This month's BEST BOOKS
LITERARY EDITOR Sarah Shaffi SHARES HER NEW FAVOURITE READS
Whatever Happened to Madeline Stone by Louise O'Neill (Bantam,f16.99,out 9th April).Teen acting
twins Madeline and Chelsea are at the height of their fame when one of them disappears.Chelsea steps away
from the spotlight-until twenty-five years later, when she realises Madeline could still be alive. This is
O'Neill at her best, mixing a thrilling plot with sharp commentary on fame, power, and men's bad behaviour.
The Ending Writes Itself by Evelyn Clarke (HQ,f16.99,out 7th April).A group of writers are invited to
crime author Arthur Fletch's Scottish island, only to find him dead. Each guest must write an ending to his
much-anticipated unfinished book-then they realise they are being killed off one by one.I love the multiple
perspectives, the island setting, and the way the tension builds so brilliantly.
The Drowning Place by Sarah Hilary (Harvill,f16.99,out 16th April).Detectives Joseph and Laurie are
very different. He is the only survivor of a school bus crash and has lived in Edenscar his whole life. She has
just arrived in the quiet Peak District town with her husband to care for his ill father. When a cruel crime takes
place, the two must work together and face horrible memories from the past.Vivid, moody, and unsettling-
could not put it down.
No Such Thing as Monday by Sian Hughes (The Indigo Press,f14.99,out 16th April).Steffie's father
spends his life terrorising his family. When he dies, she feels lost. The loss brings back memories of her
childhood and how badly her sister was treated. The cruel realism reminds me of Douglas Stuart's Shuggie
Bain.Despite being a short book,it packs in the emotional power and says so much about grief and guilt.

Throughout our Junior year,my classmates and I have been worried about what colleges will see when
they look at our whole life story reduced to a single 200-word essay. Will the golden word"success"form in
their minds when they review our achievements?Or will they see the big word"fail"in red?The shadow of
this mysterious institution steals away what success means to us.
My first step of redefining success began with course registrations. It is a well-known fact, especially in
my school, that Junior year is the time of packing many AP classes into the schedule. When asked why they
chose so many AP classes,my friends responded:"I don't know."They themselves don't know why they are
following the crowd and longing for the pressures of academic difficulty. Therefore, they do not feel the
satisfaction of being academically challenged.
Completing many courses no longer brings out the feeling of success because more than four AP classes
per year is a standard set by top universities.Determined-to follow my instincts (on what I felt success
means,I only chose two classes that I knew I would enjoy. The feeling of success was no longer attached to
what grade I received but to the pure joy of learning.
Even my failures are attached to a feeling of suceess;after I take a step back and look at the big picture,I
see them as a launching pad (for my next big achievement. In the ninth grade,I went in for my first
group interview for a leadership position as a shy girl. Not standing a chance against competitive applicants,I
came out of the interview with an upset look.Nevertheless, this interview wasn't a wasted opportunity.I
talked to one of the senior applicants who answered questions in a way that reflected the belief she had in
herself.
This year, with an open mind and new knowledge in mind,I walked into another group interview while
telling myself I was that cool senior.I managed to secure a leadership position.Ultimately, success came little
by little.
24.Throughout the Junior year, what was the author's major concern?
A.Pressure from choosing AP classes.
B.Performance in group fnterviews.
C.Competition with seniors.
D.Recognition by colleges.
25.The author chose fewer AP classes because of
A.her own understanding of success
B.her desire for academic challenges
C.her strong urge to follow the crowd
D.her dream of entering a top university
26.Which would best describe the author's first group interview?
A.Shameful
B/Rewarding
C.Engaging.
D.Relaxing.
27.What can we learn from this passage?
A.Everyone is the maker of their own success.
B.Success favours those with a golden heart.
C.Success knocks at your door only once.
D.A college holds the key to success.

Microplastics have become a common souree of pollution across the Earth-they have settled in the deep
sea and on the Himalayas, stuck inside volcanic rocks, filled the stomachs of seabirds and even fallen in fresh
Antarctic snow. They are even appearing inside humans,
Now,new research suggests that a simple, cheap measure may significantly reduce the level of
microplastics in water from your tap(水龙头):boiling and filtering(过滤)it.In a study published Wednesday
in Environmental Science Technology Letters, researchers from China found that boiling tap water for just
five minutes-then filtering it after,itcools-could rergove at least 80 percent of its microplastics.
fucially, this process relies on-the water contaming enough calcium carbonate (to trap the
plastics. In the study, boiling hard water containing 300 milligrams of calcium carbonate led.to an almost 90
percent drop in plasties. But in samples with less than 60 milligrams of calcium carbonate, boiling reduced the
level of plastics by just 25 percent.Additionally, the research didn't include all types of plastics. The team
focused only on three common types-polystyrene,polyethylene and polypropylene-and they didn't.study
other chemicals previously found in water such as vinyl chloride.
Still, the findings show a potential path forward for reducing microplastic exposurea task that's
becoming increasingly difficult.Even bottled water,scientists found earlier this year,contains 10 to 1,000
times more microplastics than originally thought.
Scientists are still trying to determine how harmful microplasties are-but what they'do know has raised
concerns. The new study suggests boiling tap water could be a tool to limit intake."The way they
demonstrated how microplastics were trapped through the boiling process was nice,"Caroline
Gauchotte-Lindsay,an environmental engineer of the University.of Glasgow in Scotland who was:not
involyed in the research, tells New Scientist."We should be looking into 'upgrading drinking water treatment
plants so they remove microplastics."
28.How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
A..By quoting an expert.
B.By detining a concept.
C.By giving examples.
D.By previding statistics
29.What determines the effectiveness of trapping microplastics in water?
A.The hardness.of water.
B.The length of cooling time.
C.The frequency of filtering.
D.The type of plastic in water.
30 What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning bottlea water in paragraph 4?
A.The importance of plastic recycling.
B.The.severity.of the microplastic problem.
C.The danger in overusing pure water.
D.The difficulty in treating polluted water.
31.What is Gauchotte-Lindsay's suggestion about?
A.Choice of new research methods.
B.Possible direction for.further study.
C.Need to involve more researchers.
D.Potential application of the findings.

As we age, even if we're healthy, the heart just isn't as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be.In
most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s.And among people who don't exercise, the
changes can start even sooner.
"Think of a rubber band.In the beginning,it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will
become dry and easily broken,"says Dr.Ben Levine,a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That's what
aappens to the heart.Fortunately for those in midlife;Levine is finding that even if you haven't been an
enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between.45 and 64 who did not exercise much but
were otherwise healthy.Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a
program of nonaerobic (exercise-balance training and weight training-three times a week. The
second group did highsintensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week.
After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.
"We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30-or 35-year-old hearts,"says Levine.
'And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump
(a lot more.blood during exercise."Buti the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise
didn't change,he says.
"The sweet spot in life to start exercising,if you haven't already,is in late middle age when the heart still
has flexibility,"Levine says."We put healthy.70-year-olds through a yearlong exercise training program,and
nothing happened to them at all."
Dr.Nieca Goldberg,a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says.Levine's findings are a
great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine

exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.
32.What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band?
A.The right way of exercising.B.The causes of a heart attack.
C.The difficulty of keeping fit.D.The aging process of the heart.
33.In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A.Diet plan.B.Professional background.
C.Exercise type.D.Previous physical condition.
34.What does Levine's research find?
A.Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise.
B.High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the yourig
C.It is never too late for people to start-taking exercise.
D.The more exercise we do,the stronger our hearts get.
35.What does Dr.Nieca Goldberg suggest?
A.Making use of the findings.B.Interviewing the study participants.
C.Conducting further research.D.Clarifying the purpose of the study.

Dr.Diego Ramonfaur,a 30-year-old medical resident in Ohio,'often faces changing work schedules.With
shifts that change frequently, maintaining a regular sleep pattern is impossible.86Basically,it is.
strategy of getting extra sleep before periods of sleep deprivation ()
Sleep banking, also known as sleep extension, means following a healthy sleep schedule to build
willpower before facing insufficient sleep.According to Dr.Rebecca Robbins,a sleep scientist at Harvara
Medical School, this practice is recommended for people with demanding jobs, such as doctors, soldiers,or
professionals facing busy periods.3
However,Dr.Yo-El Ju,a sleep physician at WashU Medicine, notes that sleep banking is somewhat
misleading."You can't really bank sleep, but you can pay off the debt,"she explains.38You reduce
your sleep debt in advance so you can stay awake longer later. She suggests going to bed 15 minutes earlier
each night, adding about 90 minutes of extra sleep per week before a demanding period.
39 Studies show it helps with simple tasks like pressing a light quickly, but not with complex
executive (functions such as driving safely while handling multiple tasks.Additionally, people with
insomnia should avoid this practice,as lying awake in bed can cause more frustration.
4
Experts emphasize that sleep banking is only a temporary solution.40For better sleep habits,
setting a bedtime alarm can help create a relaxing wind down routine. At the end of the day, healthy, consistent
sleep remains the ultimate goal for everyone.
A.It's like using a credit card.
B.To cope,he has turned to sleep banking
C.It doesn't seem to boost executive functioning.
D.It is a long term solution for sleep deprivation
