These days, streaming is more straightforward than ever.If you have a newer TV,all you have to do is
select one of the built-in apps and sign up to start watching. You have more options with devices such as an Apple
TV,Netflix or Hulu, and you don't have to be a tech expert to opcrate them.
Netnix
The granddaddy of streaming built a dynasty on cngaging shows with established fan bases, like Fricnds
and Grey'Anatomy. Then Netflix went all in on award-winning and fan-favorite originals such as House ofCards.
Now it's also the go-to for comedy spccials with the likes of Jim Gaffigan and more, making it vital to stand-up
fans.
Hulu
Once little more than Netflix's replacement,Hulu is coming for top billing.Since Disney purchased the
streamer in 2019,it has turned Hulu into a giant:a basic subscription includes original Hulu shows Only Murders
in the Building.Go for Hulu's Live TV and you'll get 95-plus channels including the big networks,ABC,NBC,
CBS and Fox.
Apple TV+
Apple's is the only major service with original programming and no ads. That means no list of old shows to
binge-watch,only the new cutting-edge series and films produced by Apple Studios that tend to cap best-of
year-end roundups,including Ted Lasso.

When I signed my first book deal in2018,looking forward to the release of my debut(首次亮相)novel in
2020,I knew I was about to embark on an amazing adventure.
I went into my first contract(detennined to make it work.By that I meant to be successful enough to
guarantee that I'd be signed again and again.I thought it was a casc of Go Big or Go Home.
Admittedly, debuting is always stressful, but I definitely made things more difficult by pressuring myself to
promote and beating myself up when anything didn't go well. The odds were not in my favour, with covid-19

spreading and my editor leaving. The thing I feared most happened:my contract wasn't renewed.I felt absolutely
depressed, embarrassed too, that my first book hadn't sold well.
Luckily,I'm in a group of debut authors,so had plenty of support Over time I watched other people's
journeys with interest. Some debuted straight into the bestseller lists;some had film rights optioned.Others, like
me,had a less-than-ideal start Some had even more difficult times-lost agents,cancelled contracts,dashed
hopes. The most important thing I leamned is that there is no one fixed path to success and that courage and
determination go a long way.I've seen authors with a poor sales record getting another shot;those wbo didn't
start well sometimes find huge success with their sccond novel.Thcre are so many different paths and always new
things to dream about.
Those who've read my column from the start might have seen my blind optimism,my crash,my reflection
on writerly life. However,I'm pleased that I'm able to write this,my last column, and say that I am finally
optimistic, excited, even, about the future, about my ability to diversify, experiment and network and above all,
write and write and write.I know there will be lows, but as long as I can write,I'll be alright

Life places us in a complex web of relationships with other people. Our humanness arises out of these
relationships in the course of social interaction. Moreover, our humanness must be sustained through social
interaction-and fairly constantly so.When an association continues long enough for two people to become
linked together by a relatively stable set of expectations,it is called a relationship.
邻4页共9页
Pcople are bound within relationships by two types of boods:expressive ties and instrumeatal(ties.
Expressive tier are social links formed when we emotionally invest ourselves in and commit ourselves to other
pcople.Through association with pcople who are meaningful to us,we achieve a sense of sccurity, love,
acceptance, companionship, and personal worth.Instrumental ties are social links formed when we cooperate with
other people to achieve some goal.Occasionally, this may mean working with instead of against competitors.
More often,we simply cooperate with others to reach some end without endowing the relationship with any larger
significance.
Sociologists have built on the distinction between expressive and instrumental ties to distinguish between two
types of groups:primary and secondary.A primary group involves two or more pcople who enjoy a dircct,
intimate, cohesive relationship with one another.Expressive ties predominate in primary groups;we view the
people as ends in themsclves and valuable in their own right.A secondary group entails two or more people who
are involved in an impersonal relationship and have come togetber for a specific, practical purpose.Instrumental
ties predominate in secondary groups;we perceive people as means to ends rather than as ends in their own right
Somctimes primary group relationships evolve out of sccondary group relationships. This bappens in many work
settings.Pcople on the job often develop close relationships with coworkers as they come to share gripes, jokes,
gossip,and satisfactions.
12.According to paragraph 1,which of the following is true of a relationship?
A.It is a structure of associations with many people.
B.It should be studied in the course of a social interaction.
C.It places great demands on people.
D.It develops gradually over time.
13.Which of the following can be inferred about instrumental ties from the author's mention of working with
competitors in paragraph 2?
A.Instrumental ties can develop even in situations in which people would normally not cooperate.
B.
Instrumental ties require as much emotional investment as expressive ties.
C.Instrumental ties involve sccurity,love,and acceptance.
D.Instrumental ties should be expected to be significant.
14.According to paragraph 3.what do sociologists see as the main difference between primary and secondary
groups?
A.Primary groups consist of people working together while secondary groups exist outside of work settings.
B.In primary groups people are seen as means while in secondary groups people are seen as ends.
第5页共9页
C.Primary groups involve personal relationships while secondary groups are mainly practical in purpose.
D.Primary groups are generally small while secondary groups often contain more than two people.
15.Which of the following can be inferred from the author's claim in paragraph 3 that primary group
relationships sometimes evolve out of secondary group relationships?
A.Secondary group relationships begin by being primary group relationships.
B.A secondary group relationship that is highly visible quickly becomes a primary group relationship.
C.Sociologists believe that only primary group relationships are important to society.
D.Even in secondary groups, frequent communication serves to bring people into close relationships.

Kent State University in Ohio.In one 2013 study, students took practice tests over several weeks. On the final test,
they scored more than a full letter grade better,on average, than studeats who studied the way they pormally had.
Test yourself
Nebel's preferred study habit is one of the best ways. Before big tests,Nebel's mom quizzed her on the
material."Now I know that was retrieval()practice,she says.As Nebel got older,she quizzed herself.
"19,"Nebel suggests."Put questions on one side and the answers on the other side and try to quiz
yourself the way the teacher asks questions,"she adds.
Dig deeper
It's hard to remember a string of facts and figures if you don't push further.Ask why things are a certain way.
