二、阅读理解
(扬州市梅岭中学九上月考)Autumn and winter are cold and flu (流感) seasons. Will the old advice about dressing warmly help prevent a cold, or if you get sick, should you follow the old saying, "feed a cold and starve (挨饿) a fever"? And what about that fever (发烧)? Should you take medicine to reduce your temperature, or is it better to let the body treat the fever itself? Everyone seems to have an answer. But is popular wisdom valuable?
Doctor Nelson knows a lot about cold and flu seasons. Nelson says research may be just starting to provide proofs (证明) for longheld beliefs. For example, scientists for years were against the idea that getting cold and wet might cause colds or flu. But recent studies have shown that cold temperatures cause stress on the body, and that stress can create something more likely to lead to viruses. So maybe it is really important to wear warmly before going outside.
And what about feeding a cold and starving a fever? Nelson says if you have a cold and are hungry, you should eat. But a fever, especially a high one, suggests a more serious problem. He says people are usually not hungry when they have a high fever. Eating might even make a person sick. But drinking enough water is important. A fever easily makes the body lose water.
Finally, when should you treat a fever? Nelson says a fever should be treated if it stays at 40℃ or above for a day or more. A high temperature can damage (破坏) brain cells (细胞). The doctor also believes in treating a fever if it prevents a person from sleeping.
Medicine like aspirin, for example, can be used to reduce pain and fever. But aspirin should not be given to children because it can cause serious problems.
1.We can learn from the passage that Doctor Nelson______.
A.doesn't believe in the old advice about preventing colds
B.is now trying his best to provide proofs for longheld beliefs
C.thinks a fever needn't be treated even if it prevents someone from sleeping
D.thinks you needn't go to a doctor immediately if you have a temperature of 40℃
2.According to Doctor Nelson, if someone catches a fever, he should______.
A. take a bath in cold water B. drink enough water C. try to eat something D. take some exercise outside
3.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Why people should eat when having a cold.
B. When people should treat a fever.
C. What the medicine, aspirin, is used for.
D. Whether the old advice about preventing a cold is valuable.
4.The passage suggests that______.
A. aspirin can damage brain cells if an adult takes too much of it
B. the idea that getting cold can cause flu was proved true years ago
C. it is easier for people to catch colds when their bodies are stressed
D. some old advice about preventing colds isn't important
【答案】DBAC
【解析】
1.A 错误:文中说明新研究佐证保暖的旧建议,Nelson 没有否定旧建议。 B 错误:原文 “research may be just starting to provide proofs”,是研究,不是 Nelson 本人尽力去证明。 C 错误:原文 “The doctor also believes in treating a fever if it prevents a person from sleeping.”,如果发烧妨碍睡眠是要治疗的。 D 正确:40℃及以上持续一天以上才需要处理,因此刚到 40℃不必立刻就医。
2.B 正确:原文 “But drinking enough water is important. A fever easily makes the body lose water.”
4.C 正确:原文 “cold temperatures cause stress on the body, and that stress can create something more likely to lead to viruses.”
It was Saturday again. Grace and Karendisliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell them apart sometimes.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Grace had to attend the art lesson and Karen had to attend her ballet lesson. “How I wish I could do something different today,” said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Grace and Karen at the same time. “How would you like to be me for a day?” they asked each other. It seemed like a wonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Grace put on Karen's ballet dress while Karen put Grace's brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the art lesson started, Karen was lost. Unlike Grace, Karen was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Karen didn't dare to hand in her work.
Meanwhile, Grace was struggling in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, “Karen, you should remember the basic steps. You can't rely on copying what others are doing.”
When Karen and Grace got home, they were tired out. They decided that they would never try to be someone else they were not. It seemed that the grass was not always greener on the other side.
1.Did Grace and Karen like Saturdays?
2.When did the twins get up on Saturdays?
3.What was the twins' plan when they decided to do something different?

5.What does the underlined part “the grass was not always greener on the other side” at the end of the story try to tell us?

3. To be each other for a day.

The drum has existed in Chinese civilization for thousands of years and has a deep spiritual meaning which is more than a kind of musical instrument. Confucius regarded the “Drum Dance” highly. It is also the origin of the Chinese phrase “guwu” which means “embolden(使有胆量)” in English.
The drum was mentioned in Chinese history in the Pottery Age. The Zhou Dynasty set up the drum music institution that was responsible for the management of officers known as “drum men” and developed a complete drum music system. From then on, drums came to be used in ancient Chinese practices such as sacrifice (祭祀), military, labour and other activities.
In ancient China, agriculture was the main form of production and drums were considered indispensable (不可或缺的) for a good harvest. Since the sound of drums echoes that of thunder, it was believed that playing the drums could attract rain. So the instrument was used to pray for good weather and to “communicate” with them.
Drums also played a part in the war. Because of a strong resonance effect (共振作用), the drum’s sound could go very far while increasing fear in the heart of the enemies. So the drum was used as a military booster for a long time.
In the Tang and Song dynasties, the society was developing fast and drums were widely used. The national band, drama, folk art, song and dance, boat racing, lion dance, festival gathering and labour competition were all together with the beats of drums. The sound of drums became synonymous(同义的) with celebrations, filling hearts with joy.
Different types of Chinese drums exist today. For example, “Taiping Drum” is used to express hope for peace and prosperity (繁荣) while “Ansai Waist Drum” is meant to show the spirit of the Loess Plateau (黄土高原) and the heroic character of farmers in Northwest China. Kaifeng has “Pan Drum”, and Luochuan of Shaanxi Province is known for its “Bie Drum”. There are also some cheerful and timehonoured drum dances such as “Fengyang Flower Drum” in Anhui Province and “Fishing Basket Flower Drum” in Jiangsu Province.
In a word, drum culture reflects the stability(安定) and prosperity of Chinese society. For thousands of years, Chinese people have always been expecting peace and satisfaction.

C. What the medicine, aspirin, is used for.

4.Why did the ballet teacher become impatient?
5.What does the underlined part “the grass was not always greener on the other side” at the end of the story try to tell us?
