1. Read character narratives and extract key details: difficulties, efforts, dreams and achievements. Use model text structures to talk or write about people who never give up.
2. Compare Chinese and foreign role models, learn perseverance is a universal valuable trait, and build a positive attitude to face troubles and pursue dreams.
3. Organize story logic: difficulties → actions → results to strengthen summarizing skills. Argue clearly if the Olympic spirit matters in daily life to develop critical thinking.
4. Join pair and group activities actively; write with reference to sample texts and collect expressions about perseverance independently.
Learning Objectives
What difficulties do they meet during PE training?
They face three difficulties. Long-distance running makes them tired. The long jump is hard for them. Sometimes they hurt their ankles and feel pain.
Why do they keep going and never give up?
They want to pass the PE exam and get good scores. Besides, they learn the spirit of never giving up from Olympic athletes. They believe the saying “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
Free talk
We only meet small hurts at school, but some Olympic athletes get badly injured during games. Why don’t they stop competing?
It is the Olympic spirit — never giving up — that keeps them competing. They train for many years to stand on the Olympic stage, and they don’t want to waste all their hard work just because of injuries. They respect sports and their own dreams.
Who are the people in the pictures? What special trouble do they have?
They are Paralympic athletes. They have physical disabilities, but they still take part in sports games.
What spirit do these Paralympic athletes show us?
They show us the spirit of never giving up.
Look at the two men in the pictures. Can you guess who they are? What do they have in common?
They have a lot in common. First, they both had big Olympic dreams. Second, they both faced great difficulties. Most importantly, they never gave up their dreams and showed the Olympic spirit of perseverance.
Today, we are going to read their stories and explore the true meaning of the Olympic spirit. As an old saying goes, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” Let’s open your books to Unit 3, Integration, and find out more.
The first man is Kieran Behan, an Irish gymnast. The second one is Derek Redmond, a British 400-metre runner.
A
Simon is reading an article about the Olympic spirit. Read it with him and answer the questions below.
The Olympic spirit
When it comes to the Olympic Games, people often think of medals, but the Olympics are about so much more. They are about friendship, fair play and never giving up.
Kieran Behan, an Irish gymnast, dreamt of competing in the Olympics from a young age. When he was just 10 years old, he fell ill and doctors told him that he would never walk again. Kieran faced this with courage. He followed a careful plan and worked step by step to get back to training. He got hurt when he was 12, and doctors said the same thing. But still, he did not give up. Finally, at the age of 23, his dream came true: he made it to the London 2012 Olympics.
The Olympic Games are more than a competition. They celebrate not only amazing performances, but also people’s will to keep going even when the way forward seems impossible.
2 Do you think the Olympic spirit is also required in our lives? Why?
At the age of 10, he was seriously ill and doctors said he could never walk again. When he was 12, he got another bad injury, and doctors gave him the same bad news. However, he kept training without giving up. At 23 years old, he realized his Olympic dream.
Yes, I think we need the Olympic spirit in daily life. The core of the Olympic spirit is never giving up when things are hard. As Grade 9 students, we meet lots of challenges like hard math problems and stressful exams. If we stick to our goals just like Kieran, we can beat difficulties and make progress.
1 What did Kieran Behan experience before he competed in the 2012 Olympics?
Further thinking
1. Do you think the Olympic spirit is only for sports players? Why or why not?
No, I don’t think so. As Grade 9 students, we also need this spirit. We have heavy homework, difficult subjects and bad exam results. If we keep going and never give up, we can make progress just like Kieran.
2. Kieran waited for 13 years to realize his Olympic dream. Is it always worth sticking to a difficult dream? Give your opinion.
Yes, it’s worth it. The process of fighting for our dreams shapes us into stronger people. Even if we fail at last, the courage to keep trying is the most valuable treasure.
