In line with longstanding initiatives to
expand its green spaces,New York City is
planting tens of thousands of trees each year.
They provide shade,lower surface temperatures,
absorb a surprising amount of airborne carbon,
remove tiny pollutants,and provide wildlife
habitat along with just plain beauty.
Something could go wrong,though,according
to a new study.Oaks and sweetgums,which
currently account for a majority of the city's
trees, produce huge amounts of a chemical
substance called isoprene.Harmless by itself,
isoprene interacts rapidly with polluting nitrogen
oxides released by vehicles, buildings and industry
to form ground-level ozone(臭氧)一a major factor
in many breathing problems.
The research, carried out by scientists at
the Columbia Climate School and other institutions,
found that if the city maintains past species
patterns in new plantings, isoprene production in
Manhattan in coming decades will go up by
about 140%,and resulting summer ozone levels
as much as 30%.
"We're all for planting more trees. They
bring so many good things,"said study
coauthor Roisin Commane."But if we're not
careful,we could make air quality worse.
The Parks Department is not oblivious to
the issue.A study carried out by some of its
researchers several years ago concluded that city
trees did release isoprene."We didn't make a
big deal of that,"said Novem Auyeung,a Parks
Department senior scientist.She said trees
should not be viewed as the enemy."We could
plant any trees we want to,if we just rethink
our car-centric lifestyle,"she said.
"We're not going to go cutting down any
big old oaks,"and neither will the department

Test B七选五
During your initial reading of material,do
you ever go back and reread sentences or
paragraphs? Is it because the material is too
difficult to comprehend on the first reading or
because you are asleep?1 You are napping
(or daydreaming.Halfway down the page
you realize that you have no idea what you have
read.2 Thus,you go back and reread,not
because you did not understand, but because you
were not paying attention. This type of rereading
is called regression.

Napping and daydreaming are habits caused
by lack of involvement with the material.Be
demanding on yourself and expect 100 percent
attention to the task.Engage your mind.
Visualize the incoming ideas, and relate the new
material to what you already know.3 If your
mind is truly occupied with the text, you will not
be able to think about Friday night or where to
go on Saturday.
Regression is a crutch(拐杖)that allows
you to make up for wasted time.First of all,
become aware of when and why you are
regressing.4 Say,"OK.I missed that
paragraph because I was thinking of something
else, but I'm going to keep on going and start
paying close attention.
5 Good readers who monitor their own
comprehension use it in the reading process.
However,regressing because your mind was
asleep is a waste of time.
A.Both are to blame.
B.Probably the latter is true.
C.Don't just read the words;think the ideas.
D.Spend a few minutes reading the material
aloud.
E.Your eyes were engaged, but your mind
was not.
F.Then, start denying yourself the right in
order to break the habit.

究暗示了什么?”。A项“它们影响其他树木的生长”;
Harmless by itself,isoprene
interacts rapidly with polluting nitrogen oxides...a
major factor in many breathing problems'”可知,异戊
Commane
"if the city maintains past species patterns in new
plantings,isoprene production in Manhattan in
coming decades will go up..,as much as30%”可知,
A项
“砍掉会产生异戊二烯的树”;B项“暂缓种树几十年”;
"A study carried out by some of its researchers...
oblivious
could plant any trees we want to,if we just rethink
Auyeung

B项中的“the latter'”指代文中的“because you
are asleep”。故选B。
2.E根据空前的“Halfway down the page you realize
that you have no idea what you have read”和空后的
“Thus,you go back and reread”
no idea what you have read”,又为下文的“not paying

与下文的“your mind is truly occupied with the text"”
承接上文,“Then”与上文的“First of all'”形成逻辑上
的递进关系,“denying yourself the right'”与下文的
“keep on going and stat paying close attention'"的具
理性,与下文的“Good readers....use it'”呼应,其中it
