ants travel more efficiently than humans.
9. What can we infer about army ants from paragraph 4?
A. They can weigh what they get. B. They form a bridge over any gap.
C. They are cooperative creatures. D. They often share their decisions.
10. What is a distinct feature of the ant bridge?
A. Low stability. B. Single structure.
C. Strong dependence. D. High adaptability.
11. What is the challenge that robots face according to the text?
A. Working side by side with humans.
B. Working in an unpredictable environment.
C. Developing autonomous integrating ability.
D. Increasing the flexibility of robotic arms.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. C

Yellowstone’s wolves are helping a new generation of young aspen (山杨) trees to grow tall and join the forest — the first new generation of such trees in Yellowstone’s northern range in 80 years.
Gray wolves had disappeared from Yellowstone National Park by 1930 following extensive habitat loss, human hunting and government wolf-killing programs. Without these wolves, populations of deer grew quickly. At their peak population, an estimated 18,000 deer ranged across the park, living on grasses as well as the leaves of trees like aspen. This prevented young trees from establishing themselves, and surveys in the 1990s found no young aspen trees. But when wolves were reintroduced in 1995, the picture began to change. As wolf numbers rose, the deer population in the park dropped sharply, and it is now down to about 2,000.
In the new study, published in the journal Forest Ecology and Management, Luke Painter and his colleagues from Oregon State University surveyed aspen stands. “We’re seeing significant new growth of young aspen and this is the first time that we’ve found it in our plots since the 1940s,” Painter said.
However, while Yellowstone’s aspen are recovering, they aren’t out of the woods just yet. The deer population has declined, but bison (野牛) numbers have increased in recent years. Bison are a lot harder for wolves to take down, said Painter, so increasing numbers of bison may be emerging as a new restriction on aspen in some areas.
The re-emergence of aspen has widespread effects, Painter said. “Aspen are a key species for biodiversity. The aspen trees let more sunlight through their leaves, which creates a habitat that supports a lot of diversity of plants.”
“The paper shows the important ecological benefits occurring from the restoration of wolves to Yellowstone National Park,” Dominick Spracklen, a professor at the University of Leeds, said. “Ecosystems that lack large carnivores (食肉动物) are often increasingly out of balance. While reintroducing carnivores raises important challenges around human-wildlife coexistence, this work brings the significant ecological benefits in the long run.”
12. What can be inferred about Yellowstone Park before 1930 according to the text?
A. Deer population reached its peak.
B. Human activities slightly affected wolves.
C. Bison were the main species in the park.
D. Gray wolves existed with deer there.
13. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean?
A. The aspen trees are too young to make a forest.
B. The aspen trees cannot get rid of survival threat.
C. Other tree species may hold back aspen’s recovery.
D. Yellowstone is not the best habitat for aspen trees.
14. What is Professor Spracklen’s attitude toward carnivore restoration in ecosystems?
A. Favorable. B. Skeptical. C. Disapproving. D. Worried.
15. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The History of Gray wolves in Yellowstone
B. The Return of Gray wolves Revives Aspen Trees
C. The Challenges of Human-Wildlife Coexistence Grow
D. The Restoration of Large Carnivores in National Parks
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. B

54. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。
In a quiet neighbourhood in Pune lived an old gardener named Mohan Kaka. His small house had the most beautiful garden in the entire area— roses of every colour, jasmine vines (茉莉花藤) climbing the walls, and a magnificent mango tree that bore sweet fruit every summer. With weathered hands that told the story of decades spent in the soil, Kaka tended his garden carefully every morning, watering, pruning (剪枝), talking gently to his plants.
One day, a young software engineer named Vikram moved into the house next door. Ambitious and always in a hurry, Vikram was used to instant satisfaction-fast food, fast Internet, fast career growth. One morning, he saw Kaka planting a young tree. Curious, he walked over. The old man told him it was a sandalwood (檀香) tree. When Vikram learned it would take twenty to thirty years to mature, he laughed, “Kaka, you’re seventy! You won’t live to see it grown. Why waste your time?”
Kaka looked up at Vikram, his eyes twinkling with wisdom. He led Vikram to the magnificent mango tree. “My grandfather planted it when I was five,” he said. “He never lived to taste its fruit. My father watered it for years before he passed away. Now I sit under its shade, eat its mangoes, and think of them both. They planted it for me, for you, for everyone who comes after.” Vikram fell silent.
“That sandalwood tree?” Kaka continued. “I may never see it grown. But maybe your children will. Maybe they will sit under its shade and thank an old gardener they never met. That’s enough for me.” He reminded Vikram that while his work brought quick results, life’s most important things — relationships, character and legacy (传承) — could not be rushed.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Vikram felt something shift inside him.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Soon, Vikram decided to plant a young tree of his own.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Vikram felt something shift inside him. He thought about his own life — constantly chasing the next achievement. He never stopped to think whether what he was building would last beyond his own lifetime. From that day on, Vikram started spending his mornings with Kaka in the garden. The old man taught him how to plant, how to wait, how to care for something without expecting immediate results. Vikram gradually understood that patience wasn’t wasting time, but sowing seeds for a future we might not see.
Soon, Vikram decided to plant a young tree of his own. He chose a small sandalwood sapling, just like Kaka’s. He watered it patiently every morning. As months passed without visible growth, sometimes his old impatience returned. He still couldn’t help rushing. But when he saw Kaka’s young tree and thought about his words, he comforted himself that legacy isn’t about speed — it’s about care. Underneath that soil, the tree’s roots are spreading wider than the branches above. We just can’t see them yet.

4. What makes Bekaert’s shrimp fishing unusual?

The high-speed trap is a good example of how serious sport can make physical activity less enjoyable. Pressure to get good results, racing the clock, and always trying to improve make running harder for many people, both physically and mentally. _____16_____ Just be slower, easier, focused on enjoyment and a healthy lifestyle-like slow jogging.
_____17_____ Its creator, professor Hiroaki Tanaka, was also a long-distance runner. His own health problems inspired him to create a training method based on low-intensity sessions and focusing on running technique. The style became popular in Japan and the USA during the 1990s and 2000s.
The core of slow jogging is smile. _____18_____ Instead of pushing for speed and intensity, we go for movement that boosts our mood. With slow jogging, you can enjoy a smile and a conversation while you run.
Slow jogging is built around three main elements, making it different from other kinds of running. _____19_____ Slow jogging is a low-intensity activity. The pace is very relaxed, with the heart rate staying below 70% of its maximum. While slow jogging can be done at any low speed, rhythm is what matters most. The best value is 180 steps per minute, which is typical for long-distance running. In slow jogging, instead of rolling from heel to toe, we land and push off from the middle of the foot. _____20_____
When running, keep your posture upright-shoulders relaxed, arms bent and moving naturally. And of course, don’t forget to smile-that’s exactly what it’s all about!
A. Slow jogging started in Japan.
B. This is a natural running technique.
C. Training should feel good, not painful.
D. You have to deserve to run hard and fast.
E. Its variations have made it even more popular.
F. They are running pace, rhythm and landing technique.
G. That is why trying a new way of running is a good idea.
