Every year, millions of migratory birds (候鸟) fly long distances across the world, overcoming difficulties like storms and hunger to complete their journey. These birds are not only beautiful but also play a key role in nature, such as controlling insect populations, and connecting different habitats (栖息地) around the world. However, a 2024 report by the IUCN shows that 30% of migratory bird species have gone down in number and 15% have become endangered.
Migratory birds today face serious problems. Climate change is affecting their migration routes and resting places. For example, Arctic terns (北极燕鸥) fly from the north to the south of the Earth every year, but now ice melts earlier. They have less time to raise their young babies. At the same time, the wetlands, places for them to rest and eat during their journey, are being changed to cities and farms.
Illegal hunting is another danger. In some areas, birds are caught for their feathers, meat, or to be sold as pets. In 2023, a large illegal hunting group in Southeast Asia was found to have killed more than 10,000 migratory birds in just half a year.
Thankfully, people around the world are acting to protect these birds. The “Wings of Hope” campaign started in 2024 to inspire all people and organizations to protect migratory birds. Volunteers have built man-made wetlands and feeding stations along migration routes. In China, local groups run “bird watching stations” to watch over the birds. Scientists also use GPS trackers to study their migration routes in order to protect their habitats.
All living creatures share the same Earth. Migratory birds remind us how beautiful and fragile (脆弱的) our planet is. Protecting them is not just about saving birds; it is about keeping the Earth healthy for our children.
36. How does the writer introduce the topic in Paragraph 1?
A. By using a famous saying. B. By asking questions.
C. By presenting numbers. D. By showing opinions.
37. What problem do Arctic terns face because of climate change?
A. They only have places for resting.
B. They don’t have enough time to care for babies.
C. Their GPS trackers often stop working in cold areas.
D. They are easily caught by illegal hunters.
38. Why are migratory birds caught in some areas?
A. To protect them from natural enemies. B. To study their migration routes.
C. To increase their population in local areas. D. To get their meat, feathers, or to sell them as pets.
39. What is the structure of the passage?
A. ①/②③④/⑤ B. ①②③④/⑤ C. ①/②③/④⑤ D. ①②/③④/⑤
40. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. 15% of migratory bird species have disappeared completely.
B. The “Wings of Hope” campaign aims to protect migratory birds.
C. Wetlands are destroyed mainly because of climate change.

How do people think differently? This has always been unusual. To search for an answer, a scientist named J. P. Guilford started a study of creativity, known as the nine-dot puzzle. He asked the participants (参与者) to connect all nine dots using only four straight lines, without lifting (抬起) their pencils from the paper. Most participants drew lines within the square they imagined. Only 20 percent succeeded in breaking out of the square and continuing their lines in the white space around the dots, while the rest of them were blinded by the boundaries (边界) of the square.
Guilford then drew a conclusion: creativity needs you to go outside the box. The idea was widely spread soon. It was so popular that few thought of checking the facts.
To make sure that Guilford’s study was correct, one research team did another experiment. They divided participants into two groups. The first group was given the same instructions (指示) as the participants in Guilford’s experiment. The second group was told to draw the lines outside the imagined box. Guess what? Only a little more than 20 percent solved the puzzle, which is no big difference from the result of Guilford’s experiment.
Let’s look a little more closely at the surprising result. Solving this problem requires people to think outside the box. However, the clear instructions to “think outside the box” do not help participants improve their performance. The widely spread idea that out-of-the-box thinking makes people more creative can be dangerous. After all, with one simple experiment, researchers had proved that the connection between thinking outside the box and creativity was a misunderstanding.
41. The nine-dot puzzle study is to find out ________.
A. how unusual people are B. how people do things in real life
C. what knowledge people have learned D. how people think in different ways
42. Which of the following patterns can solve the nine-dot puzzle?
A. B. C. D.
43. How many participants successfully worked out the nine-dot puzzle in J. P. Guilford’s experiment?
A. 20%. B. 50%. C. 80%. D. 100%.
44. From the passage, we can learn that ________.
A. clear instructions influence how people solve problems
B. fewer people performed better with the clear instructions
C. boundaries sometimes make people think less creatively
D. the methods of nine-dot puzzle study need to be improved
45. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Puzzle Solving: A Key to Creativity B. Thinking Outside the Box: A Misleading Idea
C. Nine-Dot Puzzle: A Magic Test D. Creative Thinking: An Unusual Topic

【答案】41. D 42. B 43. A 44. C 45. B

根据文章第一段“How do people think differently? This has always been unusual. To search an answer, a scientist named J. P. Guilford started a study of creativity, known as the nine-dot puzzle.”可知,吉尔福特开展九点谜题研究是为了探究人们如何以不同方式思考。
【42题详解】
根据文章第一段“connect all nine dots using only four straight lines, without lifting their pencils from the paper”以及“Only 20 percent succeeded in breaking out of the square and continuing their lines in the white space around the dots”可知,九点谜题的正确解法需要满足用四条直线、不抬笔连接所有点,且线条突破九个点组成的正方形边界、延伸到点周围空白区域的要求,B选项的图案符合该解法要求。
【43题详解】
根据文章第一段“Only 20 percent succeeded in breaking out of the square and continuing their lines in the white space around the dots”可知,J.P.吉尔福特的实验中仅有20%的参与者成功解开九点谜题。
【44题详解】
根据文章第一段“while the rest of them were blinded by the boundaries of the square”可知,多数参与者因被想象出的正方形边界限制思维而未能解开谜题,由此可推知边界有时会降低人们的创造性思维。
