(本题10分)While visiting a school for the blind in Old Delhi, India, a 14-year-old boy named Yash Mehta observed that none of the students were using digital braille readers. Priced between $2,000 and $20,000, these devices are unaffordable for most students, and they often have mechanical failures because of their complex and costly components. Rather than accept this reality, Mehta decided to try and make his own version, and after a lot of research and testing a few models, he succeeded.
Since that day in India, Mehta began moving towards his goal by working with teachers and students at the Blind Relief Association in New Delhi. There, he was able to build a model and test it with the students. “I was deeply moved when the first student, Himanshu, placed his finger on the braille cell during a test trial and accurately identified the characters I had input. Seeing that brought literal tears to my eyes, as the breakthrough highlighted the impact and value of my project and inspired me to go further,” said Mehta.
Having always been passionate about engineering, the young inventor found the hardware aspects of the project manageable. However, programming the device to transform input text into braille was something he had to teach himself. Ultimately, Mehta overcame this challenge by developing his skills and understanding of programming.
The device simulates braille letter patterns by using a set of six rotating (旋转的) motors that gently press against the user’s fingers. These motors are connected to an Arduino, an open-source electronics platform known for its user-friendly hardware and programmable software. Letter information is then input into the device, translated to braille and sent to the motors. Users can read the braille output with 86% accuracy by resting their fingers just above the motor output.
Mehta achieved his goal of creating a device that costs only about $20 to make and could be sold for around $35. He is currently working with two schools to refine the design of the machine for production.
24.(2.5分)Why did Yash Mehta want to create a new version of braille readers?
A.He had a real passion for researching and making new things.
B.He hoped to make more profits from selling brand-new products.
C.The components of the braille readers available were hard to produce.
D.The braille readers available were too expensive and often broke down.
25.(2.5分)What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Character input. B.The test trial.
C.Himanshu’s success. D.The braille cell.
26.(2.5分)What difficulty did Yash Mehta come across in his project?
A.Transforming braille text. B.Managing the hardware parts.
C.Learning programming skills. D.Understanding braille systems.
27.(2.5分)What is Paragraph 4 of the text mainly about?
A.The design of the braille motors. B.The working principle of the device.
C.The approach to building the device. D.The function of the Arduino platform.
In Baltimore’s Ellwood Park neighbourhood, the Hipp Laundromat (自助式洗衣店) gets crowded with nearby residents. But during the washing process, they’re often idle. Alongside the washers and driers, a new station with laptops and tablets in the corner is providing internet access. It’s part of a new programme called the Wash and Learn Initiative (WALI) at this and three other laundromats, started by Enoch Pratt Free Library and Libraries Without Borders.
The devices are loaded with classes and other offerings from the library. At two of the laundromats, librarians will also be on hand to provide programming around digital skills and one-on-one guidance. “You’ve got 30 minutes where everything’s in the dryer and there’s nothing to do. That’s when you can sit down at a computer, and ask a librarian to help you reset your E-mail password and to do the stuff that you aren’t comfortable doing on your own,” said Lo Smith, a leader of WALI.
WALI also aims to provide digital access in areas where residents can benefit from neighbourhood internet connectivity. A report released in 2017 stated that more than 74,000 households in Baltimore lack internet access. “Without a wired internet connection at home, kids can’t do their homework, people can’t apply for jobs,” said Jane Brown, president of the Deutsch Foundation.
Adam Echelman, Director of Libraries Without Borders, said the setting is ideal: along with being a place where people have to stick around for multiple hours, it’s also near a specific community and draws repeat users. For those new to technology, librarians can also help break an emotional barrier coming with learning something new, Smith said. “It helps to have someone who understands where you are, to walk you through some of the harder parts and to coach and support you along the way.”
28.(0分)What does the underlined word “idle” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Bored. B.Lonely.
C.Busy. D.Sleepy.
29.How do the librarians support residents in WALI?
A.By assisting people with job hunting.
B.By supporting kids in school learning.
C.By providing users with digital devices.
D.By guiding residents to digital resources.
30.Why does the author mention the 2017 report?
A.To prove the necessity of digital access.
B.To indicate the number of city households.
C.To show the limitation of home computers.
D.To explain the absence of wired connections.
31.What are the major advantages of WALI?
A.Free devices and faster Internet.
B.Digital courses and job opportunities.
C.Perfect sites and emotional support.
D.Expert librarians and in-person classes.
(本题10分)Weighted blankets(毯子), which have been advertised as a solution to anxiety and poor sleep, have gone from a not-well-known tool to a common wellness must-have, with producers saying they’ll bring better sleep and less stress to people. But do they keep these promises?
Sleep researchers have used weighted blankets since the 1970s to help children with autism, a kind of mental problem, and adults with sensory problems. They appeared on the market in the1990s, but most were only used by people with special needs.
Things changed a lot in recent years. Companies started focusing on what they call “people who feel anxious sometimes”— basically anyone having trouble with modern life’s stress. The ads worked: Time magazine even said the weighted blanket was one of the top 50 “inventions” of 2018.
The idea behind weighted blankets is simple. They usually weigh 2 to 13 kilograms— around 10% of your body weight. They use what occupational therapists call “deep pressure stimulation (压力刺激)”. The soft, steady pressure on your body makes you feel like being held.
A study of 120 psychiatric patients found that weighted blankets improved sleep quality over four weeks in people with some health problems, like depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and ADHD.Smaller studies have shown similar results. One found that 63% of adults reported lower anxiety after just five minutes under a weighted blanket, while another study of psychiatric patients found 60% experienced reduced anxiety during their hospital stay.
However, these studies all focused on people with mental health conditions, not the general population that companies are now focusing on. There’s not enough evidence(证据) that they do good to common users who don’t have mental health problems.
This doesn’t mean weighted blankets are totally useless for healthy people. Shift workers — who have to sleep during the day — might find them helpful. They can fight the known health problems from irregular schedules. Healthcare workers, firefighters and pilots need short, useful naps. These blankets could help them fall asleep faster.
If a weighted blanket makes you feel calmer and sleep better, even if it doesn’t work like producers say, that’s still good. Just make sure you know what you’re buying.
32.(2.5分)What do weighted blankets promise to solve?
A.Sleeplessness. B.Weight problems. C.Headache. D.Forgetfulness.
33.(2.5分)How does the weighted blanket work?
A.By fixing users’ sleeping time. B.By working out users’ body weight.
C.By bringing users a pleasant feeling. D.By copying the feeling of sleeping in bed.
34.(2.5分)What does the author think of weighted blankets?
A.They are useless for healthy people.
B.They will have a very hopeful future ahead.
C.They are helpful to certain groups of people.
D.They may cause some mental health problems.
35.(2.5分)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The Science Behind Deep Pressure
B.Who Gets Most from Weighted Blankets?
C.Weighted Blankets: From Special Needs to Daily Use
D.Do Weighted Blankets Really Live Up to Their Wellness Promises?

Our class had just finished a tough round of monthly exams. For weeks, we had been buried in endless exams, piles of homework and tight study schedules, which left us exhausted both physically and mentally.
Longing for a thorough break to escape the stressful school life, my best friend Jack and I were desperate to relax. “Let’s climb the mountain near the city this weekend!” Jack suggested excitedly. I agreed at once without hesitation. We both eagerly looked forward to the refreshing trip and made a firm promise to each other, “No giving up halfway, whatever happens.”
Early in the morning, we set off in high spirits. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, with bright golden sunshine streaming down and soft gentle wind brushing our faces gently. Walking along the quiet, winding mountain path, we chatted happily about our colorful school life, shared funny daily anecdotes and burst into laughter from time to time.
The whole mountain was covered with thick lush green plants, and delicate wild flowers of various colors dotted both sides of the path, bringing us great joy and total relaxation. However, just as we were fully enjoying the pleasant scenery, the weather changed subtly halfway up the mountain. Thin dark clouds slowly covered the clear blue sky, and soon a soft light drizzle began to fall quietly.
The fine rain was not fierce at all, yet it gradually moistened the rough stone path and made it slightly slippery. Totally absorbed in the unique misty mountain scenery, I neglected my footsteps carelessly. Suddenly, I stepped on a smooth wet stone, stumbled clumsily and fell down by the roadside. My knee was slightly scraped and ached faintly, but fortunately, I suffered no serious injury.
Though the pain was totally bearable, this unexpected fall instantly ruined my wonderful mood. Staring at the endless twisting path ahead and the lingering drizzle, I sighed disappointedly and whispered helplessly, “It’s raining and the path is too tough. Maybe we should just turn back and go home.”

【答案】18.C 19.A 20.B
【原文】W: We won’t know what the future house will look like, but we can imagine three kinds of houses. The first one is the tree house. Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity and even create fresh air for the home. The root of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil to control the home’s temperature. The second one is the lizard home. Like a lizard, changing colors with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it’s in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During the dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy. The last one is the chimney house. In such a house, a chimney can be a useful air conditioner because it is easier for hot air to flow out of the chimney.

A.Bored. B.Lonely.

Hearing my frustrated words, Jack hurried over to check my injury, his eyes full of concern. “Are you okay?” he asked softly. After examining my knee, he smiled in relief, “It’s just a minor scrape! It’s far from serious.” He patted the dirt off my clothes and reminded me earnestly, “We promised each other no giving up halfway. Don’t let this small trouble defeat us!” His warm and encouraging words instantly cheered me up. I shook off my negative mood and nodded firmly. Despite the continuous light drizzle, I no longer felt discouraged. With Jack’s company and support, I stood up and kept climbing forward bravely with him.
We kept climbing patiently, encouraging each other all the way. Gradually, the fine drizzle ceased and dark clouds rolled away. The bright sun broke through the clouds, lighting up the entire mountain. We eventually reached the peak, bathed in warm sunshine. Overlooking the breathtaking scenery, I sighed with amazement. “It’s all worth it!” I said excitedly. Jack smiled and replied, “Persistence always pays off.” I expressed my sincere gratitude to him for motivating me. This unforgettable experience made me realize that only with perseverance and true friendship can we embrace sunshine and wonderful scenery after hardships.
