After the festival, I help clean up the venue. Thank every volunteer, and then finally go home to rest.
Summer Camps for Young Writers
These specialized camps help students master unique writing and artistic forms through daily practice and expert guidance. Filmmaking as Dialogue
In this class taught by filmmaker Isidore Bethel, we will use the camera to facilitate and enrich our interactions with others — friends, family, animals, plants, and the world around us. Writing texts with a partner, recording and sharing short videos, and interpreting their meanings aloud will be starting points for developing individual and collaborative approaches to filmmaking. Intro to Poetry: The Image and the Line
Emma Wood, Executive Director of Stone Soup, will teach a class on poetry. Immerse yourself in what a poem is and what it can do. Students will write their own poetry, shaking themselves out of established modes of thinking. Reality Hunger: An Introduction to Memoir
In this class, also led by Emma Wood, you will read and write memoirs and personal essays — in short form. You will consider how they work, ask questions about the moral aspects of writing nonfiction (What if my mom reads it? What if I hurt someone’s feelings? What if my memory is “wrong”?), and — most importantly — experiment in the form with daily in-class writing prompts (提示), sharing your work in a supportive and fun community. Literature in Miniature: A Study of Micro Fiction & Prose Poetry
Sometimes, the biggest ideas are best expressed in the tiniest forms. In this workshop taught by former Stone Soup Blog Editor Caleb Berg, you will learn to channel your horizons into a style of writing perfected by some famous writers. You will write multiple separate pieces per day and finish the class with enough writing to fill up a booklet.

(本题10分)“It’s said that to be a poet, you have to go to hell (地狱) and back,” says Cristina Domenech, who teaches poetry to prisoners. “They have plenty of hell,” she says. Prisoners make for eager poetry students, she says, precisely because self-expression is so rarely practiced behind bars. She helps them to open up about their experiences and find a psychological escape from prison through the freedom of the written word.
“They told me they wanted to put on paper all that they couldn’t say and do,” she recalls. The prison restrictions were not just physical, she learned, but psychological as well. “In prison, you can’t dream,” she says. “In prison, you can’t cry. There are words that are virtually forbidden, like the word ‘future’, the word ‘wish’.”
Domenech first gave the prisoners some reading assignments. “By reading the poems, they began to realize that what the poetic language did was to break a certain logic and create another system,” Domenech says. “The poetic language made them realize that they could break the unspoken logic of the prison system, which had conditioned them into a state of silence. They began to understand that with poetic language they would be able to say absolutely whatever they wanted.”
“Freedom is possible even inside a prison,” Domenech insists. “The only bars they have in their classroom is the word ‘bars’.” But first her students had to find words that would give meaning to the aimless experience in prison. “They’ve learned that they can make the walls invisible,” she says.
At the end of her course, her students read their poems aloud to a gathering of prisoners, family and friends. It was an emotional moment. “Those men, some of them just huge when standing next to me, or the young boys—so young, but with an enormous pride — read their poems with their voices completely broken,” Domenech says. “What I see week after week, is how they’re being transformed; how words are empowering them with a dignity they had never known, that they couldn’t even imagine.”
How do the prisoners learn poetry according to Domenech?
A.In pairs. B.By themselves.
C.With great difficulty. D.With great passion.
What does poetry serve as for the prisoners?
A.A tool to learn literature. B.A reminder of good behavior.
C.A window to the outside world. D.An outlet for unspoken thoughts.
What message is delivered in paragraph 4?
A.Bars can’t keep out poetry. B.Freedom can be found in poetry.
C.Words are more powerful than bars. D.Freedom can change life in prison.
How does poetry affect the prisoners according to the text?
A.It inspires them to solve problems creatively. B.It enables them to get what they want.
C.It makes them stronger and more confident. D.It makes them aware of their responsibilities.
(本题10分)“There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings.” This is the surprising first sentence of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, the 1962 book that arguably sparked the modern environmental movement.
While most people have heard of Silent Spring, many fewer have actually read it. It is now largely classified as textbooks or other educational contexts.
That is why its first sentence is so surprising: Silent Spring does not read like a textbook. It begins with a fable and is filled with beautiful, emotional writing and passion throughout. Carson raised a public outcry against DDT not just with her research on its harmful effects, but with the vivid descriptions, powerful arguments, and poetic language that lift Silent Spring into the world of other great works of American literature.
The poetry of Carson’s opening continues into the rest of Silent Spring. There is poetic language throughout the book; even Carson’s chapter titles such as “Earth’s Green Mantle (披风)” and “Through a Narrow Window” are not what we might expect for a scientific work. But the places where Carson’s artistry is more apparent are in her chapter introductions. She weaves her most vivid images in the first few paragraphs of each chapter, creating a more realistic experience for the reader before moving into more complex scientific writing.
While she’s good at translating the beauty of the natural world, the powerful emotions Carson raises with this imagery are rarely rosy. Not only is Silent Spring a descriptive scientific work and a great work of literature — it is also an accusation. She uses the word “evil” 10 times, the word “suffer” 35 times, and different forms of the word “death” a total of 213 times.
With this landmark book, Carson gracefully established herself as both an important figure of modern American literature and a pioneer of the 20th century’s environmental movement. Her words are effective and convincing, and more so because they are beautiful. Silent Spring is clearly a tapestry (挂毯) patiently woven — with a cause worth fighting for.
What is the opening of Silent Spring like?
A.It clearly reveals its writing purpose. B.It directly presents Carson’s arguments.
C.It starts with quotes from victims of pollution. D.It reads more like a fable than a science book.
Which part of Silent Spring best shows Carson’s literary skill?
A.The opening. B.The chapter titles.
C.The chapter introductions. D.The conclusion.
Why did Carson use emotional words like “death” repeatedly?
A.To make her writing less technical. B.To highlight the urgency of her warning.
C.To express her pessimism about the future. D.To contrast nature’s beauty with human destruction.
What’s the main focus of the passage?
A.Why Silent Spring still matters.
B.How powerful languages can be.
C.Why Silent Spring is both science and literature.
D.What role Carson plays in environmental history.
(本题10分)When I first came across All the Water in the World by Eiren Caffall, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. A doomsday-after story centered around a young girl’s survival journey? Interesting! But what really drew me in was the description of the destruction caused by climate change and the moving exploration of human courage. Little did I know, it would transform my understanding of both hope and loss.
Caffall’s writing is nothing short of amazing. Her vivid description brought to life the terrifying beauty of a world now more watery than land. Through Nonie’s eyes, the strangeness of floating through a drowned city is both amazing and frightening. The pictures of empty buildings under dark water painted a dream-like scene that stayed in my mind long after I set the book down.
The characters are rich and caring, each showing a fierce love for one another that adds warmth to the dangerous journey they start. Nonie’s early wisdom and her relationship with water indicate the connection people can have with nature, even when faced with its destructive side. It’s a narrative that speaks deeply, especially in today’s world.
Reflecting on my reading experience, I can confidently say that All the Water in the World is a narrative that stays with you — filled with beauty and terror, hope and despair. Readers who enjoy stories similar to Station Eleven or The Light Pirate will undoubtedly find themselves attracted by Caffall’s delicate yet powerful storytelling.
In conclusion, if you’re searching for a meaningful yet exciting book that explores survival and humanity’s fragile relationship with the environment, this book calls out to you. It’s a “don’t miss” doomsday-after story that will inspire long after you reach the final page.

Last winter, I volunteered at a local community center that offered free tutoring and after-school activities for children from low-income families. At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The children were quiet and reserved, and many struggled with basic reading or math.I felt nervous, unsure if I could truly make a difference.
During the first few days, I tried various simple tasks such as reading stories aloud, helping with homework, and encouraging them when they got answers right. Gradually, I noticed small changes. A boy who had never smiled before now laughed at jokes. A girl too shy to speak began raising her hand with confidence.
However, not everything went smoothly. Tom, a particularly stubborn boy, often refused to follow instructions. He interrupted lessons, played jokes on younger kids, and sometimes even walked out of the classroom in anger. Disheartened at first, I soon realized that punishment wasn’t the answer. One day after he stormed off, I followed him and said gently, “I know you’re not trying to be difficult. Do you want to talk about what’s bothering you?”
He stared at the floor in silence, but didn’t walk away. Although he didn’t open up immediately, he didn’t push me away, either. I knew I had to wait with patience.
Weeks later, the center decided to organize a talent show by the end of the semester.
Many children were excited, but Tom refused to participate. Some volunteers wanted to pressure him, but I chose a different path. I spoke with the staff and suggested starting a weekly “expression corner,” where kids could share poems, drawings, or stories at their own pace, no pressure, no grades. For Tom, I brought a book of playful poems and said, “This one’s about a mischievous cat. I think you’d bring it to life. Want to read it with me?”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

M: When he returns, no one recognizes him, I assume.
W: Exactly. Michael has a good heart, and he wants to find people who are unselfish and trustworthy. So he pretends to be an ordinary person and tests Laura, the woman he is supposed to marry, and the couple, who have cared for his uncle for years.
M: What are the choices for the ending?
W: I’m torn. I don’t know whether to reveal if Laura is good or bad. If she is good, Michael will keep the property and marry Laura. If she is bad, Michael will keep his identity secret. The apartment and money will then go to his uncle’s caretakers.
M: I like stories with sad endings, but for Hollywood appeal, you’d better go with the other option.
W: It’s reasonable. I love your advice.

【答案】18.B 19.A 20.C
W: Hi, everyone. I want to share with you what it’s like to organize a school music festival. Many think it’s just about the fun, but behind the scenes, it’s a huge test of our skills. First, I meet with the teacher in charge to confirm the overall schedule and key tasks for the day. Then I check in with all the different teams — stage, sound, and security — to make sure everyone is on the same page. Sometimes, the audio equipment has issues or a performer is running late, so I have to solve these problems on the spot. When all the preparations are finally set, my main job begins: ensuring the entire event flow and handling any unexpected situations. The biggest challenge is to keep everything running smoothly. After the festival, I help clean up the venue, thank every volunteer, and then finally go home to rest. It’s an incredibly long and tiring day, but I love creating this unforgettable memory for our entire grade.

根据第一段中“Prisoners make for eager poetry students, she says, precisely because self-expression is so rarely practiced behind bars.(她说,囚犯们成为了热切的诗歌学习者,正是因为在监狱中自我表达的机会非常少)”可知,囚犯们成为了热切的诗歌学习者,即囚犯们带着极大的热情学习诗歌。故选D项。
根据第二段中““They told me they wanted to put on paper all that they couldn’t say and do,” she recalls.(她回忆道:“他们告诉我,他们想把那些无法说出和无法做到的一切都写在纸上。”)”以及第三段中的“They began to understand that with poetic language they would be able to say absolutely whatever they wanted.(他们开始明白,用诗歌语言他们能够说出任何他们想说的话)”可知,诗歌成为了囚犯们表达那些他们不能说和做的事情的方式,是未说出口想法的宣泄口。故选D项。
根据第四段中的“Freedom is possible even inside a prison,” Domenech insists.“The only bars they have in their classroom is the word ‘bars’.(多梅内克坚持认为:“即使在监狱里,自由也是可能的。他们课堂上唯一的‘铁栅,即监狱’就是‘bars’这个词。”)”可知,这段话强调了诗歌带来的精神自由,即使身体受限,心灵仍可通过文字获得解放。故选B项。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的““Those men, some of them just huge when standing next to me, or the young boys—so young, but with an enormous pride — read their poems with their voices completely broken,” Domenech says. What I see week after week, is how they’re being transformed; how words are empowering them with a dignity they had never known, that they couldn’t even imagine.(多梅内克说:“那些男人,其中一些人站在我旁边时看起来非常高大,还有那些小男孩 —— 年纪那么小,却带着极大的自豪感 —— 他们读着自己的诗,声音完全哽咽了。”我每周都能看到的是,他们正在发生怎样的转变;文字如何赋予他们一种他们从未知晓、甚至无法想象的尊严)”可知,诗歌让囚犯们得到了改变,赋予了他们从未有过的尊严,让他们变得更强大自信。故选C项。
根据第三段“That is why its first sentence is so surprising: Silent Spring does not read like a textbook. It begins with a fable and is filled with beautiful, emotional writing and passion throughout.(这就是为什么它的第一句话会如此令人惊讶:《寂静的春天》读起来不像是一本教科书。它以一则寓言开篇,全书充满了优美动人的文字和强烈的感情色彩)”可知,《寂静的春天》这本书的开头读起来更像是一个寓言故事,而非一本科学著作。故选D。
29.细节理解题。根据第四段“But the places where Carson’s artistry is more apparent are in her chapter introductions. She weaves her most vivid images in the first few paragraphs of each chapter, creating a more realistic experience for the reader before moving into more complex scientific writing.(但卡逊作品中更具艺术表现力的部分体现在她的章节引言部分。她在每一章的前几段中巧妙地融入了最生动的意象,为读者营造出一种更为真实的阅读体验,然后再深入探讨更为复杂的科学内容)”可知,《寂静的春天》这部作品中第一章的介绍部分最能体现卡逊的文学才华,故选C。
30.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“While she’s good at translating the beauty of the natural world, the powerful emotions Carson raises with this imagery are rarely rosy. Not only is Silent Spring a descriptive scientific work and a great work of literature — it is also an accusation. She uses the word “evil”10 times, the word “suffer” 35 times, and different forms of the word “death” a total of 213 times.(虽然卡逊在描绘自然界的美方面颇为出色,但她通过这些意象所引发的强大情感却很少是美好的。《寂静的春天》不仅是一部描述性的科学著作和杰出的文学作品,它还是一份控诉书。她用了“邪恶”这个词10次,“受苦”这个词35次,而“死亡”这个词的各种形式总共出现了213次)”可知,卡逊通过多次使用“evil”、“suffer”、“death”这类带有强烈情感色彩的词汇,目的是强调环境问题的严重性,即,突出她所发出警告的紧迫性。故选B。
31.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“With this landmark book, Carson gracefully established herself as both an important figure of modern American literature and a pioneer of the 20th century’s environmental movement. Her words are effective and convincing, and more so because they are beautiful.Silent Spring is clearly a tapestry (挂毯) patiently woven — with a cause worth fighting for.(凭借这本具有里程碑意义的著作,卡逊成功地确立了自己作为现代美国文学重要人物以及20世纪环保运动先驱的地位。她的文字既有力又令人信服,而且更因其优美而显得更加出色。《寂静的春天》无疑是一幅精心编织的挂毯——背后有着值得为之奋斗的崇高目标)”结合文章主要介绍了蕾切尔·卡逊的《寂静的春天》,其开篇像寓言,文学性强,兼具科学与文学特质,是环保运动里程碑。可知,这篇文章的主要论述重点是《寂静的春天》为何既是科学著作又是文学作品。故选C。

根据第二段“Caffall’s writing is nothing short of amazing. Her vivid description brought to life the terrifying beauty of a world now more watery than land.Through Nonie’s eyes, the strangeness of floating through a drowned city is both amazing and frightening. The pictures of empty buildings under dark water painted a dream-like scene that stayed in my mind long after I set the book down.(Caffall的写作简直令人惊叹。她生动的描写使一个如今水比陆地还多的世界的恐怖之美栩栩如生。透过Nonie的眼睛,漂浮在被淹没的城市中的陌生感既令人惊奇又令人恐惧。黑暗的水下空荡荡的建筑物的画面描绘了一个梦幻般的场景,在我放下书后很久还留在我的脑海里)”可知,第二段主要描述了Caffall的写作风格,她通过生动的描写使读者仿佛身临其境。故选A项。
根据第三段“The characters are rich and caring, each showing a fierce love for one another that adds warmth to the dangerous journey they start.(人物丰富而富有同情心,每个人都表现出对彼此的强烈爱意,这为他们开始的危险旅程增添了温暖)”可知,这些人物在旅程中既经历了冒险,又感受到了彼此之间的温暖和关爱。故选A项。

(本题12.5分)Horace, the famous Roman poet who lived from 65 BC to 8 BC, once said, “The poet’s aim is to combine the delightful and the useful.” A poet will take insights into our world covered in fog and cut through that fog to reveal the truth beneath in their poetry. ____36(2.5分)____
Poetry is rich in wisdom and knowledge, yet it is often remarkably brief in form. We’re living in a world where everything becomes so fast-paced that it’s hard to focus on anything for long. ____37(2.5分)____ It allows us to start and finish something of value within life’s small windows of time - whether we’re waiting for the bus with our child, or seeking a meaningful thought to share at the dinner table. It can be spoken over our audience, or used to start a deeper discussion.
Similar to the way in which poetry reveals hidden, yet familiar truths, it can also reveal hidden yet familiar beauty. When a poet uses beautiful language to describe elements of beauty within our world, we may feel shocked. ____38(2.5分)____ Only then will we realize that we have never fully appreciated the things around us. 上文“A poet will take insights into our world covered in fog and cut through that fog to reveal the truth beneath in their poetry. (诗人会以自己对被迷雾笼罩的世界的洞察力,驱散迷雾,在他们的诗歌中揭示其下的真相。)”讲述了诗人通过诗歌揭示世界真相的作用。C选项“In this way, poetry helps us understand the world better. (这样,诗歌帮助我们更好地理解世界。)”顺承上文,总结诗歌通过揭示真相所带来的价值——“帮助我们更好地理解世界”。“In this way”指代了上文中诗人揭示真相的过程,使上下文逻辑紧密衔接。故选C项。
37.上文“We’re living in a world where everything becomes so fast-paced that it’s hard to focus on anything for long.(我们生活在一个一切都变得如此快节奏的世界里,以至于很难长时间专注于任何事情。)” A选项“A short poem is a gift for us.(一首短诗是给我们的礼物。)” 下文“It allows us to start and finish something of value within life’s small windows of time...(它让我们能在生活的小块时间里开始并完成一些有价值的事情……)” 故选A项。

39.下文“By thoughtfully engaging with poetry, we step into the perspectives of others. In the process, we will sharpen our awareness, deepen our empathy (同理心), and actively expand our emotional intelligence.(通过深入思考诗歌,我们走进了他人的视角。在这个过程中,我们将提高觉察力,加深同理心,并积极拓展情商。)”详细说明了诗歌如何帮助我们理解他人视角并提升情商。F选项“Poetry gives voice to our shared human emotions and experiences.(诗歌为我们共同的人类情感和经历发声。)”
40.上文“To pass down the power of poetry to the next generation, it’s best to develop a love and appreciation for it in our children from an early age.(为了将诗歌的力量传递给下一代,最好从小培养孩子对诗歌的热爱和欣赏。)” E选项“It involves spending plenty of time reading poems together.(这涉及到花大量时间一起读诗。)” 代词“It”指代上文的“develop a love and appreciation for it in our children from an early age”这一做法,上下文衔接紧密。

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
He hesitated and then nodded.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After the talent show, Tom changed.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
He hesitated and then nodded. Over the following weeks, we practiced together again and again in our spare time. With each poem, his confidence grew. I made sure to acknowledge his every effort, and soon, he even offered to perform at the talent show. The moment he stepped onto the stage, my heart swelled with pride. As soon as his performance came to an end, the room erupted into cheers and applause. For the first time, his once guarded face now lit up with a bright and genuine smile.
After the talent show, Tom changed. He stopped interrupting lessons and tried his best to help younger children with their homework. He even became a regular at Expression Corner and shared his favorite poems actively. Seeing him grow from a rebellious boy to a caring and confident one, I learned an important lesson: Struggling children like Tom don’t need pressure. Instead, they need patience, trust, support and a space to shine. That was the most valuable gift I have got from my voluntary work.
