For 30 years, Zhu had been a migrant worker in different cities. Although he only had a middle school education, his strong passion for reading never disappeared. The passion was inspired by his Chinese teacher in middle school who has published many articles in magazines.
“I also wanted to publish stories,” he said to himself. So he started to read. (本题10分)Jane Goodall’s final book, Hope for the Planet: Lessons from a Lifetime of Protecting Nature, integrates stories from her time in Gombe with practical advice for individuals, communities, and governments to address climate change and biodiversity loss — offering readers a deeply personal look at her decades of work and a clear call to action for saving the planet.
In the book, Goodall reflects on her most key moments: the day she watched David Greybeard use a tool, a discovery that redefined “humanity”, the heartbreak of witnessing chimpanzee (黑猩猩) habitats destroyed by deforestation, and the joy of seeing Roots & Shoots grow into a global movement. “I’ve seen the worst of what humans can do,” she writes. “But I’ve also seen the best — the kindness of a farmer who stops cutting down trees to save chimpanzees, the passion of a 10-year-old who organises a park cleanup, the courage of scientists fighting for truth. That’s where hope lives.”
Goodall also addresses common myths about conservation, arguing that “saving the planet isn’t just for ‘experts’ — it’s for everyone.” She offers simple steps: reducing meat consumption, supporting sustainable brands, planting native plants, and talking to others about climate change. “You don’t need to be a scientist or a politician to make a difference,” she writes. “You just need to care-and to act.”
“Jane writes like a friend sharing wisdom,” says environmental journalist Bill McKibben in his review for The New York Times. “She doesn’t scare readers with doomsday scenarios (末日场景) — she inspires them with stories of success. This book isn’t just a memoir (回忆录); it’s a handbook for hope.”
The Jane Goodall Institute has announced that all proceeds from the book will go to supporting Roots & Shoots and chimpanzee conservation in Gombe. “Jane wanted this book to be a gift to future generations,” says Bill. “It’s her way of saying.' I’m no longer here, but you have everything you need to keep fighting.'”

The Whispers of Rock: A Geologist’s Personal and Cultural Thoughts
Reviewed by Josh Trapani
In the book The Whispers of Rock, geologist Anjana Khatwa writes about the strong ties between native cultures and the Earth’s rocks and landscapes. She believes that today’s society needs to find this connection again. The book includes different native stories linked to important places, from Japan’s mountains to New Zealand’s volcano-shaped lands and the Black Hills in North America.
Although the book covers many cultures, its argument is not really new. Sometimes Khatwa’s writing sounds like she is teaching a moral lesson. It creates oversimplified comparison. Native peoples live harmoniously with nature while others only make use of nature. She worries that scientists may not accept views from non-Western cultures, but there is no need to worry.
The best parts of the book are Khatwa’s personal stories. She bravely shares both happy and sad moments from her life. Studying rocks helped her see things clearly and find comfort. Her memory of visiting Kenya is especially touching. At that place, she first became interested in geology as a young girl.
Khatwa sees human life stories in the changes of rocks. Some rocks go through great heat and pressure to become new and stronger, while other rocks are torn from their original places and left in foreign lands. However, reading this book made me think about my own different interest in geology. I am interested in history rather than human problems. I think the Earth’s history is very long, but human problems are very small. Khatwa’s method feels like teaching at times. But her central idea is very important. It is this: if we connect with the Earth and stay open to various ideas, we can better protect our world and ourselves.
How does Josh introduce the book’s content in paragraph one?
A.By listing Khatwa’s academic achievements.
B.By quoting positive reviews from readers.
C.By stating its theme and giving examples.
D.By comparing it with other geology books.
What is a shortcoming of the book according to the passage?
A.Ignoring Western scientific views. B.Covering cultures of few places.
C.Failing to include personal stories. D.Lacking creativity in argument.
How does Josh’s view of geology differ from Khatwa’s?
A.He thinks rocks ignore human life. B.He cares more about Earth’s history.
C.He wants geology to save the planet. D.He feels geology is protecting nature.
What’s Josh’s attitude toward the book?
A.Objective. B.Critical. C.Unclear. D.Approving.

Last winter, I volunteered at a local community center that offered free tutoring and after-school activities for children from low-income families. At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The children were quiet and reserved, and many struggled with basic reading or math.I felt nervous, unsure if I could truly make a difference.
During the first few days, I tried various simple tasks such as reading stories aloud, helping with homework, and encouraging them when they got answers right. Gradually, I noticed small changes. A boy who had never smiled before now laughed at jokes. A girl too shy to speak began raising her hand with confidence.
However, not everything went smoothly. Tom, a particularly stubborn boy, often refused to follow instructions. He interrupted lessons, played jokes on younger kids, and sometimes even walked out of the classroom in anger. Disheartened at first, I soon realized that punishment wasn’t the answer. One day after he stormed off, I followed him and said gently, “I know you’re not trying to be difficult. Do you want to talk about what’s bothering you?”
He stared at the floor in silence, but didn’t walk away. Although he didn’t open up immediately, he didn’t push me away, either. I knew I had to wait with patience.
Weeks later, the center decided to organize a talent show by the end of the semester.
Many children were excited, but Tom refused to participate. Some volunteers wanted to pressure him, but I chose a different path. I spoke with the staff and suggested starting a weekly “expression corner,” where kids could share poems, drawings, or stories at their own pace, no pressure, no grades. For Tom, I brought a book of playful poems and said, “This one’s about a mischievous cat. I think you’d bring it to life. Want to read it with me?”

M: I don’t mind, really. All the male roles seem pretty cool. What about you?

【答案】18.B 19.A 20.C
Today we will talk about an expression from the famous book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The book was published in 1865. The story is about a young girl falling, falling, falling...for a long time down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world.
In this strange world are some of the most well-known characters in children’s literature. Many of them, and other expressions from the book, have found their way into American English.
The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit. The White Rabbit is not your usual rabbit. First of all, he is wearing a vest and carrying a pocket watch. Running past Alice, he says, “I’m late! I’m late! For a very important date! No time to say hello or goodbye. I’m late! I’m late! I’m late!”
Alice chases after him, and that is where her adventures begin. In English, chasing a white rabbit means to chase the impossible, a dream. The White Rabbit is so strange that Alice cannot help but follow him. As she chases after him, she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland and begins her mysterious journey.

No matter where he worked, he went to local bookstores regularly with a notebook in order to write down wonderful paragraphs and memorize them. In this way, he got to know the history, traditions and landscapes of different places. Over the years, he has read thousands of poems and can recite over 1,000 of them. When reading poems from the Tang Dynasty and poems written by Chairman Mao Zedong, he appreciated the beauty of their language. He said, “One can get inspired to have a rich spiritual world and powerful mind from reading.” Whenever he faces any challenge, he thinks of Chairman Mao’s words: “Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it.”
In 2023, he finally appeared in the Chinese Poetry Competition hosted by CCTV and won the second place, impressing the audience deeply with his good performance. The local government decided to hire him as a staff member at the cultural center. Although his income is less than before, this job gives him more time to explore poems.
What is Goodall’s Hope for the Planet aimed at?
A.Reflecting on her past experiences. B.Providing guidance for wild survival.
C.Demonstrating her insight into Earth saving. D.Recording her observations on chimpanzees.
What does Goodall want to convey by mentioning different people?
A.Individual action matters to nature. B.Humanity needs to be redefined.
C.Roots & Shoots is growing globally. D.Chimpanzees live well in nature.
What does the underlined word “myths” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Behaviors. B.Legends. C.Theories. D.Misunderstandings.

根据第二段中“But I’ve also seen the best — the kindness of a farmer who stops cutting down trees to save chimpanzees, the passion of a 10-year-old who organises a park cleanup, the courage of scientists fighting for truth. That’s where hope lives.(但我也看到了最好的一面——一位农民为了拯救黑猩猩而停止砍伐树木的善良,一个10岁孩子组织公园清理活动的热情,科学家们为真理而战的勇气。希望就在那里。)”可知,古道尔提到不同的人是想传达个人的行动对自然很重要。故选A。
根据第三段中“Goodall also addresses common myths about conservation, arguing that “saving the planet isn’t just for ‘experts’ — it’s for everyone.” She offers simple steps: reducing meat consumption, supporting sustainable brands, planting native plants, and talking to others about climate change.(古道尔还谈到了关于保护自然的常见myths,认为“拯救地球不仅仅是‘专家’的事——而是每个人的事。”她提出了一些简单的步骤:减少肉类消费,支持可持续品牌,种植本地植物,与他人谈论气候变化。)”可知,古道尔认为拯救地球是每个人的事,并给出了具体的做法,由此可推知,她是在纠正人们对于保护自然的常见误解,所以myths意思是“误解”,与Misunderstandings意义相近。故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段““Jane writes like a friend sharing wisdom,” says environmental journalist Bill McKibben in his review for The New York Times.“She doesn’t scare readers with doomsday scenarios (末日场景) — she inspires them with stories of success. This book isn’t just a memoir (回忆录); it’s a handbook for hope.”(“简写起来就像一个分享智慧的朋友,”环境记者比尔·麦基本在为《纽约时报》撰写的评论中说。“她不会用末日场景吓唬读者——而是用成功的故事激励他们。这本书不仅仅是一本回忆录;它是一本希望手册。”)”可知,评论家认为这本书有启发性和鼓励性。故选C。
(本题10分)The Whispers of Rock: A Geologist’s Personal and Cultural Thoughts
【答案】32.C 33.D 34.B 35.A
文章主要介绍了Josh Trapani对《The Whispers of Rock》一书的书评。
根据第一段中“In the book The Whispers of Rock, geologist Anjana Khatwa writes about the strong ties between native cultures and the Earth’s rocks and landscapes. (在《The Whispers of Rock》一书中,地质学家安贾娜·卡特瓦(Anjana Khatwa)描述了本土文化与地球岩石和景观之间的紧密联系)”以及“The book includes different native stories linked to important places, from Japan’s mountains to New Zealand’s volcano-shaped lands and the Black Hills in North America. (这本书包含了与重要地点相关的不同本土故事,从日本的山脉到新西兰的火山地貌,再到北美的黑山)”可知,Josh通过陈述这本书的主题,即本土文化与地球岩石和景观之间的紧密联系,并举例日本的山脉、新西兰的火山地貌和北美的黑山等重要地点相关的本土故事来介绍书的内容。故选C项。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Although the book covers many cultures, its argument is not really new.(虽然这本书涵盖了许多文化,但它的论点并不新鲜)”可知,这本书的缺点是论点并不新鲜,缺乏创新性。故选D项。
根据最后一段中“Khatwa sees human life stories in the changes of rocks.(Khatwa从岩石的变化中看到了人类生活的故事)”和“However, reading this book made me think about my own different interest in geology.I am interested in history rather than human problems.I think the Earth’s history is very long, but human problems are very small.(然而,读这本书让我想到了我自己对地质学的不同兴趣。我对历史感兴趣,而不是人类的问题。我认为地球的历史很长,但人类的问题很小)”可知,作者Josh对地质学的兴趣在于地球的历史,而不是人类的问题,这与Khatwa的观点不同。故选B项。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Khatwa’s method feels like teaching at times. But her central idea is very important. It is this: if we connect with the Earth and stay open to various ideas, we can better protect our world and ourselves.(Khatwa的方法有时给人的感觉像是在进行教导。但她的核心观点却非常重要。那就是:如果我们与大地建立联系,并保持对各种想法的开放态度,我们就能更好地保护我们的世界以及自己)”以及全文对书的内容、优缺点以及作者观点与书中观点差异的客观描述可知,Josh对这本书的态度是客观的。故选A项。

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
He hesitated and then nodded.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After the talent show, Tom changed.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
He hesitated and then nodded. Over the following weeks, we practiced together again and again in our spare time. With each poem, his confidence grew. I made sure to acknowledge his every effort, and soon, he even offered to perform at the talent show. The moment he stepped onto the stage, my heart swelled with pride. As soon as his performance came to an end, the room erupted into cheers and applause. For the first time, his once guarded face now lit up with a bright and genuine smile.
After the talent show, Tom changed. He stopped interrupting lessons and tried his best to help younger children with their homework. He even became a regular at Expression Corner and shared his favorite poems actively. Seeing him grow from a rebellious boy to a caring and confident one, I learned an important lesson: Struggling children like Tom don’t need pressure. Instead, they need patience, trust, support and a space to shine. That was the most valuable gift I have got from my voluntary work.
①表演:perform/put on a show/give a performance
②帮助:help/assist/give a hand
①自信:confidence/self-belief/self-assurance
②由衷的:genuine/sincere/heartfelt
【点睛】[高分句型 1] The moment he stepped onto the stage, my heart swelled with pride.
