B Carsickness can make travel a much less enjoyable experience for many people. Could listening to the right music help with their carsickness? Scientists studying ways of reducing (减少) carsickness have found that playing the right types of music may help people feel better more quickly. Scientists used a special simulator (模拟器) to make people feel carsick. Once the participants (参与者) began to feel sick, the scientists played different types of music for different groups of participants to see which one was the most helpful in helping them feel better. At the same time, scientists watched participants brainwaves (脑电波) to see how carsick they were. The results were both clear and surprising. According to the study, happy music was the most helpful against carsickness, reducing it by 57.3%. It was very closely followed by soft music at 56.7%. Exciting music reduced carsickness by 48.3%. Surprisingly, playing sad music was less helpful than doing nothing. The control group reported 43.3% better after they rested, while those who listened to sad music reported only 40% better. These findings offer a better way to help carsickness than traditional treatments. “The traditional treatments often have side-effects such as sleepiness.” said Dr Qizong Yue of Southwest University, China. “Using music to help is an easy, safe, low-cost, and personal method for each person. Based on our results, people experiencing carsickness during travels can listen to cheerful or gentle music to feel better.” While these results are clear, the scientists agree that more research with larger and more samples will be needed to prove these findings. Future studies will try to improve our understanding of how music influences the brain and body during carsickness. 4. How do the scientists carry out the research? A. By studying popular types of music. B. By doing interviews in the bus stations. C. By comparing the results of different groups. D. By playing different music for the same person. 5. According to the passage, which kind of music works best for carsickness? A. Exciting music. B. Soft music. C. Happy music. D. Sad music. 6. What does the underlined word “side-effects” probably mean in the passage? A. Further help. B. Special reasons. C. Main advantages. D. Unwanted results. 7. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. No Carsickness Any More B. Music Helps with Carsickness C. A New Way of Playing Music D. Different Music, Different Feelings C When Maske took up cycling at the age of forty, she had no idea that a new hobby would turn into a lifelong journey with five Guinness World Records (纪录). When she was a student, Maske played high-level hockey and basketball, but after marriage and motherhood, sports were in her past. “Many women in their forties feel like their dreams are gone.” says the mother of two. A surprise victory in a 5-km fun run at her children’s school encouraged Maske. And then a cycling expedition (探险) from Kashmir to Kanyakumari made her take up cycling seriously. She kept improving and training, but being one of the few women in the group came with its own challenges. “Keeping up with men riders was difficult,” she says. “I was slower, but when I caught up with them, whenever they said, ‘Let’s go’, I would say, ‘Let’s go’——even though they had been resting for a while. I saw many women who were slower, took longer breaks, and men riders would be unhappy to have them join the group the next time.” The first time Maske tried to set a world record was to cycle the 6,000-km-long Golden Quadrilateral. Even though she finished the race, her final result wasn’t good enough to qualify (获得资格). She never gave up. The loss only encouraged her to go for successes one after another. Maske set her first Guinness world record in 2022, cycling from Manali to Leh in 55 hours and 7 minutes. Her latest cycling record took her from Bhutan to India through Nepal, a journey of 1,803 km in 10 days, 18 hours and 40 minutes. As for what’s next, Maske has her eyes set on cycling from India to Singapore via Myanmar. People of all ages, write to tell her that she’s their hero. One of her friends who didn’t know how to ride a bicycle also learned to ride and completed her first 100-km ride. Her daughter gave her the nickname the Extreme Lady and started to follow her example. 8. Which of the following is TRUE about Maske? A. She seldom did sports when she was a student. B. She won the cycling race in her children’s school. C. She started a new hobby when she was middle aged. D. She kept her love for basketball after getting married. 9. What did Maske do to keep up with men riders? A. She rode farther. B. She joined women riders. C. She took shorter breaks. D. She asked men riders for help. 10. Which shows the right order of Maske’s rides? ①The ride from India to Singapore via Myanmar. ②The ride from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. ③The ride from Bhutan to India through Nepal. ④The ride from Manali to Leh. A. ①②③④ B. ②④③① C. ①④③② D. ②③④① 11. What might be the writing purpose of the passage? A. To show it’s never too late to start a hobby. B. To show men can do better in cycling. C. To show cycling is a good sport for women. D. To show failure is the mother of success. D Have you ever found it difficult to organize your tasks? I’d like to show you a great model called the Time Quadrants to help you make the best use of your time. It’s made up of two main parts, “important” and “urgent”. Important—Your first things, activities that are important to your task and goal. Urgent—things that have to be done as soon as possible, activities that need immediate attention. In general, we spend our time in four different time quadrants. There are different kinds of activities in each quadrant. What quadrant are you spending most of your time in? In Quadrant 1, things are both urgent and important, like helping someone who is sick. It is part of life, but if you are spending too much time in Q1, you’ll feel like a hot mess. The results of it are stress (压力) and anxiety. Quadrant 2 is made up of things that are important and not urgent, like relaxation, friendships, planning, and doing homework on time. It’s the place you should be in. You take a look at everything you have to do and then put first things first. You have the simple but powerful habit of planning ahead. Living in Q2, you will have control of your life, balance (平衡) everything, and have a high performance. Quadrant 3 represents things that are urgent but not important. Urgent, immediate things feel important, but often not. Q3 is full of activities that are important to other people but not to you. You can’t say no to others. You try hard to please everyone, but end up pleasing no one, including yourself. Q3 is one of the worst quadrants to be in. The result of spending too much time here is feeling like a follower rather than a leader. Activities in Quadrant 4 are neither urgent nor important, like too much TV, too much sleep, too much time online. School is the last thing on your mind. The result of living in Q4 is full of regrets. We all spend some time in each quadrant. The key to success is to learn to give as much time as possible to Q2. 12. Which of the following is an activity in Quadrant 1? A. Looking after your sick sister. B. Making a new friend. C. Talking with your cousin about a book. D. Trying a new kind of drink. 13. Where should we spend the most time among the four quadrants? A. In Quadrant 1. B. In Quadrant 2. C. In Quadrant 3. D. In Quadrant 4. 14. What will happen if you spend too much time in Quadrant 3? A. You will be under great stress. B. You won’t have time to relax. C. You will make your life a mess. D. You won’t know what you really want. 15. What will probably be talked about in the next part? A. What are the Time Quadrants? B. What important tasks should you do? C. How can you spend more time in Quadrant 2? D. What can you do with urgent but not important things? Professor Chen Ning Yang, a world-famous physicist, Nobel Prize winner in Physics, Professor at Tsinghua University, passed away in Beijing on October 18,2025 at the age of 103.
