Fubao is a clever and playful cat. After a serious accident years ago, it couldn’t move its legs. Many vets (兽医) said it would never walk again. But Guo Mengxuan, a vet in Chengdu, didn’t give up. She decided to try something different— traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM)*. It’s an old way of treating animals in China.
For about three months, Fubao got acupuncture (针灸) three times a week. Slowly, the cat began standing and walking, just like other cats.
“Acupuncture helps the body’s energy move better,” Guo explained. “A growing number of pet owners are turning to TCVM when modern medicine can’t help.”
TCVM is similar to traditional Chinese medicine for humans. It has a history of over 2,000 years.
At Guo’s animal hospital, they treat about 70 pets a day, and sometimes as many as 100. About 10% of them get TCVM.” On my busiest day, I treated 17 animals with acupuncture,” Guo said. Usually, she first checks (检查) the pets by looking at their fur, breath and smell. She also asks the owners about their pets’ daily habits.
China has over 124 million pet cats and dogs today. As they live longer, TCVM can help them stay comfortable in old age. For Fubao and many animals like it, ancient wisdom (智慧) brings new hope.

There’s nothing better than an ice-cold drink on a hot day. But when you’re outside, keeping drinks cold is not easy. Wouldn’t it be great if your drink could chill (冷却) itself?
Well, the Cool Can (罐) can do that James Vyse from the UK used to serve drinks to customers. He created the self-cooling can although he was not a scientist. To create the can, Vyse spent years trying different ways. After more than 500 times, he finally succeeded.
The can starts to work when the user presses a button under it. The outside of the can gets cold right away, and after a few minutes, the drink inside is ice cold too. This works because of the salts inside the can’s walls. When the user presses the button, the water inside the can comes out and reacts (发生反应) with the salts, making the drink inside cold.
At the press of the button, the can makes a drink from room temperature to ice-cold in two minutes. After cooling, it stays chilled for up to 45 minutes. To let users know that their drink is cold enough, the snowflake symbol on the can turns from white to blue.
The can is fully recyclable (可回收利用的) and users can use it almost anywhere. Lots of people love this idea. A study of 100 students showed 81% would choose a self-cooling can when they do outdoor activities, and that 73% would be happy to pay more money for a cold drink.
Vyse is already talking to drink makers like Coca-Cola and Red Bull. If all goes well, his cans could be on sale by 2026.

Do plants talk to each other? New studies show that they do! Although plants don’t have mouths like humans, they have their own ways to have communication.
Some plants use chemicals (化学物质) to communicate with each other. This happens when insects eat a plant, for example, a bean plant. The plant sends out chemicals from the leaves. It is telling other bean plants, “I’m in danger!” When other bean plants smell the chemicals, they start to send out their own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals can drive the insects away, and others can attract (吸引) bees! Then the bees kill the insects.
More surprisingly, plants also use sounds to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make sounds with their roots (根). Corn and chili plants do this. They also listen to sounds from other plants. A chili plant can tell if a plant around is helpful or unfriendly. Some trees make sounds when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants can communicate through an amazing network (网络) called “wood wide web”. The “wood wide web” is connected to each other underground by fungi (真菌). These fungi connect the roots of different plants together. Through the “wood wide web”, plants can exchange information with each other. Some trees can even send food to smaller trees to help them grow.
Scientists are learning more every day about the ways plants talk to each other. Who knows? Maybe one day we will be able to “talk” with them.
