The Future of Clean Energy in Homes
Heating, cooling, and powering homes contribute significantly to global CO2 emissions ()As
nations strive to reduce their carbon footprints, residential energy use-responsible for nearly 20%of
energy-related emissions-poses unique challenges.Below is the 2025 breakdown of household emissions
by source.
Electricity 52%
Heating 28%
Cooling 12%
Appliances 6%
Lighting 2%
英语(四)第2页(共8页)

Clean energy solutions for homes must be affordable, efficient, and adaptable to diverse climates.
While technologies vary, here are key innovations driving the shift towards sustainability.
Heat Pumps-Efficient Heating/Cooling
Replacing gas boilers, electric heat pumps transfer warmth from air or ground, cutting heating
emissions by 50%.Hybrid models are expected to work in sub-zero temperatures in the near future.
Smart Grids-Dynamic Electricity Management
AI-powered grids (optimize energy use, storing surplus solar power during peak hours and
reducing reliance on fossil-fuel backups.
Solar Panels-Rooftop Revolution
Solar energy is the most accessible renewable source for many households.Advances in photovoltaic
cells have cut costs by 80%since 2010,making them a practical choice in numerous regions.
Wind Turbines-Community Microgrids
Small-scale turbines (in windy areas can power neighborhoods, though land use debates
persist."The scale of this transition is amazing,"says Dr Elena Torres,a climate scientist at MIT.
Residential renewables like solar and heat pumps could meet 90%of global household demand by
2050-but only if investments are increased to three times within this decade.Recent studies show that
every $1 invested in green homes today saves $5 in future climate adaptation costs. This isn't just an
environmental necessity;it's economically unavoidable.
21.Which two categories combined account for over three-quarters of total household emissions?
A.Heating and Cooling.
B.Electricity and Heating.
C.Cooling and Appliances.
D.Appliances and Lighting.
22.Which technology is highlighted as cost-effective for diverse climates?
A.Heat pumps.B.Smart grids.

When Bella Lin was 12 years old,she noticed that her guinea pigs (seemed unhappy in their
small cage with "prison-like bars",Lin told the CNBC Make It website.Focusing on finding an
alternative to traditional cages for her pets, the now 17-year-old from Mountain View,US,began her
designs.
Lin experimented with multiple designs and used around $2,000 from her savings to start her side
business,Guinea Loft,on Amazon in November 2022.It made a big difference and sold nearly 11,000
cages and brought in more than $410,000 in 2023,according to CNBC Make It.
Initially,Lin informed her father of her desire to develop an improved cage. Her father had relations
with a family-owned factory in China through a previous client, and he reached out to them.
Traditional guinea pig cages typically consist of bars, roofs, and either tarp (or plastic
bottoms, making them hard to clean and often smell bad.Lin's initial glass,open-floor cages offered
more visibility and mobility, with a two-layered bottom. This design allows for the easy removal of soiled
bedding by pushing it into a removable plastic tray (f).However, due to high shipping costs, the
glass material was impractical, and the open floor caused problems for her smaller guinea pigs,as their
feet would get stuck.
Lin and her six-person team in China devoted late nights to researching and testing products. Her
team handled the sourcing, manufacturing, packaging and photography of the products. In the end, they
英语(四)第3页(共8页)
chose acrylic, instead of glass, and crafted replaceable bottoms,as Lin described it.The bottoms are
easy to throw out, which is good for business:once customers run out of the bottoms, they have to visit
Lin's Amazon store again to reorder.
"Witnessing the practical effects of Guinea Loft cages through customer reviews and emails is
empowering,"Lin said."As someone who once placed great emphasis on academic recognition, the
success of my side business has boosted my confidence in exploring life beyond high school.
24.What inspired Lin to design a new cage for guinea pigs?
A.Their bad living conditions.
B.Her desire to replace old cages.
C.The huge profits in her business
D.Her unpleasant experience at school.
25.What is a major advantage of Lin's new cage?
A.It lasts long.
B.It smells nice.
C.It is waterproof.
D.It is easy to clean.
26.How does Lin sound in the last paragraph?
A.Humorous.
B.Encouraged.
C.Concerned.
D.Curious.
27.What may be a suitable title for the text?
A.Inventing for Our Pets
B.Running a Side Business
C.Bella Lin's Academic Achievements
D.The Application of Guinea Pig Cages

Five female scientists have identified and formally described two previously unknown species of wart
sea slugs (found in the waters off North Sulawesi,Indonesia. These new additions to marine
biodiversity have been named Phyllidia ovata and Phyllidia fontjei.
Wart sea slugs are part of the Phyllidiidae family and are found all over the Indo-Pacific.They feed
on sponges(海绵动物)and use the poisons from their food to protect themselves.Their vibrant and
striking colors,as well as their ability to avoid hunters through chemical means have made them well-
known among both researchers and marine life enthusiasts.
In North Sulawesi alone, scientists have recorded around 350 species of sea slugs.Among these,
nearly 100 are believed to be newly discovered but have not yet been officially named. With the formal
recognition of Phyllidia ovata and Phyllidia fontjei, the particularly rare and colorful species have now
been added to the scientific record.
Phyllidia ovata is named for its egg-like shape and pattern. It had been photographed in several
places over the past 23 years but has been officially recognized now.A diver collected one in North
Sulawesi, and it's up to 5 cm long.Phyllidia fontjei is named after Dr Fontje Kaligis, who helped
international research on North Sulawesi's biodiversity. With a maximum documented size of 16 mm,this
small species of wart sea slug is difficult to find.
These discoveries were helped by people without formal scientific education but passionate about
Earth's diversity.Photographs and data posted on citizen science platforms, social media sites, and
committed sea slug communities provided researchers with vital information for identifying these new
species and figuring out their geographical distribution.
“We all use these platforms in many different fields of taxonomy(分类学)as they provide useful
records when the species are distinctive, and have done so for more than two decades, says Dr Nathalie
Yonow of Swansea University, one of the authors of the study.
28.What did the five female scientists identify?
A.A lonely island.
B.Unusual new species.
C.A new kind of seafood.
D.Polluted waters in Indonesia.
英语(四)第4页(共8页)
29.What does the underlined word "vibrant"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Predictable.B.Ordinary.
C.Simple.
D.Bright.
30.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.How the two species are named.
B.How a scientist assessed a species.
C.How an international team is formed.
D.How the researchers tested small fish.
31.What can be inferred about citizen science platforms?
A.They mainly engage with young minds.
B.They often offer inaccurate information.
C.They are crucial for finding new species.
D.They are unpopular in the scientific community.

Martha Siede, who has lived with dystonic cerebral palsy(肌张力障碍型脑瘫)since birth, shares
her powerful story in the book In Pursuit of"Normal".As a disabled reader,I was delighted, relieved,
and lit up with encouragement and connection while reading this book.
I especially appreciated the way Martha lays out our struggles frankly because of how frequently we
encounter them."The hospital is where you would think disabilities would be comfortable and
accepted,"she writes,"but it does not work.It is like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole."
Martha's experiences reflected my own frustration (there:narrow doorways and crowded spaces
that were difficult for me to get through.
Throughout each stage of her life,Martha excels in fair, inclusive environments and struggles
greatly otherwise. My preferred adaptation explored in this book is that of clothing companies who
advertise by using photos in which models are seated so that wheelchair users can picture how it will look
on their bodies.
Martha makes a clear,easy-to-follow distinction between when she gets the kind of support that
makes her life more equal, and when she does not.Recounting these hardships never feels like a lecture
or a reframing of history.Instead,Martha has written something that feels honest and strikes a balance
between serious health concerns and conversations where she's direct about some tough topics. This tone
is very true to my experience of living with depression and disability.
This book will guide not only disabled people but also their caregivers.A lot of valuable advice and
life lessons can be learned from this book. Her honest account of struggles and achievements makes her
story a source of inspiration for others, showing that anything is possible with a sense of humor and
determination. It's not just a tale of survival;it's a testament (to her strength and resolve.
32.Why does the author quote Martha's words in paragraph 2?
A.To reveal the poor service of the hospital.
B.To raise readers'awareness of the disabled.
C.To explain the cause of Martha's frustration.
D.To demonstrate one issue faced by the disabled.
33.What is the author's attitude towards using photos of seated models?
A.Unclear.
B.Dismissive.
C.Favorable.
D.Indifferent.
34.What does the author think of In Pursuit of "Normal"?
A.It is classic and moving.
B.It is boring but practical.
C.It is abstract but engaging.
D.It is inspiring and influential.
英语(四)第5页(共8页)
35.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To teach life lessons.
B.To recommend a book.
C.To provide inspiration for writers.
D.To emphasize the power of humor.

Many people think a good learner must keep steady focus.Yet new studies show the opposite.
When the mind gently drifts ()it can still absorb facts.More importantly,it can connect them in
fresh ways. This process, called inferential learning, lets us go beyond the given facts and reach new
conclusions.36
Mind-drifting gives the brain extra time.Suppose a student hears that plants bend towards light.
37 Neurons (repeat the pattern without effort. This mental replay strengthens memory
traces (and keeps the door open for later links.
Drifting invites remote associations.During a break, the same student may recall her kitchen
window, where the basil plant leans each morning. Two scenes-classroom and kitchen-meet in her
mind. From this mix she may infer that light direction, not just sunlight itself, guides plant growth.
38 However, focused study rarely allows such loose pairing of places and times.
A wandering mind tests rules in private. While the teacher moves to the next topic, the student's
thoughts may run a quick test:"If the light comes from below, will the plant still bend up?"39
These quiet experiments sharpen understanding and prepare the leamer for real tests later.
40 They forget that controlled wandering is not the same as chaos.Learners can set soft
borders:after 20 minutes of hard work, they allow five minutes of gentle drift. In this window, the mind
wanders but stays near the topic. The result is deeper insight without lost time.
A.Critics may say wandering wastes time.
B.Mind-wandering breaks cognitive barriers.
C.This random access generates innovative ideas.
D.No lab is needed;the brain runs a silent model.
E.The leap is small, but it is new knowledge built on her own.
F.A wandering mind,it turns out,is a quiet helper in this work.
G.While her eyes look out of the window, her brain keeps the idea alive.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would be assigned to write a science-fiction novel
one day.But then,in the afternoon,Mr Tian,our dearest Chinese teacher,"broke the news"to us in
his typically soft-spoken voice with his eyes shining with excitement and anticipation. To say I was
astonished would be an understatement.I was thunderstruck."A science-fiction novel?Really?"
The final bell's echo (still hung in the air as classmates burst into excited discussion around
me.Xie Jun waved his arms like a conductor,declaring he'd build a time-travel watch.Dong Mei's
laughter filled the air as she described talking dinosaurs on a far-away planet.Their words buzzed in my
ears like bees.I held on to my desk,my mind a perfect blank page.
In the evening,I paced in front of the art building, glancing at the vast and empty sports field
deserted by sports fans. With eyebrows wrinkled in frustration,I pulled my hair and searched my mind
in vain for a single idea for this assignment.I felt like the poor old man who had gone 84 days without
catching a single fish, drifting with the current in the deep waters of the Gulf Stream, dehydrated
and desperate.Come on!I did not wish for an 18-foot-long giant swordfish. All I was praying for
was an encouraging bite at the bait (to give me some inspiration!I didn't know why,but all the
science fiction I had read seemed to have fled from my head, leaving just one sentence echoing in the
wilderness of my mind,"My right brain has nothing left;my left brain has nothing right."
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Suddenly an idea flashed across my mind.
