For centuries, the inland areas of southwest China have met a hard transport problem: rich natural resources and goods were kept far away from sea coasts. They had to take longer and more expensive roads to reach world markets. On September 16, 2026, the great Pinglu Canal was officially open to ships. It changes the local economic situation and creates a direct waterway from rivers to the sea, connecting southwest China with the Beibu Gulf.
Located in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the 134.2-kilometre waterway is one of China’s most important large projects. Built with a total cost of 72.7 billion yuan, it can carry ships of 5,000 tons. By linking the Xijiang River transport network with Qinzhou Port on the coast, the canal makes the old shipping path through Guangzhou Port more than 560 kilometres shorter. People expect it to save about 5.2 billion yuan in transport costs every year. It will greatly help the trade of large amounts of goods such as minerals, coal and building materials.
Unlike water projects built only for money, the Pinglu Canal pays much attention to both construction and environmental protection during its building. To protect the living things along the coast, workers moved more than 9,570 grown mangrove trees and planted 275,000 young trees, and most of them grew well. Many new green ways were used in the project. These include special paths for fish and a 240-metre bridge for wild animals to cross. Together, these measures bring back the broken travel paths for water and land animals. Over 98 percent of the earth dug out during construction is reused for environmental repair and land improvement.
Besides these environmental benefits, the canal changes local trade. As a key part of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, it helps develop fast trade between China and ASEAN(东盟). It makes Chinese factory products reach Southeast Asian markets more quickly, and helps ASEAN farm and mineral resources enter southwest China more easily. Trade experts believe that more and more goods will be carried through the canal in the following years. In the best situation, it can carry about 150 million tons of goods each year.
Just like the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal, which changed world shipping rules, the Pinglu Canal has its own special value for this area. Different from those canals that connect different oceans, it serves river-and-sea transport inside one single area. Its full economic value will depend on better joint work with existing ports, railways and transport networks to support the growing foreign trade of southwest China.
1. What can we know about the Pinglu Canal from Paragraph 2?

On September 12, 2026, Dario Amodei, the head of AI company Anthropic, posted an article called “We Must Pace the Frontier” on X. “We must slow down the speed at which we improve the abilities of AI models. Progress will still look fast, and we must make good use of the time we get,” Amodei wrote. His suggestion does not ask people to stop AI research. Instead, it asks AI developers to slow the quick improvement of powerful AI abilities so safety tests can keep up with technological progress. This opinion quickly won support from important people in this industry. Sam Altman from OpenAI said, “I agree with Dario,” and Elon Musk replied, “Dario is right.”
Three days before Amodei’s article, Jacob Coxon, a safety researcher at Anthropic, left his job publicly. He warned that uncontrolled AI development would bring serious and hard-to-predict dangers. Back in July 2026, over 1,000 AI workers from different companies also signed an open letter. They asked the US government to support slower AI development with safety as the first thing.
In Amodei’s opinion, many powerful AI systems have shown surprising actions in tests. Without complete human watch, independent AI programs can get into outside online websites and carry out tasks outside their planned purposes. These test accidents have made many tech leaders think that safety work cannot keep up with fast technological breakthroughs. Amodei warned that strong competition may push research groups to chase quicker model improvements while ignoring hidden risks.
To deal with these dangers, Amodei offered a useful three-part plan. He advised putting outside examiners inside research labs to carry out regular safety checks, improving cooperation among democratic countries, and encouraging worldwide teamwork on risk control. OpenAI and Anthropic have publicly supported some parts of this plan. OpenAI promised to use independent examiners, and Anthropic allowed outside examiners to get information at the worker level.
However, this suggestion has caused a hot discussion. Some researchers think properly changing the speed can successfully stop possible dangers and help long-term healthy development. Others hold different ideas. They say too many limits may slow down useful technological progress in medicine, environmental protection and public services.
As AI technology keeps developing fast, the industry meets a continuing problem: finding the proper balance between innovation and safe, responsible development.
1.What is the main idea of Dario Amodei’s suggestion?
A. People should stop AI research for some time to do safety tests.
B. We should slow the improvement of powerful AI models.
C. AI labs must stop making more powerful models to compete.
D. Governments should ban AI systems with surprising actions.
2.Which of the following statements about Amodei’s three-part plan is right?
A. It asks examiners in labs to slow AI model improvements.
B. It calls for international teamwork to deal with AI risks.
C. It tries to stop AI programs from using online websites.
D. It is made mainly to end arguments among researchers.
3. What does Paragraph 3 talk about?

In a small gatehouse at a rural school in Henan Province, Zou Zhipeng cooks himself a bowl of plain noodles, with no oil or vegetables added. His T-shirt has faded from years of wear, and his shoes are coming apart. Living on less than 100 yuan a month, he has kept to this simple life for nearly twenty years. To him, it is enough.
Zou, 50, was born in Jiangyin, Jiangsu. Back in 2007, he was working at a local cultural center when he came across an online post about a serious shortage of teachers in rural Guizhou. He quit his job and headed west to teach, planning to stay for just one year.
When that year came to an end, his students gathered around him, singing. "Mr. Zou, can you stay until we graduate?" they asked. Unable to say no, he stayed — and that simple question changed his life.
Over the next two decades, Zou taught at more than ten rural schools across Guizhou, Hunan, Guangdong and Henan, where more than 2,000 students passed through his classrooms. He received no salary. During school vacations, he would return to Jiangsu, working as a tutor and doing odd jobs to get by. He wore the same clothes for years, and the 30-hour journey home always meant a hard-seat ticket. Even so, he gave away over 300,000 yuan of his own savings. The money helped low-income students stay in school, and it also paid to fix leaking roofs and replace old doors and windows.
His story soon spread online. Some internet users offered to donate money, but Zou asked them to stop. Any money he received, he explained, would go to the schools, with every detail made public. "Kindness carries weight, but trust carries more," he said.
His students have never forgotten him. This past Teachers' Day, a group of former students bought him an electric scooter and a television. One former student is now a teacher. "One person's effort is limited," Zou says. "I hope more people will care about rural education."
1. What can we know from the description of Zou's daily life in Paragraph 1?
A. He receives little financial support from local schools
B. His living expenses are kept extremely low during his volunteer work

D. He has got used to eating plain noodles for nearly every meal
2.Why did Zou Zhipeng choose to keep teaching in rural areas after the first year?
A. He could make much more money by doing part-time jobs there.
B. The local schools offered him a high salary to stay for longer time.
C. He could not refuse his students’ warm request to stay until their graduation.
D. He wanted to travel around different provinces while working.
3.What do you think of Zou Zhipeng?
A. He is quiet and careful but too strict with his students.
B. He is poor in money but rich in love and responsibility.
C. He is easy-going and enjoys receiving gifts from strangers.
D. He is selfless and sticks to his dream of rural education.

AI can quickly study different kinds of exam questions, find out the key knowledge points for tests and create standard ways to solve problems, providing all correct answers that students need in exams.
Convenient intelligent tools have made it much easier for people to learn knowledge. However, they also cause many students to form the habit of learning passively and lose the ability to think on their own.
The core of education has never been just getting right answers. Lots of students use AI to solve difficult math problems. After inputting the information of questions, they can get full solving steps and standard answers, with clean and tidy exam papers and nearly no mistakes.
But a middle school math teacher knows very well that these students only copy the final results. If the types of questions are changed a little or asked in different ways, they will not know what to do at all. In class, he purposely puts aside the standard answers. He leads students to understand the basic rules behind questions, find out their weak points in thinking step by step slowly, and encourages them to try difficult or complex but self-dependent ways to work out problems. He does not wish for perfect and identical exam paper results. Instead, he pays attention to developing students’ ability to think and judge independently on their own.
Problems in Chinese writing also show the big differences between AI and real teachers. Many students are used to letting AI make writing outlines and collect writing materials for them. Their essays have clear structures and beautiful sentences, but have no personal opinions or true feelings at all.
A high school Chinese teacher does not support writing high-score essays with fixed templates. On the contrary, she carefully reads every student’s imperfect essays with great patience.
She teaches students based on their different writing styles and keeps everyone’s special way of expressing ideas. She tells students to collect writing materials from small daily moments, show their true inner thoughts with honest words, and slowly break away from the fixed writing patterns.
Computer programs always look for neatness and sameness and wipe out personal differences. They only use the same best fixed templates to solve all problems and never care about students’ real situations or weak points.
The greatest advantage of teachers is that they can find every student’s weaknesses and special features, help students develop independent thinking abilities, encourage them to explore by themselves, and respect everyone’s unique understanding and expression.
Teachers can notice small changes in students’ moods, accept students’ imperfect performance and slow progress in study, and guide each student to grow at their own speed instead of using the same strict standard for everyone.
This warm and human-centered teaching protects students’ active thinking and their passion for exploring new things. This is the true meaning of education, which cold computer programs of AI can never copy.

The sweetness and tea smell of milk tea come fast. After one cup, the mood is gently lifted, and tiredness steps aside for a while. Sugar quickly raises blood sugar, and caffeine excites the central nervous system, so a short feeling of excitement arrives. As this happens again and again, the brain remembers the reward, and the wish grows: wanting a cup, drinking often, getting more used to it, and feeling nervous when stopping. Researchers call this state—hard to stop, hard to give up—milk tea addiction.
A study by Tsinghua University and the Central University of Finance and Economics, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders in 2023, surveyed 5,281 college students in Beijing. Nearly 77% of them had drunk at least 6 to 11 cups in the past year, 2.6% had 4 to 6 cups a week, and 1.2% had one cup a day. The researchers put frequency (频率), dependence, withdrawal (戒断反应), tolerance (耐受性) and guilt together into “addiction”. The higher the level, the higher the risk of depression and anxiety, with correlation values(关联值) of 0.31 and 0.28.
Another survey of college students in four provinces and cities gives a clearer number: those who drank 4 to 5 cups a week had 4.12 times the risk of serious mental problems as those who drank none; for six cups or more a week, it rose to 8.04 times. High sugar and caffeine are seen as the forces behind this: the former disturbs the hormone system that controls stress, and the latter, once too much, often goes with insomnia (失眠) and anxiety.
Women drink more.
In a sample from iiMedia Research, female buyers made up about 70%. When tired, working late or meeting friends, a sweet drink both calms the mood and serves as an excuse for social time, and its “emotional value” is often mentioned; the study also shows that women's level of milk tea addiction is generally higher than men's.
The hidden risk lies in the recipe.
A spot check(抽查) by the Shanghai Consumer Council found that one cup of milk tea has 270 mg of caffeine on average, up to 480 mg, about the same as four cups of American coffee; the sugar is even more surprising, with normal sweetness averaging 34 grams per cup, up to 62 grams, close to 14 sugar cubes, and products marked “sugar-free” still contain sugar in real tests. Milk foam, pearls (珍珠) and taro paste (芋泥) add another layer of fat and sugar. After drinking often for years, the risks of obesity (肥胖), diabetes (糖尿病), high blood lipids and bone loss all rise together.
1. Which of the following statements is right?
A. Drinking milk tea occasionally can directly cause serious mental diseases
B. Sugar-free milk tea totally contains no sugar in actual detection
C. Female groups are more likely to get addicted to milk tea than males
D. Most college students have severe milk tea addiction
2. What can we know from the two college student surveys?
A. Most Beijing college students never drink milk tea in a year
B. Higher milk tea drinking frequency means higher mental health risks
C. Drinking 5 cups of milk tea weekly is safer than drinking none
D. The addiction level has no relation with depression problems
3. Why is milk tea more popular among women ?
A. Because it provides emotional comfort and supports social needs
B. Because it contains less sugar and fat than other drinks
C. Because female students have more pocket money to buy it
D. Because its taste is much better than traditional coffee and tea
4. What can we know about milk tea’s ingredients?
A. Ordinary sweet milk tea contains less sugar than sugar-free ones
B. The accessories in milk tea increase health risks indirectly
C. Caffeine in milk tea is far less than that in American coffee
D. Milk tea’s sugar content will not cause physical illnesses
5. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To introduce the popular flavors and ingredients of milk tea
B. To show college students’ different drinking habits of milk tea
C. To compare milk tea with American coffee in caffeine content
D. To explain the formation and hidden harms of milk tea addiction

Close your eyes and think of the Mid-Autumn Festival. When you think of this festival, a bright, round moon may come to your mind. It is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. With the doors and windows open in the cool autumn, the Mid-Autumn Festival becomes one of the best times to enjoy the beautiful moon. This year, it will fall on September 25.
The moon has long been connected with people’s feelings. In Chinese culture, the round moon means "reunion". So countless Chinese poets have connected the moon with their families on the Mid-Autumn Festival. When they look at the moon, they often miss their families who are far away.
One of the most famous works comes from Su Shi, a great poet of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). On the Mid-Autumn night 900 years ago, he was far from his family. He expressed his deep longing for them by writing, "We have sorrow and joy; we part or meet again; The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane." (人有悲欢离合,月有阴晴圆缺). Even today, these words still show Chinese people’s wishes to stay with their families on the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Interestingly, although people all over the world share the same moon, different cultures have unique stories about it. In Māori culture, people compare the bright round moon to beautiful ladies. Ancient Romans called the moon "Luna", after their goddess of the moon. They believed the moon had the power to influence people’s moods. This gave rise to the word "lunatic", which means "crazy".
Today, the Mid-Autumn Festival is still very popular. On that night, families usually get together to have a big dinner. After dinner, they sit outside, eat mooncakes and enjoy the bright moon together. It is a warm and happy time for every Chinese family.
1. What does the round moon mean in Chinese culture?
2. What do Chinese families usually do to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival?
3. What feeling does Su Shi’s poem mainly express?
4. Why do people in different cultures create different moon stories even though they watch the same moon?
5. What is the main idea of the passage?

A
For centuries, the inland areas of southwest China have met a hard transport problem: rich natural resources and goods were kept far away from sea coasts.
A. It is built mainly to improve local ecological environment.
B. It helps cut the shipping distance by more than 560 kilometres.
C. Most of its total money is spent buying large ships.
D. It directly links local mines with Southeast Asian markets.
2. Why do workers build fish passages and the 240-metre wildlife overpass in this project?
A. To meet local wild animals’ travelling needs.
B. To cut down the cost of the whole project.
C. To reduce the project’s influence on animals’ moving routes.
D. To make the canal fit for 5,000-ton ships.
3.Which of the following statements is right?
A. Pinglu Canal mainly helps cut down the cost of building ports.
B. Builders reuse most dug-out soil for environmental repair.
C. Pinglu Canal can carry 150 million tons of goods every year now.
D. The canal is built mainly to protect mangrove trees along the coast.
4. Why does the writer talk about the Panama and Suez Canals?
A. To show Pinglu Canal’s special local value through comparison.
B. To prove they are more valuable than Pinglu Canal in economy.
C. To explain how world canals change global geography.
D. To say regional canals will take the place of ocean canals.
5. Which of the following statements will the writer agree with?
A. Pinglu Canal has fully used its economic value.
B. The canal’s cargo amount has reached 150 million tons already.
C. We should stop all water projects only for making money.
D. People take environmental steps when building the canal.

A. The practical three-part plan to control AI risks
B. Different people’s opinions on AI development speed
C. The public resignation of a safety researcher at Anthropic
D. The hidden risks of powerful AI systems and its cause
4. What can we know from the whole passage?
A. Most AI researchers believe we should stop AI development completely.
B. People have not reached an agreement on how fast AI should develop.
C. The balance between innovation and safety in AI has already been found.
D. AI risks will disappear once Amodei’s three-part plan is carried out.
5. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. To describe the history of AI development and famous AI companies in the US.
B. To explain the reasons why many AI workers gave up their jobs recently.
C. To show how independent AI programs carry out dangerous online tasks.
D. To introduce Amodei’s opinion of slowing powerful AI progress and different views on it.

4. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Zou took part-time jobs in his hometown to support his volunteer career
B. Zou accepted donations and used the money to improve his living conditions
C. Zou planned to work in rural Guizhou for more than one year at first
D. Some former students raised money to build new school buildings
5. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the difficulties facing rural schools in China
B. To describe how a teacher influenced his former students
C. To call on more people to donate money to rural teachers

1. What can we know about students who depend on AI to finish math homework?
A. They can master the basic rules of math well.
B. They may fail when facing changed question forms.
C. They will become more patient when solving problems.
D. They are good at finding their own thinking weaknesses.
2. Why does the Chinese teacher encourage students to collect materials?
A. To make their essay structures cleaner and neater.
B. To reduce the difficulty of creating writing outlines.
C. To help students write with true personal feelings.
D. To let students get used to fixed writing templates.
3. What can we know from the passage about AI programs?
A. They treat all problems with the same set of templates.
B. They try to respect different students’ special features.
C. They can notice students’ changes in moods quickly.
D. They accept slow progress and imperfect work.
4. Which of the following statements is right?

China made an amazing comeback to win the gold medal in the men’s 4×200m freestyle relay at the 2026 Asian Games on September 21, breaking the Asian record with a time of 7:00.17.
The Chinese team, including Xu Haibo, Fei Liwei, Pan Zhanle and Zhang Zhanshuo, won China’s first Asian Games gold medal in this relay event in 16 years. Japan won the silver medal with a new national record of 7:01.05, and South Korea got the third place.
Japan took the lead at the beginning. After the first two parts of the race, China fell behind by 3.47 seconds. While swimming after the leading players, the Chinese swimmers were influenced by the water waves, which made Fei Liwei fail to keep his stable speed.
Then Pan Zhanle started his part of the race. As the world record holder of the men’s 100m freestyle, he greatly reduced the time difference with a score of 1:44.24. After he finished his race and passed the baton to Zhang Zhanshuo, China was still behind, but the situation of the race had already changed.
The 19-year-old Zhang Zhanshuo closely followed his Japanese competitor in the last part of the race. At the final turning point, the two swimmers were almost neck and neck. In the last 50 meters, Zhang swam forward powerfully. He beat the last Japanese swimmer by 2.77 seconds, with a time of 1:42.92. All the audience in the stadium cheered loudly when China reached the finish line first.
After the competition, Zhang Zhanshuo kept humble. He said there was still a big difference between his performance and the world record. He will take part in seven events at this Asian Games, so saving energy is a big challenge for him. Even so, he said this gold medal was just a good beginning of his Asian Games journey.

1. It means "reunion".
2. They get together to have a big dinner, eat mooncakes and enjoy the bright moon together.
3. It mainly expresses his deep longing for his family and his understanding of life’s joys and sorrows.
4. Because different cultures have different ideas, beliefs and feelings about the moon.
5. The passage introduces the Mid-Autumn Festival, moon-related Chinese poems and moon stories from different cultures.
