Choose the ones that are true for you. A. Popular science magazines. B. Science fiction books. C. Online news. Popular science magazines. Science fiction books. Online news. Skim through the text and select the correct answer. 1. What is the type of this text? A. A science-fiction story about travelling to other stars. B. A popular science article about space exploration. C. A news report about the launch of Voyager 1. D. An advertisement for space travel. 2. What is the main idea of the passage? A. To explain why Voyager 1 travels far away into space. B. To show the difficulties and hopes of visiting the stars. C. To describe people's ancient beliefs about stars. D. To compare distances between the Earth and other stars. Read the title and the text quickly. Where would you find an article like this? Reaching for the Stars Since the beginning of human history, people have looked up at the stars and wondered what they were like. Many ancient cultures believed that these points of light were from gods or other mysterious worlds. However, as science and technology developed, we learnt the truth about stars. They are real places like our own sun, and they are farther away than anyone imagined. This raises the question: Can we visit the stars one day? The man-made object which has travelled farthest from Earth is Voyager 1. This spacecraft was launched in 1977. In case Voyager 1 is found by alien life, a special record with sounds and pictures from Earth is carried on board. It shows who we are and where we are from. By 2025, Voyager 1 was over 25 billion kilometres from Earth, but that is still a long way from Earth's second-closest star, Proxima Centauri. That star is 4.2 light years away — about 40 trillion kilometres! Read the title and the text quickly. Where would you find an article like this? The challenge of visiting the stars gets even bigger for space flights with humans. The farthest that any human has travelled in space is only about 400,000 kilometres, to the far side of the moon. Time is a big problem. At present, even a journey to the planet Mars will take around six to nine months. What will the astronauts eat and drink during this period? And how about their health and safety? These problems grow when we talk about visiting another star. It might take hundreds of thousands of years to get there! Scientists, however, believe that visiting the stars is not a completely wild dream. One idea is to have the astronauts sleep during their journey, like some animals do in winter. Another is to develop much faster spacecraft. While this is not possible right now, with nations and scientists cooperating with one another, there is hope that the necessary technology will be developed. Humans have photographed other galaxies, set foot on the moon, and even successfully landed rovers on Mars. It seems likely that one day we will reach the stars. Read the title and the text quickly. Where would you find an article like this? Identifying the text type Before you read, decide what kind of text it is. Is it a sci-fi story, popular science article, news report, or something else? 识别文本类型 在阅读之前,先判断这是一篇什么类型的文本。它是科幻故事、科普文章、新闻报道,还是其他类型? We can find this article in a popular‑science magazine(科普杂志), a school science textbook, or a science website. Read again and match each paragraph with its main idea. A. Long distance space travel is difficult for humans. B. Humans have long been curious about the stars. C. In the future, it may be possible to visit a star. D. No spacecraft has travelled close to a star. Paragraph 1 Paragraph 2 Paragraph 3 Paragraph 4 Analyze the structure of the text. Introduction Challenges Solutions & Conclusion People have long been interested in stars. The writer puts forward a question: Can we visit the stars one day? It takes Voyager 1 as an example. It shows stars are extremely far away from Earth. Human-carried space flights face great challenges. Time, food, astronauts' health and safety are big problems. Supporting facts Scientists offer two possible ideas for long-distance space travel. With international cooperation, humans may reach the stars in the future. Complete the mind map with the information from the text. You can use your own words. Humans looked up at the stars and _________ what they were like. Human Imagination Can we visit the stars one day? Achievement People learnt the _________ about stars as science and technology developed. Voyager 1 was launched in _________. Voyager 1 carried a special _________. wondered truth 1977 record Complete the mind map with the information from the text. You can use your own words. We can _________ much faster spacecraft. six to nine safety sleep Challenge Expectation develop Read the text carefully and select the correct answer. 1. Why did Voyager 1 carry a special record into space? A. To record how fast it travelled in space. B. To show alien life information about humans. C. To store pictures of distant stars and galaxies. D. To send messages back to scientists on Earth. 2. What does the underlined phrase “a completely wild dream” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. a crazy and impossible‑sounding idea. B. a dream full of exciting wild animals. C. a plan that has been finished already. D. a dream that comes from ancient stories. Read the text carefully and select the correct answer. 3. What can we infer from the passage? A. Humans have already travelled to Proxima Centauri. B. It will be easy for astronauts to visit other stars soon. C. Human space travel still faces great difficulties now. D. Scientists have invented much faster spacecraft already. 4. What are the two ideas scientists have come up with for star travel? A. Sending more robots and building new homes on Mars. B. Making astronauts sleep and developing faster spacecraft. C. Working alone and making bigger spaceships. D. Taking more food and finding new planets first. Think and Share. 1. What is one big problem for humans to visit other stars? The huge distance is a big problem. It will take hundreds of thousands of years to get to another star. Besides, astronauts' food, health and safety are also serious problems. 2. Why does the writer think humans may reach the stars one day? Because nations and scientists are cooperating with each other. Humans have already made great achievements in space, such as setting foot on the moon and landing rovers on Mars. We hope new technology will be developed in the future. Discuss the questions. Find more information to support your answers. 1. What did some ancient cultures think about the stars? Why? Some ancient cultures believed that stars were from gods or other mysterious worlds. The reason is that they knew little about science and technology at that time, so they explained the unknown stars with myths and beliefs. 2. What is carried on board by Voyager 1? Why? A special record with sounds and pictures from Earth is carried on board. The reason is that in case Voyager 1 is found by alien life, this record can show who we are and where we are from.
