Amy Wolff, a 36-year-old public speaking coach in Newberg, Oregon, is the founder of the Don't Give Up Movement, a nonprofit organization sowing seeds of love and hope through inspirational yard signs and other items. In May 2017, Amy learned from a church friend and teacher that the school district had lost two students and four former students that year because of their mental problems. Amy said, “I couldn't do nothing.”
She recalled a crazy idea she'd had two years before: yard signs as a way of encouraging people. She asked her friend Jessica Brittell, a graphic designer, to create and print 20 signs with the messages “Don't Give Up”, “Your Mistakes Do Not Define You” and “You Are Worthy of Love”.
Amy, her husband John, and their two daughters knocked on doors around Newberg, asking strangers to put the signs in their yards. Everyone said yes! People in the community were quick to talk about the signs. Within a week, Amy had sold 150 signs at cost.
Amy added new messages—“You Matter”, “You Are Not Alone”—as well as wristbands, stickers, car decals (贴纸), cards and other “symbols of hope and love”. Besides supporting those at risk for suicide, the movement has comforted people facing health problems, isolation, job loss, marital issues and abuse.
Jason Boyd, assistant principal of Seaside High in Seaside, Oregon, bought 225 signs to put up around the school. Students tell him, “The signs help us make it through the day.” More than 701,000 items have been distributed (分发) in all 50 states and 27 countries.
Don't Give Up Movement doesn't do any marketing. “It's love with no strings attached,” said Amy. The movement has spread mainly through people spotting the signs and by word of mouth. Friends on cross-country trips left decals and cards in restaurants, stores and rest stops.
We should look for ways to spread hope and love in our daily lives. Buy a stranger a cup of coffee. Praise the server. Believe you always have something to offer—and do it unconditionally.

It's hard to forget a time when so many apologies stirred the air around us. And what's everyone so sorry about? Well, the usual things that are against the rules of social behavior or morals (道德), poor decisions, wrong marketing actions, and other more serious wrong actions require more than an apology.
“Apologizing gets people to feel uncomfortable and risky,” notes an essay in Harvard Business Review. “There's a loss of power or face involved—it rearranges the status grades and makes them feel like they have a duty to others because they have offered help. So it's no wonder people try to avoid thinking about something unpleasant or drawing attention to mistakes and that when one is pointed out, they get defensive, arguing their side of the story and shifting blame to others.”
But nothing is more important to an apology than a straight-up and firm “I'm sorry.” Psychologist Guy Winch puts those words at the top of his most important factors for a successful apology. The speed of that sorry is also important, notes Guy Grenier, a mental therapist. The longer you wait, the wider the divide grows.
Most importantly, a non-reactive apology must convey a sense of personal understanding of why everyone is so upset. In other words, it has to show that the apologizer has listened and even learned from the misbehavior. Admitting that we're wrong, understanding the nature of the mistake and showing that we're willing to listen—none of these steps are easy. But they're the marks of a sincere apology, the kind that stands a chance of being accepted, rather than cause more anger.
28.What's the main idea of paragraph 1?
A.We have ways to make an apology.
B.We are used to accepting apologies.
C.We are living in the age of apology.
D.We usually take apology for granted.
29.What can we infer from the essay in Harvard Business Review?
A.It is hard to say sorry. B.It is useless to say sorry.
C.It is foolish to say sorry. D.It is unforgivable to say sorry.
30.What is the best way to make an apology according to the text?
A.To express it clearly and loudly.
B.To offer it patiently and sincerely.
C.To take action directly and quickly.
D.To make preparations early and carefully.
31.What should the people who apologize do?
A.Listen. B.Discuss.
C.Organize. D.Communicate.

Today we talk about pointless, useless actions. And we have an expression to help us do that. For this expression, let's go to the beach!
For a beach trip, we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable. For example, a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. Some people choose to bring a beach chair. And a beach umbrella protects you from the sun's powerful rays. Swimming in the ocean can really make you hungry. So many people bring a cooler for food and drinks.
Making sandcastles on the beach is a fun activity. So, bringing sand-digging tools—like a shovel (铁铲) and a bucket—is a good idea. But you do not need to bring the sand. Most beaches have a lot of that already! And that brings us to today's expression: “Bringing sand to the beach”.
“Bringing sand to the beach” describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary. The actions are futile. This means serving no purpose. “Bringing sand to the beach” can also mean overkill. Overkill means having more than what is necessary or useful. We usually say “like” when we use this expression. For example, bringing flowers to the opening of a flower store is like bringing sand to the beach.
We usually use “like bringing sand to the beach” when bringing something to a place is unnecessary. But you can also say the same idea with different objects and places. For example, I could also say it is “like bringing a sandwich to a restaurant”. With this example, the meaning goes one step further. It also means that what you are bringing (the sandwich) is of poorer quality than what you would find at the place (the restaurant).
32.How does the author introduce the expression discussed in the text?
A.By listing uncommon beach activities.
B.By describing a scene of a beach trip.
C.By comparing sand to other beach items.
D.By providing an example of a pointless action.
33.What does the underlined word “futile” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Useless. B.Common.
C.Dangerous. D.Meaningful.
34.What does the author think of the flowers brought to the opening of a flower store?
A.They are sweet. B.They are proper gifts.
C.They are not good enough. D.They are not needed there.
35.Which saying has a similar meaning to “bringing a sandwich to a restaurant”?
A.Seeing is believing.
B.Teaching a fish how to swim.
C.Killing two birds with one stone.
D.Thinking twice before you jump.

Lisa woke up very excited on Saturday morning. Today she was turning 10. She thought her mother would make her a special breakfast. Last year on her birthday, Lisa woke up to the smell of pancakes and sausage. The kitchen table was full of fresh fruit and juice, and her family had even bought lots of fresh flowers to put on the table.
But when she went downstairs this morning, her father, mother and brother were eating cereal (麦片) at the table, just like any other day. No one even said “Happy birthday”.
When the phone rang and her mother announced that Lisa's aunt wanted to speak to her, she knew that it must be to wish her the best on her 10th birthday. But to Lisa's surprise, her aunt simply wanted to remind her to pick up her mail the next week while her aunt was out of town.
Lisa was quite confused. She thought that her family would say something about her special day, but she didn't want to seem upset. She tried to be cheerful. After all, she was looking forward to meeting her friends in the park soon. Surely they were going to be excited about her birthday.
When Lisa arrived at the park, her friend Jane was the first to greet her. “Nice day, isn't it, Lisa?” she asked.
Lisa, ready for her friend to wish her a happy birthday, responded excitedly, “Yes, it is! It's a great day. You know why?”
“Because it's Saturday and the weather is great!” Jane replied.
Lisa nodded, but looked down in disappointment.
Soon the rest of her friends arrived, and they all had a good time playing soccer and spending time together. But Lisa couldn't help thinking that it was strange that none of them had mentioned her birthday.
As she walked home in the late afternoon sun, Lisa tried her best not to cry. How could everyone forget her birthday? She was close to tears by the time she reached her home.
When she walked in, she was quite surprised.

第二节
One possible version:
There was a box with her name on it in the living room. Thinking that it might be her birthday present, she went up and opened the box with delight. Inside the box was a photo album filled with photos of important moments growing up with her family and friends. Lisa sank in the precious memories. At that time, Lisa came to wonder where they were and began to search every room.
No one was home, but there was a letter on the table. Her heart beating wildly, she reached out for that letter, which was written by her family and friends, saying how great a family member and a friend she was. With tears welling up in her eyes, she found in surprise that she was already surrounded by her loved ones. “Happy birthday!” they said cheerfully and sent their best wishes to Lisa. All of them had a wonderful evening together, adding another chapter to Lisa's album.

W:So you're into history. But I prefer comedy and sci-fi movies.
M:Yes. I'm interested in the life of ancient people and I also like studying the history of the countries that I have visited.
W:What countries have you visited?
M:I've been to 20 countries.
W:Really?I guess you can't name them all.
M:Mexico, Peru, etc. I spent almost a year in Egypt and now I've been here in Japan for six months. And then I will visit Korea for a month.
W:Wow!Are you on business most of the time?
M:Yeah. So for my health, I prefer to stay at home to have a good rest on weekends.

W:John, the heavy workload of primary school students has been a national concern.
M:Yes, Susan, especially during vacation time, they have a lot of homework and have to go to extra classes. My sister Tina signs my niece Joy up for three extra classes on weekdays and doubles that number during the holiday.
W:But in fact, a heavy study burden can limit students' creativity and damage their health.
M:Everyone knows that, but they do it anyway. Happily, a lot of parents have started lessening the pressure on their kids.
W:I usually give my students less homework because I think it is better than not being able to hand it in on time or copying.
M:So do I. Most parents are very anxious about their children's study, but actually, it is more important to develop children's interest in study.
W:And let them develop good study habits, which can benefit them throughout their lives. Oh, let's discuss it after work. I have to give a class now.
(Text 10)
M:My name is Jerry Brown. I entered high school last year. I get up around 6:30 am on weekdays. After I get up, I usually do a morning run and do a little exercise. Then I take a shower before eating my breakfast. It usually takes me 15 minutes to get to school by bike. The class begins at 8:00 am with my favorite math class. After the fourth class, we can take a two-hour break. During the period, I have lunch given by my mother in a box, and then I have a rest. The break ends at 1:30 pm and after that, we continue to have four classes. The school ends at 4:55 pm. After school, I usually do some sports with my classmates. I usually get home at around 6:30 pm. Then it's time for supper and homework.
