W: Is that where you got the idea?
M: Yes. I’ve been reading the books to my daughter.
W: I can see why some people might think it’s a good idea, but it can have a negative impact on the students’ overall education.
M: How so?
W: Well, students learn best when they are interested in the subject. Under your system, they might take actions to win points, rather than to learn. It’s almost like a video game.
M: But I think if you do it right, no matter what methods you use, they will be learning.

Hello, everybody. As you know, “Clean the Beach Day” is taking place next Sunday. And I’m sure most of you are familiar with what needs to be done, the rules and the schedule. But let me review it once more. So, first of all, clothing: since it’s still quite cold in March, you’ll definitely need to wear a pair of good waterproof boots. Make sure you don’t come in your sports shoes as those will get wet very easily. Waterproof trousers and a good jacket are also advisable. Now, I’m sure you remember that you don’t need to bring protective gloves and big plastic bags, as the school will provide you with those at the beach before we start cleaning. During the event, there will be water and orange juice available if you’re thirsty. But if you think you might feel hungry while we’re actually collecting the rubbish, then you’d better bring some snacks with you. As there won’t be any food at that time. After we finish, however, a light lunch will be offered and we’ll gather together and have a pleasant picnic on the beach.

Over 1 million marine animals fall victim to plastic waste each year. As students, we can make a difference. Our “Plastic-Free Campus” Initiative
The challenge asks participants to go without disposable (一次性的) plastics — bottles, straws, bags, containers — for ten days straight. We require every student to take these three steps:
1. Bring your own bottle. One reusable bottle saves up to 500 disposable bottles a year. Fill it at any campus fountain.
2. Refuse plastic straws and bags. Just say “No straw, please.” Carry a cloth bag for shopping.
3. Refuse unnecessary plastic packaging. Choose package-free options whenever possible.Join us!
From May 20 to May 30, the Green Campus Club will run a “Plastic-Free Challenge”. Participants who successfully complete the challenge will receive a reusable drink bottle (limited to 50 winners).

(本题10分)Inside an old railway carriage (车厢), primary school students are cooking up a Mexican-inspired dish with vegetables freshly picked from their own kitchen garden.
The years 5 and 6 students are from the Aldavilla Public School, west of Kempsey, which runs a kitchen garden program with a unique cooking space in an old Sydney railway carriage.
The outside of the old train carriage has a sign saying “Aldavilla Station”. The Aldavilla Station program was created after the school received a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation grant (拨款).
For the past years, the Aldavilla Kitchen Garden has taught kids about the benefits of cooking and eating a variety of foods that they have grown themselves. The kitchen garden coordinator Gaye Dufty has been a driving force behind the Aldavilla Station program. “It is a great change from classroom learning. The kids really love it... it’s great life skills for them,” Ms. Dufty said.
According to Ms. Dufty, the old railway carriage was at first used as a resource center at the school and then was turned into a cooking and eating space in 2011. The program has been highly popular with students and is also supported by community volunteers who help the children prepare and cook meals. So far this year more than 50 volunteers have taken part.
Ms. Dufty is now preparing to retire and is training her successor — Canadian-born professional chef Craig Stelmack. “I’ve basically walked into my dream job here,” Mr. Stelmack said. “I love cooking and I love gardening. So I am over the moon.”

(本题10分)In today’s fast-paced world, teenagers often feel pressured to achieve high grades, join multiple clubs, and maintain an active social life. While these efforts may seem admirable, they can lead to stress, anxiety, and even burnout. A growing number of educators and psychologists now suggest that students should learn the value of doing nothing — not as laziness, but as a form of mental rest.
At Maple High School in Hangzhou, a new after-school program called “Quiet Time” has been introduced. For 30 minutes every Wednesday afternoon, students are encouraged to sit quietly, breathe deeply, or simply observe their surroundings without using phones or speaking. At first, many students found it strange. “I kept checking my phone,” said Li Hua, a 16-year-old student. “But after a few weeks, I started to enjoy the silence. I felt calmer and more focused in class.”
This idea is supported by science. Research shows that the brain needs downtime to process information and strengthen memories. When we’re constantly busy, our brains don’t have time to organize what we’ve learned. Just like muscles need rest after exercise, the mind needs quiet moments to recover and grow stronger.
Mindfulness — the practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgment — is also being taught in some schools. In Unit 4 of the new English textbook, students read about how mindfulness helped a teenager manage exam stress. Simple activities like focusing on breathing or walking slowly can reduce anxiety and improve emotional control.
Some parents worry that “doing nothing” means wasting time. But experts argue that mental rest is not unproductive. In fact, many great ideas come during moments of stillness. Albert Einstein once said he got his best thoughts while sailing alone. Steve Jobs was known for taking long walks without any devices.
As teens face increasing academic pressure, learning to slow down might be one of the most important skills they can develop. As one teacher put it, “Success isn’t just about how much you do — it’s also about knowing when to pause.”
What is the main purpose of the “Quiet Time” program?
A.To provide students with mental relaxation.
B.To teach students how to use technology wisely.
C.To help students improve their test scores quickly.
D.To encourage students to join more school activities.
What does the author compare mental rest to in Paragraph 3?
A.Studying hard for exams. B.Keeping smartphones off.
C.Resting muscles after exercise. D.Preparing for club activities.
According to the passage, how does mindfulness help students?
A.It improves their physical strength. B.It allows them to spend more time online.
C.It helps them memorize vocabulary faster. D.It reduces stress and increases self-control.
What can be inferred about the author’s attitude toward “doing nothing”?
A.Against. B.Supportive. C.Doubtful. D.Unconcerned.
【答案】28.A 29.C 30.D 31.B
根据第一段“A growing number of educators and psychologists now suggest that students should learn the value of doing nothing — not as laziness, but as a form of mental rest.(越来越多的教育工作者和心理学家现在认为,学生们应当懂得“无所事事”的意义——这并非意味着懒惰,而是一种精神上的休憩方式)”以及第二段“At Maple High School in Hangzhou, a new after-school program called “Quiet Time” has been introduced. I felt calmer and more focused in class.”(在杭州的枫叶高中,学校引入了一项名为“安静时间”的新课外活动。每周三下午的30分钟里,学生们被鼓励安静地坐着、深呼吸或者只是观察周围环境,不使用手机也不说话。起初,许多学生都觉得这很奇怪。“我一直在查看手机上的信息,”16岁的学生李华说,“但过了几周后,我开始享受这份安静。我在课堂上感觉更平静、更专注了。”)”可知,该项目的主要目的是为学生提供精神放松。故选A。
根据第三段“Just like muscles need rest after exercise, the mind needs quiet moments to recover and grow stronger.(就像肌肉在运动后需要休息一样,大脑也需要安静的时刻来恢复并变得更加强大)”可知,作者通过类比的方式说明大脑也需要安静的时间来恢复和变强。故选C。
根据第四段中“Simple activities like focusing on breathing or walking slowly can reduce anxiety and improve emotional control.(一些简单的活动,比如专注于呼吸或者缓慢行走,就能减轻焦虑并增强情绪控制能力)”可知,正念练习能帮助学生减轻压力、提高自我控制能力。故选D。
根据最后一段“As teens face increasing academic pressure, learning to slow down might be one of the most important skills they can develop. As one teacher put it, “Success isn’t just about how much you do — it’s also about knowing when to pause.”(随着青少年面临日益增大的学业压力,学会放慢节奏或许会是他们能够培养的最重要的一项技能。
(本题10分)Every morning, students at Riverview Middle School walk into their outdoor classroom while birds sing happily around them. This special learning area is under the open sky, surrounded (围绕) by tall trees and colorful flowers. It is part of a new teaching method that doesn’t always use the four walls of a common classroom. The fresh air and natural light make it a happy place to start the school day.
Teachers at the school notice that outdoor classes help students learn better. Science lessons become more interesting when children can touch real leaves and watch insects climbing on the ground. In math classes, students practice measuring by calculating (计算) the height of trees. Even reading time moves outside — many children now enjoy reading stories and poems under the trees.
Mr. Hernandez, the school principal (校长), tells the benefits clearly. “Students stay more interested when they’re not always at their desks,” he says. “Since we began having classes outdoors, students have focused better on their work and miss fewer school days.” Parents have watched positive changes too.
Of course, outdoor learning has its difficulties. When it rains heavily or it is cold, everyone must return to the indoor classrooms. Some science experiments need special equipment (设备) that stays in the laboratory. However, the school has good ways for these difficulties. Teachers change their plans with the weather. They also use special outdoor teaching tools like waterproof whiteboards.
These outdoor learning ways help students understand their school subjects more deeply. It also encourages them to enjoy and care for the natural world. Even when weather isn’t perfect, both students and teachers endorse that learning outdoors remains useful. Their experience proves that an excellent classroom doesn’t necessarily require a roof or four walls — sometimes the best education happens under an open sky, surrounded by nature’s beauty.
What writing skill is used in paragraph 2?
A.Using famous sayings. B.Following space order.
C.Giving examples. D.Telling the cause and result.
What can we infer from the words of Hernandez?
A.Students are more focused on classes.
B.Teachers are more comfortable than before.
C.Parents think it a waste of time spent outdoors.
D.Outdoor courses are more important than traditional ones.
Which of the following ways is mentioned to solve the difficulties?
A.All outdoor experiments are stopped.
B.There should be no outdoor classes in bad weather.
C.Outdoor classes are only held in spring and summer.
D.Plans and tools suitable for outdoor classes are used.
What does the underlined word “endorse” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Doubt. B.Believe. C.Dislike. D.Teach.
【答案】32.C 33.A 34.D 35.B
根据第二段中“Science lessons become more interesting when children can touch real leaves and watch insects climbing on the ground. In math classes, students practice measuring by calculating (计算) the height of trees. Even reading time moves outside — many children now enjoy reading stories and poems under the trees.(当孩子们可以触摸真实的树叶,观察昆虫在地上爬行时,科学课变得更加有趣。在数学课上,学生们通过计算树的高度来练习测量。就连阅读时间也移到了室外——现在许多孩子喜欢在树下读故事和诗歌)”可知,第二段通过列举科学课、数学课和阅读时间在户外进行的例子,来说明户外课堂对学生学习的帮助,所以使用了举例子的写作技巧。故选C项。
33.推理判断题。根据第三段中Hernandez的话““Students stay more interested when they’re not always at their desks,” he says. “Since we began having classes outdoors, students have focused better on their work and miss fewer school days.”(“当学生们不总是坐在课桌前时,他们会更有兴趣,”他说。“自从我们开始在户外上课以来,学生们更加专注于学习,缺课天数也减少了。”)”可知,从Hernandez的话中可以推断出学生在户外上课时更专注于课堂。故选A项。
根据第四段中“Teachers change their plans with the weather. They also use special outdoor teaching tools like waterproof whiteboards.(老师们根据天气改变他们的计划。他们还使用特殊的户外教学工具,如防水白板)”可知,文章提到的解决困难的方法是使用适合户外课程的计划和工具。故选D项。
35.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“This outdoor learning ways help students understand their school subjects more deeply. It also encourages them to enjoy and care for the natural world.(这种户外学习方式帮助学生更深入地理解他们的学校科目。

No One Will Ever Know
Karen, Judy and I were the last ones back in the classroom after lunch, which was mostly empty. All of the other sixth graders were already outside playing happily, since it was a pleasant spring day.
“Look what I found this morning in the storage cupboard when I was getting out some art supplies for Mrs. Eiffler.” With a broad grin on her face, Karen held up a wooden box filled with short pieces of chalk in every color of the rainbow.
“Wow! What fun it would be to write on the blackboard while everyone is outside.” Judy’s eyes twinkled with anticipation. “But Mrs. Eiffler doesn’t want us writing on the blackboard,” I responded, already feeling guilty, although we had not yet done a thing. “Don’t be such a ‘fraidy cat’, Janet. No one will ever know,” said Karen, reaching into the box and drawing out a piece of chalk. “Right. Everyone is outside, so we’re safe.” Judy was already drawing a house with sure strokes. I hesitantly joined my friends in the artwork, wanting to be part of what was going on, but afraid of being caught.
Trying various colors, we drew houses, trees and flowers. It was fun! All the time we were watching the clock, knowing that our fun would be over if anyone walked into the room. Then I had an idea. I chose a white piece from the box and wrote my name using my left hand. The handwriting was a bit shaky, but no one would doubt that it said “Janet”.
“We’d better get this board cleaned off before Mrs. Eiffler comes back,” said Judy, eyeing the clock. She picked up an eraser and began erasing our handiwork from the board, trying not to leave any erasing marks.
Everything came off... but my name!
In disbelief, I looked at the chalk I held in my sweaty hand. Gosh! It wasn’t chalk at all. I had picked up a small piece of white color crayon which was mixed in with the pieces of chalk.
My stomach hurt and my knees felt weak. What would Mrs. Eiffler do to me?
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
“Quick, get some wet paper towels to make it come off,” said Judy, springing into action.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mrs. Eiffler walked in soon afterward, but she didn’t seem to notice the erasing marks.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“Quick, get some wet paper towels to make it come off,” said Judy, springing into action. But after vigorous rubbing, my name still remained and I felt really crazy, “Why won’t you disappear?” I choked out, watching my name cling stubborn as tattoos. Precious minutes were ticking away. We rubbed furiously with more paper towels and my name eventually came off. However, in the process of removing it, we left some erasing marks on the chalkboard. Before we could deal with it, the other students began entering the room, and we had to slip into our desks. (80 words)
Mrs. Eiffler walked in soon afterward, but she didn’t seem to notice the erasing marks. However, I did. Every time I walked past the blackboard, I remembered. After hours of wrestling with myself, I told Judy and Karen my decision-tell Mrs. Eiffler the truth. After a short hesitation, they two went to the teacher’s office with me to confess our mistake. To our surprise, Mrs. Eiffler didn’t punish us but instead praised us for our honesty. From this lesson, I came to realize that “No one will ever know” is never true. Even if no one else found out, I knew. Sometimes living with a guilty conscience is punishment enough. (96 words)
③领悟:realize /be aware of
①惊讶: surprise /astonishment
②犹豫:hesitation/wavering
1】Before we could deal with it, the other students began entering the room, and we had to slip into our desks.(运用了 before引导的时间状语从句)
2】From this lesson, I came to realize that “No one will ever know” is never true..(运用了 that引导的宾语从句)

Mr. Stelmack said the students had already impressed him. “The kids are amazing; honestly, the level at which they operate is often what I expect from my first-year apprentices (学徒),” he said.

B.Teachers are more comfortable than before.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
“Quick, get some wet paper towels to make it come off,” said Judy, springing into action.
