The painting is the most expensive artwork ever sold that was created by a human-like robot. The painting is called “AI God: Portrait of Alan Turing”. Mr Turing was an English math genius who came up with many of the important ideas that led to modern-day computers. He was an important part of the early thinking about artificial intelligence(AI). The painting is the work of Ai-Da, a human-like robot that’s able to paint and take part in conversations. The idea for Ai-Da came from Aidan Meller, an Englishman who used to run an art gallery. He worked with a group of nearly 30 people to build and program Ai-Da. Ai-Da’s name is clever—the first part of the name is “AI”. But Ai-Da was also named after Ada Lovelace, who is considered the world’s first computer programmer. Ai-Da is designed to look like a woman with short black hair. Cameras allow the robot to “see”. Ai-Da paints with a robotic arm which can hold a pen or paintbrush. Using AI tools similar to ChatGPT, Ai-Da is also able to talk. This allows the robot to do interviews and answer questions about its artwork. Mr Meller says Ai-Da doesn’t just paint whatever it’s told to paint. Before the robot begins painting, it talks with its human helpers about what the subject should be. Before the painting of Mr Turing, Mr Meller says they discussed the idea of using “AI for good”. Ai-Da chose Mr Turing as a subject because of the important part he played in developing computers and AI. Ai-Da based its painting on a picture of Mr Turing it had “seen” with its cameras. Ai-Da then used its painting arm to make 15 paintings of different parts of Mr Turing’s face. Each painting took six to eight hours to complete. These paintings are about the size of two pieces of notebook paper laid side by side. That’s the largest Ai-Da’s arm can manage. Finally, Ai-Da chose three of the paintings and combined them into the final painting. Once the painting was finished, a special 3D printer was used to expand Ai-Da’s small artwork into the full-sized painting. ( )1. Who came up with the idea of using a robot to paint? A. Ai-Da. B. I can’t remember which side is my right and which is my left. I know this makes no sense. After all, I have no problem telling the difference between other things. I know up from down. I know black from white. I know forks from spoons. And yet, I do not know left from right. My brain is not wired that way. This is true for many dyslexics, and I suspect multimodal large language models (MLLMs) may be dyslexic too. As a kid with dyslexia, school was very hard for me. For example, we humans created two lowercase (小写字体的) letters in the English alphabet — “b” and “d” — that are only different because one points left and one points right. For decades, I could not tell the difference. This is a very common problem among dyslexics. The same is true for telling time on traditional clock faces — it only makes sense if you know the difference between clockwise and counterclockwise. These challenges don’t end in elementary school. I still remember getting a problem wrong in a physics class at Stanford because I applied the “right-hand rule” with my left hand. Dyslexia has nothing to do with focus or intelligence — your brain just works differently from the people who created the cultural conventions we use in symbolic languages, mathematics, and many branches of science. I surely know what’s going on. It all relates to the “mind’s eye.” By this, I mean the way I visualize things inside my mind and store spatial (空间的) elements in memory. When I recall things in my mind (objects, environments, images, or text), I don’t visualize them from a fixed first-person perspective. I think about them from all directions at once. This brings me back to MLLMs that process and interpret images and videos. These models are remarkable. They can match or exceed human performance on countless tasks, for example, diagnosing cancers from visual slides better than any human. And yet, a recent study found a surprising result: Nowadays all major MLLMs have troubles in telling time on analog clocks According to the study, GPT-4.0 was only able to correctly read clock faces 8% of the time. Claude-3-5-sonnet was worse at 6%. Gemini 2.0 was the best, but still at only 20%. These numbers are surprisingly low, especially when you consider that these AI models can perform so well in other contexts. This is surprisingly similar to dyslexia in humans, not just in the simple artifacts that cause problems like clocks, but in the contradictory mix of strengths and weaknesses that enables a person like me to earn a PhD (博士学位) and work successfully as a computer scientist and engineer, and yet still fail the “turn left here” test. 1.The phrase “mind’s eye” (paragraph 4) refers to ______. A.literal visual perception through biological eyes B.a medical device used to treat dyslexia C.the brain’s ability to form and store mental images D.a metaphor for intelligence quotient (IQ) 2.What does the underlined word “interpret” in Paragraph 5 mean? A.Learn. B.Understand. C.Explain. D.Translate. 3.Why do MLLMs struggle to read analog clocks accurately, according to the passage? A.Their cognitive process of spatial information is similar to that of dyslexic humans. B.They were primarily trained on digital clocks, leaving analog clock recognition underdeveloped. C.Clock faces require understanding of cultural conventions, which AI lacks compared to humans. D.Their visual recognition systems focus more on object detection like cancer diagnosis than directional interpretation. 4.Why does the author emphasize that he failed a physics task due to left-right confusion yet ultimately earned a PhD? A.To argue that universities should lower some standards for dyslexic students B.To suggest AI could make up for human limitations in scientific research. C.To reflect that physics is uniquely difficult for people with spatial processing differences. D.To highlight that dyslexia’s problems are particular rather than reflective of overall intellectual ability. 5.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A.The Complete Guide to Dyslexia Treatments B.When Machines Mirror Human Learning disabilities C.Are Large Language Models Dyslexic? 1.第四段中“By this, I mean the way I visualize things inside my mind and store spatial ( 空间的) elements in memory.” 2.第五段第一句“This brings me back to MLLMs that process and interpret images and videos.” 3.第五段“Nowadays all major MLLMs have troubles in telling time on analog clocks (模拟时钟).”提到了MLLMs在阅读模拟时钟时表现极差,最后一段“This is surprisingly similar to dyslexia in humans, not just in the simple artifacts that cause problems like clocks, but in the contradictory mix of strengths and weaknesses...” 4.第四段第一句“Dyslexia has nothing to do with focus or intelligence”表明阅读障碍与专注力或智力毫无关系,最后一段“...but in the contradictory mix of strengths and weaknesses that enables a person like me to earn a PhD (博士学位) and work successfully as a computer scientist and engineer, and yet still fail the “turn left here” test.” Kouji is a type of Chinese folk art. A. Ai-Da. B. Alan Turing. C. Aidan Meller. D. Ada Lovelace. ( )2. What do you know about Mr Turing? A. He taught Ai-Da how to paint. B. He was good at painting himself. C. He invented the robot named Ai-Da. D. He played an important role in computers and AI. ( )3. How does the writer end the passage? A. By offering the price of the painting. B. By describing the size of the painting. C. By showing the process of robot painting. D. By introducing the way of printing the painting. ( )4. In which section of a magazine can you read the text? A. Health and sport. B. They discovered “people under the tree” wall paintings. They dated back to the Tang Dynasty in a tomb in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. The tomb is the latest among the dated Tang Dynasty burial chambers (墓室) decorated (装饰) with “people under the tree” wall paintings found in Taiyuan. The discovery really helps us study “people under the tree” artworks. The artistic style was very popular during the Tang Dynasty. In the main room of the tomb, the paintings on the southern part of the east wall show a life situation. On the left, the painting shows a man pushing a stone mill (磨) while a woman is working on the mill. On the far right, the painting shows a man cooking food. He has an iron pan in front of him. The pan sits atop a fire. The lower left shows a man stepping on a pestle (杵), a rice pounding tool made of wood and stone, with a bamboo basket next to the pestle. On the right side of the painting, a woman is getting water from a well using something for raising and lowering the bucket (桶) in a well. Finally, on the far right, the painting ends with the picture of a stove and a large steaming pot on it. A bit further in the painting, we can still see mountains and trees. And in the near distance, a woman in a long skirt is holding a box with both hands. Behind her, we can see a foreign trader in a yellow robe (长袍), holding the reins (缰绳) of the camels and horses in his hands. Long Zhen, a famous expert, explained that the tomb lies on the western side of the mountain facing Taiyuan. The area is an important burial area in the west of the city. Hundreds of tombs in Tang Dynasty have been discovered there. 1.Why is the discovery of the wall paintings very helpful? 2.What do the paintings on the southern part of the east wall show? 3.What is the pestle used for according to the passage? 4.Who can we see behind the woman in a long skirt in the painting? 5.What can we learn from the Tang Dynasty wall paintings? 1. D.Why Schools Must Adapt to Dyslexic Students Kouji is a type of Chinese folk art. Performers use their mouths, teeth, tongues, throats, noses and so on to copy different sounds in n 1 and daily life. Kouji has a long history. Years ago, people copied the sounds of birds in o 2 to catch them. They also copied frightening sounds to k 3 dangerous animals off. This is the earliest form of human l 4 and the predecessor (前身) of Kouji , but not the real Kouji. Kouji didn’t become a performance (表演) art u 5 the Song Dynasty. The shows such as Xuexiangtan and Bainiaoming were possibly Kouji performances. Besides, the barking of dogs and the crowing of roosters in Song and Yuan operas were b 6 to be played by Kouji performers behind the stage. In the Qing Dynasty, Kouji developed into a new form where performers could tell whole stories by m 7 several different sounds. A famous performer named “Hundred-Bird Zhang” was especially f 8 for his wonderful bird sounds—he copied the calls of over a hundred bird species so perfectly that even real birds would sometimes reply to his mimicry. Since the end of the 20th century, Kouji has been widely used in different kinds of art performances and seen as a s 9 art form. It is often connected with story-telling or shows d 10 performances. In 2011, Kouji was included in the third batch of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China.
