Language Exchange Programme
The Language Exchange Programme allows students in pairs to communicate in two different languages they wish to share and learn each week. Students take short notes after each partner meeting, showing the language skills practised and the topics discussed. Each pair meets three times throughout the term with a teacher who decides if the exchange is effective. Students who successfully complete the programme will receive one credit (学分) each.
Requirements for completion:
One welcoming activity on the second Friday of the term
18 weekly one-hour pair meetings
Weekly progress reports for all pair meetings
At least three pair-teacher meetings
One five-minute final video
Sign up!
The sign-up and registration (注册) process is as follows:
Students sign up and indicate the languages they can speak and languages they are interested in learning.
Based on the information entered by each student, possible pairs are identified.
Proficiency levels (熟练程度) are checked through coursework or placement tests.
Once a pair has been determined to be suitable, the students will be contacted individually with a special permission number to register for the programme.
Reminders:
Signing up for the programme does not necessarily mean that you will be able to register and participate. Pairs are matched by languages of interest and proficiency levels. Since there are many factors involved in the pairing process, not all students who sign up will be matched with a partner and be able to register for the programme.
1. What can students do in this programme?

The Grammys celebrate the best in music, but, behind every songwriter, performer, and producer that makes it to that stage are music teachers and educators who inspired them from a very young age. That’s why the Grammy Awards also hands out a Music Educator Award, which recognizes those who have contributed significantly to and really care about music education.
This year, the award went to Annie Ray, the performing arts department chair and orchestra (管弦乐队) director at Annandale High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. With the creation of the Crescendo Orchestra, she works to make music accessible to all students, especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (智力和发展障碍). Additionally, she created a parent orchestra, in which 200 caregivers learn to play the same instrument as their child every year.
Ray won a $ 10,000 prize and the same amount for her school’s music program. In an interview, Ray credited her pupils for this recognition. “This is the students’ award,” she said. “I’m just lucky enough to have been a part of their journey and their process and to have been taught by them.” The educator also got to attend the main Grammy ceremony, where musicians and other celebrities approached Ray to praise her efforts. “Many people came to tell me that a music educator changed their life,” Ray said. “And that was really touching.”
Now, Ray will use the prize money to buy instruments — something the school had struggled to do. She also plans to create an ongoing scholarship for students who want to become musicians and music educators when they graduate.
For Ray, the moment appears to be full circle, since it was a music teacher who first changed her life at age 5, when she learned to play the harp (竖琴). “The reason why I am where I am is that a teacher changed my life and made me want to be a music educator,” she said.
4. What is the purpose of the Music Educator Award?
A. To raise funds for school music programs.
B. To reward the best songwriters in the industry.
C. To help excellent music students with disabilities.
D. To honor those who greatly influence music education.
5. How did Ray feel about winning the award?
A. Confident. B. Doubtful. C. Grateful. D. Nervous.
6. What can we infer about the school’s financial situation before Ray won the award?
A. It was well-funded by the local government.
B. It had difficulty affording musical instruments.
C. It offered rich scholarships for music learners.
D. It refused to spend money on music programs.
7. What does Ray’s experience mainly show?
A. Teachers can pass hope and dreams on.
B. Musical gift can decide one’s future path.
C. Awards and public praise bring endless benefits.
D. Family education can inspire children’s lifelong hobbies.

Telemedicine refers to an electronic way of communication in the field of medicine. Patients, doctors, experts, and medical caregivers may exchange medical information by electronic means such as video conferencing, email, private messaging in smartphones, and other wireless electronic devices. The basic goal of electronic communication in the medical field is to provide the best possible care for patients and hopefully give them greater chances of having a speedy recovery or health improvement.
Patients in rural areas and other remote places, for example, may benefit from telemedicine by way of getting the medical services as if they were physically present in a hospital. Through video conferencing, patients may report their worries to their doctors even if they are in remote areas.
Telemedicine also enables doctors to easily and quickly communicate with other medical experts and caregivers concerning a patient’s condition. With the electronic devices, doctors can exchange medical information efficiently, respond promptly to patients’ needs and provide more choices for patients to get the best possible care.
The practice of telemedicine also helps lower medical costs for patients and healthcare providers. On the patient side, unnecessary trips to the doctor’s workplace may be avoided with telemedicine services. For healthcare providers, the costs of unnecessary moves to other hospitals may also be avoided if there is a proper exchange of medical information through telemedicine platforms.
Aside from patients in remote areas, doctors and caregivers working there also benefit from telemedicine. With regular communication with other medical experts, their knowledge and information regarding medical cases will also improve and therefore translate into increased skills and improved services to patients.
8. What can patients in remote areas enjoy from telemedicine?
A. Free medicine. B. Timely medical advice.
C. Mental health examination. D. Risk-free medical treatment.
9. How does telemedicine help patients reduce costs?
A. By shortening treatment time. B. By offering volunteer caregivers.
C. By reducing their need to go to the hospital. D. By lowering the price of normal medical care.
10. What does the underlined word “platforms” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Service systems. B. High buildings. C. Waiting halls. D. Medical stores.
11. What benefit can medical workers in remote areas get from telemedicine?
A. They will get a pay rise.
B. They will feel less stressed.
C. They will develop their professional skills.
D. They will have a better relationship with patients.

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Patients in rural areas and other remote places, for example, may benefit from telemedicine by way of getting the medical services as if they were physically present in a hospital. Through video conferencing, patients may report their worries to their doctors even if they are in remote areas. (例如,农村地区和其他偏远地区的患者可以通过远程医疗获得医疗服务,就像他们实际在医院一样。通过视频会议,即使患者在偏远地区,也可以向医生报告他们的担忧)”可知,偏远地区的患者能从远程医疗中获得及时的医疗建议。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“The practice of telemedicine also helps lower medical costs for patients and healthcare providers. On the patient side, unnecessary trips to the doctor’s workplace may be avoided with telemedicine services. (远程医疗的实践还有助于降低患者和医疗保健提供者的医疗成本。在患者方面,通过远程医疗服务可以避免不必要的去医生办公室的行程)”可知,远程医疗通过减少患者去医院的次数来帮助患者降低成本。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“For healthcare providers, the costs of unnecessary moves to other hospitals may also be avoided if there is a proper exchange of medical information through telemedicine platforms.
根据最后一段“Aside from patients in remote areas, doctors and caregivers working there also benefit from telemedicine. With regular communication with other medical experts, their knowledge and information regarding medical cases will also improve and therefore translate into increased skills and improved services to patients. If you’ve been to a birthday party, you’ve probably seen it: the cake comes out, the candles are lit, the room sings, and the birthday person makes a wish before blowing them out. However, this moment didn’t start as just a party tradition.
The simple act of blowing out birthday candles carries a rich history dating back thousands of years to ancient Greece, where people honored Artemis, goddess of the moon, with round honey cakes called “noûton-gonosupahon”. Historians like Marie Nicola suggest candlelight likely represented moonlight during lunar celebrations. “Fire represented the presence (存在) of gods across Indo-European cultures,” notes Nicola. As Greek customs spread, the Romans later absorbed many of these practices, introducing round cakes and candlelit offerings into birthday celebrations as their empire expanded (扩张).
By the Middle Ages, Germans developed their own candle tradition through Kinderfest, a traditional festival celebrating children. People back then believed children were easily hurt by bad spirits on their birthdays. So the candles were left to burn throughout the day until the evening meal, and their smoke was believed to have protective power and carry the child’s wishes to heaven. German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s 1799 account of his 52nd birthday cake with 50 candles marks one of the earliest documented uses matching modern practice.
The 19th century saw the tradition develop quickly. Swiss records from 1881 described cakes with candles representing each year of life — the first clear documentation of today’s celebration. Germans then brought the custom to America, where it gained new meaning: blowing out all candles in one breath ensured wishes come true.
Mass production and media promoted the tradition worldwide. By the 1920s, numbered candle sets began to be sold, while Disney’s 1931 Mickey Mouse cartoon The Birthday Party strengthened the image in popular culture. After World War Ⅱ, American consumer culture exported the candle-blowing tradition globally, through tourism, kids’ media, and big brands, from Japan adopting it in the 1950s to Hallmark cards featuring candle imagery.
What began as spiritual protection became a universal celebration of life-proving, and even ancient celebrations can develop into joyful traditions. As Nicola reflects, “That single breath blowing out candles still carries shadows of ancient prayers, now transformed into wishes for the future.”
12. What may early Greek candlelight stand for?
A. The beauty of natural sunlight. B. The goddess’ existence.
C. The power to keep people healthy. D. Symbols of Roman expansion.
13. Why did Germans keep candles burning all day on kids’ birthdays?
A. To drive away evil spirits. B. To celebrate a good harvest.
C. To record the child’s growth. D. To decorate holiday desserts.
14. Which of the following helped spread the custom globally?
A. The detailed Swiss cake records. B. The growing popularity of cartoons.
C. Mass production and media influence. D. Mass publication of famous German books.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Various ancient Greek religious gods. B. Origin and development of cake candles.
C. Special practices to remember big days. D. Different birthday celebrations worldwide.

根据文章第五段首句“Mass production and media promoted the tradition worldwide. (大规模生产和媒体宣传使这一传统传遍了全世界。)”可知,是大规模生产和媒体的影响帮助这一习俗在全球传播。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Looking back, I realize that what once made me feel out of place was actually where I was rooted.
Mr. Tide introduced me to the class and mentioned that my family had just moved to Chicago from Jamaica. The class warmly welcomed me and sang songs. Then Mr. Tide took this opportunity to share some facts about Jamaica. Every topic brought back memories. I soon slipped off into (陷入) daydreams of sitting in class with my friends as the warm and gentle wind went in through the windows. In contrast, the windows were closed tight against the snow here.
Suddenly, Mr. Tide’s voice pulled me back and he asked me how schools in Jamaica were different from those here. I stood up, struggling to open my mouth. Part of me wanted to speak with Jamaican rhythm (节奏). But the other part wanted to change my pronunciation to sound like everyone else. In the end, I spoke carefully about the school uniform in Jamaica. I could have told them about the morning gathering, or the mango tree we climbed during breaks. But I chose a safer answer, which didn’t sound too foreign. To my surprise, no one laughed at my accent.
A boy asked if I played sports and I told him proudly I was captain of the school’s cricket (板球) team, waiting for the admiration that usually followed. Silence. Confused faces. No one knew my favorite game! I reached into my bag and pulled out my cricket bat and ball, hoping to explain — but the bell rang before I could.
At lunch, I sat alone, eating a cheeseburger — a poor dish to replace with the patty (肉饼) I loved back home. I tried to like it. But with each bite, I missed home more.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just then, Kevin, the boy who had asked about sports came over, holding a book about world sports.

When I got home, the smell of Jamaican cooking greeted me at the door.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
Just then, Kevin, the boy who had asked about sports came over, holding a book about world sports. He pointed to a photo and asked if it was the cricket. I nodded and pulled out my bat and ball. His eyes lit up with curiosity, hoping I could teach him. I hesitated, then agreed. After school, we met on the field. I showed him how to hold the flat bat, how to stand, how to swing. He missed the first few throws but kept trying. For the rest of the afternoon, it was just the two of us — passing the ball, laughing at his wild swings, and me forgetting to “correct” my vowels.
When I got home, the smell of Jamaican cooking greeted me at the door. I took a bite, and the familiar flavor flooded my mouth. For a moment, I was back in Jamaica, like an ordinary afternoon of playing cricket and enjoying a patty. I thought about Kevin, how eagerly he had swung my bat, how my real accent had slipped out unnoticed. Maybe I didn’t have to sound American to belong, because home wasn’t a place I left behind, it was something I carried with me, in my sport, taste and accent. My different culture could be a bridge, rather than a wall.

A. The detailed Swiss cake records. B. The growing popularity of cartoons.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
