Niagara Falls State Park was filled with celebration and misty magic this week as a 105-year-old woman checked a major item off her list of dreams.
Born in 1920, Emily Bula has lived through monumental moments in history and created a life filled with “love, laughter, polka dancing, and incredible stories”, according to a Facebook post from Niagara Falls State Park. However, there was still one adventure she hadn’t experienced. That adventure was getting up close to the roaring Niagara Falls aboard the legendary Maid of the Mist.
That dream became a reality thanks to the teamwork of Harris Hill Nursing Facility and the staff of the Maid of the Mist. On the morning of July 24th, Emily boarded the tour boat surrounded by family, nursing home staff, and supporters.
“Emily Bula… fulfilled her life-long dream of riding the legendary Maid of the Mist!” the park’s post reads. “With help from the amazing team at Harris Hill Nursing Facility and the Maid of the Mist, Emily boarded the all-electric boat this morning surrounded by loved ones, staff, and supporters — proving it’s never too late to chase a dream.” As the boat edged closer to the base of Horseshoe Falls, Emily experienced the powerful spray (浪花) firsthand. The moment was not just emotional for Emily and her family, but also for everyone watching.
For those unfamiliar, the Maid of the Mist is a must-do boat tour operating out of Niagara Falls State Park since 1846. The tour offers visitors a thrilling experience as it takes them right into the basin of the falls.
As for Emily, she’s now part of an elite (精英) group. She joins the ranks of America’s oldest citizens. According to the Gerontology Research Group, the oldest living person in the United States is currently over 115 years old. (本题10分)Great landscape art can take you into a world: the splendid hills of Georgia O’Keeffe’s Southwestern scenery; the nature-like calm of Monet’s water lilies. But for years, amateurs in cities have sketched (速写) everyday sights — buildings and sidewalks — and discovered beauty there.
The idea of “urban sketchers” started almost 20 years ago. Gabriel Campanario had just moved to Seattle and was looking to get to know his new home. He started drawing, capturing passers-by, mountains and buildings. He posted his drawings online and invited other artists to join the online group, which led to face-to-face groups. And then more chapters, and then international gatherings. Urban Sketchers now reports more than 500 chapters in over 70 countries. Sketchers can meet up with groups in other towns. Even without a common language, they can still relate to one another through their sketchbooks.
Urban Sketchers Portland, one of the earliest chapters, holds monthly meetups. Most participants are amateurs, with a few more-experienced artists. A former architect Bob Boileau appreciates that after a career spent drawing straight lines, it is nice to just get something irregular, put some color and draw how he feels.
At a recent meetup at Portland’s Union Station, sketchers gathered around the train station, capturing its red bricks and tall clock tower with watercolors, pen and ink, or colored pencils. City scenes are arguably not as splendid as most rural landscapes, but Noor Alkurd noted the boxes and lines of cities are great for beginners. He also thought landscapes were overrated and found cityscapes fun, adding that drawing helped him notice urban scenes and everyday details he once took for granted.
At the end of each sketch session, participants share and appreciate their works, with the main purpose of recording a special moment, learning from others’ views, and discovering more about their daily city.
Why did Gabriel Campanario start to draw Seattle?
A.To familiarize himself with the city.
B.To show his painting skills online.
C.To attract more foreign sketchers.
D.To build international art groups.
What can we know about Bob Boileau?
A.He misses his former career.
B.He sketches to impress others.
C.He is fond of drawing straight lines.
D.He enjoys the freedom of sketching.
How does urban sketching influence Noor Alkurd?
A.It improves his painting speed.
B.It teaches him to use different tools.
C.It encourages him to draw landscapes.
D.It sharpens his eyes for ordinary moments.
What is the text mainly about?
A.Urban sketchers bond with each other.
B.Urban sketchers find beauty in the city.
C.Sketching meetups reshape modern art.
D.Sketching becomes popular among artists.
【答案】28.A 29.D 30.D 31.B
根据第二段中“Gabriel Campanario had just moved to Seattle and was looking to get to know his new home. He started drawing, capturing passers-by, mountains and buildings.(Gabriel Campanario刚搬到西雅图,正试图熟悉这个新地方。他开始绘画,捕捉路人、山脉和建筑物的景象)”可知,Gabriel Campanario刚开始画画是为了了解、熟悉新城市。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“A former architect Bob Boileau appreciates that after a career spent drawing straight lines, it is nice to just get something irregular, put some color and draw how he feels.(前建筑师Bob Boileau深感,在其职业生涯中一直致力于绘制直线之后,能创作出一些不规则的图形、添加色彩并按照自己的感受进行描绘,是一件很美妙的事情)”可知,Bob Boileau之前是建筑师,职业生涯一直画直线,现在速写可以随心所欲画不规则的内容,跟着自己的感觉创作,说明他享受速写带来的自由。
根据第四段中“City scenes are arguably not as splendid as most rural landscapes, but Noor Alkurd noted the boxes and lines of cities are great for beginners. He also thought landscapes were overrated and found cityscapes fun, adding that drawing helped him notice urban scenes and everyday details he once took for granted.(城市景象或许不如大多数乡村风景那样壮观,但Noor Alkurd指出,城市的方格和线条对初学者来说非常有用。
(本题10分)A massive concrete-and-glass structure hangs above traffic on Wilshire Boulevard. It is the new home of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the largest art museum in western America. Its daring architecture is not the only unusual thing about it.
“We’ve given up traditional categories of geography,” says Michael Govan, LACMA’s director. “The idea is to wander.” The museum’s single floor treats all artworks equally: no one movement is presented as more important than another. The museum is loosely organized around oceans to emphasize trade and cultural exchange. The Indian Ocean section, for example, includes Turkish ceramics (瓷器) with blue-and-white flower patterns, influenced by earlier Chinese designs.
LACMA’s break from conventional organization symbolizes a movement towards global galleries as the global economy expands. London’s Tate Modern traditionally centered on Western European art. However, it rearranged its works by theme after 2000 to highlight cultural links. The press hated it. In 2019, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) rejected fixed long-term displays. Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” will probably always be on view but the neighbouring wall will sometimes hold photography. Such an adaptable approach allows for unexpected encounters. Yet not everyone may appreciate it.
What is a thoughtful contrast to one visitor may be hard to understand for another. At LACMA a giant coffee table shows off ceramics from various eras. Why? Visitors who can scan QR codes will find out; the rest will merely wonder. But if such experiments fail to impress, curators (策展人) can rearrange the art again.
Museums should not be inflexible palaces for artworks, many curators argue: they should reflect their surroundings and times. At the new LACMA, says Govan, “We don’t go into a dark box and somebody tells us what to think.” Rather, it tries to be in conversation with Los Angeles (LA). Architecturally, the museum’s uneven shape and floor-to-ceiling windows frame the palm trees (棕榈树) and hills, putting LA itself on display.
What is special about the new LACMA?
A.Displaying artworks flexibly. B.Stressing ocean movement.
C.Treating artworks differently. D.Featuring Chinese designs.
Why does the writer mention Tate Modern and MoMA?
A.To compare them with LACMA. B.To highlight an exhibition trend.
C.To promote long-term displays. D.To explain economic globalization.
What is a potential problem with the new exhibition style?
A.It limits the variety of artworks. B.It depends on QR code technology.
C.It brings little profit to art galleries. D.It causes confusion for some visitors.
What can be inferred about the new museum from the last paragraph?
A.It values architecture over artworks. B.It may raise argument over art styles.
C.It can mirror environments and times. D.It guides how visitors view the art world.
【答案】32.A 33.B 34.D 35.C
根据第二段“The museum’s single floor treats all artworks equally: no one movement is presented as more important than another.(博物馆的单层展厅对所有艺术作品一视同仁:没有任何一种艺术运动被视作比另一种更重要)”可知,新LACMA展出艺术作品具有灵活性。
根据第三段“LACMA’s break from conventional organization symbolizes a movement towards global galleries as the global economy expands.London’s Tate Modern traditionally centered on Western European art. However, it rearranged its works by theme after 2000 to highlight cultural links. The press hated it.In 2019, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) rejected fixed long-term displays.(洛杉矶郡艺术博物馆(LACMA)的组织方式突破传统,象征着在全球经济不断扩张的背景下,向全球性美术馆发展。伦敦泰特现代美术馆过去一直以西欧艺术为中心,但自2000年后,它根据主题重新编排展品,以突出文化联系。这一做法遭到媒体的批评。2019年,现代艺术博物馆(MoMA)也拒绝了长期固定展览模式)”可知,作者提到泰特现代美术馆和现代艺术博物馆是为了突出展览趋势。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段“What is a thoughtful contrast to one visitor may be hard to understand for another. At LACMA a giant coffee table shows off ceramics from various eras. Why? Visitors who can scan QR codes will find out; the rest will merely wonder.(对一位访客而言,一个深思熟虑的对比可能难以被另一位理解。在洛杉矶县艺术博物馆(LACMA),一张巨大的咖啡桌陈列着不同时代的陶瓷作品。为什么?扫描二维码的游客会明白;其余人则只能感到纳闷)”可知,新展览风格可能存在的一个潜在问题是:它会让部分参观者感到困惑。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Museums should not be inflexible palaces for artworks, many curators argue: they should reflect their surroundings and times.(许多策展人认为,博物馆不应是僵化的艺术宫殿,而应反映其周围环境和时代背景)”可知,新博物馆能够反映环境和时代。
(本题12.5分)Many believe that you must have born talent to become an artist. Talent refers to a natural ability for a particular skill. ____36(2.5分)____ Many artists displayed extraordinary abilities at a young age. Talented individuals may find it easier to learn and master artistic techniques. This can result in quicker progress and potentially more innovative work.
However, art involves a vast number of skills that can be learned over time. Artists who put in consistent effort over long periods often see significant improvements. There are many artists who started with little apparent talent but became successful through dedication. ____37(2.5分)____
Hard work usually means that there is a strong motivation behind it. Motivation often determines how persistently an artist practices and learns. Toughness and adaptability are important qualities going hand in hand with hard work. Toughness helps artists handle criticism and setbacks. ____38(2.5分)____
So what is more important? Often, the most successful artists possess both natural talent and a high work criterion. Talent might provide an initial advantage, but hard work ensures continuous growth. ____39(2.5分)____ Artists must be committed to lifelong learning, which requires hard work regardless of talent.
____40(2.5分)____ Access to quality education can greatly enhance an artist’s development. Teachers can provide valuable feedback, introduce new techniques, and inspire creativity. Regular exposure to different art forms, cultures, and experiences can also enrich an artist's work. Traveling, attending exhibitions, and studying art history contribute to a deeper understanding and broader perspective.
A.Van Gogh is one example.
B.Other factors can help, too.
C.Working with other artists is crucial.
D.Besides, the art world is dynamic and evolving.
E.Being an artist is not dependent on talent but hard work.
F.Adaptability allows them to evolve with trends and technologies.
G.In art, this emerges as a good understanding of color, composition, or form.
【答案】36.G 37.A 38.F 39.D 40.B
根据前文“Talent refers to a natural ability for a particular skill.(天赋指的是掌握某项特定技能的天生能力。)”以及后文 “Many artists displayed extraordinary abilities at a young age.(许多艺术家在年少时就展现出非凡的能力。)” G“In art, this emerges as a good understanding of color, composition, or form.(在艺术领域,这种天赋表现为对色彩、构图或形态的良好感知。)”
37.根据前文“There are many artists who started with little apparent talent but became successful through dedication.(有许多艺术家起初并无明显天赋,却凭借全身心的投入获得了成功。)” A“Van Gogh is one example.(梵高就是其中一个例子。)”

Figures from Bert’s own life ______ among those honored;主语figures为复数,陈述客观事实,应使用一般现在时,所以谓语动词应为复数形式are。

I’ve been drawing cartoons since I was eight years old, bringing to life the characters that filled my imagination. Over the years, my drawings became more expressive, but it wasn’t until I attended a lecture by Dr. Patch Adams that my art took on a new direction. He spoke about using humor to heal (治愈), reaching people in ways that medicine alone sometimes couldn’t. “A simple drawing could do more than just fill space on paper; it could bring light to even the darkest moments,” he said. His words sparked an idea in me: I decided to use my art to cheer patients in the hospital.
By chance, I discovered that our local hospital had an arts-in-medicine program. Without a clear plan, I nervously called the head nurse and introduced myself as a “clinical cartoonist”. There was a brief silence before she asked, “What exactly is that?” I laughed awkwardly, admitting that it was something I had just made up. To my surprise, she invited me to come in and give it a try.
Walking into the hospital for the first time with my sketchpad (素描簿), I felt both excitement and fear. I was used to spending hours alone, creating art. But now, I was in a children’s ward (病房), surrounded by patients and families facing real struggles. Could my humor fit into this space? Could my drawings bring any comfort to those in pain?
That day, I met my first patient, Sarah, a 5-year-old girl who lay quietly in her bed, with no light in her eyes. Her mother sat quietly beside her to offer her comfort. I tried to introduce myself in a playful way, but Sarah didn’t seem to show any interest. Her look was fixed on the ceiling, distant and disconnected. The room was heavy with quiet tension. I knew I had to do something to break the ice. I pulled out my sketchpad and announced, “I’m going to draw something for you!” Sarah’s mother offered a faint smile, but Sarah didn’t react.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I knew I couldn’t give up and began to create my cartoon character.

Looking at my drawings, Sarah finally broke into a long-lost smile.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I knew I couldn’t give up and began to create my cartoon character. After a while, several funny drawings appeared on the paper, which demonstrated a playful panda with a heart-shaped nose and a hat that seemed to dance on its head. I sketched with a gentle hand, each line a whisper of hope, trying to capture Sarah’s attention. The panda’s eyes twinkled with a friendly mischief, and its arms were open wide, as if inviting her into a world of joy and imagination. The atmosphere in the room seemed to warm up, with me waiting for Sarah’s reaction.
Looking at my drawings, Sarah finally broke into a long-lost smile. Her eyes finally met mine, bright with a child’s wonder. The room, once heavy with tension, now echoed with the soft laughter of a child finding a magical world in a simple, yet powerful cartoon. Tears of gratitude welled up in her mother’s eyes as she watched her daughter’s face lit up with happiness. The panda had not only filled the space on the paper but had also cured the pain in Sarah’s heart, bringing the light back to her eyes.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I knew I couldn’t give up and began to create my cartoon character.

Looking at my drawings, Sarah finally broke into a long-lost smile.
