The vacation is a wonderful time for us to relax and enjoy life. Instead of being busy with schoolwork, we can make use of this period to do what we like. For me, doing small magic experiments or tricks (戏法) is one of them. Today I am going to show you one of the tricks below.
Pepper (胡椒粉)! Go away!
What you need: A glass of water. Pepper, Dishwashing soap (洗洁精).
What to do:
To do this trick, get ready early. Rub (涂) a little dishwashing soap on your finger. You only need a small amount. Don’t let anyone see.
Get a glass of water and some pepper. Be careful not to put your soapy finger into the water!
Put some pepper onto the water and it stays on the top of the water.
Let your parent put a finger in the water and see if he or she can make the pepper go away. Of course, it shouldn’t go anywhere. Pepper will even stick to your parent’s finger.
Now try it with your soapy finger. Be dramatic! Say the magic words,“Pepper, I order you to stay away from my finger!” And it will!
What’s going on?
On top of the water, water molecules (分子) form a thin layer. Pepper can sit on it. But dishwashing soap gets in between the water molecules and breaks up the layer. The soap pushes the pepper away, so the pepper seems to run away from the finger.
6. What should you put on your finger before the trick?
A. Water. B. Pepper. C. Dishwashing soap. D. Hand soap.
7. What will happen when your parent puts his or her finger into the water?
A. The pepper may get together. B. The pepper may stay underwater.
C. The pepper may stay on his or her finger. D. The pepper may disappear in the water.
8. The writer gives the last part of the text to ________.
A. advise us to eat less pepper B. show us the importance of soap
C. tell us what water molecules are D. explain how the trick works
9. Who might be interested in the text?
A. Celia, who likes magic tricks. B. Tom, who sells pepper for a living.
C. Dan, who likes doing the housework. D. Annie, who often washes hands with soap.
10. Which picture shows what will happen?
A. B. C. D.

①People who’ve seen Earth from space say that it can change your whole idea about life. And according to a new study, it may also change your brain.
②The study found that spending time in space can cause the brain to shift (移动) “upwards and backwards within the skull (颅骨)”.
③Researchers took brain scans(扫描) of 26 astronauts before and after their time in space. These astronauts had spent anywhere from two weeks to six months in space, with a few of them spending as long as a year on the International Space Station.
④The researchers divided the brain into 130 parts and then studied each one. The results showed changes in the position of the brain within the skull. The longer the astronauts spent in space, the clearer the changes were, especially in structures at the top of the brain.
⑤The researchers also took scans of 24 non‑astronauts who spent up to 60 days lying in bed. To create conditions (环境) similar to what astronauts’ bodies experience in space, the participants (参与者) were placed in a tilted (倾斜的) position so their heads were six degrees below their feet.
⑥The results showed similar changes in the non‑astronauts’ brain, but the upwards shift was still greater in the astronauts’ brains. The researchers said that most of the participants’ brains went back to normal within six months. But some didn’t.
⑦The study did not find any symptoms (症状) such as headaches, related to these brain movements. Still, the scientists said that research like this is important, especially for future long‑term space tasks.
⑧“We need to understand these changes and their effects to keep astronauts healthy, and it also provides the scientific support for ordinary people’s space travel someday.” Seidler, a co‑author of the study, said.
16. What do the first two paragraphs mainly tell us?
A. The skull keeps the brain safe. B. Space flight pushes the brain up and back.
C. Looking at Earth from space hurts the brain. D. Seeing Earth from space changes ideas about life
17. What do the 130 brain parts tell the researchers?
A. Only top brain structures are affected. B. Short trips cause no brain changes at all.
C. Each brain part moves in a different way. D. Longer tasks produce stronger brain shifts.
18. Why did the scientists study non‑astronauts in a tilted bed position?
A. To find out what exactly caused the brain to shift.
B. To look for the differences between bed rest and space travel.
C. To find a better way to make astronauts sleep better in space.
D. To test new kinds of medicine.
19. What will the scientists probably do next?
A. Study how these changes affect brains. B. Send more astronauts on short space journeys.
C. Teach astronauts to focus on the brain shifts. D. Stop some research because no symptoms were found.
20. What is the structure of the whole passage?
A. Opinion→examples→problems B. Topic→research & findings→importance of the research
C. Reasons→ problems → solutions (解决) D. Facts→ different ideas → personal story
【答案】16. B 17. D 18. A 19. A 20. B

Travel is more than taking photos and buying gifts. When we leave our daily lives behind, we open the door to a bigger world. ____21____ In this passage, I will explain why middle‑school students should be encouraged to travel.
First of all, travel trains our life skills. On a trip we must read maps, ask strangers for help and plan the money we have. ____22____ These problems may be hard, but they teach us to think quickly and make wise decisions. The earlier we practice these skills, the more independent we will become.
Second, travel helps us understand different cultures. A classmate of mine once laughed at a visitor who ate with his hands. But after he had a tour to India, he saw that eating by hand is a traditional and popular way to show respect for food. ____23____ Travel teaches us that “different” does not mean “wrong”.
Third, travel makes textbook knowledge alive. A geography lesson on mountains becomes real when you stand on the tops at sunrise. ____24____ When knowledge comes with sights, sounds and feelings, it is kept in mind longer and deeper.
Some parents worry that they spend too much money traveling. In fact, a one‑day visit to a nearby town or even a planned walk through an old street is also travel. ____25____ What matters is not the distance (距离), but open eyes and mind.
In short, travel is a hidden class that improves our skills, widens our minds and strengthens our knowledge. Let’s pack our curiosity and start the journey‑near or far‑this weekend!
A. It doesn’t have to be expensive or far.
B. We can even learn knowledge we can’t get from textbooks.
C. And some cold numbers in the textbook jump into life.
D. The history you learned turns into colorful stories.

B. We can even learn knowledge we can’t get from textbooks.
