Jianbing is one of China's most popular street breakfasts. Every neighborhood has its own Jianbing vendor(摊贩) 1 (serve) breakfast from dawn through mid-morning, satisfying hungry 2 (local) on their way to work.
Contrary to 3 you might think, Jianbing is no grab-and-go street breakfast. To preserve the crispness(酥脆) of the pancake, the vendors never cook Jianbing in advance, so waiting in a line is part of the culture. But 4 (basic), Jianbing is a breakfast worth waiting for.
Jianbing has a longer history than almost any other Chinese street food. It is thought to have originated in Shandong Province during the Three Kingdoms Period, 5 military strategist Zhuge Liang had his soldiers cook food on shields(盾) 6 (hold) over the fire.
Of course, if Jianbing were that easy to make, it would have taken the world by storm long before now. Part of 7 challenge of copying the dish is that the recipe for a Jianbing differs from region to region, and even from vendor to vendor.
Many consider it 8 (possible) to make your own Jianbing without months of practice and tuition from a master. Yet a few committed foreigners have made it, who 9 (inspire) to bring Jianbing to an overseas audience hungry for it after their first taste in China back in the 1980s. With low or no-carbohydrate diets rising in popularity in recent times, the potato is now regularly overlooked in favour of other vegetables. In fact, research literature has previously indicated potatoes may have a detrimental effect on health, such as increasing the possibility of developing Type 2 diabetes(糖尿病).
However, new research done by Edith Cowan University (ECU) has shown that while potatoes may not have all the same benefits as some other vegetables, such as lowering the risk of Type 2 diabetes, health issues associated with potatoes may actually be due to how people are preparing them and what they're eating them with.
A recent analysis of this study led by Dr Nicola Bondonno from ECU's Nutrition & Health Innovation Research Institute found people who consumed the most vegetables were 21 percent less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who consumed the least quantity of vegetables. PhD candidate Pratik Pokharel carried out work on the analysis and said that while potatoes didn't have the same impact on Type 2 diabetes, they also didn't have any negative effect.
“In Denmark, people consume potatoes prepared in many different ways. In our study, we could distinguish between the different preparation methods. When we separated boiled potatoes from mashed potatoes(土豆泥), fries or crisps, boiled potatoes were no longer associated with a higher risk of diabetes: They had a zero effect,” said Pokharel.
“In our study, people who ate the most potatoes also consumed more butter, red meat and soft drinks—foods known to increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes,” said Pokharel. “We should separate potatoes from other vegetables in regard to messaging about disease prevention but replacing refined grains such as white rice and pasta(意大利面食) with potatoes can improve your diet quality because of fibre and other nutrients found in potatoes.”
1.What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Magical. B.Protective. C.Fantastic. D.Negative.
2.What might contribute to the bad reputation of potatoes according to ECU's research?
A.The effects they have caused.
B.The ways they are consumed.
C.The places where they are planted.
D.The results previous studies have shown.
3.Which of the following have little effect on Type 2 diabetes?
A.Fries. B.Crisps. C.Boiled potatoes. D.Mashed potatoes.
4.What is Pokharel's attitude towards potatoes?
A.Critical. B.Opposed. C.Indifferent. D.Objective.

Today, air conditioners and iced drinks are essential for summer. But how did people in ancient China stay cool without modern technology? They developed a series of remarkable and eco-friendly methods that turned the challenges of summer into an opportunity to showcase their wisdom: 1 .
Jian and Fou: An Ancient “Refrigerator”
As early as the Pre-Qin period (before 221 BCE), the Chinese rich and powerful would collect ice during the winter. They stored it in underground ice containers and used it to cool off during the summer. At the Hubei Provincial Museum, a bronze container called Jian and Fou draws much attention. 2 . In summer, people put ice in the space between the outer container(Jian) and the inner container(Fou) to chill wine; in winter, they would fill the space with hot water to gently warm the wine.
3
Ancient people made full use of materials with natural cooling qualities. Porcelain pillows, bamboo fans, and bamboo mats were known as the “three summer treasures”. In 1982, a lacquered bamboo fan from the Warring States period (475-221 BCE) was unearthed in Hubei. It is the oldest and best-preserved colored bamboo fan ever discovered in China. Moreover, to escape the heat, people often built their homes near mountains or rivers. 4 .
Cool Drinks and Summer Treats
Seasonal fruits and cold drinks were also part of summer life. Dairy products appeared in China as early as the Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE), influenced by neighbouring nomadic cultures. People made refreshing summer drinks like frozen yogurt and milk tea. 5 . Some even say that early Chinese frozen desserts inspired ice cream in Europe.
A.Living with Nature
B.Ancient Cooling Ways
C.It's a smart design that shows ancient cleverness
D.This ancient “refrigerator” could keep things cold
E.They also used dairy products to create cool and delicious desserts
F.The combination of flowing water and natural airflow created cooler indoor spaces
G.They built a comprehensive system for staying comfortable during the hottest months

When I was eight years old, my seven-year-old cousin, Juliana, got sick. My brother and I were watching television in the family room when my mom came in to tell us the bad news. I wasn't really sure what a heart operation meant, but I could tell it wasn't a good thing. Juliana's family was on a tight budget; so was mine. My parents' faces were full of worry and tears, and that was enough to make me cry, too.
When we went to see Juliana in the hospital, she was lying in bed, and she had tubes(管子) and other things hooked to her. It was confusing and scary.
The treatments continued, but Juliana was weaker and weaker. Every time I visited her, it was hard for me to believe her change. She seemed to lose all her strength and her lovely face turned pale. She lost a lot of weight even though she had proper food. As a child, I really couldn't understand what the doctors were doing to her—it seemed like they were making her feel worse not better.
Seeing my cousin in so much pain made me feel like my own heart was aching. Something needed to be done. I knew I wanted to help her get better faster, but at eight years old, I wasn't sure how I could make a difference—I just knew I had to do something to help her.
One night after we visited Juliana, all the way home I couldn't stop thinking about her. A hospital could be a very scary and cold place. I imagined how lonely Juliana must have felt lying there during the night.
When we got home, I sat down at our kitchen table. I always liked drawing pictures, and I started working on it like I had done so many other nights. But this night was different—I was thinking about Juliana. I thought, “Juliana is going to receive rehabilitation training (康复训练) but money is tight. What if I can sell my drawings? Then I can raise money to help her get well faster.”
When I told my parents, they thought it was a wonderful idea, but then my mom came up with an even better one—we could make a cookbook.
Soon, we made enough money to pay for Juliana's rehabilitation training.

be consistent with... 故填with。
prior to表示“在……
trick sb. into doing sth.
根据空后的being washed away和at present可知,此处为现在进行时的被动语态;large quantities of good soil作主语,谓语动词的数应该与quantities保持一致,即谓语动词用复数形式。故填are。
Ⅳ.1.There is evidence that 2.as pure as snow 3.It's up to you to decide

故填to。
该句中“for example, taking three meals a day at the same time each day”为插入语,分析句子主要结构时可以不看,设空处为句子的谓语,主语是consistent eating habits,且此处表示一般事实。故填are。

故填the。

have difficulty in doing sth.

However, new research

them with.
根据第二段中的“such as lowering the risk of Type 2 diabetes, health issues associated with potatoes may actually be due to how people are preparing them and what they're eating them with”可推断,伊迪斯·科文大学的新研究表明,吃土豆引起的健康问题可能与人们吃土豆时采用的烹饪方法和搭配食用的食物有关。
根据第四段中的“When we separated boiled potatoes from mashed potatoes, fries or crisps, boiled potatoes were no longer associated with a higher risk of diabetes: They had a zero effect”可知,他们的研究表明土豆煮着吃对2型糖尿病没有影响。
展示;展现 3.make full use of充分利用 4.unearth v.
2.porcelain n.
4.nomadic adj.
1.G 上文“Today, air conditioners and iced drinks are essential for summer...into an opportunity to showcase their wisdom”总述古人有一系列环保的降温方法,设空处应承接“展示智慧”并引出下文的具体内容。
2.C 上文“At the Hubei Provincial Museum, a bronze container called Jian and Fou draws much attention.”介绍了曾侯乙铜鉴缶,下文“In summer, people put ice...to chill wine; in winter...”
根据下文“Ancient people made full use of materials with natural cooling qualities...people often built their homes near mountains or rivers.” 故选A。
4.F 上文“Moreover, to escape the heat, people often built their homes near mountains or rivers.”
5.E 上文“Dairy products appeared in China...like frozen yogurt and milk tea.” E项“他们还利用乳制品制作清凉美味的甜点”承接上文中的乳制品,且引出下文“Some even say that early Chinese frozen desserts...”,上下文语义连贯。

One possible version:
When I told my parents, they thought it was a wonderful idea, but then my mom came up with an even better one—we could make a cookbook. The very next day, I asked all of our family and friends to send me their favorite food and ways to cook it. To my surprise, everyone jumped at the chance to help. My mom helped to put everything together. My brother typed while I drew the pictures for it. The idea for a small cookbook quickly grew to over one hundred pages. The local skating club paid for the first printing. We sold almost 300 books in our first week. I couldn't believe it.
Soon, we made enough money to pay for Juliana's rehabilitation training. Whenever I went to the hospital, Juliana thanked me with a smile. Not only did she thank me in words, but she also made a great effort, carrying out the instructions of her doctor and keeping doing light exercise every day. Soon she regained her strength and recovered. Our stories were shared among other patients. I was really proud that I had tried to make a difference and I made it!
