I play for a living. I love doing it,” Patterson tells CNBC. But Patterson's road to success didn't happen overnight. He started writing as a parergon(职外工 作) and he faced a lot of rejections before getting his first book published. Patterson grew up in Newburgh, New York with an insurance salesman father and a schoolteacher mother. “Despite having dreams of being a writer, the idea always seemed ____________,” Patterson says. “But after reading books by James Joyce, they really turned me on to reading, and then I started writing,” he adds. After college, Patterson got his first job as a junior copywriter at the advertising agency J. Walter presumptuous Thompson. While climbing the corporate ladder, Patterson wrote his first book, The Thomas Berryman Num- ber in the mid-1970s. “The book got turned down by 26 publishers,” Patterson says. But after it was final- ly published in 1976, then it won the Edgar Allan Poe Awards for the Best First Novel. The Edgar Allan Poe Awards, which are named after Edgar Allan Poe, honor the best writers in mystery fiction and non-fiction. Despite publishing his first book at his twenties, Patterson didn't have a best-seller until he was 40. “It wasn't like all of a sudden,” he says. In fact, Patterson kept his day job for decades and got promoted to CEO of J. Walter Thompson in 1988. Patterson says during that time, he would read well over 100 books a year to help spark his creativity. “I have a huge imagination and I'm constantly asking, ‘What about this? What about that?’” he says. Despite his success, Patterson says he doesn't like to give advice on writing. But he credits his own suc- cess to his work ethic and passion. “I also don't take myself too seriously,” he says. “Yeah, I sell a lot of 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 books, but so what?” 24.What do we know about James Patterson? During sleep, brain cells fire in rhythmic patterns. When two brain areas synchronize(同步) their firing patterns, they are able to communicate. During non-rapid eye movement sleep, the hippocampus(海马结构), found deep in the brain, synchronizes its activity with the prefrontal cortex, which lies just behind the fore- head. This helps transform memories from the day into memories that can last a lifetime. Dr. Itzhak Fried at the University of California and his team gathered 18 epilepsy patients who already had electrodes(电极) in their brains for medical evaluation. This offered the scientists a way to both monitor and change a person's brain rhythms. They used a “celebrity pet” test in which participants were shown 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 images matching a particular celebrity with a specific animal. They were expected to remember which ani- mal went with which celebrity. Patients saw the images before going to bed. In order to assess how the patients' memory during sleep was enhanced, the researchers gave some of them tiny electrical stimulation through the wires in their brains while they were sleeping. In patients who got the stimulation, rhythms in the two brain areas became more synchronized. And when they woke up, they scored higher in the test. The experiment was based on decades of research done by scientists, including Dr. György Buzsáki, a neuroscientist at New York University. But changing rhythms in healthy people's brains might not improve their memory, he says, because those communication channels are already in superb condition. The epilepsy patients may have improved because they started out with sleep and memory problems caused by both the disorder and the drugs used to treat it. Even so, he says, the approach has the potential to help millions of people with damaged memory. And changing brain rhythms probably plays an important part in many other problems. “It is not specific to memory. It is doing a lot of other things,” Buzsáki says, “like regulating moods and emotion.” 28.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A.The basis behind the research. B.The forming process of memories. C.The analysis of a patient's sleeping patterns. D.The advantages of studies in brain activities. 29.Why was electrical stimulation delivered to some patients at night? A.To observe non-rapid eye movement sleep. B.To compare their medical examination results. C.To monitor how their brain areas synchronized. D.To see if there was improvement in their memory. 30.What can be expected of the approach used in the research? A.It may help people with memory problems. B.It can help reduce epilepsy patients' drug use. C.It will strengthen healthy people's memory. D.It may enhance people's communication skills. 31.According to the passage, what's Buzsáki's attitude toward Fried's approach? A.Disapproving. B.Favorable. C.Negative. D.Unconcerned. 故选A。 根据最后一段中的“the approach has the potential to help millions of people with damaged memory”可知,这种方法有可能帮助数百万记忆受损的人。故选A。 D A large amount of evidence suggests that children whose parents are involved in their academic achievements are more likely to be higher-achieving students than those whose parents are not involved in their academic lives. Parental involvement in children's school achievements can also decrease the likeli- hood that these children will use drugs, be suspended from school or engage in violent behavior. Parental involvement in the academic achievements of their children increases achievement levels. Par- ents' expectations of their children's academic achievements, a structured household, and a shared respect and appreciation for learning all contribute to positive achievement outcomes in children. Additionally, it is more costly for schools to provide resources to increase students' academic achievements than it is for par- ents to be more involved at home. Parents' involvement in children's academic achievements conveys the message that those accomplish- ments matter, which positively affects a child's sense of self-worth. Parents' self-respect is also increased as they become more involved in the academic achievements of their children. Primary school students whose parents are actively involved in their educational lives have fewer be- havioral issues in school. Parental involvement increases students' enjoyment in academic activities, too, which can contribute to better behavioral outcomes. Students might also tend to behave better if they know their parents will visit the school if they have any behavioral issues. Children whose parents are involved in their academic achievements will have better health as adults, will be more likely to receive post-secondary education and will likely be better parents than others whose parents are not involved in their academic achievements. Parents who are involved in children's academic achievements model this behavior for their children, which teaches them to value education, and ultimately 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 influences these children to do this behavior as parents. 32.What can we infer about parental involvement from Paragraph 2? A.It's a replacement for school activities. B.It promotes the home-school relationship. C.It increases parents' expectations of their children. D.It's a cheaper way to improve students' performance. 33.What do children think of parental involvement in their study? A.It means parents are making an unnecessary move. B.It can force them to make efforts. C.It may confuse the responsibilities of teachers and parents. D.It shows that the family attach great importance to their study. 34.Which of the following is the best description of parental involvement? A.A lifelong effect on children. B.Alternative care from the old. C.A teaching method of public schools. D.A family tradition passed down through generations. 35.Who might be the target readers of this text? A.Teachers. B.Students. C.Parents. D.Sociologists. 根据第三段中的“Parents' involvement in children's academic achievements conveys the message that those accomplishments matter, which positively affects a child's sense of self- worth.” 故选A。 We all have a dream and amazing potential(潜力) to achieve it. So how can we do this? Below are four simple steps that you can take to realize your dream. Realizing your dream begins with making a choice. This is like planting a seed(种子).Without it, noth- ing can grow. While society frequently tells us what success should look like, real happiness comes from lis- tening to your inner voice. 36 For example, ask yourself “What activities really win my heart?” or “What problems do I feel passionate about solving?” Such honest explorations help you make a right de- cision. Knowledge alone isn't enough—action brings dreams to life. Like a traveler learning the route by walk- ing it, you'll discover more about your goals as you move forward. 37 If you dream of writing a book, write one page today. Action reduces fear and builds confidence. Life lessons come through doing, not just 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 thinking. 38 Doubts will arise during the journey and even after reaching your goals: You might question whether you're on the right path or if your achievements truly matter. During such moments, reconnect with your original purpose. Faith isn't about having no fears. 39 Whether starting or succeeding, believing in your choice makes the difference between a life lived fully and one filled with regrets. Challenges are unavoidable, but persistence(坚持) turns effort into good results. Great things—learning a skill, building a business, or creating art—all demand time. When progress feels slow, remind yourself that every step counts. History shows that people who refuse to quit eventually succeed. 40 A.Start with small steps. B.Action reveals true possibilities. C.Those who succeed choose actively. D.It's about continuing in spite of them. E.Some simple self-questioning can help. F.To achieve your dreams, you must keep the faith. G.Achievements come to those who overcome difficulties. 36.______ 37.______ 38.______ 39.______ 40.______ G      D      F      A      E 故选A。 38. 39.D项“它是指尽管有恐惧,仍然继续前进”承接前文“Faith isn't about having no fears.”,进一步阐述 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 了信念的真正内涵,且“It”指代前文“Faith”,“continuing in spite of them”明确“信念是面对恐惧 不放弃”,逻辑衔接,语意流畅。故选D。 40. Tom's academic journey hit a rough patch when he unexpectedly 41 . Every time he saw his test scores, his heart 42 with frustration. Being the top student admired by classmates seemed 43 his wildest dreams. One day, noticing Tom's low spirits, instead of 44 him, his literature teacher, Ms. White, an- nounced a class 45 , “Humor not only lifts your mood, but 46 your mind. Share how you laugh your way through tough stuff.” Immediately, one student stood up and shared his notes he'd stick on his textbooks. Next to a confusing physical law, he wrote, “Let's make a deal—I'll read you twice, you'll make 47 once!” When he messed up on a math problem for the fifth time, he'd tap the paper saying, “You' 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 re really testing my patience.” The class 48 into laughter and Ms. White grinned, “That's how you outsmart stress!” From that day on, Tom turned every study roadblock into a joke. When he stayed up late memorizing vocabulary, he'd joke, “These words are playing hide-and-seek—I'll win by bribing(贿赂) them with 49 !” When he forgot a chemistry formula, he'd whisper, “Come on, buddy. You were right there with me last night— don't 50 me now!” In this way, his spirits always 51 fast. Months later, Tom made 52 progress —jumping from the bottom half of the class to the top 10. Humor had a 53 influence. Tom finally concluded: humor can't 54 you have success but can give you the courage to 55 when things feel tough—it's about turning “I can't” into “This is ridiculous, but let's try again”. 41.A.fell behind B.turned around C.gave up D.turned down 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 42.A.galloping B.raising C.sinking D.burning 43.A.against B.beyond C.within D.through 44.A.flattering B.appreciating C.informing D.criticizing 45.A.assignment B.enthusiasm C.companionship D.association 46.A.destroys B.cracks C.defeats D.sharpens 47.A.progress B.sense C.use D.comment 48.A.burst B.crashed C.boosted D.bumped 49.A.money B.gifts C.coffee D.care 50.A.track B.entertain C.desert D.seize 51.A.reduced B.recovered C.remained D.required 52.A.remarkable B.emotive C.rare D.intense 53.A.gentle B.amusing C.powerful D.witty 54.A.prevent B.ensure C.replace D.aim 55.A.back down B.walk away C.call off D.carry on 沮丧,挫败    2.lift one’s mood 改善心情;振奋精神    3.make a deal 达成协 议    4.mess up 搞砸,出错    5.tap v. 障碍 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 41.A 由上文“hit a rough patch”及下文“jumping from the bottom half of the class to the top 10” 可知,汤姆后来从班级成绩排名后半段跻身前十,说明他之前意外落后了(fell behind)。turn around 转身; 好转;give up放弃;turn down 拒绝;调低。 against反对;within在…… 45.A    由后文“Share how you laugh your way through tough stuff.” 46.D 由“not only lifts your mood, but”可知,此处需体现幽默的积极作用,sharpen one's mind表示 “让思维更敏锐”,符合逻辑。 50.C 由“Come on, buddy. It's just beyond words. We now have the 64 (fami- ly) of fish that are found nowhere else in the world except in the Southern Ocean. He happened to catch a fox. But the fox said he had just been appointed by God to be head of all animals. “Who are you trying to fool?” said the tiger. “Why not walk behind me and see how frightened the other animals will be when they see me?” said the fox. The tiger agreed. So he went along with the fox to find out whether it was true. All the animals really ran away the moment they saw the fox followed by the tiger indeed. How stupid the tiger was! He didn't even realize that it was him that all the other animals were really afraid of. I was an extremely shy third grader and didn't make friends easily. My teacher, Mr. Doocy, called my mother and explained that I hadn't spoken a single word in class, and we were more than halfway through the school year. Even as a third grader, I knew this was unusual. I watched admiringly the free interaction(互 动) of my classmates. Mom tried to excuse my behavior as something that I would outgrow. But Mr. Doocy would not agree. He asked Mom if I had something at home that I liked. He said he would arrange show-and-tell for the class if I brought it to school. Playing right into Mr. Doocy's hands, Mom told him about my cat that'd had a litter of kittens about three weeks earlier. I was crazy about those kittens. Bingo! Mr. Doocy suggested that I bring the kittens to school the next day. I supposed Mom was hop- ing to dissuade him when she explained that I would have to bring the mother cat along with the six kittens because they were too young to be separated from their mother. She probably thought this would put an end to the plan. But Mr. Doocy said that it was fine. I normally walked to school, but my mother drove me the next morning along with a big brown card- board box. I staggered toward the classroom under the heavy load. In no time, the chorus of kittens drew curious classmates to the mysterious box. Their eyes lit up in wonder when they caught sight of my tiny treasures. My little heart thumped (怦怦跳) against my chest as I felt myself swell with pride. I had never felt so important in my entire nine years of life! Mr. Doocy instructed me to sit on the steps outside the classroom so everyone could get a good look in- side the container. Soon, the school bell rang, but no one moved—not even Mr. Doocy. He allowed us to sit there until each student had a turn touching the kittens. “Can I hold one for a minute?” a little girl squealed with excitement. Then,Mr. Doocy accompanied me to the front of the classroom and waited for the students to sit down. One possible version: “Can I hold one for a minute?”a little girl squealed with excitement. Then all the other children gathered, begging to hold one of the kittens. “Yes,” I said, “but only for a minute. It will make them sick if they're passed around too much. And the momma cat won't be happy when she realizes her babies are missing.” Every single one of them held the kittens gently, flashing a bright smile. My heart was overflowing with joy. The only things in my mind were my little friends. Then, Mr. Doocy accompanied me to the front of the classroom and waited for the students to sit down. When everyone was silent, he glanced my way, nodding his approval, and I began to tell the students about the six tiny kittens and their mother. It never occurred to me that they were all staring at me or I was talking in front of the class. My heart swelled with pride and confidence that I could not have imagined before my 第1讲 描述运动的基本概念 sweet cats rescued me. For the rest of the day and the days that followed, I proudly sat among my classmates with a sense of worth and importance. Traditionally, a couple give each other flowers or fruit. but my wife prefers appliances. Although I had a job waiting for me there and I had met my new boss, I had to learn a new culture, make friends, and I also had to learn a new language. Despite the chAllenges, I was determined to make the most of the opportunity. Shortly after arriving, I kept a rescue dog that I named Molly. SHE helped me find my footing in the new country and catch me company. When I was hope sick, SHE was afraid of loud noise, and IT took time and effort to help her become more comfortable in a new environment. This taught me patients. I was determined to learn spanish. I took classes and practice the language by talking to the locals. As I slowly began to pick up the language, I realized that understanding the culture and the history was exciting.
