Passage 1
(25-25高一·牛栏山一中·期中)Growing up in Damascus in Syria, Yusra dreamed of competing at the Olympics. She remembers watching the games with her father, who was a professional swimmer, and beginning training when she was 9. But after the civil war broke out when she was just 13, her life changed dramatically. “Our house was destroyed, so we had to live with my grandma,” she says. “We went to school, but it was dangerous; it was the same with swimming.”
After four years of living in fear of attacks, she and her older sister Sara made the difficult decision to flee in search of safety in Europe. They traveled to Turkey first. They then continued onto Germany, which became Yusra and Sara’s second home-although it took some time for it to feel like it. “The one thing that made me feel at home was swimming,” says Yusra.
She began training at a club, applying her determination and resilience (坚韧) to the sport she loved-and the next year, she was selected to compete at the Rio Olympics as part of the first ever Refugee (难民) Olympic Team.
Competing on the world stage alongside athletes from all other countries, she realized that she was representing others like her- those who were forced to live beyond borders. From that moment, she has worked tirelessly to share her story, and those of so many others, to bring greater visibility to the dangers they have faced.
Yusra will launch a foundation to provide refugees around the globe with access to education and sport. She is also currently studying film and TV production in Los Angeles. Swimming remains her cornerstone, the true constant in her life. “Swimming has taught me a lot: it taught me to try again. If you’re going through something tough, it doesn’t mean that it is over,” Yusra says.
1.Which word can best describe Yusra’s teenage life?

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·北京十一学校顺义学校·期中)Terry Fox never thought he’d live a remarkable life.
He liked sports, but no one thought he was talented. During his first year in the university, he had a pain in his right knee, which was so bad that he couldn’t stand up. He went to the doctor for tests. They showed that he had cancer. He was going to lose his leg and be given an artificial one. Terry’s family and friends all gave him fantastic support. Terry said that he knew all those people really cared and helped him. He decided to face it with bravery.
One night Terry was looking through an article about Dick Traum, who also had an artificial leg and had run in the New York Marathon. “If he can do it,” thought Terry, “I can, too. In fact, I’ll run across Canada and raise money for cancer research. It will be a Marathon of Hope”
For the next 16 months, Terry had special treatments for his cancer. And then he also began to run a little every day. Each day he ran a little farther. It is 5,300 miles across Canada. Terry hoped to run thirty to forty miles a day so that it would take him six months. Most of all, he hoped to raise $1 million for cancer research.
Because Terry had an artificial leg, running wasn’t easy or straightforward. He had to move by jumping on one foot twice and then take a long step with his real leg. Although it looked awkward, he still kept on running. His action made people join him as he ran: children, football stars, wheelchair athletes and even his brother, Darrell. As Terry ran, people waved and cheered. So much money was donated that the volunteers used large garbage bags so everyone could give.
Then, outside Thunder Bay, Ontario, Terry felt a sharp pain in his chest. The pain was from cancer; this time in his lungs. He had to abort the Marathon after 3,339 miles. He told the people before he left, “I won’t give up. I just hope people will continue to give money.” And they did. Just under $25 million was given.
Terry received numerous awards. At 22, he was the youngest Canadian to ever receive Canada’s highest award, the companion of the Order of Canada.

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·北京西城·期中)The Party of Their Lives
In Los Angeles’s infamous Skid Row, there are hundreds of children living on the streets or in shelters. It’s a place where dreams go to die. But one couple is determined to use their own experience with loss to foster a sense of hope.
In 2013, Mary Davis and her husband lost their first unborn kid. Refusing to let the heartbreak break them, they became volunteers in a Skid Row homeless shelter. They found that many of the kids there had never had a single birthday party before, so they decided to throw a birthday party for those homeless kids. They took over a room in the Union Rescue Mission and filled it with streamers, gifts and a cake. The kids were so excited that they made their own music — singing and clapping and, of course, laughing.
Since then, the couple have thrown a party each and every month. They routinely attract 250 kids and their parents. An hour before each party, volunteers arrive to set up the decorations and activities: face painting, balloon artists, a DJ, cake, and pizza. There are small presents for the kids celebrating their birthdays, but the Davis make sure there are more than enough to go around.
“I remember a mom came with her kid,” Mary says. “It was their first night at the shelter, and her child had a birthday. We had an extra gift for her — pink headphones. The little girl was so excited. And her mom… she was crying. ‘I never imagined we would ever need to be in a shelter. I didn’t know what to expect. But I really didn’t expect a birthday party for my child.’ she cried with happiness.”
Doing her best to normalize these kids’ lives is both heartwarming and bittersweet, Mary says. “If you look outside, you see homeless person after homeless person on the street, and it reminds you that these kids don’t get to leave this area after the party.”
It may be why, after throwing 88 parties, she still cries after each one. She credits the kids in the shelter with helping her hold on to hope. “We didn’t realize how much joy they were going to bring us,” she told CBS News. “And it was so healing for both kids and us.”

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·北京怀柔·期中)In 2009 in a small town, Todd Bol came up with an idea to share his mother’s love of reading with others. Bol’s mother had been a teacher who had loved reading. He decided to build a wooden box and fill it with books. Bol placed the box of books on a post in his front yard with a sign that read “Free Books”. Soon his neighbours noticed this tiny model of a “schoolhouse”. They began taking the books and replacing them with books of their own. The tiny library allowed people the opportunity to “check out” books day or night.
Bol’s friends and neighbours wanted little libraries of their own. Bol built several and gave them away. One of his friends, Rick, believed that Bol’s little libraries could benefit more than just local friends and neighbours. With these ideas in mind, Bol and Rick came up with a plan to build over 2,500 Little Free Libraries around the world. They believed that books should be available to all people, no matter where they live or what their background is. To help achieve their goal, Bol and Rick created a website that provides information about the Little Free Libraries and how people can establish little libraries of their own.
Thanks to Bol and Rick, the Little Free Libraries are encouraging people to read more. They didn’t just provide books. They also helped build friendships and a sense of belonging among community members. As more and more people visited Bol’s little library, they began talking with one another. They shared thoughts, ideas, and stories. They got to know one another. Everyone loved the little library. After all, as Bol says, “It’s a magic box with books. People tell us all the time that they’ve met more people in a week than they have in a lifetime.”
Today there are more than 25,000 Little Free Libraries around the world, and they can be found on almost every continent.

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·北京第十四中·期中)I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say, “I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said, “The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests. Occasionally, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Yet, now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax.
We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is a vital part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.
1.Why did the author want to grab the newspaper out of mom’s hands?
A. She wanted mom to read the news to her.
B. She couldn’t wait to tear the newspaper apart.
C. She was anxious to know what had happened.
D. She couldn’t help but stop mom from reading.
2.According to Paragraph 3, the author’s reading of road signs indicates ________.
A. her unique way to locate herself
B. her growing desire to know the world around her
C. her effort to remind mom to obey traffic rules
D. her eagerness to develop her reading ability
3.The author takes novel reading as a way to ________.
A. get away from a confusing world
B. develop a passion for learning
C. learn about the adult community
D. explore a fantasy land
4.What could be the best title for the passage?
A. The Magic of Reading
B. The Pleasure of Reading
C. Reading Makes a Full Man
D. Growing Up with Reading
Passage 2
(24-25高一上·北京第十四中学·期中)I will never forget the day when I won the bicycle race for the third time. It was special for me because I set a new record. But what made it more special was that I had to go through a tough time getting ready for the day.
About three months before the final race something unfortunate happened when I fell off during practice and broke my left leg. All I could do was to wait for the injuries to heal (治愈). The worry was that the doctors suggested bed rest for at least two months. A close friend of mine who had just recovered from his leg injury warned me that even if I were able to stand on my feet, I wouldn’t be able to ride a bicycle for a few more weeks. It was safe for me to give up because my leg was likely to be injured again during practice or the race.
It was very difficult for me to just stop like this. My father felt bad too. He tried to keep my spirits up during my bed rest. My parents gave me nutritious (有营养的) food to keep me strong. They showed me lots of videos of cycling events to improve (提升) my riding skills. Thus, they were preparing me for the day when I returned to the track. The most important thing they taught me was that while there could be a chance of missing the race, never giving up in such a situation was an example of good sportsmanship.
Two months passed quickly. The doctors were amazed at my complete recovery and supported my participation (参赛). Gradually, I was walking comfortably and exercising too. I practised as much as I could.
Finally, the big day came. I was a little bit nervous but once I was on the race track, the fear had gone. The race began. I tried my best and finally I won the race. The whole stadium (体育场) was clapping for me. This became my most special day.

4.What can be the best title for the text?
A. My most special day
B. My unfortunate experience
C. A long bed rest after an injury
D. An exciting bicycle race in my school

Passage 1
(高一上·北京第五十五中学·期中)Hansel Enmanuel, a 19-year-old basketball player, has drawn attention after videos spread quickly showing his awesome skills, like making 3-point shots and dunking (灌篮) with ease. All with just his right arm. It looks almost effortless when he plays. However, it’s not. It never has been.
Enmanuel was 6 when he was climbing a wall. It fell over him, bricks and blocks on his left arm. He was rushed to the hospital, but the doctor couldn’t save his arm and it was cut off several inches below the shoulder. It was a dark time for Enmanuel and his family.
Slowly, things got better for the little boy. He still remembers the first time he tied his shoes. Just 7, Enmanuel was waiting for his mother to do it for him, but she was busy cooking. “I was like, never mind, I’m going to start,” he said in a recent interview. “I told myself let me try. I was trying. Then I made it.” “So I was excited, excited like crazy,” he added.
Small things became huge victories. Months after that, Enmanuel tried basketball, too. But it’s not an easy path. His missing arm left him lacking balance. Every time he tried to run, he’d crash to the ground, falling on debris (碎片) covered across the courts he played on. These falls left him with numerous scars (疤痕). In the interview, Enmanuel pointed to the scar after scar down the length of the leg, reminders of a hard time that has brought him to excellence in basketball skills.
Enmanuel first dunked at 14, and it wasn’t long before his popularity grew with the views on his videos. But it wasn’t the highlight videos that interested his coach, Corey Gipson. He liked Enmanuel’s attitude and the way he carried himself on the court. “Hansel is a very tough person,” Gipson said. “When you see him on the floor, you just see an unstoppable force that doesn’t take anything for granted (理所应当).” “I’m not special,” Enmanuel said. “I’m not different than nobody. The only difference is that I’ve got one arm, but that’s not different.”

Passage 3
(25-26高一上·北京汇文中学·期中)I had a quick short stay in Detroit Airport before heading home. Knowing my gate number, I got there with 5 minutes to spare and stood waiting for “Gate 3” to be called.
I was already very tired and had an important call scheduled for an hour after I was set to get home. But then I heard the announcement, “It seems we have overbooked the flight. Would anyone care to volunteer to stay for the later departure in 4 hours?” And the gate attendant was anxiously waiting for someone to volunteer.
I looked around and saw businessmen needing to work, moms needing to meet their kids, kids needing to see their friends. Even though I wanted to be home just as much as anyone, something inside me said that I should extend some kindness to this group of strangers.
I picked up my bag, approached the desk, and told the gate attendant my decision. Smile spread on the face of her. As she was processing my ticket, I was happy to see all the other passengers could now board their flight and I had been able to help. The attendant handed me my boarding pass for the later flight and another piece of paper, then said, “This is for your kindness.” I saw that it was a 700-dollar voucher to fly anywhere in the world during the next year!
I got to my new gate and took a seat next to a power outlet so that my laptop would make it through the extra four hours. 1 rescheduled that important call. And then I got a lot of work done, which was a wonderful silver lining.
When my flight started boarding, I was surprised to discover that my new boarding pass was for a seat in first class. (25-26高一上·北京工业大学附属中学·期中)Rudolph plays football for Florida State University. When he was visiting a middle school in Florida one Tuesday, he noticed sixth-grader Leo eating his lunch alone. Rudolph grabbed a couple pieces of pizza and joined Leo at his table.
Leo has autism, a condition that can make it hard to make friends and communicate with other people. His mother always worries about him. Two days later, she saw a picture of Rudolph and Leo eating together and it made her so happy that she cried. Then, she shared the picture on the Internet, along with a message about how thankful she was. The story became popular very quickly.
“We just had a great conversation. He started off telling me his name is Leo, telling me how much he loves Florida State. We went from there, ” said Rudolph. “It was really easy. He had a nice smile on his face. Just a really warm person.”
Leo’s mother said that middle school can be hard, and she worries about how other kids will treat her son. “Sometimes I’m thankful for his autism. That may sound like a terrible thing to say, but in some ways I think — I hope — it shields him, ” she said.
“He doesn’t seem to notice when people look at him when he flaps (拍打) his hands,” she said. “He doesn’t seem to notice that he doesn’t get invited to birthday parties. And he doesn’t seem to mind if he eats lunch alone.”
The mother said the photo of Rudolph and Leo’s lunch date helped teach people about autism. “The picture speaks more than a thousand words. You can see how far away the rest of the students are, but you can see how engaged Rudolph is with Leo,” she added.
“I just wanted to go say hi to the kid, because I saw him eating alone. I didn’t even know anybody took a photo of it.” Rudolph said he was glad that the story was helping others.

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·北京大兴·期中)About 15 years ago, Andrew McLindon, a business owner, was riding his bike in Austin, Texas, when he thought about a friend’s 12-year-old son. The boy had never known the joy of biking because he suffered from a brain condition that often caused balance disturbances.
When he got home, he went online and found a three-wheeled bike with a seat belt, perfect for a child with balance issues. Soon the boy was cycling around the street with his peers, having fun and getting exercise. But there was more, as McLindon learned from his friend’s reaction after performing this small act of kindness. “To see his son interacting with other kids,” McLindon said, “I’ll never forget the smile on his face.” This smile touched Andrew’s heart and he wanted to help more children receive free special-needs bikes. And this led to the launch of the McLindon Family Foundation.
Funded by donations, the group worked with local children’s hospitals to find children who can benefit from owning bikes and to help craft each bike to the particular needs of the child. A bike may include a headrest, a shoulder band, a seat belt, and a caregiver’s steering and braking system in the back. The bikes are expensive — 4,000, and that’s with the foundation’s large discount. For kids lucky enough to get one, they’re a life changer. When the foundation was just started, people thought a bike was not a necessity for children with medical conditions. However, the response changed afterwards, many thought biking not only strengthened muscles but also built confidence, most importantly, it made kids feel inclusive.
“We worked with a 14-year-old who had a back problem,” said McLindon. She spent most days on the couch watching TV. Soon after she got her bike, she was training for special-needs bike-racing competitions. In a magazine interview, she said, “I always knew there was an athlete in me.”
So far, the foundation has given away 450 bikes, and that’s just a start. “I do a lot of things. I run a lot of companies,” McLindon says. “But getting these kids their bikes is the most important thing that I do.”
1.What benefit can special-needs bikes bring?
A. They can offer medical treatment.
B. They can provide exercise and fun.

Amy and June came across each other while traveling with their fathers. Midway, Amy gave June a bright blue clay vase. It was a small gesture, but a simple friendship between two 4-year-olds began.
Years flew by. The girls grew up together, becoming the closest friends. However, people change as they grow up. As Amy’s interests grew, she started to ignore June. Though hurt, June was still there when Amy needed support. But Amy brushed off June’s problems with “Later”.

The blue vase fell from the shelf by the door and crashed into pieces. A ten-year friendship was broken.

At the doorstep stood Amy, holding a small package. “I’m so sorry for how I’ve treated you.” She said, handing the package to June. June opened the gift. Inside was the blue clay vase, gently put back together with care. A letter from Amy read: “I’ve fixed the vase, just like I hope to fix our friendship. (25-26高一上·北京北京理工大学附属中学~·期中)Growing up in rural Malawi, Africa, William Kamkwamba learned to accept that life was hard. He lived with his parents and seven sisters in a small clay house without electricity or running water. Like most boys in his village, William was expected to assist his parents on the family farm, as well as keep up with his school work. Each night, like most Malawians, his family went to bed early because the kerosene oil they needed to light the lamps was costly.
When he was 10, a terrible drought left many Malawians hungry and William’s family was no exception. At the age of 13, William and many other children were forced to drop out of school when their parents could no longer afford his schooling. William had to work even harder to help his family, but he wasn’t ready to give up his education. He went to the local library and took out some books to study. One book, called Using Energy, sparked William’s interest in science and gave him an idea that significantly changed his future.
In the book, William found a picture of a windmill, and a brief description of how it could be used to generate electricity from wind. He knew that there was plenty of wind in his village, and realized that if he could build a windmill like that, he could give his family and the people in his village a much better life. There was just one problem. The book didn’t explain how to build a windmill, and neither did any of the other books in the library.
What happened over the next year demonstrated William’s incredible ambition and determination. He began to collect any kinds of materials he thought could be useful—scraps of wood, broken bicycles, old shoes—and started to build a windmill next to his family’s house. He endured many challenges and failures. Other people in his village called him crazy and said his idea would never work. Finally, at the age of 14, William completed his first windmill. When they saw electric lights and heard the sound of music on the radio coming from William’s house, the village people came running. He had done it. William Kamkwamba had found a way to capture the wind.
Kamkwamba’s autobiography, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, tells the story of how the rest of the world came to know about his achievements. With the help of international supporters, his village now has clean running water, solar powered lighting, and electric power. As a result of his actions, Kamkwamba was invited to study engineering at Dartmouth College, one of the top-ranking universities in the U. S. On Sept.17, 2022, Jeff and his son, Johnny, set out to begin the first of three legs of the Ironman competition, where competitors must complete a 140 miles of swimming, bicycling and running in under 17 hours. Not that long ago, Johnny could barely walk a few steps because he was born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). But his dream of being a runner never stopped.
From the day Johnny was born, Jeff refused to let his son’s disability hold him back. Determined to show Johnny that he could pursue his dream of being an athlete, Jeff helped him engage in running. They began waking up at 4 a.m. so Jeff could run while pushing his son in a special wheelchair called a racing chair. Every morning, they drove themselves to run increasingly longer distances. Soon, they were entering 5K races, then on to Ironman competition. Jeff would act as Johnny’s arms and legs, carrying the weight of his son throughout the race.
The race began with a 2.4-mile swim. Settling Johnny into a kayak, Jeff eased himself into the water. Swimming while dragging another person was very tough. But worst of all, Jeff had to struggle with jellyfish. “I occupied my mind by counting the number of times I got stung (蜇),” he says.

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·北京大学附属中学·期中)The universal freshman fear materialized: I walked into the wrong class on my first day in my senior high school. I faked confidence until attendance was called, feeling the confusion one feels when trying to complete a jigsaw (拼图) puzzle. The front office adviser delivered worse news: a system error had messed up my entire schedule and my intended class was full. Stuck by the limited choices, I stood silent until the adviser decided for me. “How about Video Production?” she said. Without any prior knowledge or preparedness and simply in desperation to feel settled, I agreed, reasoning that fancying movies might translate to fancying making them.
Before high school, I had no standout hobbies. I had tried many, but each was a puzzle piece that wouldn’t fit, leaving me with little identity and intensifying my fears. This random placement, however, was a turning point. Learning the ins and outs of filmmaking that first semester, a passion began to grow unnoticed. I realized it one day when I felt genuine excitement heading to class. It became the subject I devoted the most homework time to, a true indicator of my interest. Milestones like joining the student news broadcast team, which delivered episodes every Friday, fueled my love for the craft.
This passion provided the sense of belonging I had longed for. I dedicated three years to video production, taking all subsequent courses. Through writing scripts, editing videos, and collaborating with a crew, it became a fiber of my identity. It boosted my confidence, helped me find friends, and fundamentally changed my posture from a timid freshman to an assured senior. Finding a passion does wonders for self-esteem.
This serendipitous (有意外收获的) pairing of mec and video production prepared me for my life ahead. I now see life not as a puzzle to complete, but as a kaleidoscope (万花筒); my interests will continually shift and evolve: Embracing this, I am seeking new adventures at Arizona State University. I’ve applied to the State Press. I am sure that both my filmmaking fundamentals and my newfound confidence will help me contribute. I welcome this next chapter, knowing each experience adds a unique piece to the evolving picture of my life.

A. He formed his primary social circle there.
B. He was naturally gifted in technical subjects.

Passage 3
(25-26高一上·北京第三十五中学·期中)Following your passion (热爱) in life might not always be the popular choice but it is the best choice. This is a belief that David Marnah has instilled (逐渐灌输) in his three sons: Jesse, Francis, and Lord. Living in Ghana, most young boys their ages choose to play football if interested in sports. For these three teens, however, swimming is the best.
David, a football coach, often gets asked why he didn’t encourage his boys to follow his sport of choice. But for this loving father, this choice was an easy one to make — and it all originates from a sincere wish for his children to be themselves.
Having full support from their parents, these 14, 13-, and 11-year-old boys have become quite impressive swimmers. The three of them train as part of the swimming club called GH Dolphins.
While they each love the sport itself, they also have their own reasons for being as passionate as they are about it. Jesse, the oldest, is driven by the idea of making swimming a more popular choice for others in Ghana. Francis, the middle child, dreams of one day traveling to compete with athletes in other countries. For the youngest child, Lord, his love comes from watching his brothers fall in love with the sport.
“I train with the boys every time, and you should see how determined they are,” Bernard Morrison, their swim coach, said, “The boys are talented and have unique individual strengths. They have it in them to succeed, and I am excited to be part of their beginning.”
David is more than happy to cheer them on every step of the way. In fact, he doesn’t hesitate (犹豫) to change his plans in order to make sure he never misses any of their national competitions or training classes. (25-26高一上·北京第八十中学-11月·期中)Evangeline Iarossi is a softball (垒球) player from Tampa, Florida. She played with a softball league, but her community faced several problems. One of them was a lack of available fields for practices and games.
Her local league had some baseball fields, but only one softball field was available. That meant many of her practices were canceled. When the baseball teams needed room, they’d often take over the softball field, making it even harder to practice and play. Iarossi’s team would end up on a T-ball field. “A lot of girls don’t get practice, and they are dropping out,” she said. “When they couldn’t practice because they couldn’t get on the fields, they didn’t improve and finally quit because it was not fun for them anymore.”
Instead of letting others deal with the problem, Iarossi decided to send a handwritten note to the city’s leader, who was a basketball star at the University of Tampa. Her goal was to get support for the cause, but it did much more. Her note inspired the city’s government to provide the funding from an entertainment company to build more fields that are accessible to everyone.

(25-26高一上·北京第九中学·期中)Four years ago, Rome Leykin was on his way to work when he accidentally fell onto the tracks of Brooklyn's train as a subway was approaching. The incident resulted in the loss of both of his legs.
But surprisingly, with the loss of his legs, Leykin gained a new passion for racing. Before his accident, he wasn't really that athletic. He would just occasionally play basketball. And he plans to keep pursuing his athlete goals. He wants to complete the Abbott Six-the world's six largest marathons. One day, he said, he'll maybe even make the Paralympics.
For those who might be following his journey, he hopes they will take some lessons from his story. “There will be ups and downs but the trend is what's important. (24-25高一上·北京第一零一中学·期中)An Art Class
When Kelly was twelve, she started taking classes at Miss Grace’s School for Art. She didn’t like it at first: the “novice artists” — the kids who hadn’t really done art before-worked mostly with clay, and Kelly was a terrible sculptor.
It wasn’t until her third year that Kelly found something she was really good at-charcoal drawing (素描). She loved watching the lines spread unevenly across the page as she moved the bits of charcoal back and forth over the paper.
One day, Sophia, the best artist in her class, sat down and set up her easel (画架) next to Kelly. Kelly felt a sinking feeling in her stomach. She’d actually found an art form that she enjoyed and was good at-and now Sophia was going to outshine her again? Kelly fought back tears when Miss Grace entered the room.
“Hello class, Miss Grace said.” We’ll continue to work on the project today. What masterpiece would Sophia have come up with?
Kelly looked at Sophia’s easel and she couldn’t believe it-it was a mess! For a brief moment, Kelly couldn’t actually believe her drawing was better than Sophia’s.
But then she looked at Sophia, who was watching Kelly with an anxious expression. “I…. I couldn’t decide what to do,” Sophia said. “And you’re so good. Sometimes I feel like my stuff is just so bad in comparison.”
Kelly looked to see if Sophia was joking, but she seemed completely serious. Now Kelly was shocked. “I’m not talented ... Miss Grace seldom praises me. You’re the best one in our class!”
Sophia raised her eyebrows. “I might be a really good copier of the stuff, but I have no idea what to do when it comes to making up my own images. You are so great at making new things out of the old stuff. I’ve loved your works.”
“I’ve loved yours, too,” Kelly said.
“Well, definitely not this one,” Sophia said.
Kelly smiled. “Maybe not right now. But if you move these lines up...” she said, pointing her finger on Sophia’s paper.
Sophia was quiet for a moment. “That’s a great idea!” she said finally.
Kelly smiled and turned back to her drawing, looking every so often at Sophia’s work to see that she was taking her advice, down to the last line.

(25-26高一上·北京丰台·期中)At 17 years old, most are still learning basic driving skills in America. Once the car is parked, the day is packed with school activities and hanging out with friends. But at 17, Maggie Taraska had a distinctive goal in mind: Fly alone across the United States.
Both of Maggie’s parents were retired from the air force, so the urge to fly is in Maggie’s blood. She went to flight school, put in the hours with an instructor and started on her training hours. But on her first takeoff, something didn’t sound right. The plane had lost one of the landing gear wheels. “As soon as I took off, I just heard something was wrong instinctively,” said Maggie.
Her instructor talked to her from the ground while she circled a few times to gather herself. “I was frightened, thinking about all the bad things that could have happened; I was thinking about how my parents were on the ground as I knew they were watching.”
Stress and panic can cause any of us to make careless decisions. It takes mental practice to calm down. “Take a few breaths, focus on the moment and follow the plan. I panicked a bit, but followed my training.”
Maggie was a little shaky as she talked to the tower, but she had a perfect belly landing that skidded on the infield grass. Her father couldn’t be prouder. “By the time I saw Maggie on her approach, it was a better approach than I could have flown,” he said. Cheers erupted in the tower, and Maggie took a deep breath and climbed out of the plane.
Credit does go to the crew for talking to her. Yes, we all need someone to talk us through challenging times, but in the end, it was all Magic at the controls. We could all be forgiven for calling it quits after an experience like that. After all, it was a bit distressing. So walking away would be understandable. But five days later, Maggie was going through her pre-flight safety inspections, checking the wings, especially checking the landing gear.
“It feels amazing,” she said, “It gives an incredible sense of liberation.” At some point in our lives, we will all be in a situation for the first time. It’s scary. But if you face your fears, the whole world opens up to you.

1.How did the couple help the kids?
A. They raised much money.
B. They rented many houses.

(3)题解析:
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But it wasn’t the highlight videos that interested his coach, Corey Gipson. He liked Enmanuel’s attitude and the way he carried himself on the court. “Hansel is a very tough person,” Gipson said. “When you see him on the floor, you just see an unstoppable force that doesn’t take anything for granted (理所应当).”(但令他的教练科里·吉普森感兴趣的并不是精彩视频。他喜欢恩曼纽尔的态度和他在球场上的表现。“汉塞尔是一个非常坚强的人,”吉普森说。“当你看到他在场上时,你就会看到一种不可阻挡的力量,不会认为任何事情都是理所当然的。”)”可知,教练喜欢Enmanuel的态度和在球场上的表现,即他很坚强,有一种不可阻挡的力量来战胜困难。由此推知,令教练对Enmanuel感兴趣的是他应对困难的反应。故选A。
(4)题解析:

All with just his right arm. It looks almost effortless when he plays. However, it’s not. It never has been.(9岁的篮球运动员汉塞尔·恩曼纽尔(Hansel Enmanuel)在视频迅速传播后引起了人们的关注,他展示了他出色的三分球投篮和轻松灌篮的技术。全部只用他的右臂。当他演奏时,看起来几乎毫不费力。然而,事实并非如此。而且从来不是这么轻松)”和倒数第二段中“But it’s not an easy path. His missing arm left him lacking balance. Every time he tried to run, he’d crash to the ground, falling on debris (碎片) covered across the courts he played on. These falls left him with numerous scars (疤痕). In the interview, Enmanuel pointed to the scar after scar down the length of the leg, reminders of a hard time that has brought him to excellence in basketball skills.(但这并不是一条容易的路。
Passage 2
(25-26高一上·北京第一零一中学·期中)Slowly, things got better for the little boy. He still remembers the first time he tied his shoes. Just 7, Emmanuel was waiting for his mother to do it for him, but she was busy cooking. “I was like, never mind, I’m going to start,” he said in a recent interview. “I told myself: let me try. I was trying. Then I made it.” “So I was excited, excited like crazy,” he added.
Small things became huge victories. Months after that, Emmanuel tried basketball, too. But it’s not an easy path. His missing arm left him lacking balance. Every time he tried to run, he’d crash to the ground, falling on debris (碎片) covered across the courts he played on. These falls left him with numerous scars (疤痕). In the interview, Emmanuel pointed to the scar after scar down the length of the leg, reminders of a hard time that had brought him to excellence in basketball skills.
Emmanuel first dunked at 14, and it wasn’t long before his popularity grew with the views on his videos. But it wasn’t the highlight videos that interested his coach, Corey Gipson. He liked Emmanuel’s attitude and the way he carried himself on the court. “Hansel is a very tough person,” Gipson said. “When you see him on the floor, you just see an unstoppable force that doesn’t take anything for granted.” “I’m not special,” Emmanuel said. “I’m not different from anyone.

C. They can relieve physical suffering.
D. They can improve academic performance.
2.What inspired Andrew McLindon to start the Foundation?
A. His enthusiasm for cycling.
B. His ambition to start a new business.
C. The goal to invent a new type of bike.
D. The response from his friend.
3.What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Children can get special bikes for free.
B. Bikes were donated by the government.
C. Biking can bring confidence and connection with others.
D. People thought highly of the foundation at the beginning.
4.What can we learn from the story?
A. Giving is receiving.
B. Well begun is half done.
C. Practice makes perfect.
D. Hard work leads to success.
【答案】1. B 2. D 3. C 4. A

S. He also travels the world and gives talks about how he made his dream a reality.

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·北京第十七中·期中)Two-Man Ironman
After the two men completed the tough bike section in roughly nine hours, they set their sights on the final leg of the race — a 26.2-mile marathon.

Passage 1
“I said it’s not the 1800s anymore,” Iarossi commented. “Girls would like to play sports too.” It even led to an appearance on a well-known show to discuss her efforts. “I hope that all girls get to play softball, and that it’s just fair for all in sports.”

But that all changed after he was introduced to hand cycling. “When I saw it, I was like, ‘Oh, this is great. You don't even need legs to use it. This is perfect.’” he said. “So, I got on it, I rode and fell in love with it right away.”
Within a few months, he completed the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, a 40-mile ride through New York City. After that, he did his first marathon in 2021. He fished that race in 2 hours and 11 minutes, placing 12th out of 38.
“I'm going to attend this year's marathon and take on challenges. My hands are on the wheel, my eyes are focused, and I think my time is going to speak for itself.” he said.

A. She landed the plane immediately.
B. She thought of her parents’ expectation.
C. She circled a few times to calm herself down.

3.Which words would best describe Maggie’s personality?
A. Proud and intelligent.
B. Positive and cautious.
C. Patient and responsible.
D. Fearless and determined.

A. Failure is the mother of success.
B. A good beginning is half done.

D. Practice makes perfect.
