What is a barrier? It usually refers to an obstacle or a difficulty that prevents you from achieving some-
thing. Whether it was in your past, or you're presently facing one, you have to resolve it. While many people
avoid barriers, deny their existence or let barriers control them, what stand you take on barriers will define
the outcome of whether you rise from the challenge, or remain stuck in it. Here are some more great things
to love about barriers.
First of all, barriers give you motivations. Sometimes barriers can reset your goals. You might be faced
with setbacks or difficulties, and you're forced to rethink and reexamine your path. As a consequence, you
may end up focusing on something new and exciting. Or, you may concentrate on something that you oth-
第1讲 描述运动的基本概念
erwise wouldn't have if not for the particular setback. By having to overcome an obstacle, you'll be fulfilling
a purpose, rather than just going through the motions.
Also, barriers prepare you for the unexpected. They serve as guides to where to go next. Even though
barriers can bring out many negative emotions in us, such as frustration, anger, or sadness, it's important to
realize that they don't stop you from reaching your intended goals. Instead, they, in a way, give you time to
stop and think if perhaps there is a new and better path to take and what you can prepare for what will hap-
pen along the way. Evidently, barriers shift your perspective.
Barriers, more often than not, are unavoidable. Life will never stop throwing you new barriers. So, the
best thing to do is know how to better see and ________ these obstacles, and transform them into opportuni-
ties for self-improvement. The more you're able to see barriers as being an advantage to your life, the better
you'll be at managing them.

The most important element of emotional maturity is taking responsibility for your own emotions and
actions. It means neither blaming yourself for what you cannot control nor losing emotional balance. 1
Here are some practical ways to develop emotional maturity in daily life.
Admit mistakes when you are wrong.
Emotionally mature people do not blame others for their own mistakes. They are responsible for their
actions, learn from mistakes, and accept feedback objectively. 2 Often, they will just admit them, apol-
ogize, and struggle to improve themselves.
第1讲 描述运动的基本概念
3
Emotionally mature people understand their emotional needs. It is important to take care of others' feel-
ings but it does not mean they should totally abandon their own feelings. The key is to stay balanced and to
attend to their own emotional needs when it is necessary. If a person does not respect his own feelings, it is
easy for him to be influenced by others and become miserable.
Don't play the victim.
4 Whenever they suffer a setback(挫折) in life, they view it as their own responsibility to improve
themselves. They trust that every challenge exists to strengthen them whatever happens in life.
Define and set boundaries.
第1讲 描述运动的基本概念
Emotionally mature people understand their standpoint. They know what they want in life and they also
make a conscious decision on the things that they do not want. When things beyond their boundaries hap-
pen, they can detect them right away, deal with them accordingly and won't let them destroy their self-es-
teem. 5
