一阅读理解
The official language in Uganda is English. But the English spoken here is different from British or American English. Ugandan English, also known as Uglish, has a strong, local flavour.
To make life easier for foreigners, linguist Bernard Sabiiti made a small dictionary. It is a helpful guide for those interested in understanding Uglish.
“The politicians are very successful people in this country, whose entire vocabulary is almost ‘Uglish’. So I thought I should do something to let the outside world know why we speak the way we do,” said Mr. Sabiiti.
There are over 60 ethnic (种族的) groups in Uganda speaking over 40 languages. Every group takes up the English language and makes it their own. And they end up with a very unique variety of English.
So what are some of the strange things Ugandans say?
When a Ugandan says “You are lost”. It doesnt mean “You are in a wrong place”. It means “Long time no see”. And the word “please” is used in strange situations where a foreigner would not be expecting it. For example, they can say, “Thank you, please.”
Bernard Sabiiti says Ugandas public education system does not do enough to teach students how to read and write in Standard English. “Actually this is a class matter. The middle classes send their kids to private, expensive schools. Their children end up being able to speak far more Standard English than those who are going through the public schools which are poorly funded, where text books are not enough. Whats worse, the reading culture is very poor in this country,” he said.
Mr. Sabiiti does not think “Uglish” will ever replace more widely accepted forms of English. But he does think “Uglish” is gaining a few more expressions every year.
1.Why did Bernard Sabiiti make a dictionary of Uglish?
A.To prevent Uglish from dying out.
B.To attract more tourists to Uganda.
C.To collect all the expressions in Uglish.
D.To help foreigners understand Uglish better.
2.Which of the following makes no contribution to Uglish?
A.The reading culture is very poor in Uganda.
B.Every ethnic group uses English in their own way.
C.Standard English is not taught in Ugandan schools.
D.Successful politicians cannot use Standard English.
3.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Uglish is developing rapidly.
B.Uglish is being enriched over time.
C.Some forms of English are on the way out.
D.Standard English will be replaced by Uglish.
4.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Foreigners Impressions of Ugandan English
B.Ugandan English, a Unique Variety of English
C.Ugandan Linguist Bernard Sabiiti and his Dictionary
D.Differences Between Ugandan English and Standard English
