Plants are amazing! In the past, there were some ideas that plants had feelings and could act like people. But now, new studies show that plants are unusual in their own ways.
One way is how plants ▲ themselves. For example, tomato plants can make their leaves taste bad with a special juice when worms (虫) eat them. This can even make the worms die. Corn plants can sense worms and then “call” their enemies (敌人) to hunt the worms.
Plants can also talk to each other. They use special air. There are small openings in plants. These openings let out air with information. When a plant has problems, like being eaten or blown over by the wind, it sends a “call”. Other plants close to it can get this “call” and try to stay safe.
Do plants have memory (记忆)? One example is the “memory of winter”. Apple trees need to “remember” the number of cold days in winter to bloom in spring. Other plants like chrysanthemums can sense the length (长度) of darkness and use this to decide when to flower.
Now, when we look at plants in a park, we can think of them as “someone we don’t know” with their own “stories” going on all around. We don’t know if they feel pain, but they sense touch.
31. Which word is the most suitable for ▲?
A. change B. improve C. protect
32. What does Paragraph 3 talk about?
A. How plants communicate.
B. What plants do when facing danger.
C. Why plants communicate with each other.
33. What makes chrysanthemums remember things according to Paragraph 4?
A. Light. B. Temperature. C. Rainfall.
34. Which is the right structure of the passage?
A. B. C.
35. Who may be the writer of the passage?
A. A farmer. B. A biologist. C. A geography teacher.
【答案】31. C 32. A 33. A 34. B 35. B

Do you know which flower is a special symbol of love for mothers? It’s the carnation! This lovely flower didn’t become a“mother’s flower” by accident—there’s a warm story behind it.
It all started with a woman named Anna Jarvis from Philadelphia, the US. On 9 May, 1906, Anna’s mother died. She was very sad, but she also thought about how hard her mother worked to raise her and her sisters. Then, she had an idea: Why not create a day to let children show love to their mothers? In 1907, on the first anniversary (周年纪念日) of her mother’s death, Anna held an event. All the mothers at the event had carnations from Anna. She wanted to honor (纪念) her mum and thank every mother for their love for their family. She hoped people could wear white carnations on this special day to remember their mothers.
Anna worked hard to make her idea come true. She gave speeches (演讲) and made some posters. She even wrote letters to famous people in the US. Finally, in May 1914, the president (总统) Wilson decided every second Sunday in May would be Mother’s Day.
Later, in May 1934, the US made the first Mother’s Day stamp. It showed a kind mother looking happily at some beautiful carnations. The stamp travelled far, and more people agreed that carnations symbolize love for mothers. Now, people all over the world give carnations to their mothers on Mother’s Day to say “I love you, Mum.”

Pi Xiu (貔貅)
Many people like it. In Chinese culture, Pi Xiu, the ninth son of a dragon, can bring luck to people. It takes money as food without letting it out. Also, people believe Pi Xiu can protect their houses from bad spirits.
Three-legged toad (三足蟾蜍)
This frog-like animal is not like the real ones. They are magical, although they have only three legs. In Chinese myths (神话), three-legged toads spit (吐出) money from their mouth and help the poor. For this reason, it’s welcome in Chinese culture.
Little foot with a spider
Imagine a spider on a little fat foot. In Chinese, spider is zhi zhu and foot is zu. When the two words come together, it sounds like zhi zu in Chinese, meaning“satisfied”. The tea pet reminds people to be happy with their lives and thankful for all the good things.
Now you see, tea isn’t all about drinking. Everything about it may tell you something about Chinese culture.

33. What makes chrysanthemums remember things according to Paragraph 4?
A. Light. B. Temperature. C. Rainfall.
34. Which is the right structure of the passage?
