(本题10分)In 2010, while Brad Ryan described his previous adventures hiking and climbing a famous mountain, he learned that his grandmother Joy Ryan had never set eyes on a mountain, which was one of her lifelong regrets. That conversation stayed with him.
A few years later, Brad decided to take a weekend road trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and asked Grandma if she’d like to join him. Thankfully, his grandmother jumped at the chance. At 85, she saw her first mountain, climbed her first mountain and went camping for the first time.
While he knew that the fun might be ruined (毁灭) when he travelled with an elderly person, Brad quickly found that this wasn’t the case. In fact, it was quite the opposite. It made the experience of being in the great outdoors much richer because having to move more slowly meant he was able to appreciate everything in a more meaningful way.
The first trip planted a seed of joy inside Brad that had been missing, and he was excited to see how much Grandma had enjoyed the experience. To keep their adventure going, the pair made a plan to travel to the other 62 US National Parks together.
Such a challenge would be a huge achievement for most hikers, let alone an elderly woman with limited hiking experience, so they decided to take their time with it. It took them nearly eight years to do it. Brad said that the lens (镜头) through which Grandma was seeing the world was very different from most people of his age because she didn’t visit a site thinking, “Well, I’ll be back again,” so there was more presence.
After reaching their final stop, the National Park of American Samoa in the South Pacific, in 2023, they became closer than ever and eventually decided on trying to travel to every continent (大陆) in the world.

(本题10分)As birth order (出生顺序) is clearly one of the many reasons that affect development, we should pay much attention to it. Big brothers and sisters usually develop leadership early in life, mainly because of the responsibilities for younger children given to them by their parents. The danger is that if the older child takes that role to an extreme (极限), he or she can become an overbearing person who won’t listen to others because they think they are the leaders.
Studies of nearly 300 people have found that a person’s first child is usually the most strongly motivated towards achievement. This is mainly the result of parental expectations. Research also suggests that firstborn children generally become more conservative than other children because they receive most of the parental orders and rules. Used to caring for others, they are more likely to move towards such leadership professions as teaching and politics. Less social and flexible because they become accustomed in the very early years to acting alone, they may have difficulty making close friends.
By contrast, the researchers say later children are more likely to be more relaxed and sociable than the eldest child because their parents are more relaxed. However, later children are often less ambitious and may be uncomfortable making decisions for others, and will seek work that fits their needs. This may help explain why younger children are easy to like jobs such as music, art, and writing. Later children may be good sellers because persuasion (劝说) may have been the only tool they had to deal with older children. Younger children tend to remain forever “the baby” enjoyable to be around, but at times too dependent on others.
What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.Birth order is the top factor influencing a person’s development.
B.Older siblings’ early leadership has nothing to do with their parents.
C.An older child may be unwilling to accept others’ opinions.
D.All elder brothers and sisters will turn into overbearing people eventually.
What might a younger child want to be according to the passage?
A.A librarian. B.A doctor. C.A writer. D.A teacher.
Why may later children become good sellers?
A.They feel uneasy when making decisions for other people.
B.They are very good at persuading others.
C.They have great wishes to develop leadership.
D.They are good at selling books and enjoying freedom.
What’s the best title for this passage?
A.Which Is Better: Being the Eldest or the Youngest?
B.Birth Order and Marriage
C.The Relation Between Birth Order and Job Success
D.Effects of Birth Order on One’s Personality
根据第一段“The danger is that if the older child takes that role to an extreme (极限), he or she can become an overbearing person who won’t listen to others because they think they are the leaders.(危险在于,如果年长的孩子将这种角色发挥到极致,他或她可能会成为一个专横的人,不听取别人的意见,因为他们认为自己是领导者。)”
根据第三段“This may help explain why younger children are easy to like jobs such as music, art, and writing.(这可能有助于解释为什么年幼的孩子容易喜欢音乐、艺术和写作等工作。)”
根据第三段“Later children may be good sellers because persuasion (劝说) may have been the only tool they had to deal with older children.(排行靠后的孩子可能是很好的推销员,因为劝说可能是他们与年长孩子打交道的唯一工具。)”
因此,最适合本文的标题是“Effects of Birth Order on One’s Personality(出生顺序对个人性格的影响)”。故选D项。
(本题12.5分)On his 15th birthday, Wilson Bentley’s mother gave him an old microscope. It was snowing that day, and the boy succeeded in getting a glimpse of a six-sided snowflake (雪花) with the device.
When he was 17, Bentley asked his parents to buy him a new, better microscope and a camera. Bentley then spent 2 years figuring out how to take a picture of a snowflake under a microscope. On January 15, 1885, he did it, creating the world’s first photomicrograph.
37(2.5分) Outdoors, he collected snowflakes on a wooden tray that was painted black. Once inside, while still wearing big gloves to keep his hands warm, he used a straw (吸管) to pick up the snowflake and place it on a microscope slide. Then being careful not to breathe on the flake, he quickly examined and photographed it.
Taking photomicrographs was only half of a long process. In those days, glass plates (感光板) were used to take photographs. Bentley developed the plates in a dark room under some stairs and then carried the plates to a nearby stream to wash them.
Bentley shared his snowflakes with anyone interested. He sold prints of his photomicrographs for 5 cents each. He wrote articles for scientists and for magazines such as National Geographic. Occasionally, he felt discouraged that few people seemed to care about his work. 39(2.5分) At age 65, he photographed his 5,000th snowflake.
Slowly, people became interested. Reporters sometimes appeared at his door. People began to call him “the Snowflake Man” and “Professor Bentley.” 40(2.5分) In 1920, Bentley was elected as one of the first members of the American Meteorological Society, which later awarded him its first research grant in 1924.
A.Still, he never stopped.
B.The process was difficult and cold.
C.Sometimes he did this at night in the dark.
D.Jewelry makers copied the snowflake designs.
E.Sometimes he handled the snowflake with a feather.
F.He dedicated himself to observing flakes of snow for 60 years.
G.This was the beginning of a fascination that lasted the rest of his life.
【答案】36.G 37.B 38.C 39.A 40.D
上文“On his 15th birthday, Wilson Bentley’s mother gave him an old microscope. It was snowing that day, and the boy succeeded in getting a glimpse of a six-sided snowflake (雪花) with the device. (在Wilson Bentley 15岁生日那天,他的母亲送给他一台旧显微镜。那天正在下雪,这个男孩用这台仪器成功地看到了一个六边形的雪花。)”讲述Bentley在15岁生日时首次用显微镜看到六边形雪花,下文“When he was 17, Bentley asked his parents to buy him a new, better microscope and a camera. (在他17岁那年,Bentley请求父母给他买一台新的、更好的显微镜以及一台相机。)”提到他在17岁时想要更好的显微镜和相机,因此G项“This was the beginning of a fascination that lasted the rest of his life. (这是他终生迷恋雪花的开端。)”符合语境,指出首次看到雪花的经历对他产生了深远影响,承上启下。
37.下文“Outdoors, he collected snowflakes on a wooden tray that was painted black. 六、书面表达
67.(本题25分)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“I don’t want to sit next to that... woman!” Franklin said to the stewardess who had accompanied an old woman, Stella, and told him she was seated next to him.
“Sir, this is her seat. We can’t do anything about it,” the stewardess said gently, trying to persuade the businessman who had a glare on his face.
“That seems unlikely,” Franklin said, loud enough for nearby rows to hear. “These seats require a certain... well, given the fare structure, I’m sure the airline has verification (验证) procedures.” He glanced at Stella’s outfit, then back to the stewardess. “I’m merely concerned about system integrity.”
Other passengers in business class turned to look at them, and Stella looked down at her feet. The argument continued, and it was delaying filling the plane. Several other stewardesses showed up, trying to calm Franklin down.
Surprisingly, a few passengers agreed with the businessman. They agreed that the woman couldn’t possibly have paid for the seat and told her to get out. But more stayed silent, looking uncomfortable. It was the most shameful experience of Stella’s life, and finally, she calmed down.
“Miss, it’s OK. If you have another seat in economy, I’ll stay there. I spent all my savings on this seat, but it’s better not to trouble others,” she said, placing her hand on the stewardess’ arm gently. Her voice trembled, but her back was straight. She had survived worse — poverty, loneliness, and now this. She wouldn’t let them break her dignity.
The stewardess had already been so kind to her because Stella got lost at the airport. She was 85 years old and had never traveled in her lifetime. Therefore, the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport had been pretty confusing. But the airline finally assigned her a stewardess, who accompanied her through the entire process, and they finally reached her flight, which was departing for New York.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
The stewardess wouldn’t give in.

Hearing Stella’s words, the businessman felt more than guilty.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The stewardess wouldn’t give in. She faced Franklin squarely, her eyes steady and unwavering. She said, “Sir, I understand your frustration, but this lady has every right for her seat. She’s gone through a lot to get here today.” Then, turning to Stella, she said gently, “You don’t have to move, ma’am. This is your seat.” Stella took a deep breath and looked up at Franklin, her voice steady but tinged with a hint of sadness. “I’ve saved for a long time to take this trip. I know I don’t look like I belong here, but I’ve worked hard for this.” Her words were simple, yet they carried a weight that made the other passengers pause and reflect.
Hearing Stella’s words, the businessman felt more than guilty. His face flushed with shame as he realized the depth of his prejudice and the hurt he had caused. Slowly, he stood up, head bowed. “I was wrong to judge you based on appearances. I’m truly sorry for my behavior,” he said sincerely. Stella looked at him, her expression softening. “We all make mistakes,” she replied gently. The other passengers, moved by the exchange, also apologized to Stella. The stewardess, relieved, helped Stella settle into her seat. As the plane began to move, Stella took a deep breath, grateful for the unexpected turn of events and the kindness that had emerged.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
