I grew up in a modest village and faced physical challenges from an early age that affected my mobility. Even so, I pushed forward with determination, completed my education, and dreamed of a stable livelihood.
For some time, I ran a small grocery shop, but it collapsed due to limited capital and unpaid dues. When that business fell apart, my only source of income disappeared. Supporting my wife and our young daughter became increasingly uncertain, and the future felt clouded with worry.
During this difficult period, I found hope through the Bangladesh Agro Processor Association(BAPA), which was implementing an apprenticeship programme under the ILO PROGRESS project. The programme aimed to train 500 apprentices across eight industries while promoting equal opportunities. When a neighbour told me about an opening at one of the participating agri-processing companies, I gathered my courage and applied. Luckily, I made it.
The company that focused on employing persons with disabilities saw potential in me. They welcomed me as an apprentice and even improved my work environment to support my needs. This inclusive approach ensured that I could learn, contribute, and grow.
I was placed in the packaging department. At first, the work was challenging, but with guidance from my supervisors and my own determination, I adapted quickly. Soon, I proved that capability is not defined by physical limitations but by opportunity and support. The company provided a safe and encouraging workplace with daily meals, access to a doctor, and weekly leave. The support systems gave me dignity and motivation.
I began my career there earning about $60 per month, and after completing three months of apprenticeship, my salary increased to about $90 per month. This stability has eased my family’s worries. Although I currently stay in a dormitory because my village is far from the workplace, my weekly visits home are filled with joy and renewed purpose.
I am genuinely thankful for this opportunity to work and build a better life. I dream of advancing my career and securing a brighter future for my family.

Countries around the world have promised to stop the loss of nature. Under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework’s Target 3, governments agreed to conserve at least 30% of land and sea by 2030. Protected areas, such as parks and nature reserves, are still very important, but they are not the only way. Other area-based effective conservation measures allow countries to count useful protection work outside formal protected areas.
A report on six Latin American countries shows that many local people are already protecting forests, rivers, and wildlife in their daily lives. In many places, native peoples, local communities, and private land owners care for land through long-used ways of management. These efforts help connect protected areas and build a wider network across large regions.
The report includes 28 examples from different countries. In Peru, groups that manage public forests work together to watch the forests and reduce damage, even with limited support. In Brazil, river communities have secured shared land rights and adopted local fishing rules, helping both nature and local life. In Ecuador, several rural local governments have made a common plan that links conservation with farming and jobs.
Even so, the initiatives carried out at the local level come with a set of notable challenges. Some communities do not have clear legal rights to the land they have cared for over many years. Some receive little long-term financial support. They may also face pressure from mining, oil drilling, and large-scale farming. The report suggests that support should fit local needs. Possible tools include tax cuts, public funds, and payments for protecting the environment. Just as important, communities should help decide how these resources are used.
Across these cases, one message is clear: Nature does better when communities have rights, recognition, and resources. Protected areas remain necessary, but they are only part of the answer. As countries move toward their goals, they need to respect local knowledge, improve laws, and build fair support systems. The good news is clear: Communities across Latin America are proving that people and nature can grow stronger together.

Scientists in California have turned a sci-fi idea into reality. A company has successfully achieved communication between two people who were both asleep and engaged in lucid (清醒的) dreaming.
Lucid dreaming is when someone becomes aware that they are dreaming and can even control parts of the dream. This happens during the rapid eye movement stage of sleep, which is when our dreams are the most graphic. The two participants in the experiment were both experienced lucid dreamers, meaning they had developed the skill to be aware that they were dreaming.
Before falling asleep, the participants were attached to special equipment that tracked their brain activity and sleep patterns in real time. This data was sent to a central system that monitored their dreams as they unfolded.
The first participant entered a lucid dream, and the system, recognizing the brain activity linked to this state, sent a word to him randomly. The word, called “Remmyo”, was from a language created specifically for the experiment. The word “Zhilak” was transmitted through earbuds (耳塞) while the participant was still dreaming. In the dream, the person heard the word and repeated it out loud. Sensors captured this spoken word and sent it back to the system.
A few minutes later, the second participant also entered a lucid dream. The system detected the brain activity indicating this and sent the stored word, “Zhilak”, to her through earbuds. In her dream, she heard the word and repeated it as well. When she woke up, she confirmed that the word she heard in her dream was “Zhilak”, marking the first successful communication between two people in their dreams.
This breakthrough could have big implications for future research in sleep science. According to the company, this kind of technology might eventually help with mental health treatment, learning new skills, and other applications. The company’s founder Michael Raduga said, “This opens the door to countless commercial applications, reshaping how we think about communication and interaction in the dream world.” However, the technology and the results need to be reviewed and replicated by other scientists to ensure its accuracy and effectiveness.
12. What does the underlined word “graphic” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Imaginative. B. Colorful. C. Interesting. D. Vivid.
13. What did the system do upon detecting the first participant’s lucid dream?
A. It created a special language. B. It sent a special word to him.
C. It monitored his sleep patterns. D. It analyzed the brain activity data.
14. What does the communication between the participants mean?
A. A one-way information relay. B. A fully automated system test.
C. A failed scientific experiment. D. A real-time mutual conversation.
15. What can we know about the experiment from the last paragraph?
A. Its practical use is limited. B. It has won wide recognition.
C. Its value remains uncertain. D. It will generate healthy profits.
D 13. B 14. A 15. C
根据第二段中“This happens during the rapid eye movement stage of sleep, which is when our dreams are the most graphic. (这发生在睡眠的快速眼动阶段,此时我们的梦境是最graphic。)”可知,在快速眼动阶段,人的梦境是最生动逼真的。graphic在此处表示“生动的,形象的”,与vivid意思相近。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“The first participant entered a lucid dream, and the system, recognizing the brain activity linked to this state, sent a word to him randomly. (第一名参与者进入清醒梦后,系统识别到与该状态相关的脑活动,随机向他发送了一个单词。)”可知,系统检测到第一位参与者的清醒梦状态后,向他发送了一个特殊单词。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“The word “Zhilak” was transmitted through earbuds (耳塞) while the participant was still dreaming. In the dream, the person heard the word and repeated it out loud. Sensors captured this spoken word and sent it back to the system. (“Zhilak”这个词在参与者仍在做梦时通过耳塞传递给他。在梦中,这个人听到了这个词并大声重复出来。传感器捕捉到他说出的这个词,并将其发送回系统。)”和第五段中“The system detected the brain activity indicating this and sent the stored word, “Zhilak”, to her through earbuds. (系统检测到表明这一状态的大脑活动,并通过耳塞将存储的词“Zhilak”发送给她。)”及实验流程可知,系统先将单词传给第一位参与者,再将他传回的单词转发给第二位参与者,全程没有双向实时对话,属于单向的信息传递接力。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“However, the technology and the results need to be reviewed and replicated by other scientists to ensure its accuracy and effectiveness. (然而,这项技术和实验结果还需要其他科学家进行审核和重复验证,以确保其准确性和有效性。)”可知,该实验的实际价值目前还没有得到完全确认,仍存在不确定性。

How to Refuse Others Properly as a High School Student
As a high school student, you value friendship and hope to get along well with people around you. ___16___ Unwilling acceptance often makes you buried in extra work and slows down your own progress. Learning to say no appropriately is a necessary social skill for you.
Distinguish between reasonable requests and improper ones. True friends will respect your heavy study pressure. If a friend wants you to give up your reviewing time for unimportant entertainment activities, this is a request you should politely refuse. ___17___
Choose suitable ways to express your refusal. ___18___ You can state your real difficulty honestly instead of making up complex lies. For example, you can explain that you have to finish a lot of reviewing work before the coming exam. Meanwhile, you can offer limited help within your ability when possible. This shows you care about others though you cannot satisfy their full demands.
___19___ Some classmates may try to persuade you again to change your mind. If you give in because of peer pressure, you will fall into the same trouble once more. Keep your attitude polite and steady. Good relationships will not break just because of your reasonable refusal.
Understand that saying no is not an act of selfishness. ___20___ When you refuse wisely, you protect your limited time and energy from being drained unnecessarily. This, in turn, helps you maintain emotional stability and sustain a high level of focus in your studies. Gradually, you will strike a good balance between keeping social contacts and protecting your own needs.
A. It is an act of self-respect.
B. Put yourself in your friend’s shoes.
C. Stick to your decision firmly after you refuse.

上文“As a high school student, you value friendship and hope to get along well with people around you. (作为一名高中生,你珍视友谊,希望和身边的人相处融洽。)”点明高中生重视人际关系的特点,下文“Unwilling acceptance often makes you buried in extra work and slows down your own progress. (不情愿的接受往往会让你陷入额外的工作,拖慢自己的进度。)”说明勉强答应他人请求的负面影响。空处应承上启下,承接高中生的社交困境,引出下文“学会恰当拒绝”的主题。G选项“你可能发现很难拒绝同学的请求。”中的“find it hard to turn down requests”与上文“value friendship”形成逻辑呼应,也为下文“Unwilling acceptance”的后果做铺垫。
上文“Distinguish between reasonable requests and improper ones. True friends will respect your heavy study pressure. If a friend wants you to give up your reviewing time for unimportant entertainment activities, this is a request you should politely refuse.
上文“Choose suitable ways to express your refusal. (选择合适的方式表达你的拒绝。)”点明本段核心是拒绝的表达方式,下文“You can state your real difficulty honestly instead of making up complex lies. (你可以坦诚说出自己真正的难处,而不要编造复杂的谎言。)”给出了温和拒绝的具体做法。空处应引出不当拒绝方式的弊端,反衬下文正确做法的合理性。E选项“直接生硬的拒绝可能会伤害人际关系。”中的“Direct and cold rejection”与下文“honestly state your real difficulty”形成正反对比,逻辑衔接紧密。
下文“Some classmates may try to persuade you again to change your mind. If you give in because of peer pressure, you will fall into the same trouble once more. Keep your attitude polite and steady. (一些同学可能会再次劝说你改变主意。如果你因为同伴压力而让步,你会再次陷入同样的麻烦。保持礼貌而坚定的态度。)”说明拒绝他人后可能面临的反复劝说场景,强调不能轻易动摇。空处作为本段主题句,应概括本段核心行为要求。C选项“拒绝后要坚定地坚持自己的决定。”中的“Stick to your decision firmly”与下文“keep your attitude polite and steady”形成内容呼应,统领全段。
上文“Understand that saying no is not an act of selfishness. (要明白说“不”不是一种自私的行为。)”纠正了对拒绝的错误认知,下文“When you refuse wisely, you protect your limited time and energy from being drained unnecessarily. (当你明智地拒绝时,你能保护自己有限的时间和精力不被不必要地消耗。)”说明拒绝的正向意义。空处应承接上文否定“自私”的表述,给出对拒绝行为的正向定义。A选项“这是一种自重的行为。”中的“act of self-respect”与上文“not an act of selfishness”形成语义转折衔接,契合段落逻辑。

When I signed up for the school English speech contest themed Teenagers’ Responsibility in the New Era, I thought it would be a piece of cake for me. As a high school student who had won several English competition awards in junior high school, I was filled with overconfidence and even skipped some voluntary practice sessions organized by the English teacher.
My classmate Lily, who was also a participant in the contest and always took every chance to practice, reminded me several times after class to spend more time polishing my speech and practicing my pronunciation. But I just brushed her off casually every time, saying I had everything under control and that a little practice on the eve of the contest would be enough.
Weeks passed quickly, and the contest was just around the corner. The night before it, I finally sat down at my desk to prepare my speech carefully. To my great horror, I found I could barely remember the key points I had drafted before, and my pronunciation of some long and complex sentences was still awkward and not fluent. I tried to go over the content overnight, but great anxiety made it hard for me to focus my attention.
On the day of the contest, I walked into the school hall with a heavy heart and stood backstage nervously, my hands sweating heavily and my heart beating wildly in my chest. When I saw Lily standing aside, calmly practicing her speech with a clear mind and a steady voice, I felt a strong sense of regret for not taking her advice and being so careless about the contest.
Just as the host called my name loudly and I was about to step onto the stage, I accidentally knocked over a water bottle on the table beside me, and the water wet my speech notes. The paper became soft and the words were all blurred. I froze on the spot, my mind going totally blank with no idea what to do next.

Just then, Lily rushed over to me with a piece of white paper and a pen. She patted my shoulder gently to calm me down and said in a soft voice, “Don’t panic! I’ve listened to you practice your speech and I remember the main outline clearly. Let’s write it down together quickly.” Her warm and encouraging words calmed my racing heart a little. With her quick help, I jotted down the key points of the speech in just two minutes. She also reminded me to speak slowly and take deep breaths. Before I went on stage, she gave me a big smile and a thumbs-up, which gave me the courage to step forward with confidence.
After finishing the speech, I walked off the stage with a heavy heart. I knew I hadn’t performed my best because of my overconfidence and carelessness, and many parts of the speech were not expressed as well as I had expected. I walked straight to Lily and thanked her sincerely, apologizing for ignoring her kind advice before the contest. To my surprise, she shook her head and smiled softly, “It’s okay! You tried your best to finish it, and that’s what really matters. We all make mistakes, and the key is to learn a lesson from them.” Later, when the results came out, I didn’t win a prize, but I gained more than an award.

4. Why did the author apply for the apprenticeship?
A. To leave his village. B. To run a grocery shop.
C. To support his family. D. To launch a programme.
5. How did the company treat the author?
A. It gave high pay at first. B. It changed his workplace.
C. It offered support for him. D. It provided free daily meals.

C. Generous and independent. D. Responsible and determined.
7. What does the author think of his present life?
A. It is busy and colorful. B. It is stable and hopeful.
C. It is simple and ordinary. D. It is hard and discouraging.

8. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To show some findings.

A. Challenges faced by some countries.
B. Some cases of conservation efforts.

A. Communities have had legal rights.
B. The government support fits local needs.
C. Protecting the environment costs a lot.
D. The conservation work meets barriers.
11. Which of the following may be the best title for the text?
A. Protected areas Are Still the Top Priority
B. Latin America Leads Global Conservation
C. Communities Strengthen Nature Conservation
D. Environmental Protection Expands in America

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

Just then, Lily rushed over to me with a piece of white paper and a pen.
