Text 1
M: Would you like a piece of cake or a coffee?
W: No, I’m on a diet. I’m only supposed to eat vegetables. I can’t even have fruit because it has too much sugar.
Text 2
M: So what do you think of Gina?
W: Well, she is a nurse, but she is a bit untidy. Before she moved in, she said she loved cleaning her old apartment.
Text 3
M: Hello, Sally. How about going for a meal this evening?
W: Good idea! I finish work at five. Why don’t we meet at a quarter to six?
M: OK, that sounds good. Let’s meet in front of the train station.
Text 4
M: I hope you can understand my reasons for deciding to leave, Mrs Harrison.
W: Do I have to remind you that we have put a lot of time and money in your career here?
Text 5
W: What are you going to do at the weekend?
M: I’m going to have music lessons, and I’m also going to see a film with my friends.
W: Sounds good.
Text 6
M: Hello, Sarah. Good to see you again. Welcome to the company.
W: Thank you. I know you asked me to come in a little later on my first day, but what time do I normally start work?
M: Well, the office opens at 8:30 and the team starts work at a 9 o’clock meeting.
W: What happens after the meeting?
M: We take a break at 10:30. My assistant Mia makes coffee for us all. Then it’s time to call customers and make sales.
W: That sounds good.
Text 7
M: Hey, Molly. What are you doing here?
W: Can’t you see that I’m running?
M: Of course. But I never saw you in the park at 6 o’clock in the morning. You never exercised, did you?
W: Well, I’ve decided to make a change.
M: Why?
W: I was reading books at home yesterday. When I got up to get something to drink, I had trouble breathing. Although the discomfort went away soon, I was scared, so I went to the doctor immediately.
M: Was there anything wrong?
W: He said I would die of heart disease if I kept the former lifestyle.
M: So what was the doctor’s advice?
W: Have a balanced diet and take more exercise. Thus, I have to say goodbye to my favourite fried chips and Coke, but what annoys me most is that I have to leave my warm bed at such an early time while others are still having dreams.
Text 8
W: So Mr Smith, why would you like to leave your current job?
M: Well, the sales position that you are offering would give me opportunities to work internationally. At the moment, I’m just based in Seattle.
W: I see. But what makes you suitable for this job?
M: I’ve been very successful so far in sales and I think I can offer a good service to your customers.
W: Interesting point. What is good customer service in your view?
M: The most important skill is the ability to listen to what customers have to say.
W: Very true. But of course learning is a never-ending process for anybody in business. Now, what are your weaknesses, would you say?
M: I suppose I’m not very good at making sure all the paperwork in sales is completed quickly. You know, I prefer to be out there, going on to the next customer. But of course, I know it has to be done. I’m trying to improve.
W: OK. Now, what are your salary requirements? For this sales position, I mean.
Text 9
M: This is a long flight. Marina, are you OK?
W: Gee, I’m sleepy. What time is it now?
M: According to my watch it’s 3:30 am. We’ve been flying for eight hours. I set it at the airport. Do we have to set our watches back when we cross the International Date Line or do we move them up? I can never remember which way it is.
W: I have no idea, too. I think I’ll take a nap.
M: Go ahead. Here is your blanket and your pillow.
W: My ears feel funny. I can’t hear properly.
M: Don’t worry. It’s because of the change in air pressure.
W: Do you feel all right?
M: I’m OK. If you open and shut your mouth repeatedly, it will help.
W: I will try chewing some gum.
M: Listen to the announcement. The plane is taxiing on the runway and making a perfect landing.
Text 10
M: I’ll talk about the marathons I ran these years. My first marathon was in Okinawa, Japan. On the morning of the race, I was pretty nervous. But the weather was beautiful, the atmosphere was fantastic, and my training beforehand was just enough—I finished the race! It was an amazing feeling! My favourite marathon was the one in Reykjavik, Iceland. Iceland is a beautiful country and the scenery along the course was breathtaking. The most difficult race was in Kuala Lumpur. First of all, it was really hot. But, my biggest mistake was that I forgot to pack my running shoes! Can you believe it? So, the day before the race, I had to buy new shoes and during the race, my feet were pretty painful! In St. Petersburg, which is in Russia, I managed to finish in third place! This was a real shock. After my last race in Bangkok, Thailand, I had completed my challenge. I still enjoy running. I’m currently preparing for a full marathon in Stockholm. And maybe I’ll try running 20 marathons in the new year!

第一节
A

根据第三段“We will get to know each other. I’ll define what surfing level you are at according to a pretest and we’ll hopefully fit two classes in once at our destination.”
根据“By attending the Christchurch surf camp you will come away with the skills and confidence to move gradually in the direction of your surfing goals. I hope you’ll feel a sense of possibility that you can learn some new skills.”以及“…video footage (片段) from all your surf classes…”和“…downloads of all the materials from the theory classes…” 故选A。
B
通读全文并根据最后一段“It was just then that I realized how deeply that old gravy boat connected me to the people and places of my past, tying me to my mother as well as her life, her joy and her love.”
根据第二段中“My mother carefully packed the china in the study upstairs because it’d been her mother’s and was valuable to her.”和第三段中“One night, the floor of the study fell through and the china was on the first floor under the rising river. The loss really broke her heart. That night she sat on the top of the stairs and cried.”
通读全文并根据倒数第二段“When we had to leave as the water poured in, I tried for the last time. Suddenly I felt something and raised my catch. The gravy boat! The moment I took it out in front of my mother, she was in tears of joy.” 故选A。
根据第二段中“My mother carefully packed the china in the study upstairs because it’d been her mother’s and was valuable to her. She told me, ‘You must treasure the things people you love have treasured. It keeps you in touch with them.’”以及最后一段“It was just then that I realized how deeply that old gravy boat connected me to the people and places of my past, tying me to my mother as well as her life, her joy and her love.”
根据第一段中的“However, the book’s repeated suggestion that digital technologies are reshaping our children’s brains and causing the epidemic (流行病) of mental illness is unsupported by science.”
根据第二段“When associations over time are found, they suggest not that social media use predicts or causes depression, but that young people who already have mental health problems use such platforms more often or in different ways from their healthy peers.”,第三段第一句“Several analysis and systematic reviews concentrate on the same message.”以及第二句“An analysis done in 72 countries shows no measurable associations between well-being and social media globally.”
根据第四段中的“The beginning and development of mental disorders are driven by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors.”以及第五段第一句“More young people are talking openly about their mental health struggles than ever before.”和第二句“But not enough services are available to address their needs.”
根据文章第一段中的“However, the book’s repeated suggestion that digital technologies are reshaping our children’s brains and causing the epidemic (流行病) of mental illness is unsupported by science. Worse, the rude proposal that social media is to blame might distract us from effectively responding to the real causes of the current mental health crisis in young people.”
根据第一段的句子“In a statement released Monday, OUP, which publishes the Oxford English Dictionary, defined ‘brain rot’ as the supposed decline in a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of over-consumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be shallow or unchallenging.”[在周一发布的一份声明中,出版《牛津英语词典》的牛津大学出版社将“脑腐”定义为一个人精神或智力状态的衰退,尤其被认为是在被认为肤浅或缺乏挑战性的材料(现在尤其是在线内容)上花费过多时间的结果。]
根据第二段的句子“According to OUP, it was first used by author Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden as he criticized society’s tendency to devalue complicated ideas in favour of simple ones.”(根据牛津大学出版社的说法,作家亨利·大卫·梭罗在他的著作《瓦尔登湖》中首次使用了这个词,他批评了社会倾向于贬低复杂的想法,而支持简单的想法。)
根据第三段的内容“Earlier this year, a behavioural healthcare provider in the United States began offering treatment for brain rot, describing it as a condition of confusion, tiredness, lack of focus, and weakened mental ability. The healthcare company cited endless scrolling and social media addiction as examples of brain rot behaviour, which could be prevented by setting limits on screen time or doing a digital cleansing.”(今年早些时候,美国一家行为医疗保健机构开始为脑腐提供治疗,将其描述为一种混乱、疲劳、注意力不集中和心智能力减弱的状态。 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“‘I also find it fascinating that the word “brain rot” has been adopted by Gen Z and Gen Alpha. These communities have promoted the expression through social media channels, the very place said to cause “brain rot”,’ he added. ‘It demonstrates a somewhat humorous self-awareness in the younger generations about the harmful impact of the social media that they’ve received.’”(“我还发现,‘脑腐’这个词被Z世代和Alpha世代所采用,这也很有趣。这些群体通过社交媒体渠道推广这种表达方式,而社交媒体渠道恰恰被认为会导致‘脑腐’,”他补充道。“这表明年轻一代对社交媒体对其产生的有害影响有一种有点幽默的自我意识。”)可知,卡斯珀·格拉斯沃将年轻一代描述为幽默的是因为他们以自我批判的幽默承认社交媒体的危害。故选D。
第二节

37.E 根据前句“The chest pass is a quick and accurate pass from the chest of the passer to the receiver.” 选项E(这是最有效的传球和最快的运球方式。)
38.F 根据后文“It is relatively easy to steal, but an effective way of starting a fast break. Place your hands on both sides of the ball and bring the ball behind your head. Use your upper body strength to make the pass and follow-through.” 选项F(过顶传球是双手举过头顶的传球。)
39.D 根据前句“The ball should bounce from that spot to arrive at your receiver above the knee and below the chest.” 选项D(换句话说,球应该到达接球者的腰部。)
40.B 根据前句“A baseball pass is best used for long distance passes.”

One possible version:
The sport I like most
As the saying goes, “Life lies in movement.” Among various sports, I have a strong preference for volleyball.
You cannot imagine how weak I was before junior high school when I would often catch a cold and easily become out of breath. Then I took up volleyball, from which I have gained plenty of benefits. Through daily training, not only does it help build up my strength and develop my character, but it also makes me aware of the importance of team spirit. Besides, by cooperating with my teammates, I make more friends.
All in all, volleyball gives me a body full of strength and a mind crazy about sports. Let’s enjoy the pleasure and benefits of sports together!

Not long ago when I had a dinner party, a guest noticed the gravy boat (船形肉汁盘)—a piece of china, and said, “Is it an heirloom (传家宝)?” The boat is very old, matches nothing else, and has a V-shaped cut on it. But it is the one I will keep forever.
Our history together began fifty years ago when I was seven. That December the river started to rise. We worked hard against the disaster and even kept a rowboat downstairs. My mother carefully packed the china in the study upstairs because it’d been her mother’s and was valuable to her. She told me, “You must treasure the things people you love have treasured. It keeps you in touch with them.” But then I didn’t really understand her concern.
The water rose higher. One night, the floor of the study fell through and the china was on the first floor under the rising river. The loss really broke her heart. That night she sat on the top of the stairs and cried.
The next morning I could tell how bad she still felt. Suddenly I saw the rowboat—yes, I could fish for the china. I put a hook (钩) onto a line, let it down until I felt it hit the bottom and slowly moved the rowboat back and forth, pulling my line, but time after time I pulled the line up empty.
When we had to leave as the water poured in, I tried for the last time. Suddenly I felt something and raised my catch. The gravy boat! The moment I took it out in front of my mother, she was in tears of joy.
It was just then that I realized how deeply that old gravy boat connected me to the people and places of my past, tying me to my mother as well as her life, her joy and her love.
( )24.What can we learn about the gravy boat?
A.It is fifty years old.
B.It means much to the author’s family.
C.It is old but perfect.
D.It matches the furniture well.
( )25.What made the author’s mother cry that night?
A.Pain of the injury. B.Rise of the river.

( )26.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Caring. B.Honest.
C.Confident. D.Responsible.
( )27.What does the author want to express in the text?
A.Stay calm in the face of a disaster.
B.The “heirloom” connects generations.
C.Suffering improves the parent-child tie.
D.Mother’s love promotes her child’s growth.

I have to say something after reading The Anxious Generation. It is going to sell well, because Jonathan Haidt is telling a scary story about children’s development many parents are led to believe. However, the book’s repeated suggestion that digital technologies are reshaping our children’s brains and causing the epidemic (流行病) of mental illness is unsupported by science. Worse, the rude proposal that social media is to blame might distract us from effectively responding to the real causes of the current mental health crisis in young people.
Researchers have searched for the effects suggested by Haidt. The efforts have produced a mix of no, small and mixed associations (联系). When associations over time are found, they suggest not that social media use predicts or causes depression, but that young people who already have mental health problems use such platforms more often or in different ways from their healthy peers.
Several analysis and systematic reviews concentrate on the same message. An analysis done in 72 countries shows no measurable associations between well-being and social media globally. Moreover, studies from some authorities find no evidence of intense changes associated with digital technology use.
As a psychologist studying children’s and adolescents’ mental health, I appreciate parents’ frustration and desire for simple answers. As a parent of adolescents, I would also like to identify a simple source for the pain this generation is reporting. There are, however, no simple answers. The beginning and development of mental disorders are driven by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors.
More young people are talking openly about their mental health struggles than ever before. But not enough services are available to address their needs. In the United States, there is, on average, one school psychologist for every 1,119 students. We have a generation in crisis and in desperate need of the best of what science- and evidence-based solutions can offer. Unfortunately, our time is being spent telling stories that are unsupported by research and that do little to support young people who need, and deserve, more.
( )28.According to the text, what is presented in The Anxious Generation?
A.Scary children’s stories.
B.Children’s brain disorders.
C.Game-changing digital technologies.
D.A wrong cause for young people’s mental illness.
( )29.What does the phrase “the same message” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Many countries do research on mental health.
B.Well-being and social media are closely related.
C.The young are faced with the mental health crisis.
D.Social media doesn’t necessarily cause mental illness.
( )30.Which of the following can be inferred from Paragraphs 4—5?
A.Mental struggles cannot be identified.
B.Mental health remains a private issue.
C.Psychological support is badly needed.
D.Research can’t support young people in crisis.
( )31.The text is intended to .
A.defend the use of social media
B.save a generation in mental crisis
C.recommend a potential best-seller
D.look into the issue of mental health

There’s a name for that feeling you get after spending too long scrolling aimlessly, and Oxford University Press (OUP) has chosen it as its word of the year for 2024. “Brain rot” took the title in a vote in which more than 37,000 people participated, as well as public commentary and analysis of OUP’s language data. In a statement released Monday, OUP, which publishes the Oxford English Dictionary, defined “brain rot” as the supposed decline in a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of over-consumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be shallow or unchallenging.
While the use of “brain rot” rose 230% this year, it was actually first introduced more than a century ago. According to OUP, it was first used by author Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden as he criticized society’s tendency to devalue complicated ideas in favour of simple ones. All these years later, it seems that brain rot is well and truly established. The term has gained attention over the past year, however, especially as worries grow about the impact of over-consuming low-quality content online.
Earlier this year, a behavioural healthcare provider in the United States began offering treatment for brain rot, describing it as a condition of confusion, tiredness, lack of focus, and weakened mental ability. The healthcare company cited endless scrolling and social media addiction as examples of brain rot behaviour, which could be prevented by setting limits on screen time or doing a digital cleansing.
“‘Brain rot’ speaks to one of the perceived dangers of virtual life, and how we are using our free time,” said Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages. “I also find it fascinating that the word ‘brain rot’ has been adopted by Gen Z and Gen Alpha. These communities have promoted the expression through social media channels, the very place said to cause ‘brain rot’,” he added. “It demonstrates a somewhat humorous self-awareness in the younger generations about the harmful impact of the social media that they’ve received.”
( )32.What does the term “brain rot” refer to according to Oxford University Press?
A.A headache caused by too much screen time.
B.Mental decline from meaningless viewing.
C.Low-quality online information.
D.Addiction to social media.
( )33.Why did Thoreau use the term “brain rot” in his writing?
A.To warn people about overusing the Internet.
B.To encourage readers to watch shallow content.
C.To challenge society’s preference for simple ideas.
D.To praise mental health advancements of his time.
( )34.What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.Brain rot is caused by social media and can be treated.
B.Social media causes most mental health issues.
C.Screen time has no impact on mental health.
D.Brain rot is not a real mental condition.
( )35.Why does Casper Grathwohl describe the younger generations as humorous?
A.Because they openly laugh at the mental state of older generations.
B.Because they treat low-quality online content purely as entertainment.
C.Because they completely avoid discussing brain rot and see it as a joke.
D.Because they admit the harm of social media with self-critical humour.

Anna’s miracle
Anna loved to dance, who had been dancing since she was three years old. She dreamed of becoming a professional ballet dancer. She practised every day with her teacher and her friends. Anna’s parents were proud of her, but they were also worried. They knew dancing was a demanding job for Anna, who had been born with a weak leg and had to wear a brace (支架) to support it. She had to work harder than other dancers, and she had to endure a lot of pain.
Anna’s parents wanted her to be happy, but they also wanted her to be realistic. They told her dancing was just a hobby. They said dancing was too risky, and that she should have other options. Anna understood her parents’ concerns, but she did not want to give up her dream. She believed she could make it if she worked hard enough. She did not want to let her weak leg stop her from pursuing her dream.
One day, Anna got a chance to prove herself. Her teacher told her that there was an audition (试演) for a prestigious ballet school in New York, and that Anna was invited to try out for it. Anna was excited, and she told her parents about it. She asked them if they could take her to New York for the audition.
Her parents were happy but also doubtful. They knew that the audition would be very competitive, and that Anna would have to dance against the best dancers in the country. They were afraid that Anna would not make it, and that she would be disappointed.
They tried to dissuade Anna from going, but Anna said this was her chance to show her talent, and that she could not miss it. Her parents saw how determined she was, and they decided to support her. They agreed to take her to New York for the audition.
The day of the audition came, and Anna was eager to dance. She stood on the stage in a confident mood. She looked at the judges and smiled confidently.
