(本题10分)Born in Salford in 1966, Russell Watson is the UK’s bestselling classical crossover artist. He began his career in the working-class clubs of the northwest before getting a record deal and releasing The Voice, an album that held No.1 for an impressive 52 weeks.
At the age of 15, Watson’s room, though small, was filled with photos of Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, and Paul Weller. While he was deeply attached to music, football was his primary passion. His first guitar, which he saw in a shop window, cost £300 — a small fortune at the time. His family, with his mother as a stay-at-home parent and his father working at the factory, couldn’t afford it. Determined, Watson took on paper rounds and even washed cars during school holidays to save enough money. That guitar became his most treasured item, though he later sold it during tough financial times in the 2000s.
Watson’s big break came when his mother arranged his first performance in a local club. Although they were paid in custard_creams_and_tea, it marked the beginning of his career.
Early performances were tough, and the audience wasn’t always receptive. However, Watson learned how to engage and connect with them, an experience that shaped him into a seasoned performer.
By 1999, he was recording in George Martin’s studio, and his classical crossover career took off, especially after teamwork with artists like Shaun Ryder. However, in 2003, health problems, including throat and vocal (声带) diseases, stopped his progress. Watson faced even more serious health challenges in 2005 when he suffered from brain tumours (肿瘤). In spite of this, he remained devoted, continuing to work on his album. Though told he wouldn’t perform like his younger self, Watson’s voice is now stronger than ever, and he remains grateful for the journey that has shaped him.
What do we know about Russell Watson according to paragraph 1?
A.He was born in the US in 1966. B.His first album was a hit.
C.He set the highest sales record. D.He started the working-class club.
Why did Watson sell his first guitar?
A.To give in to his father. B.To fund his first album.
C.To get a better instrument. D.To address financial struggles.
The underlined phrase “custard creams and tea” in paragraph 3 implies __.
A.humble income B.appropriate rewards
C.symbolic recognition D.professional contracts
What can we say about Watson from the text?

C.He has strong willpower. D.He relies only on natural talent.
(本题10分)A broken heart and a sad ending to a long friendship. That’s something most of us have experienced, or probably will. After all, it’s part of human life. But the experience can be hard to get over.
But research shows there are pathways through the heartache. Listening to sad music is a major one. It can help you begin to feel joy and hopefulness about your life again. It can arouse the desire to connect with others.
Sad music can help heal and uplift you from your broken heart. A recent study from Germany found the emotional influence of listening to sad music is an arousal of feelings of empathy (同情), and a desire for positive connection with others. That, itself, is psychologically healing. It draws you away from concentration on yourself, and possibly towards helping others in need of comfort.
Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was “beautiful but sad” improved their mood. In fact, it did so when the person first consciously accept the situation causing their sadness, and then began listening to the sad music. That is, when they intended that the sad music might help, they found that it did.
These findings link with other studies that show accepting your sad situation emotionally leads to healing and growth beyond it. It seems unbelievable but it does make sense. For example, research from Cornell University found that accepting discomfort about a life experience or new situation, and viewing it as a step towards growth and change, encourages people to find a pathway through it, beyond it. As Churchill famously said, “If you’re going through_hell, keep going.” That discomfort points you towards creating a plan, a new action. It brings hope.
What can we learn from Paragraph 3&4?
A.Sad music can make people help others.

(本题10分)Recently, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an artificial intelligence(AI) tool, called MusicLM, built to create music. It is not the first AI music tool to launch. But the examples Google provides demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words. AI shows how complex computer systems have been trained to behave in human-like ways. Google engineers explain the MusicLM system this way.
First, a user comes up with a word or words that describe the kind of music they want the tool to create. For example, a user could enter this short phrase into the system: “a continuous calming violin backed by a soft guitar sound.”The descriptions entered can include different music styles, instruments or other existing sounds. Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one-or-two-word descriptions, such as “jazz”, or “techno”. The system created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences. In the resulting recording, the music seems to keep very close to the description. The team said that the more detailed the description is, the better the system can attempt to produce it.
In addition to generating new music from written descriptions, the team said the system can also create examples based on a person’s own singing, whistling or playing an instrument. The researchers said the tool “produces high-quality music...over several minutes, while being faithful to the text conditioning signal”.
Although MusicLM hasn’t been released for public use, Google announced it was releasing a “high-quality dataset” of more than 5,500 music-writing pairs prepared by professional musicians called MusicCaps. The researchers took that step to assist in the development of other AI music generators.
The MusicLM researchers said they believe they have designed a new tool to help anyone quickly and easily create high-quality music selections. However, the team said it also recognizes some risks linked to the machine learning process.

For months,14-year-old Charlie spent hours on music practice, fueled by a passion that made every note feel like a joy. His big dream was to submit his original piece Sunny Afternoon — a work inspired by his weekend violin practice sessions (一段时间) — to the school’s music magazine. This time, the magazine partnered with a city youth club to select just 10 pieces for a live showcase, making it a rare and precious opportunity for Charlie.
His best friends Jake and Mia were always by his side. After school, they would sit in the music room, listening to his violin practice and calling out excitedly, “This part feels like running through a sunny park. It’s so lively and warm!”
Just as he was preparing to record the final violin version of his piece, disaster struck unexpectedly. During a PE class basketball game, Charlie jumped to catch the ball, lost his balance, and landed hard on his right wrist — the very hand he used to hold the violin bow. The doctor’s words broke his hope: He would need to keep his right wrist still for at least two months, making it impossible for him to play the violin at all.
“My dream’s over,” he whispered, hot tears wetting his bandage. He tucked (收起) his violin away in a box, stopped mentioning the magazine, and even pulled away from Jake and Mia, worried they’d see him as someone who gave up too easily.
Charlie’s music teacher, Ms. Carter, who’d watched him pour his heart into Sunny Afternoon, noticed his low spirits and pulled him aside after class one day. “Your love for music isn’t just about playing the violin,” she said softly, pulling up a simple music app on her computer. “What if you try this? You can type notes, choose instruments, and piece your tune together, all with your left hand.”

C.To show how to get over anxiety.

A.Performing in public.
B.Singing in the studio.
C.Entertaining the passers-by.
【答案】17.B 18.C 19.A 20.B
W: Hello, everyone. I know most of you want to be singers, but I’m afraid to say, it’s all hard work. However, the rewards are beyond anything else, so it’s a fair deal. If you have got a good voice, then treasure it. Don’t be anxious if it does get hurt — it’s impressive how it’ll recover. The important thing is to use it. Get out the campus and take every chance you can to sing in public. This experience will also help to feed and build your ambition to go on, to be better. Singing on stage to an appreciative audience is as good as life gets. And for those who don’t like public performance, if you’ve got a good voice — then maybe you’ll be like my friend Diana. Although she got over most of her anxiety about performing in public a few years ago, she still prefers studio singing, performing directly for CDs and so on. Nobody really sees her outside her home and the studio. Even warming up her voice for a recording performance is something she does in private, making noises while sitting in her car outside the studio building. I think she’s alarmed a few passers-by in her time!

A.He puts fame before health. B.He lacks musical devotion.
C.He has strong willpower. D.He relies only on natural talent.
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.A 27.C
根据第一段“He began his career in the working-class clubs of the northwest before getting a record deal and releasing The Voice, an album that held No.1 for an impressive 52 weeks.(他的职业生涯始于美国西北部的工人阶级俱乐部,后来他签下了一份唱片合约,发行了《好声音》(the Voice),这张专辑令人印象深刻地保持了52周的冠军宝座)”可知,这张专辑在榜一待了有52周,大概为12个月,是一张成功的唱片。故选B。
根据第二段“That guitar became his most treasured item, though he later sold it during tough financial times in the 2000s.(那把吉他成了他最珍贵的物品,不过他后来在21世纪头十年的金融危机中卖掉了它)”可知,Watson卖掉他的第一把吉他是为了解决经济困难。故选D。
根据前文“Watson’s big break came when his mother arranged his first performance in a local club.(当他的母亲安排他在当地一家俱乐部的首次演出时,沃森迎来了重大突破)”可知,沃森在当地一家俱乐部的首次演出,再结合Although和“it marked the beginning of his career(但这标志着他职业生涯的开始)”可知,首次演出,收入一般不会高,所以应是尽管他的收入十分微薄,但这标志着他职业生涯的起点之意,推知custard creams and tea应是“收入微薄”的意思,和A项意思相近。故选A项。
根据最后一段“However, in 2003, health problems, including throat and vocal (声带) diseases, stopped his progress.Watson faced even more serious health challenges in 2005 when he suffered from brain tumours (肿瘤).In spite of this, he remained devoted, continuing to work on his album.Though told he wouldn’t perform like his younger self, Watson’s voice is now stronger than ever, and he remains grateful for the journey that has shaped him.(然而,在2003年,健康问题,包括喉咙和声音疾病,阻止了他的进步。2005年,沃森患了脑瘤,面临着更严重的健康挑战。尽管如此,他仍然全身心投入,继续制作他的专辑。虽然被告知他不会像年轻时那样表演,但沃森现在的声音比以往任何时候都强大,他仍然感激这段塑造了他的旅程)”可知,Waston在病魔的折磨下,依然坚持创作,所以是有强大的意志力。故选C。
B.Sad music can make sad people feel better.
C.Sad music can make people believe in themselves.
D.Sad music can make people concentrate on themselves.
What does the phrase underlined in the last paragraph mean?
A.Hearing a swear word used by enemies.
B.Avoiding a place to go after death.
C.Getting an extremely pleasant time.
D.Having an unbearable experience.
How does the author develop this article?
A.By presenting research findings. B.By giving directions.
C.By listing authoritative figures. D.By comparing examples.
Which of the following can be the best title for the article?
A.How to Find Pathways through Heartaches
B.How We React to a Broken Heart Matters a Lot
C.What We Can Do to Overcome Discomfort in Life
D.Why Listening to Sad Music Heals Your Broken Heart
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.A 31.D
根据第三段中“Sad music can help heal and uplift you from your broken heart. (悲伤的音乐可以帮助你从破碎的心灵中治愈和振作起来。)”和第四段中“Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was ‘beautiful but sad’ improved their mood. (肯特大学的另一项实验发现,当人们感到悲伤时,听‘美丽但悲伤’的音乐可以改善他们的情绪。)”可知,悲伤的音乐对悲伤的人而言有治愈作用,能改善他们的情绪,即可以让他们感觉好一些。故选B项。
29.词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文“That discomfort points you towards creating a plan, a new action. It brings hope. (这种不适会让你制定一个计划,一个新的行动。它带来了希望。)”可推知,此处描述的一种不适的、糟糕的经历。结合选项内容可知,画线短语意思应该是“有难以忍受的经历”。故选D项。
30. 推理判断题。根据第三段中“A recent study from Germany found the emotional influence of listening to sad music is an arousal of feelings of empathy (同情), and a desire for positive connection with others.(德国最近的一项研究发现,听悲伤的音乐对情绪的影响是一种同理心的唤起,以及与他人建立积极联系的渴望。)”、第四段中“Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was ‘beautiful but sad’ improved their mood.(肯特大学的另一项实验发现,当人们感到悲伤时,听‘美丽但悲伤’的音乐可以改善他们的情绪。)”和最后一段中“For example, research from Cornell University found that accepting discomfort about a life experience or new situation, and viewing it as a step towards growth and change, encourages people to find a pathway through it, beyond it.(例如,康奈尔大学的研究发现,接受对生活经历或新情况的不适,并将其视为迈向成长和改变的一步,会鼓励人们找到克服和超越它的途径。)” 故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第二段中“But research shows there are pathways through the heartache.Listening to sad music is a major one.(但研究表明,心痛是有缓解途径的。听悲伤的音乐是主要的一种途径。)”可知,文章主要介绍了听悲伤的音乐在治愈心灵创伤中的作用,这些作用包括帮助人们重新感受到生活的快乐和希望,唤起同理心,并激发与他人建立积极联系的欲望等。因此,D项“为什么听悲伤的音乐能治愈你破碎的心”契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选D项。

根据第二段中“Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one-or-two-word descriptions, such as “jazz”, or “techno”. The system created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences. In the resulting recording, the music seems to keep very close to the description. The team said that the more detailed the description is, the better the system can attempt to produce it.(MusicLM制作的几个不同的音乐示例在网上发布。有些生成的音乐仅仅来自一两个词的描述,如“爵士”或“电子乐”。该系统从包含完整句子的更详细的描述中创建了其他示例。在最终的录音中,音乐似乎与描述非常接近。该团队表示,描述越详细,系统就能更好地尝试生成它)”可知,描述越详细,系统就能更好地尝试生成它,结合选项,B项“A piano piece to uplift one’s spirits.(振奋精神的钢琴曲)”描述的最详细。故选B项。
33.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Although MusicLM hasn’t been released for public use, Google announced it was releasing a “high-quality dataset” of more than 5,500 music-writing pairs prepared by professional musicians called MusicCaps. The researchers took that step to assist in the development of other AI music generators.(虽然MusicLM还没有发布供公众使用,但谷歌宣布它将发布一个“高质量的数据集”,其中包含5500多对由专业音乐家编写的音乐创作组合,名为MusicCaps。研究人员采取这一步骤是为了帮助开发其他人工智能音乐生成器)”可知,谷歌发布MusicCaps数据集是为了帮助开发其他AI音乐生成器。故选C项。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The MusicLM researchers said they believe they have designed a new tool to help anyone quickly and easily create high-quality music selections. However, the team said it also recognizes some risks linked to the machine learning process.(MusicLM的研究人员表示,他们相信他们已经设计出一种新工具,可以帮助任何人快速、轻松地选择高质量的音乐。然而,该团队表示,他们也认识到与机器学习过程相关的一些风险)”可知,最后一段提到了机器学习过程相关的一些风险,所以接下来应该是讨论具体的风险有哪些。故选A项。
根据第一段中“Recently, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an artificial intelligence(AI) tool, called MusicLM, built to create music.(最近,谷歌的研究人员发表了一篇论文,描述了一种名为MusicLM的人工智能(AI)工具的结果,该工具用于创作音乐)”以及第二段“First, a user comes up with a word or words that describe the kind of music they want the tool to create.(首先,用户想出一个或多个单词来描述他们希望该工具创建的音乐类型)”和第三段“In addition to generating new music from written descriptions, the team said the system can also create examples based on a person’s own singing, whistling or playing an instrument.(该团队表示,除了从文字描述中生成新音乐外,该系统还可以根据一个人自己的歌唱、吹口哨或演奏乐器来创建示例)”可知,本文主要讲述了MusicLM根据书面描述创作音乐。

Good morning everyone, I am Li Hua. It’s a great honour to be invited here to deliver a speech about how music changed my life.
Once I was a shy girl. Every time I was asked to answer questions in class, I felt so nervous that I couldn’t speak fluently. So I was discouraged and didn’t know how to deal with the situation. It was music that inspired me with confidence. I thought to myself “Now that I had a talent for music, why not sing it in public bravely?” Therefore, I often sang songs in my classroom or in front of hundreds of other schoolmates. Last term I took part in a school concert and was awarded a prize for my wonderful performances. Music gave me confidence and a sense of achievement. I think I should owe my success to music.
I hope all of us will make music our friend who can cure you of your weaknesses.
Thank you!

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Charlie had never used music software before, so he felt nervous at first.

Finally came the day when the magazine’s new issue was released.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Charlie had never used music software before, so he felt nervous at first. Fortunately, Ms. Carter stayed after school to walk him through the basics. Jake and Mia also joined in to help out. Under Ms. Carter’s guidance, Charlie gradually mastered how to pick the right notes and adjust the rhythm. Now his frustration faded away, and a spark of hope arose in his chest. When he finally finished the digital version of Sunny Afternoon, he submitted it to the magazine, feeling a wave of pride.
Finally came the day when the magazine’s new issue was released. Charlie was a little nervous as he met Jake and Mia on the way to school. When they reached the school hall, he looked through the magazine with trembling fingers. Suddenly, his eyes widened in disbelief. Sunny Afternoon had made it into the top10! The three hugged tightly, cheering softly. Later, he found Ms. Carter and said, “Thank you for helping me see there’s another way to make music.” Standing there, Charlie finally understood: Dreams don’t fade when one door closes and new paths will always show up.
