Where does our food come from?
Think
Focusing on culture
We eat every day. Have you ever wondered Where does our food come from? Let's explore more about how our food comes from farmers’ hard work.
1 Read two poems about farming
The peasants (II)
by Li Shen (772-846)
At noon they weed with hoes;
Their sweat drips on the soil.
Each bowl of rice, who knows?
Is the fruit of hard toil.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
The rice farmer
(author unknown)
The sun is setting low, the red sky a welcoming sight; The farmer stands silently in the fading light.
The fields are watered and planted, the buffaloes are fed; The only thing he thinks of now is finding home and bed. A gentle wind is whispering of hope and dreams of life;
Every grain of rice requires such effort and such strife.
Remember, when you sit and eat with family or friends, All the many hours he works, as his fields he tends
Notes
Around 12,000 years ago, people began to grow crops, and they also started raising farm animals. As a result, they were able to produce a lot more food than before. Thanks to farming, people could spend time on other things like inventions and leisure
activities, and this made advances in civilization possible.
The peasants (II)
by Li Shen (772-846)
At noon they weed with hoes;
Their sweat drips on the soil.
Each bowl of rice, who knows?
Is the fruit of hard toil.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
An analysis of the poem
1.Structure: It has four lines. The first two lines
describe farmers’ hard work in the fields. The last
two lines raise a question and show the main idea.
2. Rhyme: It uses a‑b‑a‑b rhyme. Words “hoes‑knows”
and “soil‑toil” rhyme. It sounds nice when read aloud.
3. Rhetoric: It uses a rhetorical question “who knows?”
to make readers think. It contrasts farmers’ sweat
with rice on our table. “Fruit” is a metaphor for the
result of hard work.
4. Theme: The poem shows great pity for farmers. It
tells us rice comes from hard work and we should
value food.
The rice farmer
(author unknown)
The sun is setting low, the red sky a welcoming sight;
The farmer stands silently in the fading light.
The fields are watered and planted, the buffaloes are fed;
The only thing he thinks of now is finding home and bed.
A gentle wind is whispering of hope and dreams of life;
Every grain of rice requires such effort and such strife.
Remember, when you sit and eat with family or friends,
All the many hours he works, as his fields he tends
An analysis of the poem
The pastoral beauty(田园诗意)of The Rice Farmer :Different from the sad feelings in Chinese poems, this English poem mainly describes the quiet and peaceful countryside at sunset. Images such as “buffaloes” and “fading light” show the farmer’s satisfaction after a day’s work when he is going home. Still, the poem reminds us “every grain requires effort” at the end. It shares the same feelings with Li Shen’s poem.
Both The Peasants (II) and The Rice Farmer are about farmers. They share the same idea: every grain of rice costs plenty of hard work, so we should value food. However, they are quite different in styles. The Peasants (II) by Li Shen describes farmers’ tiring work under the hot sun at noon. It shows great sympathy for farmers and uses a rhetorical question to warn readers directly. The tone of the poem is very serious.
By contrast, The Rice Farmer paints a quiet and beautiful picture of the countryside at sunset. It talks about the farmer returning home after work. It builds up the mood with scenery first and tells us its lesson at the end. Though their scenes and feelings are different, the two poems remind us to respect hard‑working farmers. The tone of “The rice farmer” is light and happy.

种稻人默默伫立在渐暗的光线中。
田地已灌溉、播种,水牛也已喂饱;

4 Discuss the questions below.
(1)What do the two poems have in common? What are the differences
between them?
Common points:
Both poems show farmers’ hard work. They teach us food is hard‑won and we should value food.
Differences: “The peasants” is shorter. The time in the poem is noon, the hottest time of the day. The farmers are still working hard, and their sweat is dripping onto the ground. The poet expresses pity for the farmers through describing the working scene. At the end of the poem, the poet further stresses that “each bowl of rice” comes from the farmers’ “hard toil”. The tone of the poem is very serious.
"The rice farmer“ is longer. The time in the poem is evening when the sun is setting. The farmer has finished a whole day's work and was walking
back home. Expressions like "the sun is setting low” “the red sky” “a
welcoming light” “A gentle wind is whispering hope and dreams of life” suggest the poet's positive attitude towards farming. The tone of “The rice farmer” is light and happy.
(2)What can you learn from the poems?
I learn that every grain comes from hard work. We should value food and never waste it. We need to show respect for working people.
