本讲围绕“The Value of Money”主题,达成三层目标:
Do you think money can change a person?(你认为金钱能改变一个人吗?)
反应一:“Yes, I think so.”
反应二:“I don’t know.”
反应三:把观点重复三遍“I agree, I agree, I agree”——词汇贫乏,一个意思换着法重复。
① 先亮观点 —— 让对方知道你的立场;
② 再给理由 —— 把观点“顶住”;
1. 教师先请一位同学说:“I think money can change a person.”
停顿,多数同学会回答:“Because money is important.”
In my view, the ocean is not just a vast body of water, but the very lungs of our planet.
I say so because it produces over half of the world’s oxygen and regulates our climate.
For example, coral reefs, often called the “rainforests of the sea”, support a quarter of all marine species.
Oliver: Brother, this young man is penniless. He has just come ashore from a shipwreck, hungry and alone.
Roderick: And that, Oliver, is exactly why he is perfect for our little game.
Oliver: You wish to give him the million-pound note for a month, and bet that he can survive without spending it?
Roderick: Not merely survive — I bet that the note itself will make him rich in reputation before he ever spends a penny. People will open doors for him, not because of who he is, but because of what he holds in his pocket.
Oliver: And if he spends it or loses it?
Roderick: Then I lose the bet. But I doubt he will. A man who has known hunger knows the value of what he earns.
A month later, Henry has not spent the note. He has, instead, taken a job washing dishes at the restaurant. The owners treat him like royalty, yet he goes home each night with two pounds in his pocket — his honest wages. He has learned that a free steak tastes less sweet than bread he has paid for himself.
① 从 Roderick 的原话 “People will open doors for him, not because of who he is, but because of what he holds in his pocket” 可以看出 ——
他赌的从来不是亨利——赌的是别人看亨利的方式;
② 因此答案应落在 people’s attitude / how others treat Henry 上。
He believed the note itself wouldn’t change Henry, but it would change how others treated him — people would open doors for him because of the note in his pocket, not because of who he was.
① 表面上看:他有了工作、不再挨饿,这是“变了”;
② 但本质上:他依然选择“洗盘子挣工资”,而不是借名声去借钱 —— 说明他对“诚实劳动”的坚持没有变;
③ 那么变的究竟是什么?是他的心理状态:从“被动等待施舍的幸存者”(hungry and alone),变成“主动创造价值的劳动者”(earned his honest wages);
Henry’s core character didn’t change, but his state of mind did. He remained honest and hard-working, yet he gained the confidence to stand on his own feet — that is the real value the note brought him.
I guess…
(Opinion)
In my view, … / From my perspective, … / I’d argue that … / As far as I’m concerned, …
示范:
In my view, money itself is not good or bad — it simply makes you more of what you already are.
用 “I’d argue that …”
I’d argue that money cannot buy everything, but without it, life becomes much harder.
(Agreeing & Disagreeing)
I couldn’t agree more. / That’s exactly how I see it. / You’ve made a good point.
I see your point, but … / I’m afraid I can’t go along with that. / That may be true, yet …
示范:
You’ve made a good point, but I’d add that wealth also brings worries a poor man never has.
A:“I think money can buy happiness.”
同学B(失败示范):“I see your point, but I disagree.”
I see your point — you mean money can provide comfort and security, which are key to happiness. However, I’d argue that lasting happiness often comes from experiences and relationships, which money can facilitate but not guarantee.
I couldn’t agree more — money can buy the comfort and freedom that bring happiness.
I see your point, but I think happiness depends more on relationships and health than on money.
(Speculating)
I bet … / It’s likely that … / Given that …, I guess … / He probably … because …
示范:
Given that Henry has known hunger, I guess he will value honest work more than the note.
用 “Given that …”
Given that he has never spent a penny, I guess he would feel ashamed if he ever used it for luxury.
(Evaluating)
What strikes me most is … / It’s ironic that … / What impresses me is … / I find it … that …
示范:
What strikes me most is how quickly the waiter’s respect changed the moment he saw the note.
What strikes me most
用 “It’s ironic that …”
It’s ironic that a note he cannot even spend makes him the most respected man in London.
The note changed how people saw Henry, but did it change Henry himself?
If you were Henry, would you spend the note or keep it as Roderick planned?
What does “the value of money” mean to you?
In my view, …
I say so because … / Given that …, …
For example, when Henry …, we can see …
In my view, the note did change Henry. I say so because he went from being a helpless beggar to a confident worker. For example, before getting the note, he was described as “hungry and alone”, but afterwards, he chose to work and earn his own living.
In my view, the note did not change Henry’s core character. I say so because he consistently valued honesty over easy gain. For example, even though he could have gotten free meals, he still washed dishes for an honest wage.
In my view, the note changed how people saw Henry, but it didn’t change Henry himself. I say so because he kept the note unspent and went to wash dishes for an honest wage. For example, when the restaurant owner bowed to him and offered free meals, Henry still paid like an ordinary man. What strikes me most is that he valued dignity more than the note — that’s the same Henry who arrived hungry a month ago.
这段示范三层清晰 —— In my view 亮观点,I say so because 给理由,For example 与 What strikes me most 举例证并升华。
In my view, …
A. 推测
C
I couldn’t agree more.
B. 评价
D
Given that …, I guess …
C. 亮观点
A
What strikes me most is …
D. 同意
B
I couldn’t agree more 是最高程度的同意;Given that … I guess 有前提、有推测;What strikes me most 是亮出最在意的一点,即评价。
In my view / I see your point, but / It’s likely that / What impresses me is
① “______, Henry was the bravest character in the play, because he refused easy money for honest work.”
② “______ the two brothers will be surprised when Henry returns the note tomorrow.”
③ “You say money made the owner polite, and ______ it only showed how shallow he already was.”
______ that Henry, holding a million-pound note, never once tried to spend it, even with the owner offering him free meals.
① In my view ② It’s likely that ③ I see your point, but ④ What impresses me is
In my view;② “will be surprised” 是对未来的推测,用 It’s likely that;③前句“你说钱让老板礼貌”,后句“它只暴露了他的浅薄”是转折,用 I see your point, but;④ “never once tried to spend” 是令说话人赞叹的事实,用 What impresses me is。
In my view, success should never be measured by money. I say so because money only shows what a person owns, while true success lies in what a person contributes. For example, Henry in the play owned a million-pound note, yet he won real respect only when he chose to work honestly for a living. What strikes me most is that the restaurant owner, though polite to the rich, lost his dignity by bowing to a piece of paper. That is why I believe money is only a mirror, not a measure of success.
点评:
范文三层完整 —— In my view 亮观点,I say so because 给理由,For example 与 What strikes me most 举剧中两处细节并升华。
1. 一段发言的骨架:亮观点(In my view …)→ 给理由(I say so because …)→ 举例证(For example …)。
A. I couldn’t agree more.
B. In my view, happiness comes more from people than from things.
C. I see your point, but isn’t it true that money solves most practical problems?
D. It’s likely that the poor value small joys more.
E. What impresses me most is that the richest people are not always the happiest.
F. Given that money brings comfort, I guess most people would choose to be rich.
Tom: Do you think money brings happiness?
Lily: ______ 1 ______ We spend so much of our lives earning it, after all.
Sam: ______ 2 ______ Many families with plenty of money still argue every day.
Tom: Then what does bring happiness?
Lily: ______ 3 ______ Good friends, a warm family, a job you love — money can’t replace those.
Sam: ______ 4 ______ You need money for rent, food and health care. But after that, the rest is up to you.
1. A 2. E 3. B 4. C
解析:
A(I couldn’t agree more,最高程度同意)。
E(What impresses me most 亮出一个反例)。
I see your point, but 再转折,选 C。
In my view, wealth is a test of one’s true character. I say so because the same million-pound note brought out two completely different sides of human nature. For example, the restaurant owner suddenly became polite and treated Henry like royalty the moment he saw the note, yet he had ignored Henry when he was poor and hungry. What impresses me most is that Henry, instead of enjoying free meals, chose to wash dishes for an honest wage. It’s ironic that money can make a shallow man bow low, while a man of real character simply stands taller.

Unit 5 The Value of Money
Do you think money can change a person?
反应一:“Yes, I think so.”
反应二:“I don’t know.”
反应三:把观点重复三遍“I agree, I agree, I agree” —— 词汇贫乏,一个意思换着法重复。
① 先亮观点 —— 让对方知道你的立场;
② 再给理由 —— 把观点“顶住”;
① 先说一句观点:“I think money can change a person.” ② 被追问 “Why?” ③ 常见的回答是:“Because money is important.”

Oliver: And if he spends it or loses it?
Roderick: Then I lose the bet. But I doubt he will. A man who has known hunger knows the value of what he earns.

The owners treat him like royalty, yet he goes home each night with two pounds in his pocket — his honest wages. He has learned that a free steak tastes less sweet than bread he has paid for himself.
引导路径:① 从原话 “People will open doors for him, not because of who he is, but because of what he holds in his pocket” 看——他赌的从来不是亨利,赌的是别人看亨利的方式;② 因此答案应落在 people’s attitude / how others treat Henry 上。

I guess…

(Opinion)
In my view, … / From my perspective, … / I’d argue that … / As far as I’m concerned, …
示范:In my view, money itself is not good or bad — it simply makes you more of what you already are.
【即时训练1】用 “I’d argue that …”

(Agreeing & Disagreeing)
I couldn’t agree more. / That’s exactly how I see it. / You’ve made a good point.
I see your point, but … / I’m afraid I can’t go along with that. / That may be true, yet …
错误路径演示:别人说 “I think money can buy happiness.” 你回 “I see your point, but I disagree.”——前半句敷衍,后半句生硬否定,毫无诚意。
I see your point — you mean money can provide comfort and security, which are key to happiness. However, I’d argue that lasting happiness often comes from experiences and relationships, which money can facilitate but not guarantee.

(Speculating)
I bet … / It’s likely that … / Given that …, I guess … / He probably … because …
示范:Given that Henry has known hunger, I guess he will value honest work more than the note.
【即时训练3】用 “Given that …”

(Evaluating)
What strikes me most is … / It’s ironic that … / What impresses me is … / I find it … that …
示范:What strikes me most is how quickly the waiter’s respect changed the moment he saw the note.
What strikes me most
【即时训练4】用 “It’s ironic that …”

The note changed how people saw Henry, but did it change Henry himself?(这张钞票改变了别人看亨利的方式,但改变亨利自己了吗?)
If you were Henry, would you spend the note or keep it as Roderick planned?(如果你是亨利,你会花这张钞票,还是像罗德里克计划的那样留着?)
What does “the value of money” mean to you?(对你来说,“金钱的价值”意味着什么?)

In my view, …
I couldn’t agree more.
Given that …, I guess …
What strikes me most is …
In my view / I see your point, but / It’s likely that / What impresses me is
① “______, Henry was the bravest character in the play, because he refused easy money for honest work.”
② “______ the two brothers will be surprised when Henry returns the note tomorrow.”
③ “You say money made the owner polite, and ______ it only showed how shallow he already was.”
④ ______ that Henry, holding a million-pound note, never once tried to spend it, even with the owner offering him free meals.
